What Does Silent Hill’s Art Director Think Of Silent Hill HD Collection?

Silent Hill art director, Masahiro Ito, isn’t impressed with Konami’s release of Silent Hill HD Collection. Upon being shown the screenshot comparison below by a follower on Twitter, Ito replied: “Left side is HD, isn’t it? It’s poor…”

I agree with Masahiro Ito, seriously WTF???? The HD collection looks worse than the PS2 version, even though it has a higher res. They really balls'd this one up :(

I'll wait till it drops in price and the game is fixed

rob60214415d ago (Edited 4415d ago )

I'm going to actually disagree, I went along with the hype about it looking worse for awhile. Now I actually have the game, the framerate is more jerky (why they didn't lock it to 30fps is beyond me it actually goes up to 60 at times) and the fog isn't quite the same - to be honest it's a little off putting. However I went ahead and booted up my old PS2 version on both my ps3 and ps2, even with it's faults the HD version looks a lot better than the old ones. I think it needed more work for sure - but it's not worse than the ps2 version from a visual standpoint. I think people wear their nostalgic glasses a little heavy when it comes to games with fond memories.

Another thing I noticed (in SH2) is the 2d control (3d is tank controls) actually works correctly in the new version, in the old you only had 8 directions- so it feels more like a modern game in that sense.

It kind of sucks a lot of people that get this will be looking for the flaws instead of enjoying how good the game is itself. It's what I ended up doing.

floetry1014415d ago (Edited 4415d ago )

I literally can't find anything about the developer that ported this, 'Hijinx Studios'. They don't have a twitter, a customer care line or even a website. I have to berate them through Konami's people. I mean, who are they really getting to do the port job? It disappoints me greatly that it will go down as one of the sloppiest HD jobs in this generation.

The Silent Hill series is one of my absolute favourites and to have a classic title moved into the current generation of consoles, there is an expectation that the performance is better, the sound is better and the overall in-game is presentation better. Except, it's none of those things.

Son_Lee4415d ago

I think it looks better in HD. Seems like I'm alone in that.

FinaLXiii4415d ago (Edited 4415d ago )

Never played SH2 but i know Silent Hill is a very foggy place not covered by a thin mist.

without that fog silent hill is not that scary cause you see your foes from the distance.

Pozzle4415d ago

It's not necessarily the graphics that look bad. It's the lack of fog. The 'fog world' is supposed to leave your character completely blind, so that they can't see anything (monsters, buildings, the road they're following, etc) more than a couple of inches in front of them. It's meant to give you the sense of being completely lost and isolated.

So if the fog has been removed in the HD version...well...that kinda defeats the point of there being a 'fog world' to begin with.

dvfaa4415d ago

I agree with you. but ONLY because your picture thing is LIGHTS

Son_Lee4415d ago

Everyone agrees with Lights. It's the law.

Ingram4415d ago (Edited 4415d ago )

It's sickening to see how companies nowadays prefer funding a strong marketing damage control lobby than a proper port of a classic game.Reviews with 9's and 10's on metacritic are obviously coming from PR representatives, not the slightest doubt about it.

The games are broken, a VERY sloppy job badly done, this is outrageous, period.
Konami should cope with it and give away as a compensation the original PS2 versions AT THE VERY LEAST-.

You should vote with your wallet buying other things, or they'll keep on poking in our nostalgia with a pointy, dirty stick.

wiggles4415d ago

Just from those screen shots, I can't really see why it would be worth it for me to pick up the HD collection. Does the rest of this game really look this bad? The only difference I see is there is no fog, and maybe the textures look a little bit crisper. I wasn't hoping for a miracle, but I really can't tell the difference between the two.

Does anyone who bought the collection say otherwise?

I mostly disagree with Downpour's position. Yeah, the game is not amazing by any stretch of the imagination but is much better than the HD Collection and Homecoming. The main issue is the performance, but that was mitigated by the patches, especially on the PS3. Personally, I put it a little behind Origins and The Room.

Having Restless Dreams as a different entry from Silent Hill 2 is also a choice.

bfrye26184d ago

Normally, we would not consider it a different game (Restless Dreams), but since it had a very different critical reception and had new content, it was allowed. As for Downpour, I would agree, but since that one is subjective, we let him make his case for the placement.

gold_drake183d ago

silent hill 2 is definitely the best one out of those.

for me personally, the whole ritual/cult stuff was always so weird to me in all the other games.

CrimsonWing69183d ago

No disrespect but I put SH2 over 1. 1 is fantastic, but 2 took it all up a level.

bfrye26182d ago

We agree, that is why the writer put it in top place!

100% agree! SH2 is undoubtedly a stone cold classic.

gold_drake346d ago

i played a couple of months ago for the first time.

i agree that its a great survival game, but i think the minute u realise you can "kill" them, its takes alot of the initial fear out of it.
the same thing happened to me in Siren Blood Curse.

but its definitely one of the best games, when you start looking into the lore and the symbolism

1nsomniac346d ago

Never played it. I had moved on from PlayStation since then. So looking forward to the remake. Hope it’s not too cheesy tho.

P_Bomb345d ago

Pyramid Head or Red Pyramid. Which do you guys call him?

Pickledpepper345d ago

I've just brought the silent hill collection for the ps2 and absolutely loving it

Knushwood Butt345d ago

Nice.

I have the games, just no PS2.

Pickledpepper345d ago

I have a ps2 for sale and a n64 lol

Silent Hill 2 Remake: World Exclusive Deep Dive Interview

IGN has an exclusive interview with the original developers of Silent Hill 2 who have returned to work on the remake developed by Bloober Team.

Nyxus466d ago

Ito: “Personally, I'm very satisfied with the quality of the town and the atmosphere of the Silent Hill 2 they're making. I really get the feeling that they respect the original while still making sure to arrange things in their own way. In particular, we had strong demands about the motif of fog when first starting on this remake, and they were sure to depict it just as we wanted. I believe from the bottom of my heart that they’re making something incredible.”

CantThinkOfAUsername466d ago (Edited 466d ago )

Sure, sure, Ito-san (huh, what does he know!?). Now let the real experts of hardcore Silent Hill fans tell you what's wrong with the remake and why the original is still much better.

What fog is. What it represents. How it ties to the story. How it's part of the lore. Is it natural? A mere creation of the town? Perhaps it's the creator's way of passing comment on world events clouding the masses' judgement as it clouded James'? How the original used just the perfect amount of water droplets, the right temperature and the absolute humidity percentage to create such a marvel piece of visual effect. How the remake ruined The Fog, the atmosphere, and in the process destroyed the entirety of the game.

A legend among legends shall come to congregate fans' hearts and souls—stray, scattered—to put into words the thoughts ceaselessly trembling their minds. His holy sword of enlightenment shall banish the darkness in the form of a YouTube video.

IanTH466d ago (Edited 466d ago )

Honestly, I'm only a modest SH fan and there are definitely some things that concern me trying to bring a game like this to the modern era - though none so esoteric as those posed by your strawman lol.

Oddly, the first thing I'm curious to see how they handle is the script and voice acting. It is one of those scenarios where the original was written in a time where you wouldn't necessarily have high-quality writers on staff. But, more so than that, during a time where options for quality translations were harder to come by. Not only having to survive the quality of the translator, but the skill of their own authorship & balancing the script for the game & its new audience.

And they didn't really have the same voice direction & such they do these days, so you could get some really odd voice performances. This game somehow worked with all the pieces it had, and I think something might feel off if they try to punch up the script. I can't imagine they try to recapture the same tone of voice acting, that would be a tall order. And one I'm not sure they should even try lol.

Creating an environment is one thing, and in this case is a very big piece of the puzzle. But it isn't the only piece. I'm still hopeful it'll turn out great, but it has some unique challenges it needs to overcome IMO.

S2Killinit466d ago (Edited 466d ago )

PS5 exclusives huh? This confirms another exclusive for PS5.

Im looking forward to this. The original left a lasting impression to the point that I still remember the feeling.

thesoftware730466d ago

We already knew that from the day it was announced right?

SullysCigar466d ago (Edited 466d ago )

I guess this removes all doubt.

2moda5gamer466d ago

I may be mistaken but I remember hearing this had some direct funding from Sony.

Babadook7466d ago

Yah. But that was a leak.

thesoftware730466d ago

Calisto Protocol, Dead Space: Remake, Re4: Remake, and Silent Hill: Remake.

Horror games are back in a big way! I'm loving it.

cthulhucultist466d ago

And Alan Wake 2 & Amnesia The Bunker as well!!

CBaoth465d ago

and didn't they announce a new Alone in the Dark?

IanTH466d ago (Edited 466d ago )

It is a little weird how most of them are just new versions of old games, though. Hopefully this gives publishers the confidence to green light more proper new horror IPs.

Flawlessmic466d ago

Coming 2023, book it!!

Can't wait to play this again as an adult!

Knushwood Butt466d ago

Looking forward to this, but I'd also likd3 to play through the original SH2 again.
