Think Nintendo is behind the times with online.....think again !

This article goes in depth about how Nintendo has been trying to impliment online in all its home consoles dating back to the original Famicom (NES). Nintendo actually tried its best years ago to start its own online network but hit many barricades along the way. So today's gamers see Nintendo as being behind the times when it comes to online, but in reality they were way ahead of everyone!

LX-General-Kaos4470d ago

Nintendo is always ahead.. even when they dont look to be or given credit for.

PSVITAlitysensor4470d ago (Edited 4470d ago )

Hiroshi Yamauchi, Gunpei Yokoi, Shigeru Miyamoto, Koji Kondo, Satoshi Tajiri...

Great minds work (have worked) at Nintendo.

BrutallyBlunt4470d ago (Edited 4470d ago )

What a waste of writing. They can elaborate the entire history of Nintendo if they want to but it's meaningless if it was never put into action. Yes Nintendo is telling everyone they are going to be more serious when it comes to online but i will believe it when i see it.

Nintendo cares about Nintendo and will continue to support their products as THEY see fit, NOT what the actual consumers want. Nintendo will also not invest like Microsoft, Valve and even Sony have.

@LevelHead

Motion control is a norm now because of Nintendo. Nintendo always gives us what we think is cool, even if we don't really know we want it.

saladthieves4470d ago

@PopCocks359

I wouldn't call it a norm, more like a short term trend. The casual market usually goes with what's popular today, and that causes a shift in the trend. They've discovered that their iPads can play simple games costing a mere fraction of what Nintendo's Wii was offering - the end result is they can take the fun with them wherever they go, and get more anytime, anywhere.

@LevelHead

I agree. People buy Nintendo products to pretty much play Nintendo games. In my opinion, Nintendo relies a bit too much on their 1st party games. I'm not saying that it's a bad thing, but it means that there could be a limited variety of content, which would explain why 3rd party support tends to be lacking. Simply put, Nintendo games sell best on Nintendo products.

ChickeyCantor4470d ago (Edited 4470d ago )

"I agree. People buy Nintendo products to pretty much play Nintendo games"

That is only valid because of quirks Nintendo had.

Back with the NES/SNES the library was flooded with tons of games and everyone loved it.
With n64 there was only a handful of great games. Developers flooded to the PSx
GameCube fell in the mindset of being "kiddy".
Wii was "underpowered" and couldn't support most multiplat games.

It's not that people don't want to buy other games on a Nintendo console other than Nintendo games. It's the fact that people always have something to complain about.

The biggest problem is Third party support.

For the sake of the argument, if Nintendo did have the exact same features as the PS3 and 360. Why would I not buy other games beside the Nintendo franchises?

The need for a different console beside the wii was simply because some games weren't offered on it. In a different case I wouldn't see why I would buy a 360 or PS3...other than for the exclusives.

So with that in mind...I only got a PS3/360 for the exclusives. How is that different than one getting a Nintendo for the exclusives?

sikbeta4469d ago

@PopRocks359

Motion-controls are not "a norm" if that was the case, Wii-U would come with an upgraded wii-mote or something like that instead of releasing with a new tablet-controller

O-T

Whatever, need to see it first...

Nintendo was always high tech with their technology I don't know why they get that rep for being cost effective and low tech for their condoles.
Besides the wii, all their consoles were very powerful.

Nes, snes, n64 and gamecube were all pretty powerful.
I know people will point their fingers at the Ds, 3ds but those are handhelds and Nintendo thinks that handhelds are their own experience and doesn't need to compete with consoles in term of graphics.

But they sure need to upgrade their online network tho.

yabhero4470d ago

The 3DS isn;t as powerful as the vita but its till a pretty big jump from the DS and PSP... just look at Resi on the 3DS.

dedicatedtogamers4469d ago

No, this is untrue.

The NES was 8-bit architecture coming out during a time when 16 bit and above was the norm. Nintendo's execs (not sure if it was Gunpei Yokoi or maybe Miyamoto) SPECIFICALLY said that they wanted to use off-the-shelf, older hardware in the NES so that it could be inexpensive to buy.

The SNES was one of the LAST 16 bit systems to come out, and while the technology was great, it was already overshadowed by PCs and some consoles. Heck, the SEGA CD (let's set aside the failure of the hardware itself) came out only 1 year after the SNES launched.

N64 was definitely more powerful in many respects, specifically 3D. But it couldn't render 2D as well (partially why Saturn and NeoGeo had all the arcade games) and it had one major flaw: cartridges! The memory for those things was tiny compared to what was available on the CDs for the Saturn and Playstation.

Gamecube? Uhhhh, no. The dang thing couldn't even run a CD. Yes, the graphics were more advanced than the PS2, but it was hardly a "high tech" system.

Arguably, the ONLY "high tech" console Nintendo is doing is the WiiU. Nintendo has pretty much NEVER been on top of the dog pile when it comes to graphics/physics/technology.

hkgamer4469d ago

Depends what you mean by high tech with their technology. Nintendo systems have been releasing their consoles later in the generation than anyone else to keep the costs lower. Nintendo has hardly ever released their console first, with the Wii and Wii U, I guess it shows Nintendo are trying a different route now and no one knows if they will be successful or not.

Nintendo is still behind with online. I don't care what innovative ideas they tried in the past. It just didn't work because technology and peoples lifestyles just wasn't there in the past.

I wouldn't be calling it great if it didn't work out at that time. It's like me saying I would release a machine as powerful as what they have for flight simulators and it will cost a lot. Would that make me innovative or just stupid in the business world?

BlmThug4470d ago

Yaay, Nintendo gave us motion controls /s

Yaay, rats gave us diseases /s

TacoTaru4469d ago

Yaay, and they were copied by...? Sony!!!

Jihaad_cpt4469d ago

LX they were not always ahead with their online experience

LX-General-Kaos4469d ago

Yea thats where we shift credit over to microsoft. Those are the people that paved the way for online console gaming in its finest form.

Biggest4469d ago

Paved the way would imply they started something. Dreamcast paved the way. Microsoft laid the asphalt.

d0nni34469d ago

Nintendo are generally ahead with somethings yea but their problem is they never seem pull anything off to it's full potential. They innovate but never perfect their ideas.

eferreira4469d ago

look at the wii and 3ds online structure. They aren't ahead. I hope the wii-u does better.

Shok4470d ago

The SNES had online. Not that many people know that. Nintendo had a network going and everything.

mike1up4470d ago

Let me guess, only available in Japan?

Jirachi4470d ago

Good point so did 64 if i recall correctly. Both ideas flopped and that's why nintendo was reluctant to try online with gcn.
online gaming really wasn't popular until after gcn came out and at that point it was too late to add it.

banjadude4470d ago

Did not know that! Hmm, that's pretty neat.
Do you know any games that had online support for it?

Jirachi4470d ago

Yeah there was a few zelda games that had used this(japan only) if you want to know more look up "broadcast satellaview" or "bs zelda"

maniacmayhem4470d ago

Sega had it to, in fact they went one step further and had Sega TV that had OnLive features. It failed too, the world wasn't ready for that back then.

AWBrawler4470d ago

NintEGA (Nintendo and SEGA) paved the way for modern gaming but so many supposed hardcore gamers hate them both now. Oh the hypocrisy.

Biggest4469d ago

How is that hypocrisy? They were the cream of the crop in the 90's. They are no longer the cream of the crop. That is just how it is. This article is supposed to be about online services. There is nothing but bad to talk about in the case of Nintendo (and SEGA) and their online services.

Megaman_nerd4469d ago

that's the point of the article. They say that Nintendo is not behind the time because the Snes supported online.

Has anybody even taken the time to read the article? XD

sonic9894469d ago

At aw brawler well I love sega and Sony very much but I hate Nintendo ( for my reasons ) I don't hate Microsoft cause I respect them as a company
Not that I hate miyamoto or something I just hate there visions and hardware and the fat plumber that's all
And I own a PS3 and a vita ( Japan imported ) so have your say

Mini Mario4468d ago

"I love sega and Sony very much but I hate Nintendo"

Hate is such a harsh word.

Why hate a company that has done so much for gaming. If you wanna "hate" something, hate the way sega has treated their hedgehog the last decade

At least nintendo keeps mario fresh without completely changing it too mch

Mini Mario4468d ago (Edited 4468d ago )

double post - woops

In your eyes: Nintendo will always be behind the times.

Your mind is already set on disliking the company as a whole (Nintendo), so it's best for everyone (including yourself) that you refrain from posting on Nintendo related articles.

LX-General-Kaos4470d ago

just ignore the haters and prepare yourself for the wii u as im doing.

Lord_Sloth4470d ago

Implementing a fully functional online into your console 6 years after everybody else has doesn't count as being ahead of the curb.

suicidalblues4470d ago

@ sloth

I think you were going for "ahead of the curve".

user39039994470d ago

They had it all this time??
Than why do they suck at it?

Dannycr4470d ago

The fact that Nintendo has had any sort of Online feature on previous consoles doesn't mean nothing, specially when the online for the 1 console that actually required a good online (Wii) didn't have a robust or even decent online (except for a handful of games like Mario Kart Wii).

Nintendo did fall behind in the online department in this generation, that was obvious, specially comparing it to what XBLA and PSN offers. Hopefully they will revamp the online on the Wii U.

As of today, I have never been able to play a single Super Smash Bros. Brawl online fight, and that was one of the reasons I bought the wii and the game.

PopRocks3594470d ago

Smash Bros.' online 'sorta' works. It's extremely laggy.

If you want decent online Wii games, try Mario Kart Wii, Mario Strikers Charged and Monster Hunter 3.

Dannycr4468d ago

It doesn't work for me... at all, and yeah, as I said, Mario Kart Wii IS perfect in the online department, but playing another game doesn't compensate the inability to play the game that I wanted to play the most.

That's not a solution, not even a workaround, it's just ignoring the problem. I also have a 3DS and so far, I have notice a BIG improvement over the Wii. It now resembles something closer to what XBLA and PSN offer and that is good, but I hope that it keeps growing and that the Wii U will have something on-par with those 2 services.

PopRocks3594467d ago

Agreed. Though I would blame Sakurai as oppose to Nintendo. Brawl was primarily his vision, just as Metroid Other M was Sakamoto's.

If Nintendo Network is any indication, the Wii U will be better. Whether it matches/passes its competition remains to be seen, but we know for sure that it will be better than what Nintendo has on the Wii.

And goddamn it, give me my New Super Mario Bros. and Kirby co-op game with online play.

How Many More Victims, Like Garry's Mod, Will Nintendo's Hurtful Crusade Create?

Hanzala from eXputer: "As Nintendo takes out 20 years' worth of stuff from Garry's Mod, I watch in shock, thinking why it continues to hurt and discourage its fans."

RiseNShine5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

The irony that some of the most disgusting business practices come from companies like Disney or Nintendo, i can't even begin to understand what terrible damage was Garrys Mod making to Nintendo bottom line, imho they're getting pretty nervous about where they're heading in the future, handhelds are no longer something exclusive to Nintendo, from Steam Deck to many others, now you can play the latest games and pay a fraction of the price on Steam sales, so it's up to their exclusives, which just on their own would make hard to justify purchasing a closed overpriced hardware with outrageous price policies (Super Mario Odyssey is still 60 euro 6 years later!), and as a home console they're always underperforming compared to Sony or Xbox.

gold_drake5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

i cam guarantee you, that their exclusives alone is what drives switch sales. they sell in the 10s of millions of copies.

nintendo created their franchises to be sort of nostalgia driven, exclusive only on nintendo.

people will always buy the pkmn games as they always bring in new younger fans amd is family friendly

mario kart, the same thing, mario games in general.

zelda games are system sellers. animal crossing for the casual gamers.

nintendo doesnt need third vame devs essentially. they made sure with the switch and the limitations that they looked more to pc ps and xbox.

its sad, but nintendo is more than fine with what they're doing. they positioned themselves to appeal to the more casual gamers.

but to your point, im not sure why they're doing this rly.

Inverno5d ago

Look at how they handled Nintendo games being streamed or uploaded on YouTube in the past. They killed Yuzu and Citra even when they had nothing to do with ToTK being leaked, not to mention it was basically unplayable on emulation the week it was leaked. Smash Bros tournament, that was fairly recent. They shut down their online services without any care for purchases made. I bought a switch after skipping their last 2 consoles and handhelds but I don't plan on buying anything Nintendo in the future. They take things to the extremes, they legitimately hate their fans. They're honestly right up there with the likes of Acti, EA, and Ubi, only difference is that they disguise themselves as being family friendly all the while being shady.

Nintendo's Massacre Of The 3DS And Wii U Is Finally Complete, Regrettably

Hanzala from eXputer: "The cruel hammer of Nintendo has fallen. Farewell, 3DS and Wii U, you surely brightened my life and many others; you won't be forgotten."
