Are you struggling with these lumbering behemoths? Read on to see the best ways to kill Chargers in Helldivers 2.

Helldivers 2 is a squad-based shooter. You and up to three friends can team up to defend Humanity and Freedom from alien threats. These aliens come in the form of Automatons or bug-like Terminids. Terminids come in all shapes and sizes, but the ones who are bugging us today are Chargers. They can be difficult to take down unless you know a couple of tricks, so let’s see all the best ways to kill Chargers in Helldivers 2.

How to Find Chargers in Helldivers 2

Chargers are Terminids, and naturally, they can only be found on the Terminid-infested planets. Those planets are on the right-hand (eastern) side of the Galactic War table. You have to play on at least Medium difficulty to be able to find any Chargers. You can encounter them regularly during play, they can appear during a Bug Breach, and some mission Objectives revolve around finding and killing Chargers.

What Are Chargers?

Chargers are large Terminids, with strong front armor plates. The official description is “A rushing Charger is nearly impossible to stop, thanks to its meter-thick exoskeleton. Therefore, the recommended response protocol to this situation is the prompt execution of Rapid Lateral Movement (RLM).”

The trick with Chargers is that while they have strong frontal armor, they are vulnerable to attacks from the sides and behind, where their weak spot is located.

Best Ways to Kill Chargers in Helldivers 2

The main feature of a Charger is its strong frontal armor and a weak soft spot on its backside. Our fellow patriots have been fighting these Chargers and have offered the following tips and tricks.

Armor Penetrating Weapons

If you want to take the Chargers head-on, you have to deal with their armor. The best way of doing so is to remove the armor plating from one of their front legs. That way they become vulnerable to small arms fire. So, equip some armor-piercing weapons, like the Recoilless Rifle or an Expendable Anti-Tank (EAT-17), and shoot it at one of the Charger’s front legs. A shot or two should suffice. The leg will turn to a green/yellow color once its armor is removed. Now you are free to shoot the exposed leg with anything you have until the monster falls. Note that this leg wound does not have damage resistance like its underbelly, so you can use whatever weapons you have.

On the other hand, we have seen that a single well-placed shot from an EAT-17 or Quasar Cannon to the head can eliminate a Charger in one shot.

Weak Spots

The Charger does not have any armor on its belly, backside, and on the joints connecting its legs to its body. It can sometimes prop itself up on its back legs, right before its charge, exposing its belly. But, the exposed belly and backside have resistance to regular bullets and should be shot with explosive weapons. We have found that Autocannons are extremely effective against the Chargers. While the shots will usually ricochet off the Charger’s armor, it can easily place shots between the armor plates, dealing significant damage. Autocannon sentry seems to have more luck with this, and we have found that it is incredibly effective against Chargers. Furthermore, lighting the weak spots on fire with incendiary attacks will deal some long-term damage to it. Useful if you cannot place a good shot for whatever reason.

The more dexterous way of dealing with a Charger is to goad it into slamming into a wall. Position yourself in front of a wall, cliff, or anything similarly unbreakable. Once the monster charges at you, duck out of the way, and it will slam into the wall, which will leave it stunned and exposed for a short while. Use this to go around it and you will see its exposed orange underbelly, which is its weak point. Unload everything you got into it and repeat until the Charger is no more. Note that Chargers are more nimble than you would expect from such a large beast, and can make sharp turns without much trouble.

Stratagems

HELLDIVERS 2 – Pre-Purchase – Super Citizen Edition – PC [Online Game Code]
  • BECOME A LEGEND – You will be assembled into squads of up to four Helldivers and assigned strategic missions. Watch each other’s back – friendly fire is an unfortunate certainty of war, but victory without teamwork is impossible.
  • LOADOUTS – Rain down freedom from above, sneak through enemy territory, or grit your teeth and charge head-first into the jaws of combat. How you deliver liberty is your choice; you’ll have access to a wide array of explosive firepower, life-saving armour and battle-changing stratagems… the jewel in every Helldiver’s arsenal.
  • REQUISITION – Super Earth recognises your hard work with valuable Requisition. Use it to access different rewards that benefit you, your squad, your destroyer ship and our overall war effort.
  • THREATS – Everything on every planet wants you dead. That’s what we’re dealing with. Each enemy has distinct and unpredictable characteristics, tactics, and behaviour – but they all fight ferociously and without fear or morality.

The third way is utilizing anti-tank airstrike Stratagems or turrets. Just bear in mind that the Charger is constantly moving, so take that into account when calling down an air strike. Of the more reliable airstrikes is the Eagle 110MM Rocket Pods, since it targets the largest enemy. With some luck, a single use of these rockets will tear its back armor completely, allowing you to shoot it with everything else. Orbital Laser and an Orbital Railcannon Strike can both make short work of a Charger.

Since it is technically a Stratagem, using Reinforce and dropping a Hellpod (remember that the Helldiver inside can steer the pod while it is falling) on a Charger can kill it in one go. You can also do so with any other Stratagem that drops a pod (there is even an Achievement if you manage to kill a Charger with a Resupply pod).

Also note that if you destroy the Charger’s backside, it will start to “bleed”. That means it is just a matter of seconds before it falls, but be careful as it is still dangerous until that happens.

Charger Behemoths

From June 13, Charger Behemoths have been officially added as a separate enemy type. They function the same as Chargers but have more health. Behemoths have white “skulls” on their head, to easily differentiate them from the regular ones.
