The 25 Most Diabolical Video Game She-Villains

Complex: Sirens. Succubae. Witches. Grenades. Mankind has created multiple templates of raw femininity, primarily to have a medium on which to project their awe and fear of vaginas. True to classic form, the modern game villainesses with whom we grew up have run the full gamut from mother figure to pure malevolence.

It’s not always about motivation. Sometimes evil is evil, especially when it comes to entertainment. But even game designers have come to realize that few people—regardless of gender—were born as pure, gale forces of fuckery. Look, we’ll never be rid of cardboard cut-outs of scantily clad women doing bad things; that would be a futile attempt to override human nature. What’s encouraging, though, is that games—so often castigated for simplistic representations of race, violence, and sexuality—have occasionally presented us with villainesses as empathetic as any other character, fictional or real. So it's time for a roll call to honor 25 of the most memorable game she...

Ultimecia was a bitch to take down the first time you played the game. It's nice to see some FF8 love for once.

I know they've denied it but I still think that Rinoa could be Ultimecia, I think the only reason Sqaure have denied it now, even though theres a load of refrences in the game, is because people would think that the game dosen't really end up on a happy ending since Rinoa will end up becoming evil.

I think they should make a sequel set around this, it would be nice to see them go off on a mission to change the future so Rinoa dosen't become Ultimecia, we could see a world which, after what happened to Edea, the galbadian army try to kill anyone who is a sorceress including Rinoa. I think it would make more sense if changing the future for Rinoa isn't the main priority but something else is like a war between Galbadia and Esther. The paradox thing can just be worked round the multiverse theory.

Pozzle4685d ago

I personally don't agree that Rinoa is Ultimecia (I prefer to think of her as a persecuted sorceress who gained enough power to destroy the world -and the human race- in every timeline), but I do think she doesn't get enough love. The main reason I hear people say they don't like her is because "she randomly pops up in the end with no backstory", but I never understood that complaint because she was the main villain since disc one. Sure, she was pulling the strings through Edea...but it was still Ultimecia. She was a genuinely good villain imo...and had a pretty awesome final boss battle. Dare I say, one of the best final boss battles in the entire Final Fantasy series.

I liked Seifer too. He was horribly under-used towards the end of the game. His rivalry with Squall could have been a great plot if it had been expanded upon. (It would have been awesome if he had been sent through the Time Compression too, to become Ultimecia's "knight" in the future.)

MrSpace4685d ago (Edited 4685d ago )

I like to think she was because the theory someone came up with online was so good I just wanted it to be true. Plus it would of meant a story for Square to have in a sequel.

The theory said something along the lines of Rinoa lives longer then her friends since she's a sourceress, her friends die and even her knight...Sqaull. As Squall dies she takes his ring and creates the strongest GF Griever (due to grief) because of GF's power making people forget memories overtime she forgets everything (even her name), but Rinoa still has that feeling of loosing someone which gives her the motivation to compress time....etc. It's much longer the theory but you get the point.

Yeah I think she was the hardest boss, that is if you don't know how to use the junction system to your full advantage and don't have the ultimite weapons. Seifer should of been the warm up boss before Ultimecia but it's just a one on one match.

I think the game deserves a sequel and even a prequel set in the sourcess war with Laguna (which leads up to him becoming president of Esther).

It's funny mostly everything about FF8 is under appreicheated because people make up complaints like the one you mentioned about Ultimecia. Theres the complaint about the junction being "too hard" yet everything says they knew how to get 9999 helth etc, Squall being an emo when Cloud was a bigger emo then him plus Squall had the best character development in the entire FF series (Lonley, selfish jerk to a brave heroic leader) and then people moaning about the draw system in battle even though it wasn't the only way to draw, I never drew hardly in FF8 and I had a load of magic from draw points.

^This. THIS!
Stop remaking PS4 games!
Remake PS1 and PS2 games à la FF7R, RE1, Mafia, Half Life style ....
Make Legend of Dragoon, Legacy of Kain etc Remakes happen

darthv7230d ago

Legend of Dragoon... WTH is Sony doing just letting this one squander?

-Foxtrot30d ago

I wonder if their mindset is like “meh we have Final Fantasy what’s the point of our own JRPG”

FinalFantasyFanatic30d ago

@-Foxtrot,
Square-Enix had a long period there where it seems they didn't know what to do with Final Fantasy, I think that time period would have been a good time to revisit their classics and remake them. Now it seems they're going full steam ahead with the franchise, so they have less reason to revisit those older games. I wouldn't mind if they subcontracted them out to other developers, that and I don't trust SE to remake their older games.

Cacabunga30d ago

Simply because i do not think it will succeed.. maybe a bad example but e we got Medievil remake after many years fans have beg asking... result is It flopped hard. Remaking a JRPG is so risky. Only a bunch of hardcore gamers who played the original would buy it. If Sony put even more budget into it then it’s even more risky.

As i suggested before, i think they should start remaking like square did with Star Ocean. Or something similar to Octopath Traveller. Build up some hype and try on higher scale later on..

Terry_B30d ago

Let me tell you about PS1 games that should get a remake actually.

Jumping Flash (As a VR game)
Ridge Racer 1-4 as Ridge Racers 3..just like the pretty perfect PSP RR1.-2 games but with even more content
Xenogears
Cardinal Sin which was full of nice ideas for its time but was plagued by technical limitations
Bushido Blade ^^ just like CS
Bust A Groove.
WWF Attitude. With the same roster, same voices,Only slightly updated gameplay but current gen graphics
Dynasty Warriors..yes the fighting game that was similar to Tekken 2 while it had weapons. As nice as the DW games are..its a shame they never released a new fighting game

And while I am at it.

Thrill Kill ...hell yes.

KyRo30d ago

Ah Thrill Kill, the game that was banned/cancelled but everyone had played 😂 what a throwback!

darthv7230d ago

jumping Flash would make a great VR game. Im actually quite surprised nobody has thought to do that one... even on the indie side for something like the meta quest.

GhostMirror30d ago

Big yes to Jumping Flash! and Ridge Racer revivals. Bushido Blade was cool as well; it was pretty deep and so much different from other fighting games at the time. Einhander was another good non-RPG from Square, which was kind of rare for them in that era.

Didn’t Thrill Kill eventually get re-skinned and released with a Wu-Tang Clan license? 😂

FinalFantasyFanatic30d ago

I miss Ridge Racer so much, give me a new game or at least a collection of the older games! I had a blast playing Ridge Racer PSP on my PS4 a few months back.

I cannot understand the current business practice of remaking games from the previous generation, especially when they are very much playable today and still hold up well, it's even worse when people are willing buying them again. The PS1 generation is so ripe for remakes, I know more than a few people who would clamour for a Xenogears remake, or almost any game from that list.

Ravenkiss30d ago

and Valkyrie Profile Lenneth. They did Star Ocean 1 & 2 R already, VPL should get the same treatment.

Redgrave30d ago

I assume this to mean that you aren't considering the PSP port to be the remake in this statement? Like a remake of that one?

FinalFantasyFanatic30d ago

That version is quite old though, that was 18 years ago, so doing a remake in the vain of Star Ocean might be worth it (I did not think the PSP was that old until I looked it up).

Knightofelemia30d ago

I'd be down for FF8, and Xenogears. But I would also be down for Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. And I wish Namco would get off their ass and remake or remaster the Xenosaga trilogy.

FinalFantasyFanatic30d ago

There's been talk of a Xenosaga trilogy on the proviso that there was enough demand, I hope that actually happens one day.

Why does From Software not do ANYTHING with this franchise... It's so sad... Can't they at least outsource it to someone to try a revival?

There are some good nominees in this list that are deserving to be inducted also, but I feel Metroid has had the most impact on the industry out of all of these. Look how Metroid influenced the evolution of the Castlevania games, and the "Metroidvania" subgenre of games have become a prevailing force in gaming today. Especially now, Metroidvanias are bigger than ever.

I can very much see Resident Evil being added later too, bc it really did popularize and define the survival horror genre. I would say that one is next in line.

ApocalypseShadow50d ago (Edited 50d ago )

Agreed. When I got my NES back then, I of course had Super Mario Bros. But I also got Double Dribble, Mike Tyson's Punch Out, Rad Racer, Zelda and Metroid. Loved playing all of them over and over. But Metroid was so deep and the music was so other worldly, that that game has stuck with me to this day decades later.

Sure other awesome games came along like Contra, Castlevania, Mega Man, etc. But Metroid really hit that sci-fi fix. And the twist of finding out who was in the suit was one of those great moments in gaming history talking with other friends in the neighborhood that had the console that rushed to the end to find out for themselves.

Definitely deserves hall of fame like many other picks. Should have been inducted a long time ago.

Miraak82 49d ago

If any Metroid game should get the honor it should be Super Metroid , it's perfection in my eyes . 30 years later and I still feel it's the most epic shit ever .

OtterX49d ago

Yea, I agree that Super Metroid REALLY raised the bar on atmosphere and exploration, still in my Top 10 or 20 games of all time. The original Metroid did set a good framework, but Super Metroid perfected it in its first sequel. Since it's the only one up for vote, I'd still vote for the original Metroid bc it did establish a very good concept of gaming in a more primitive gaming era. But, you're absolutely right.

Chocoburger49d ago (Edited 49d ago )

The GBA remake deserves it or Super Metroid, the original was a very sloppy and rushed game programmed in 3 months and it shows.

If you've never played the remake, it's absolutely a must play, fixes basically every flaw in the game. Check out ExoParadigmGamer's comparison video.
