Player and Pawns set out on a trail in Dragon's Dogma 2

Wanting to know how to save your progress? This article explains how to save the game in Dragon’s Dogma 2.

Dragon’s Dogma is the latest aRPG from Capcom. You get to make your character in great detail, and the world itself is huge, filled to the brim with content. But, the system for saving the game is not very forgiving. Let’s touch on that subject. Read on to see how to save the game in Dragon’s Dogma 2.

Dragon’s Dogma 2: How to Save the Game

DD2 has a peculiar save system. You only have a single save file, and it is constantly overwritten, either with manual saves or autosaves. If you see a glowing red ring in the top-right corner of your screen, that means that the game is autosaving, and it will overwrite the last save that you made. You cannot “save scum” and load the save file that suits you. Moreover, starting a completely new game is also convoluted.

But, no everything is that bleak. There are actually two methods to save your progress, and knowing how they work is crucial. You can either manually save your progress, or you can rest at an Inn.

Manual Save

As you would expect, you can manually save your progress. To do so, pause the game and navigate to the “System” tab. There, you will be presented with three options.

  • Save and Continue
  • Save and Return to Title Screen
  • Return to Title Screen Without Saving

They are pretty self-explanatory, “Save and Continue” will save your progress at that moment and you can continue the game, “Save and Return to Title Screen” does the same but it returns you to the game’s main menu. And lastly, the “Return to Title Screen Without Saving” just quits your game and returns you to the main menu. The last option is great when you have made some mistakes and do not want to save your progress.

Inn Rest

Inn Rests are a cool, “backup” mechanic. Each time you rest at an Inn or in your own private residence, the game will make an “Inn Rest save”. That save file is separate from the regular manual/autosave one. Inn Rests are great for backtracking your progress if you have made a series of bad choices, failed quests, etc. Inn Rest saves are only overwritten by other Inn Rest saves.

In short, you have two save files in Dragon’s Dogma 2: one that is constantly overwritten by autosaves and manual saves, and another that behaves separately and only takes into account Inn Rests.
