It's tough to sell Bayonetta on the premise that it's something it's not. Consumers saw through that - it's not some T&A fest, and if you want that, there's the internet. It's a hardcore and extremely Japanese action title with enough old in-jokes to qualify for Mystery Science Theater 3000 status on its tax records. It's also a beautiful game, but they weren't selling that in the ads. That's why I love the game, but that's also why I understand when it doesn't sell well in the States...
First-month sales may be important to MAG, but I'm not so sure that it's headed for the graveyard yet. Just taking a look at that game lets me know that this isn't something made for the mainstream - it's something that's made to get a loyal fanbase.
Microtransactions may play a huge role in its sustainability, for better or worse. Big fans that play as part of a loyal squad will probably dole out the cash for new stuff.
What happened to games being made for the PSP? That resurgence for the PSPgo is dead now. If they think that Go's will sell for a drop to only $200, they're either fooling themselves or have a zillion games up their sleeve that we don't know about. Let's hope it's the latter, or that the drop's really to at least $150.
I really wish they released more of the PSone classics in NA(come on, Japan has had Einhander for years!) instead of releasing bad PSone games and labeling th...
You're throwing around some strong banning suggestions for someone who comments on articles they don't read. This was a well-made and well-researched article about five great games.
It's probably not your fault. Maybe you clicked on the wrong article, or maybe you didn't click on the Open Zone by accident.
@sikbeta
I like where you're going with this, but not every FPS lacks originality in all elements. The original Half-Life really gave developers a springboard for what we're seeing in current FPS game mechanics, along with providing great ideas on how to drive a good story along in a shooter, and COD4's atomic bomb scene proved that even shooters can create dramatic scenes while staying in first-person perspective... unlike the Doom movie.
Can you give us links to similar articles to back up the "ripping off websites" part of that comment? It would be interesting to read these, and I'm sure they're out there somewhere. You're talking like you've got them in your back pocket, so fire away!
I like your comment. Kamiya says thank-you in an even better way, just blatantly throwing the game references in Bayonetta as homage.
Honestly, I think there are some shoutouts in there that couldn't be completely spelled out since they weren't property of Capcom/Clover/Sega. Some of that music is eerily close to tracks on Final Fantasy X and X-2, and I think they wanted it that way. No way to tell, though, since it would be a lawsuit if there was a way to tell.
I think saying "Not a single original idea in them" is pushing it. All of these games are great, and simply taking those old ideas and blending them together involves being creative.
Heck, UC2 had a great idea - Let's make some architecture instead of just designing video game arenas! Not everyone's going to notice or even like that idea, but it's a good one.
You could say the same about one of the sparkling examples of originality they mentioned in the b...
Danielle, you bring the awesome to these comments. I'm winding up to say something, and then I see your comment below, saying exactly what I was about to say. My work here is done, and it's not my doing once again!
As for N4's second comment, I have no clue what you are doing. That's not a bad thing, but I'm just confused. If you want to reply to Thread 1, you're able to do so. Otherwise we're just sitting here looking at an individual post thinking "Wait, why is he try...
Socomnick: "Insert random UC2 hate here." The article lauds Uncharted 2 for doing all of this well, not being a "crappy rip-off." What, did you analyze the icon or something? Literacy is important.
Hay: "Bayonetta comes from Hideki Kamiya who made Viewtiful Joe and DMC, Witch Time and presentation are HIS ideas." Yes, they said exactly that at the bottom of the page, but thanks for saying it again, I guess.

The big games on Xbox360 are military-related. Sure, the COD series is obviously wartime stuff, but even Halo and Gears of War have their Western military-tinged weapons, speech, and even ideals.
...so why doesn't Microsoft want the Xbox360 to be associated with weapons? Is it because things will suddenly change with Natal? I have no clue. It really doesn't make sense, especially since not every soldier is at war, and many of them would be interested in buying a console if th...
I remember the Polygamia article also. The problem with the vertical placement of the old PS3's was that the heat was rising from the bottom to critical parts of the system.
There's all kinds of advice that people give, and it's all different based on what type of tech they're using to figure this out. I'd follow your instruction manual first, and then maybe find good, cited evidence about this - not just a list with some anecdata like this one.
However, let's not...
I'm looking for a Project Eden announcement from Mizuguchi. It'll be for either one of the motion controllers or all of them. It's pretty much known as the Rez sequel, but Sega owns the title rights.
What, you didn't like Bayonetta due to the lack of a strong troll presence in the enemy lineup, or the fact that you can't spell the title?
Seriously, go play through a good game for once and get back to us.
Anything to say about DI at all? I say it's... well, it's boring. Plays like a prototype DMC that didn't pass QA.
LeShin, you are quickly "reviewing" a demo. Go play the actual game. Seriously, for your own sake - it's awesome no matter what console you've got, especially now that Sony came to (extremely dumb) Sega with help- the loading problem is gone. It's not perfect, but it's still a killer game.
Yes, it has some camp (and if you think the GOW series does not, you're not looking hard enough), but that's just part of the tone. You'll catch a plethora of references to old ...
The reason why people aren't playing through Bayonetta is that Sega screwed up the PS3 port. Sony fixed the loading times, so I got it on discount, and yes, now I'm singing its praises.
I don't care which console you own and how much you love it or hate the other - Bayonetta is an amazing game, and anyone skipping it due to bitterness is missing the heck out. It's good on either console, and the versions are identical where it counts - the gameplay mechanics.
And y...
To both 1 and 2, they're definitely good, some of the best titles in the WiiWare store, but it's an acquired taste.
The graphics are all in a very well-done 4-bit throwback style, but what's happening on screen isn't actually a 4-bit game, as there are plenty of special effects, a lot of stuff going on simultaneously, and the music is definitely beyond that of an old Atari. So far, all of these have been rhythm-based games.
Beat has you playing Pong with a zillion p...
Yeah, I was really surprised to not see Demon's Souls on this list, especially considering the score it got through IGN.
Really nothing else to say.
@Pawned - "Just listen to [a] podcast [from a] few years ago, it was worse back then."
It's good that you noticed that. IGN's editorial organizational structure has changed since then, so there's why. People were part of a console's team as part of their job description with hardly any crossover, so you did have people defending their system quite a bit - their job was linked to it.
Now they don't, which makes things a bit different. For example, people ...
What are you doing on this site? You should be playing your games instead of posting on a forum! Go! Quickly! It's apparently your moral obligation!
Sales may not be directly related to gaming on the surface, but they're a predictor of what big businesses will fund next, therefore being a predictor on the future of gaming.
Think about it - if the Wii didn't sell well, would this year be centered around motion controls? What kind of an experience would Modern War...
