Reports of Japanese gaming markets decline are exaggerated

Destructoid's Brittany Vincent; " A popular rumor in gaming nowadays is the decline of the Japanese gaming industry. This seems to be espoused by news outlets, financial reporters, and even Japanese developers themselves. Through various interpretations of the data Japan does seem to be falling out of love with the hobby, especially on consoles. However, the truth is much more benign than the rumors would lead you to believe."

Seems old, but what's that?

XiSasukeUchiha3573d ago

PS4 could be the reason, I don't know, but who's knows?

eyeofcore3573d ago

Japan is like No Games on PlayStation 4 and just backing out from it.

It has no bombs or bullets to speak off...

Godmars2903573d ago

Its that the games and support which should have been there in the first place, the arcade middleware titles like Gundam and JRPGs, and showing up.

I expect the same will be true of the PS4: for all the graphical power and AAA title hype, its going to be the slightly upgraded "cheap" titles that bring in the otaku.

DCfan3573d ago

I don't know what you mean by cheap or otaku.
I enjoyed several "otaku" games despite not being into anime or whatever because most of them are fun and don't take themselves seriously.
Mainly the Neptune series.

Godmars2903572d ago

"I don't know what you mean by cheap or otaku."

I mean little to no improvement in production value. A PS3 game that's basically the "original" PS2 version.

masterfox3573d ago

Of course is in declined, mediocre games, japanese games flooded with almost anime girls only games, developers are lazy as hell almost all of them want to move mobile gaming(squareenix), Nintendo flooding the japanese market with short period games, in other words the japanese developers are killing the gaming market, only a very few of them want to push the envelope in terms of gaming yes I'm talking about Kojima, there are other circumstances that is affecting games in Japan but all of them are pointing to the developers fault. Putting games on the PS4 I think is even easier and cheaper than ever before, I mean look what western/UK Indies are doing.

So developing costs getting higher I think is a complete BS, Japan just got lazy in game development thats the main issue.

DCfan3573d ago (Edited 3573d ago )

lol.
You haven't been playing many japanese games have you?!
Killing the game market?! what??!!! XD
So tell me what are the western devs doing aside from milking dlcs and making same old shooters?

madjedi3572d ago (Edited 3572d ago )

Versus japanese devs making the same old jrpgs, monster hunter clones or visual novels/dating simulators.

Drop the bullshit western games are garbage and japanese games are superior mentality.

They make different genres that appeal to different tastes, neither is better than the other except in ones opinion.

@fox Man you need to do some reading up, before you comment on this topic ever again.

Development cost rising this gen is absolutely true, that's why most jrpgs not named final fantasy, look like little more than up rezzed ps2 games vs most western games.

Japanese devs are more comfortable with a high lvl ps2 or low end ps3 game budget, it has jack and shit to do with the devs being lazy, untalented or other non sense.

wow dont you have such a short attention span?

Fallout 4's 'next gen' update is over 14 gigs, breaks modded saves, & doesn't change much at all

We were expecting problems with mod support, but there are a lot of other issues.

isarai7h ago

Wow what the actual hell 🤣🤣🤣

just_looken6h ago

This is why you get the GOG version on gog you can select the version of the game to download.

On pc fallout 4 fallout new vegas and skyrim are all broken on steam because they all got the same "next gen" update.

Skyrim dec 2023
https://www.pcgamer.com/sky...

Can not find new vegas but anyone that modded it knows the script extender there was also broken

Valkyrye5h ago

Not accidental, they want modders to stop modding their older games to force them to mod Shitfield.

just_looken3h ago

There doing the same on starfield with a mods store and blocking mods

There goal is like blizzard and what they did with fallout 76 you make mods they can sell and you become a slave.

On skyrim they have "trusted" mod devs now basically a badge that lets your mod on the store you get a crumb of the sale when someone buys it.

Inverno1h ago

lol to the disagrees, the last Skyrim update broke mods too. They've been trying to kill mods to monetize them in creation club for years, it's not a stretch that they purposely put out patches just to break free mods.

porkChop20m ago

The disagrees are from people who have common sense. They aren't trying to kill mods. Most mods for any game will break with a new update because they rely on files/code that have been changed. This isn't new. Even with Bethesda this would happen way before the creation club. Mod support is literally one of the things that got Bethesda to where they are, and they're one of the only devs that releases comprehensive mod tools for each of their games.

Chocoburger1h ago

Over 14 GBs and doesn't change much at all? What? Taking up that much drive space for a pathetic 'remastering' is shameful.

Par for Bethesda.

Aussiesummer8m ago

It's not a remaster, it's a next gen update.

Why Monopolies In Gaming Must Not Be Allowed

As of right now, there are no monopolies in the games industry, and for the sake of the medium as a whole, they never should either.

thorstein5h ago

Shouldn't be allowed in any field.

Inverno1h ago

And yet the biggest tech companies in America are essentially that. They buy up all the small comps only to kill them off and steal what they have, and if they can't buy em they bleed them to death.

jwillj2k443m ago

Eventually they’ll realize the value is with the employee not the company. Buying an IP means nothing if the people who contributed are let go. They’ll get it one day.

MrCrimson2m ago

tech is different because they buy threats and then kill them. Twitter bought Vine and did nothing with it. Despite people seemingly liking it. Could've had tiktok a decade before bytedance. go figure.

Zenzuu1h ago

Monopolies shouldn't be allowed regardless. Not just for gaming.

MrCrimson4m ago

They buy IPs not talent. That's why these buyouts never work and the IPs die. Right now it's too expensive to develop games - but I expect that to shift maybe as AI tools can make it easier. The best games have been indie games for awhile as big developers fuck their ips to death with "games as a service" -

Hopefully Microsoft will go back to the original story line and get away from that woke nonsense from the last Gears game Gears of Woke! But were talking about Microsoft so all the betting money is on more of the same woke nonsense.
