The Witcher 3 - Out Of Its 4 Million Sold Copies, 1.3 Million Were From The PC Version

DSOGaming writes: "A couple of days ago, CD Projekt RED revealed that it has sold 4 million copies of The Witcher 3: Wild on all platforms. Naturally, we were really interested in the PC sales and today we can safely say that PC gamers embraced CDPR as it appears that almost one third of the overall sales were from the PC."

Any news on the share of the market for The Witcher between the consoles?

kraenk123242d ago (Edited 3242d ago )

should be around 1:2 like most games recently and matching the sales numbers. So this leaves 2,7 million of which 1,8 million should be PS4 and 0,9 XBox One. Something like that.

curtis923242d ago

PS4 streams of witcher dominate XBO version at any given time with number of viewers. PS4 version is selling better on Amazon. Safe to assume...

CKPan3241d ago

XBOX gamers play most FPS, race, sport games, they don't know other type of games.

Gwynbleidd3241d ago

You forgot the /s at the end of your comment!

I play plenty of RPGs on Xbox.

xDHAV0K24x3241d ago

indies and platformers too!

curtis923242d ago

Just goes to show, PC market is alive and well if you're true to the gamers. PC gamers don't buy into BS or hype. If you make a good, honest product, they'll support the **** out of it. Make one wrong move, though... nope.

F0XHOUND3242d ago

It sold just as well on consoles lol.... its the game you buy in to, not the platform. Millions on PC wanted this, likewise on console, the game was epic and true gamers buy into that regardless of platform.

You make out you're more savvy or intelligent if you own a PC lmao!

Utalkin2me3242d ago (Edited 3242d ago )

While there is over 75+ million steam users, and im sure not all sales was steam users. So if you did use all sales from steam, that just a little over 1% that bought the game.

I really honestly thought that the PC version in the first month would at the very least hit 4 mill. Thats one of the reason why Pc only developers have either jumped strictly to consoles or are multiplatform pc/consoles. They just can't make it on strictly PC anymore with big budget games.

T9003242d ago

If the game was PC only they wouldnt have needed to spend 35M on advertisement either, advertisement is mostly done to cater to the console market, advertisement actually costs more than the cost of the game.. Game would have been easily profitable on PC.

Notellin3242d ago

@T900

Your statement is pure speculation and the developers even stated they needed console versions to support the development of the game.

DragonKnight3241d ago

@T900: "If the game was PC only they wouldnt have needed to spend 35M on advertisement either, advertisement is mostly done to cater to the console market, advertisement actually costs more than the cost of the game.. Game would have been easily profitable on PC."

I'll let CDPR field that one.

Somebody3241d ago

"They just can't make it on strictly PC anymore with big budget games."

In contrast, smaller console devs are having a hard time on consoles because of extremely cramped market place so we're seeing a lot of ports to the PC. In other word all three platforms are too risky to invest in alone.

From what I've seen the console market is where a game dev "win-or-die" while the PC market is where they "try-and-try" again(e.g. the recent two Kickstarter projects from former console devs).

@Curtis

PC gamers aren't a "tribe", they don't all think alike at all. In fact they are the least homogenised of all gamers and range from the most casual to the most hardcore.
Your statement is quite hilarious though.

rhap3241d ago

And there are people disagreeing haha They must be indeed a tribe!! Hell, I've over 300 games on Steam and been playing on PC since forever, but never left the consoles behind since I got my very first Master System.

funkybudda3241d ago (Edited 3241d ago )

@Curtis92,

it's easy to blanket that statement and think PC sold 1/3, but if you do the math, most PC version of the game were discounted at around $35 to $40, while all the console copies were sold at minimum of $55 and up. You can do the math which is more profitable and why company should care about console version more than the PC version of any games.

ChristopherJack3241d ago

Why would retail pricing affect profits for CDPR? They sell their games at wholesale prices to retailers who then sell it to customers but before that CDPR has to pay for many production fees for the console versions that either doesn't exist or are significantly cheaper on Pc so it's likely they pass those costs onto the retailers who proceed to pass it on to us.

Neo_Zeed3241d ago

It goes to show that PC gamers ain't buying anything if it ain't in some insane Steam sale. Steam alone has 125+ million users. So PC sales should have smoked PS4's much smaller sales potential. But they didn't and that almost never happens. That's why CD Projekt Red said they couldn't afford for Witcher 3 to be PC only. PC has the largest install base but still doesn't pull the sales numbers it should.

Wonder how many PS4 copies were sold

playstation4epic3242d ago

Probably more than the Xbone and PC

TXIDarkAvenger3242d ago

Heh, and they say this website isn't biased.

DragonKnight3241d ago

"Heh, and they say this website isn't biased."

playstation4epic's statement is not proof of bias. Based on current market information, it's at least a reasonable estimate.

PizzaSteve3242d ago

Should be about 2m for PS4 and 1m for XB1.

xTheMercenary_3241d ago (Edited 3241d ago )

Gotta disagree it is highly likely the ps4 sold more but if you have 2m for ps4 and 1m for xbox one that means the pc version sold 1m, but as stated in the title pc is 1.3m. My guess is ps4 is 1.6m, pc is 1.3m and xbox one is 1.1m

xTheMercenary_3241d ago

Im going to guess maybe 1.1 million for xbox one and 1.6 million for ps4

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan21d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.

Tomb Raider 1
Driver 1
Abe’s Odyssey
FF6
King of Fighters 94
Mortal Kombat OG
LINK 2 the past
Street Fighter 2
Resident Evil 1

Inverno44d ago

Infinite but not the first two games? Witcher 3 but not the first two games?? GTA V but not literally any of the games before it??? Portal 2 but not the first? Also if you're going to play Shadow of The Colossus play the remaster and not the remake. Can't say I disagree with the list but my man it's all over the place.

Name Last Name44d ago

I mean some sequels are objectively better and you don’t need to play the whole series.

Inverno44d ago

But most of these games have a story to follow, sure you can catch up with a YouTube vid but where's the fun in that?

LucasRuinedChildhood44d ago (Edited 44d ago )

A list like this isn't telling you not to play the previous games if you want to. It's just giving you legendary games to play.

But tbh, you don't always have to force yourself to play every entry in a franchise to get to the better ones.

- The vast majority of Witcher 3 players never played the first 2 and had a great time. The first 2 games aren't in the same league.
- The GTA games are self-contained with the odd fun reference. You can easily jump into any of them.
- The Shadow Of The Colossus remake looks and controls better than the original (plus it has a 60fps option while the remaster is just 30fps). New players will enjoy it more.
- Portal 2 is a lot better than Portal 1 and takes the concept much further gameplay-wise. Storywise, Portal 1 is fairly light too. Not that you shouldn't play it but realistically ... you'd love Portal 2 whether you play it or not (at lot of Portal 2 players have never played 1).

Bioshock 1 is the only one I agree with you on simply because it's one the best games of all time and arguably better than Infinite. No other setting like Rapture.

Looking at the list, I'd recommend playing Uncharted 1 before 2 but no doubt, 2 is the legendary one you have to play.

Inverno44d ago

I get it, but that's just my opinion on his opinion. I just think that before you play a sequel you should still play what came before it. Maybe it's just me but i find it fascinating playing through the first game in a series and seeing how it has evolved through its sequels. Like I said I don't disagree with the list, other than SoTC which I strongly believe the remaster of the original should be played above the remake.

AuraAbjure44d ago

Awesome list! Hot take on Fear (and it's hard af expansion Persaus Mandate!) Bioshock Infinite is stellar, so is the Witcher 3 and you nailed it by having Ocarina of Time. So many fantastic games! Gotta play 'em all! Next one on my list is Prey after I beat Dead Space 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.
