Will Super Mario 2 and Metroid entice hardcore gamers back to the Wii?

Greg Howsen of guardian.co.uk writes: Like most gamers over 30 I've got a nostalgic bond with Mario and Metroid. Actually, given the high quality of the 2002's Metroid Prime and 2007's Super Mario Galaxy, admiration for the pair is not just limited to the old timers. But with most traditional gamers better catered for on the 360 and PS3 will the release of new Mario and Metroid titles tempt them back to the Wii?

the games are gonna sell anyways

StanLee5174d ago

I bought A Boy and his Blob, Little Kings Story and New Super Mario Bros. Wii last year and I've already bought Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars and No More Heroes 2 this year, so the Wii has been getting some love. Looking forward to the spring releases.

Games like this make people hate how poor the actually console is.

Gr815174d ago

Can you put together a coherent sentence so we can try and understand what the hell you're trying to say?

awesomesauce215174d ago

I think some hardcore gamers will see these games and go "wow." They might even spring for a wii, but the majority don't just want one or two games to pick up, then have to wait two more years for something else new.

Good looking games either way.

Zackstorm5174d ago

It's not just these two games. This year alone the Wii, like all three consoles, is being treated very well gamewise. There's undeniably some great "hardcore"(pffft such a stupid term) games on Wii. I think these new releases definitely solidify the Wii's library.

Xander-RKoS5174d ago

You think that would normally be the case...but seeing as this year alone seems to offer game like:

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom
No More Heroes 2
Monster Hunter Tri
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Metroid: Other M
Red Steel 2
Endless Ocean 2
Shiren the Wanderer
Legend of Zelda (Wii)
Fragile
Arc Rise Fantasia
Tales of Graces
(and I suspect) The Last Story

being all exclusive titles...it doesn't seem like that can be an excuse anymore for not owning a Wii.

Gr815174d ago (Edited 5174d ago )

All I know is I'm going to be quite the happy gamer with these upcoming games as well as others that weren't mentioned.

EvilTwin5174d ago

There's really too much good stuff coming out. I simply can't buy all of it. I've already come to the conclusion that MH:Tri will go to the back burner in favor of RS2.

Now I'll have to wait to buy S&P2 (and maybe even SMG2). Metroid is my priority, and has been since the last E3.

Gr815174d ago

March Belongs to RS2 as far as I'm concerned. But I will be picking up the MH3 Demo Discs at Gamestop to see what its about. S&P is fantastic, it is like what Kid Icarus is to Metroid, S&P is to StarFox. May is Mario, but for me its all about Metroid. If I could only get two games in that 4 month span it'd be RS2 and Other M.

I was worried, very worried about Other M but even now amongst my excitement I'm still left in the dark. And that's a typical metroid feeling. I want more info! E3 should be a real blowout as the game releases 2 weeks after the big show. Plus we know Zelda is finally coming. And I've a sinking feeling other M+ games will be showcased as well.

Prepare for the Viral Marketers and butt hurt choir (fanboy) talking points to bombard the Wii sections in the coming weeks and months. Should be entertaining..or tiresome.

EvilTwin5174d ago

Nintendo doesn't usually have much trouble selling their core first-party titles.

Metroid is an exception. It has never really been the kind of blockbuster that Mario is, and it doesn't get the across-the-spectrum love that Zelda does.

Other M is a risk. And a very intriguing one, at that.

Gen0ne5174d ago

... what's up with that? I never understood why Metroid doesn't sell that well. When really it should sell like hot cakes. I blame it on poor marketing mostly. When a Halo game comes out, you can't get 10 feet away from your house without seeing some kind of Master Chief billboard or to the corner store and have a MC standee holding a damn snickers bar at you. NIntendo choked by only advertising Corruption on the Wii Channel. I hope they take this one a little more seriously. Ninty made ( and are making ) their money this gen and in business, you gotta spend money to make money. Spend some damn money on advertising for Metroid, Ninty. Samus deserves it.

EvilTwin5174d ago

Beats me, megatron. I'm sure Nintendo has often wondered the same thing, lol.

Perhaps the setting and genre just focus it toward a narrow audience. I mean, Mario is a bright, colorful platformer. Link is on an epic countryside adventure (you could almost substitute Middle Earth for Hyrule in LoZ:TP).

Samus? She's in a sci-fi story where she genocides an entire species.

And she's usually alone in a very threatening environment; Link gets sidekicks and townsfolk, Mario has Luigi, the Princess, the toads, etc.

Don't get me wrong, Metroid has sold well, just not blockbuster numbers. And I don't think it'll ever be GTA or COD. But maybe Other M appeals to a little wider audience so that Metroid finally gets the sales it deserves.

I JUST REALLY WANT NINTENDO TO MAKE A "REAL" MARIO KART GAME THATS

NOT FOR KINDERGARDENERS....I WISH THEY WOULD MAKE A MARIOKART WII

GAME THAT PLAYED LIKE THE 64 VERSION...THAT'D BE AMAZING..O WELL

asdr3wsfas5174d ago (Edited 5174d ago )

n64 isn't "real" mariokart. The SNES had "real" mariokart and the wii version is a return to that style. They literally tried to compete with SNES Mariokart in terms of quality when making the game. That's real mariokart.

hatchimatchi5173d ago

i definitely have to disagree with you oobob.

I think the only game that resembles snes mariokart is the one for the gba.

Mario kart wii reminded me of mario kart ds but not as good.

Mario kart 64 and double dash are the best in the series, my favorite being double dash. The tracks in that game are freaking awesome.

Nioh games definitely up there at the top alongside Ninja Gaiden BLK.

LoveSpuds466d ago

There is a decent fan base for the Nioh games, but still think they are criminally overlooked and under appreciated.

I just bought the PS5 collection to replay them again with all their DLC, a sweet collection for my games shelf for sure.

Yea, those gardens haven't been plowed in over 10 years now though. Imagine if they cultivated it, let it grow again.

Starman69466d ago

Amazing what ya can do with a samurai sword lol 🤣

tehpees3467d ago

The honourable mention though.

TheSenorCheese467d ago

originally it wasn't going to be included because of their take on Samus' character. But the gameplay's actually not bad.

Vits466d ago

Honestly, I don't know if we can even blame them for that take. Nintendo's Sakamoto was credited as the writer and from what we learned later with the Retro Studios interviews for the Prime series, Nintendo apparently never saw Samus as this stoic badass that most of the west imagined her as. Going as far as describing her as "motherly".

shinoff2183466d ago

Ninja Gaiden was dope but I don't really care for alot of their games.

Reggie originally thought Metroid: Other M would be a "killer moment" for the series

Well it almost killed Metroid so…

PhillyDillyDee712d ago

Yeah we all loved how you took a stoic badass and turned her into a whiny shrew. All those writers should be sacked.

Terry_B712d ago

Sometimes, I doubt that Reggie was that great for Nintendo after all.

2D Metroid Retrospective: Bring on the Remakes

VGChartz's Paul Broussard: "The early-mid 2000s saw something of a golden age for Metroid games. After an eight year hiatus, Metroid burst back onto the scene in dramatic fashion. Largely buoyed by the critical and financial success of Metroid Prime (at least, relative to other Metroid releases), Metroid saw a whopping six new titles between 2002 and 2007, as well as one rather bizarre pinball spin-off that wound up being much better than it had any right to be. Metroid had never been this popular before."

Never though the day would come where I say this but I’d be fine with having every 2D Metroid remade the way Dread plays.

INMATEofARKHAM931d ago

I just want them all in the Switch.
