Diablo 4 Season 1 Battle Pass and Season Journey, Explained

Diablo 4 Season 1 Power

Are you wondering how the Battle Pass and Season Journey will work in Season 1 of Diablo IV?  This article will explain everything that you need to know.

With an influx of new players to the genre, the Season 1 of Diablo 4 is shaping up to be an interesting one. Season of the Malignant, as the first season is titled, will mark the beginning of seasonal play in Diablo 4. With it, comes the Battle Pass and the Season Journey, so let’s see what that’s all about.

What is a Battle Pass in Diablo 4?

The Battle Pass system in Diablo 4 works the same way as in many other games. There is a track that you can fill by doing in-game and seasonal activities. The track is divided into tiers, with rewards tied to each. Some of them are free, while others only unlock through paid Battle Pass. With that in mind, there are three types of Battle Pass access in Diablo 4:

  • Free Battle Pass: features 27 reward tiers.
  • Premium Battle Pass: paid version, with extra 63 reward tiers on top of the free tiers.
  • Accelerated Battle Pass: premium paid version, with the same tiers as Premium, plus 20 tier skips and an extra emote.

You can progress through the Battle Pass on any model, and even if you’re on Free, you can later buy the Battle Pass and retroactively earn all the rewards from previous tiers.

You will notice that there is a new resource found only on the Battle Pass, called Smoldering Ashes. These are only available on free tiers, which means all three Battle Pass models will be able to earn them.

How to Unlock Battle Pass Reward Tiers

To unlock reward tiers in Diablo 4 Battle Pass, you will have to earn Favor. Favor is earned through the Season Journey, which is a separate track from the Battle Pass, though the two interact. Each tier is unlocked when a certain amount of Favor has been earned.

Even if you play on the Free Battle Pass, you will earn progression through locked tiers towards the next Free reward. If you later decide to buy the Battle Pass, those rewards will be earned retroactively, as we outlined above.

What is the Season Journey in Diablo 4?

Season Journey represents your character’s progression through a season. It is tied to the season’s story and theme, with Objectives and Chapters that players can complete to earn Favor. Chapters are made up of Objectives, and completing a certain number of Objectives is necessary to complete a Chapter. Since not everyone likes all activities in Diablo, there are more Objectives available than is required, so you can pick and choose which ones to complete.

Completing an Objective rewards you with Smaller Favor, while Chapters reward you with Greater Favor. As implied, the difference is in the amount of Favor you earn from each. In addition to that, some rewards during Season Journey come in the form of items and Legendary Aspect unlocks, so there’s a good way to progress your character too.

Is the Season Journey a Paid Feature?

No, Season Journey is available for all players and your Battle Pass status has no effect on it. All characters created for the season start on the Season Journey. Also, your alt characters will be at the same journey progression as your main, making the feature account-wide, rather than character-specific.
