Helldivers 2 has a lot of different enemies that try to eat you, dissolve you, shoot you, burn you, or just simply crush you. Each alien faction has its selection of heavies, a general term in Helldivers 2 for the largest, toughest, heavy-armored troop types, that almost certainly require some special weapons to deal with. Over time, certain weapons performed better than expected and got nerfed, while others that weren’t working as intended received buffs and fixes to keep them viable. So, let’s see what weapons stand out from the crowd, and what are the best for dealing with heavies in Helldivers 2.
Best Weapons Against Heavy Enemies in Helldivers 2
For these lists, we have selected the most reliable weapons for dealing with heavy enemies of all shapes and sizes. So, make sure that at least one (preferably two) member of your squad has one of these weapons. For the record, the enemies we’re talking about here are Terminid Chargers and Bile Titans, Automaton Hulks, Tanks, and Factory Striders.
Best Support Weapons Versus Heavies in Helldivers 2 – Top 3
1. Spear
The Spear launches homing missiles that only need to lock onto the target and deal arguably the most damage (barring Orbitals and Airstrikes) in the game. They can reliably shoot at targets far away, and even the somewhat longer reload time is not that much of an issue at those distances. Don’t forget that the Spear has a backpack, so a teammate can help you reload faster.
The Spear had a lot of problems with inconsistent locking-on, but after a lot of updates that has been fixed. It reliably locks on to its targets now and that is why the Spear is at the top of the list.
2. Expendable Anti-Tank
EAT-17 is a weird choice for the second place, especially since it is a one-use weapon. What’s the deal with it? The greatest strength of the Expendable Anti-Tank is its versatility. When upgraded with appropriate Ship Modules, you can call in a new pair of EAT’s about every minute.
Next, due to it being a one-shot weapon, you can safely carry some other Support Weapon, switch to EAT, shoot, and switch back to your original Support Weapon, when the target has been dealt with. Lastly, since you get a pair of EATs every minute or so, they are a great team weapon, ie, everyone can pick them up and shoot. Strategically calling in EATs all over the map, “just in case”, is a very viable tactic.
3. Quasar Cannon
The Quasar Cannon was arguably the best Support Weapon out there, with unlimited ammo, a decent rate of fire, and high damage. Unfortunately, it was one of those weapons that performed too well and was hit with a nerf-bat.
Quasar is still a great choice, especially since it does not use any ammo, it just has to cool off. Unfortunately, that cooling-off time has been increased enough to knock Quasar from the top. On the other hand, some sneaky players swap two Quasars, to shoot with one while the other cools off. The Quasar is an awesome anti-tank weapon, even after the nerf, it’s just not a no-brainer choice anymore.
Primary Weapons
Primary Weapons are not the best choice for dealing with heavies, but some proved that they can actually deal some decent damage, albeit only when hitting their fleshy parts/exhausts (weak points). Those are the weapons that either have the Explosive (for the fleshy parts) or Medium Armor Penetration (for the exhausts) Trait, preferably both.
Primary Weapons are not something that can reliably deal with the heaviest of opponents but are great for adding some extra damage, in case the target is “just one hit away from dying”
Eruptor
Eruptor was a go-to choice for many Helldivers, but, just like the Quasar, it was hit with a nerf-bat pretty hard. Before that, the Eruptor/Quasar meta was running rampant. But, it was nerfed to the ground, and then recently brought back up, but not to its previous potential. It lost some of its AoE effect but remained a powerful direct damage weapon. The Eruptor deals a lot of damage per shot, and it has both Explosive and Medium Armor Penetration Traits. The only downside is the slow rate of fire and limited magazine, so every missed shot will be felt.
Purifier
The Purifier is an energy weapon that also combines both Explosive and Medium Armor Penetration Traits. It is a nice mid-range weapon, with an average Fire Rate (worse than the Liberator, but way better than the Eruptor) and higher-than-average damage. But it is the combination of the weapon Traits that makes it a good choice for finishing off wounded heavies or just providing some supporting fire.
Grenades
Impact
Regular Grenades are not the best choice when fighting heavily armored enemies, as they will usually simply bounce off before exploding, with the blast usually hitting the protected parts. Impact Grenades have no such issues, as they explode right on contact. Grenades cannot penetrate heavy armor but are great for damaging weak spots.
Stun
There is nothing worse than when you are targeting Hulk’s back exhaust and it turns back toward you, just before you fire. The Stun Grenade does not deal damage but can slow enemies down, allowing your teammates to more easily target those weak spots. Heavies are more resistant to these stuns than their smaller comrades, but are still slowed down when hit with a Stun Grenade.
Of course, the best choice for anything is always based on personal preference, and some other weapon not listed here may be your go-to choice for heavies. The weapons listed here are generally good in everyone’s hands and will rarely be a bad choice for a mission.
