In Helldivers 2, the players team up in squads of four and fight to defend Humanity, Democracy, and Super Earth, using a variety of weapons and Stratagems. The game proved to be a massive success, with millions of copies sold worldwide, right from the get-go. It retained the feel of the first game but switched from an isometric view to a more modern third-person view, where every squad member can move in any direction they like. And, of course, everything has been updated with the latest technology Arrowhead Studios had access to. But, when was the game officially released? Helldivers 2: When did it Come Out?

Helldivers 2 officially released on February 8, 2024, nine years after the first Helldivers game. It is available only on PC and PlayStation consoles, due to Sony being the publisher for the game. For now, it is not playable on Xbox, and that has sparked quite a lot of controversies. But, unfortunately, the release of Helldivers 2 to Xbox does not seem to be anywhere in the future. 

The game is only a couple of months old, at the time of writing, and has already climbed the top of the charts, making it one of Sony’s top sellers of all time. It is available in the standard edition, on a premium Super Citizen Edition.

When Did Arrowhead Start Developing Helldivers 2?

Helldivers 2 began development in 2016, soon after the release of the first game. According to the official statement from Johan Pilestedt, it took “7 years, 11 months, and 26 days” to fully develop and launch.

Did Helldivers 2 Have Beta Testing?

No, there was no public or closed Beta testing for Helldivers 2. All the testing was done internally, in the studio. 

Unfortunately, that meant that the game had quite a number of bugs from day one. Add the fact that no one was prepared for the sheer amount of players right from the start, which caused quite a lot of problems. On the other hand, Arrowhead are doing the best they can to fix every error that emerges. 

Will we see Helldivers 3?

Nine years have passed between the releases of Helldivers 1 and Helldivers 2. The current game had a flying start, but that was brought low by a series of unpopular events, like the lackluster new Warbonds, various weapons nerfs, and the whole PSN controversy. 

Time will tell if Arrowhead will manage to keep the game going. It is still early to speculate whether there will be a need for a third installment in the future, or will Helldivers 2 be the last in the series.
