New Source possibly confirms Durango features – “100% BC, no always-on feature ever considered”

A new source, found by NeoGAF member Cheesemeister, has potentially confirmed the final release specifications and features of Microsoft's upcoming Durango console. And these features are more than what any fanboy could have hoped for.

Good_Guy_Jamal4040d ago

Oh so NOW people want to do the sensible thing and wait until Microsoft confirms.
I wonder why that is. Why the change in approach to rumors folks?

iGAM3R-VIII4039d ago (Edited 4039d ago )

Very true, it is because when the rumours is going against them, they feel like it will have an advantage against them. Though mind you, the way you reacted makes you in the image as a Xbox fanboy so in theory you would both be in the wrong so next time I would just suggest not saying anything

Anyway when he says "Durango will be running Windows 8" this will be very interesting. I would want to see how that works out and everything else isn't really new things. This could be the most legit leak possible.

BUT he does say that he was TOLD these rumours which means that this could be less credible.

Nevertheless, if these rumours are true, it would be good to see how MS can utilize these features.

Damn E3 just has to be in June. and the MS reveal and rumoured PS4 reveal have to be in May -_-

reynod4039d ago (Edited 4039d ago )

I am a PC gamer hence not biased to ward any of the consoles. I think PS fans on this site have been rather biased and unreasonable.

When there is a bad rumor for the Xbox they will pretty much rejoice at it, however when a good rumor surfaces most of them will say "oh let MS confirm" lol. Funny how any good rumor for PS is taken as confirmation.

There is actually high chance the next Xbox will feature BC. Reason being Xbox 360 was already very close to PC architecture.

Its hard emulating the CELL with its SPU's however, emulating a PowerPC such as the one on the Xbox 360 shouldnt a challenge to MS.

I would think there is a high chance the next Xbox actually offers BC.

blackstrr4114039d ago

When a sony fan sees something positive bout nextbox rumours they always say let wait for mc to confirm. Pathetic if u ask me

isarai4039d ago

Who says tentonsoftube is one of the same guys who took the other rumors as fact?

papashango4039d ago

good guy jamal...

good guy jamal indeed

talisker4039d ago

@reynod: if you call IBM PowerPC RISC processor from X360 "close to PC", you clearly have no slightest clue what you're talking about.

Good_Guy_Jamal4039d ago

@isarai, check out Hingle's post @1.2 for proof that Tentonsoftube has flip flopped his approach to rumors according to his bias.

Saigon4039d ago

From reading the post, it looks to be fake. After reading through the post, some of the wording is really off. Many times the author refers to MS as his company and then changes and says he is a developer developing a game on the platform. the other item that keyed me a little was that he was directly referring to the Durango. Last I check most leaks referred to the Next Xbox directly and not the development system. Also, some items made no sense what so ever, the 360 SoC combined with the current x86 processor would require a substantial cost to apply development tactics as well as create/manufacture the system.

This is the reason why i would like MS to just release something about the system. At least confirm its existence or provide something because we are going to get fanboys releasing content based on the applied rumors. Other than that we need to wait until the speculative meeting in May or E3.

Peppino74039d ago

Its great news regardless.!

malokevi4039d ago

Positive news? Lets not react hastily, now...

lol. Did I just say that.... N4G?

Boody-Bandit4039d ago (Edited 4039d ago )

I'm a 360 gamer and have been saying all along always-on isn't a deal breaker for me. The only rumor I was/am concerned about is the ability to play used and rental games. As long as MS supports them. I'm golden.

I also have said I'm waiting for E3. I don't buy into rumors, only facts. E3 can't get here soon enough so we will ALL know fact from fiction. WOW what this place will turn into if all these (always-on and wont support used or rentals) rumors were indeed nonsense.

Either way I am so looking forward to next gen. I'm in the process of upgrading my gaming room while waiting on it's arrival.

sikbeta4039d ago

Ohohohohoho! all dat trolling for no reason lol guess some of those who wanted to believe all the bad rumors will hide for some time ;)

MadLad4039d ago

Welcome to N4G.

It's only speculation if it's not confirmed and not pro-Sony related.

ceed9114039d ago

I was going to just comment on this and put "lolz"

but Jamal...my man

superterabyte4039d ago

Actually everyone has been saying wait till Microsoft says something. Including me. Oh and for good measure what do you guys plan on playing next gen?

GameSpawn4039d ago (Edited 4039d ago )

To those saying PowerPC cannot be emulated on an x86 architecture... Apple's Rosetta say's "HI!".

However, Rosetta applications run like a giant turd. It was only meant to transition PPC users to Intel slowly and give developers time to create Universal binaries or purely Intel ones. Apple has since dumped Rosetta in 10.7.x and up.

So, Microsoft "could" do it in software, but it will either run very slow and/or have "glitches".

The only real solution for Microsoft to have 100% BC is to actually put an Xbox SoC (System on a Chip - a combination of the current Xbox PPC CPU and its GPU) in the system along side the x86 hardware (much like Sony did with the PS2 hardware in the first PS3s). This probably won't happen due to the insane overhead involved in the cost of the system and also the heat that would inevitably be generated -- I'm sure you don't want "RRoD-gate 2.0".

bangshi4039d ago

OK so here are some reasons this is a fake.

- He/she claims to not know a lot of things. This is because he/she does not need to know those things. If the person is legit, then that is fine - there is a good chance you only get told what you need to know. However, on that basis - he or she cannot say with any degree of certainty that always-online was never considered. Because he or she said themselves many times in the pastebin, that they don't know everything.

It is therefore likely that they would also not know if at any point it was every considered.

I bet you it was. It is a very, very strong anti-piracy measure. They may not have gone through with the idea, but to say it was never considered? Don't believe it for a moment.

In planning you go all-out. You bring poor ideas to the table, you bring outlandish ideas to the table. Why? Because they can be worked on, fleshed out and turned into a good idea with work or it can spark someone else to say 'ah yeah good idea, but what if instead of xyz we do xyy'.

Another reason is that this person claims to be a Software Engineer but not a game developer.

On that basis, he or she either works for a company developing apps (ie. Netflix) or develops tools/engines for game companies. They don't know about the OS. Netflix devs would as they have to integrate with it - so that only leaves a tools or engine software engineer.

That person would know about how the 360 SoC integrates with the 720. No question. They have to know every in and out of the console.

And even if they weren't told, they would want to know.

Hell even many people on here who are just laymen want to know.

But he/she is dismissing it as no big deal.

Another reason - the controller. They know it looks the same, but feels different, but has never touched it. Bullshit.

One more reason - there is zero new information here, except that the 360 SoC can be utilised alongside the 720 SoC.

Everything else we already knew about. It just looks like they have read the leaked PDF from 2011 as everything in this 'leak' is in that document.

Saigon4039d ago

i don't get it, The rumors that were originally applied to the PS4 and Next Xbox came from very creditable sources. Such sources as Edge, Kataku, IGN, VG, Euro Gamer, NeoGaf, etc. They all seem to have similar rumors. We all considered them creditable, right.

With everything that has established in the last few weeks, we start receiving rumors from unknown sources. The funny part about this is that we are believing these unknown sources and stating their content to be true. My question is why? i don't believe the source because their are too many flaws. there is great content within this rumor posted, but if you look into where the info came from and how it was established, you will see it a fishy. 'Something Smells'. I just trying to figure out why the sudden change.

My stance is that we wait until MS confirms the details of their console. Sony has already confirmed the majority of the PS4 system and there is still more to learn.

Godz Kastro4039d ago

All of the sudden... Plus 1 Jamal

fr0sty4039d ago (Edited 4039d ago )

Why assume that tentonsoftube was one of those people who was jumping to conclusions before? That only makes you look stupid if it isn't true. If it is, providing evidence would be a good idea.

KwietStorm_BLM4039d ago

Lol why does someone always act like one voice of reason is flip flopping? Like they speak for everyone?

adorie4039d ago

Sigh. Regardless of what rumors, we should always wait for the facts. I'm going to come back and see disagrees but that's okay, there's plenty of irrational people on this site which kills any surprise for going against logic.

In the spirit of things, everyone gets a bubble, then I'm gone.

brich2334039d ago

Because its to good to be true, lol

asmith23064039d ago

That is not true at all. Any recent article I have seen about the PS4 or next Xbox has always been filled with people saying wait for an announcement. Stop trying to get a dig in at something that wasn't there.

andibandit4039d ago (Edited 4039d ago )

@saigon

I read the post right after reading your comment. The difference in wording is because the author refers to diffrent sources. Also i could find a single sentence where the author refers to ms as his company.....please give an in context example

On a personal note, ill believe it when the words come out ms mouth

Emulators to run powerpc software on x86 processors such as pearpc and sheepshaver have been around forever, run fast and are extremely stable and a new ati gpu being able to run code for an old ati gpu is obviously going to be easy. Backwards compatibility seems like a no-brainer to me.

AlphaJunk4038d ago

I am a M$ fan and don't see the problem or why anyone else is concerned or has a problem with what I support or how I spend my freakin' money. I'm pretty sure anyone that is making my product choices their concern should be worried about themselves and why they care what I am buying since it is really only a consumer product.

NewMonday4038d ago

this sounds more realistic than previous rumors, but their are 2 sticking points to this:

* how can the separate 360 SOC add to the overall Durango power without complicating development just to get about 15% extra power?

* how can the games for windows tie to the Durango marketplace? do they have one royalty rate and one submission process?

MysticStrummer4038d ago

"Oh so NOW people want to do the sensible thing and wait until Microsoft confirms.
I wonder why that is. Why the change in approach to rumors folks?"

As if MS fans haven't done the exact same thing, just in the opposite way. They've rejected negative rumors as hearsay, then pointed at positive rumors and squealed with joy. Let's keep it real.

ziggurcat4038d ago

@ good_guy_jamal

"Oh so NOW people want to do the sensible thing and wait until Microsoft confirms.
I wonder why that is. Why the change in approach to rumors folks?"

oh, so NOW you're choosing to accept this rumour as fact just because it contradicts the negative rumours...

JP13694038d ago

I like how you say that as if he must be a Sony fanboy since he wants to wait for MS to comment. The article states that the VGLeaks are accurate about everything except the 360 SOC, which would mean this new rumor corroborates the old rumor of the new Xbox being slower than PS4. So I ask you, why would anyone that's asking for us to wait for confirmation have any ulterior motive against MS? His response is nothing more than the sensible reply to what is basically the same basic rumor. Backwards compatibility isn't that big of a deal. I use it just as much on my Slim PS3 as I did on the fat, which is never. If MS does offer it, good for them. Having said that, it's not as if that's the thing that will sway the market in their favor if they don't already have a lot of other things going for them.
P.S. To anyone that actually thinks a CPU/GPU from 2005 is going to add significantly to the power of the system, you're kidding yourself. It'd be great if they could use it to run kinect and OS though.

Army_of_Darkness4038d ago

Cool... Now I won't have to feel sorry for the xbox 720 owners;-)

SkyGamer4038d ago

I always knew that bc would be there. MS owns the ChipSets in the X360. Why go through all that trouble not to offer bc????

bakasora4038d ago

Now this changes everything

elmaton984038d ago

Rumors are rumors but what is being said of the ps4 is true and besides if what this guys are saying it's true then I can't wait to hear what ms has in store for all of us.

Saigon4038d ago

@andibandit

After reading it over once again, a few hours later, he didn't make that reference, and i apologize for the confusion on my end, but it still doesn't change my stance about creditable sources. Technically MS and Sony is the most creditable you can get when gathering information but there are some websites that have very detailed and contain creditable information as I stated in my first post on this subject. Because the source is coming from some run of the mill person that created and then deleted their account on NeoGaf within minutes of posting the content (a little exaggeration on my end) seems a little suspect. And people are stating this as truth. It kind of reminds me of that Russian Website that laid out all the plans for the Next Xbox and the PS4 and implied how the Next Xbox had all this content. Later it was discovered as rubbish.

Coming into the Next generation I sort of expected the Next Xbox to be very powerful in comparison to the PS4; though every creditable source is stating otherwise. i don't care which is more powerful because I am going to get both regardless. My main problem in this case is not the system but the source.

My whole point is that I can't understand why people believe this mess and it hasn't come from a true creditable source such as MS or Sony itself.

CommonSense4038d ago (Edited 4038d ago )

Jamal, I think we all know the answer to this... These people are idiots. A disgrace to the gaming community.

@reynod: "I think PS fans on this site have been rather biased and unreasonable."

that's putting it mildly. these people are complete douche bags.

nix4038d ago

everyone took "always online" as a rumour in the beginning but there were lot's of devs talking/discussing about it.. which never let the topic die. and then let's not forget the twitter fiasco. i mean that one incident made everyone think it was true.

there were so many circumstances that actually led everyone believe that it was true.

Karpetburnz4038d ago

You know this kind of goes both ways, When Its negative rumours Xbox fanboys say "Its only a rumour, wait for the facts" but if its a positive rumour Xbox fanboys all agree with it.

You cant call out a single group of fanboys for doing this, both PS3 and Xbox fanboys will only want to believe what ever rumour suits them.

gigoran4038d ago

And what you are doing is any different? Oooooook....

How do all of you guys get "Well said"? Not one of you said anything well.

Anyway, naturally hoping these rumors are true.

SkyGamer4036d ago

It's not a hard concept. The only thing you need is the triple core processor. The memory can be shared, beef up the eDRAM to 32 MB instead of 10 and a newer ATI video card with x86 cpu. The only tricky part would be to use the triple core dual thread alongside the 8 core x86. If they can achieve that, they would have a clear advantage. Triple core running at 3.2 ghz w/dual threads to work alongside 8 x86 cores w/32 mb eDRAM and 8 GB DDR3? Bring it on Micro!

I own both 360 and PS3 but I game more on my PS3 than 360. A lot more. I also believe that Sony's rules this generation when it comes to software power. They have diverse amount of games for everyone! Do I hate my 360? Helllll noo! Why would I? Do I get paid by SONY or MS? It's quite the opposite actually.

I am glad that this rumor is out and about. I am getting SICK AND TIRED of these articles about XBOX 720 having always online features and what not.

Seriously, gamers need to shut up and play their games on their choice of platform. I have been saying this for so long, we should wait till E3.

We as gamers should WANT to see Nintendo, Sony and MS do well. We need a healthy competition between these companies. It only helps our cause.

And yeah, I have been saying that for a long time. You can even check my comment history.

They will have a pretty big advantage over Sony if this is true. A lot of people will big this up as the sole reason to go with the next Xbox over the PS4.
For me personally though it really doesn't matter.
I'm only interested in next gen games for next gen consoles. I wish Microsoft would just announce their console already! too many rumours! XD

Kyosuke_Sanada4039d ago

It's what keeping the spotlight on the console and if I was Microsoft I would try to estimate a peak before releasing any news. The interwebs is such a fickle beast.......

Godz Kastro4039d ago (Edited 4039d ago )

I could do with out BC on the 360 although I want it. Same with ps4, I didn't own a ps3 for most of this gen and their are some exclusives I want to play. I want to know what all the hub-bub about journey is and last of us.

So... I hope both systems do it...
-PS cause I haven't played their games
-XBOX - because I've kept games I like and would like to keep some of them. Like the COD Zombie games...

rainslacker4038d ago

Running the 360 processor in parallel was the most interesting thing. It seems that goes against the rumored Mini/Durango leak last week though.

Interesting concept, but seems like it wouldn't be practical from a timing perspective.

I'm with you though. I'm ready for MS to announce it so we can stop speculating and hopefully having the start of the thread filled with fan boy nonsense.

THE TRUTH4039d ago (Edited 4039d ago )

I can't agree with the rumor based on the fact that this "insider" would have to be really high on the food chain to know 100% without a doubt that microsoft NEVER considered a always online console.

I think the truth about durango is probably somewhere in the middle of the negative and positive rumors. Microsoft just needs to announce the console and clear up all this BS.

MariaHelFutura4039d ago

Yep. When multiple rumors start popping up there is usually some truth to them. They just suffer the sewing circle effect and end up exaggerated or under stated.

rainslacker4038d ago

I wouldn't doubt that all the big 3 considered it. I also believe that all the big 3 decided it would be a bad idea, and that the market isn't ready for it.

I know I talked a lot of hate about the idea, but never believed MS would make a mistake that big.

MariaHelFutura4039d ago

This is great (if true). I don't care much for b/c, but always on makes it a no go for me.

OlgerO4039d ago

If these rumours are true then my interest in the next xbox has been sparked. Cant wait to see what they do with the thing. I hate monthly subscriptions though so if it has that to play online then i wont even consider it.

dcbronco4039d ago

@THE TRUTH

I'm not sure that person would have to be so high. It say's the truth was hidden until now. That makes perfect sense and jibes with the rumor last week that the Durango has dual APUs. Now that we're within a month or two of a reveal(and point of no adjustments before launch), it was time to give the developers the big picture.

The big question is whether or not this is the same exact chip or a new and improved chip. An improved chip could handle services and BC at the same time. I would think it's an updated chip. Maybe a Power7 CPU attached to the long rumored 6670 GPU. Still the same basic architecture so it will run 360 games, but far more powerful and still very cheap. That would be a huge amount of power. And AMD has been adding ARM cores to APUs for security so that part could still be true.

Also and this would have bigger implications to me. If the OS is full blown Windows(maybe Blue) will it be able to play PC games. I would think not because they get no license fee for that. But it would open up a ton more games to Durango. But there were also those rumors that the Windows 8 store would be accessible on the Xbox.

OC_MurphysLaw4039d ago

I agree, the biggest part of this rumor is the OS allowing games for pc to be played. Probably not full blown pc games but I certainly could see the indie stuff that is present in the Windows 8 store having no issue assuming controller support is present. This could also explain why MS was not so active on the indie scene at GDC, they feel confident they will get indies with a cheap license fee. Also explains why they dropped XNA support. All again "if true".

headblackman4039d ago

I was thinking the something on the next Xbox being able to play PC games. they Xbox may not have the license (or they may) but on the back of every PC game it says compatible with Windows (and then it gives the versions of windows along with the minimal to best specs to play the game on) so that could be the loop hole or the plan the whole time since xbox 360

THE TRUTH4038d ago

Obviously this insider would have to have know about the entire process from start to finish to know with 100% certainty that Microsoft NEVER even though of an always in console. Its not a debatable agrument. I'm not saying he/she is not in the know all I am saying is that this insider source is high up or is BS.

I'm sure whatever Microsoft Has up there sleeve it's somewhere in the middle of the negative and positive Rumors. I don't at all believe that Durango using 360 APU will drastically improve Durangos processing power. That just doesn't make sense.

rainslacker4038d ago

I think PC gaming would be done through something like what GFWL was doing. There is no way MS would allow unlicensed or unsigned code to run on the machine out of the box, and that is what PC software is.

MS would provide the market, and PC devs/pubs could decide to just use a base spec in order to release it on the system, with MS taking a cut. Much like Google or Apple do with their respective stores.

It could also open up the indie scene much like XNA was supposed to do if they have a reasonable marketplace that is heavily visited.

Could be quite a boon for them against Steambox if it gets the major PC AAA support.

Possibly confirms... Is that like kinda sort of maybe.
The rumors that bug me are focus on casual and kinect centric.
I'm sure at E3 they will show lots of games, but will they be more core or more kinect.
The head to head battle between Sony an ms should be fun.
The competition between the 2 has really been beneficial to gamers as a whole

DeadlyFire4039d ago

Always on is true. Just not in the way people think. Sony has confirmed PS4 is always on and instant load up. This is likely the only always on that the X720 has for it as well.

Someone smeared the wording I believe into thinking online was even part of it.

iGamerZero244039d ago

Battery's in the new controller doesn't sound next gen IMO to be homes ! Heck Nintendo's pro controller had 80hrs of battery life ,.so there's no reason for battery packs ! It's 2013 MS...

AngelicIceDiamond4039d ago (Edited 4039d ago )

"just wait for the facts, not speculation."

Ok, I been saying that when the negative rumors were floating about, why is this so different now this is a positive rumor?

This

"The only thing that I do know for definite is that Durango will be running Windows 8. It will essentially be the full version of the OS, minus the desktop side of things. This means it’ll be running the new WinRT framework, which as a side effect also means that contrary to popular belief MS will be the most indie friendly of all the big 3 next gen.
This is because any app/game that is created for the Windows app store will (after adding controller support of course) be playable on Durango.
In other words, any random person worldwide can pay Microsoft a $60 license fee (for the Windows Store) and submit their app/game to the store where millions of people can then download/buy it. No expensive development kits needed."

That would be MONSTROUS. Though I disagree with @Tube we do have to wait for MS word so, its all just rumors.

EDIT: the fact that MS (rumored) will support full backwards compatibility does mean that MS does care about the gamer.

Its what I've been preaching for months now. MS has waaay more teams/support working on this thing. its unfortunate 360 got caught in the middle of MS internal development and growth going into next gen therefor MS couldn't "multitasks" as well with the 360 near the end of its cycle.

Releasing apps while making casuals and developing hardcore titles. Now Obviously that last one wasn't possible with MS because allot of the devs were hard at work with the 720 the past 2 or 3 of years.

To keep this short and sweet MS has more teams and support with the 720 then they ever did with the 360. And a new found openess with indies so expect a bunch of hardcore exclusive titles at E3 as well as great indie support.

if true, the possibilities can be endless.

Cueil4038d ago

many of the games already have Xbox native controller support

MYSTERIO3604039d ago

''AA batteries will make a return'' I hope this is not true, its 2013 i don't want AA batteries but integrated rechargeable ones.

Crazay4039d ago (Edited 4039d ago )

I really have no stomach for integrated rechargeable batteries. The simple fact that I've had to shell out $50+ per controller on my PS3 just because the batteries have stopped charging is more than a little piss off when interchangeable batteries with AA or even AAA batts would have been a simple and inexpensive solution.

What I would like is the ability to toss in off the shelf rechargeables into the controller and allow the controller to recharge them when plugged in.

crazysammy4039d ago

@Crazay don't you think you spend more than $50 on batteries in the same amount of time a PS3 controller dies? I have had DS3s last for YEARS. That would have been easily over $100 in batteries.

I agree though the removable rechargeable would be nice so you don't lose a controller just because a battery dies.

MYSTERIO3604039d ago (Edited 4039d ago )

@crazysammy. Yeah totally agree, removable rechargeable would be a lot better then having to deal with constantly buying and swapping AA batteries.

GetSnooked4038d ago

"don't you think you spend more than $50 on batteries in the same amount of time a PS3 controller dies? "

Nope, When the Xbox 360 released I bought 15 minute rechargable batteries for the controllers. Now here in 2013, I'm still running on those same batteries.

Personally, I'd prefer the rechargable battery method, that way when the batteries begin to die I'd just buy another two batteries.

Actually makes the Durango sound liek it might be worth buying then, or it sounds better than it previously did.

BC is huge...Controller staying the same is huge....Any windows games playable on Durango is huge for gamers and indie market.

If these are true they have an effective counter-punch to Sony.

I still really like what Sony has done with the PS4 though, but I've always loved 360's controller.

I'm glad the choice is actually possibly a hard one now though instead of a no brainer towards PS4.

showtimefolks4039d ago

Can't wait for E3 so we get everything from the console makers them self

coolbeans4038d ago

It's the irony behind who's stating it. This same poster ran amok during the Orth twitter fiasco predicting MS' doom when there's been no substantiated evidence of an "always-on" console.

Thabass4038d ago

@coolbeans - Oh, I see. Well, then I guess that is kinda lulzy.

dcbronco4038d ago

@THE TRUTH

You'd be surprised how much information gets down to lower level employees. There are always "trusted" people that have closer relationships with higher ups than usual that get information most don't have. I worked at a law firm(a well known NY firm) when I was twenty for years and I knew about things most of the other employees never knew about. Personal and business related. It all depends on who you become friends with.

What the 360 APU would bring would be dependent on whether or not it's just the same chip and how they use it. Even if it is the same chip and they use the GPU for compute, it would help in physics and AI. If they modify the parts to work on more like the the AMD design it could act as a discrete GPU.

MS has done a lot of that type of work on their own. The 360 APU was made by them and their design had to be slowed down because it was faster than the parts before MS combine them. I'm sure the parts will be modified to some extent to make them more efficient at the least. But there is a better chance I believe that they will upgrade the parts to vastly increase the power of the console.

APUs can work in parallel. AMD has worked on that before. And modifications that Jaguar brings is all about making separate parts work together including discrete GPUs. These chips write to the same memory address(CPU and GPU). There is no reason to believe more than one APU can't do this. MS patents show system that appear to be built in that way. Look at the PSU link below. MS has been working on this for years.

http://www.psu.com/forums/s...

Cueil4038d ago

<_< that looks a ton like the 720 stuff leaked around... makes me wonder... also I assume only the 360 APU chip will be on board and that thing probably cost hardly anything... if you can off load stuff onto that APU that would help in some of the more mundane task

kenshiro1004038d ago

I've said before that all we're hearing are rumors...

dcbronco4038d ago

Rain,

Normally I would agree about the security aspects of mods and PC code in general. But remember the admitted system architecture leak. It contained ARM cores and the main reason was for TrustZone.

http://www.arm.com/products...

Also AMD figured out a way to place an ARM core on their APUs for security.

http://www.engadget.com/201...

So while it would be open, it should be safe. The inclusion of TrustZone makes you wonder if the next Xbox will be more open. This also may be the reason they dropped XNA. Everything will be moved to the Windows side and still work on the Xbox.

I think there is a lot of truth to the newer rumors. The others were too stupid and self destructive. The newer rumors make more sense. Mark Cerny said that most developers weren't using the full capability of the APUs with the first games. Much like the PS# and 360. So MS holding back the 360 APU wouldn't have mattered. But now that the release is closer and developers have final dev kits, more people have the opportunity to see what is really under the hood.

I think MS has some major surprises in the coming months. Maybe even a Summer 360 S type release. Some people have already set money aside. Many will be working Summer jobs and others will just go with a subscription and subsidized console. The next couple of months will be very interesting. Silence may be golden once more.

CommonSense4038d ago

Right, this is what i would expect people to say once the rumors are positive.

you people couldn't wait to criticize MS when you thought the always-on rumors were true.

damn, this community sucks.

TheSaint4038d ago

Apparently they want to wildly speculate instead. Can't believe you got that many/any disagrees.

otherZinc4038d ago

Yeah, I knew it. I fully expect for the 720 to be backwards compatible, among other things.

However, I'll still wait for M$ to confirm this. I also knew M$ wasnt going to respond to SONY announcing the PS4; M$ didnt have to. SONY isn't a threat to the 360 at this time.

Also, SONY is at a disadvantage with backwards compatibility with the PS4, also, with their PSN transferring all current PS3 games & information to the PS4. M$ will have that ready day 1, SONY wont.

There are search tools available if you choose to use them. Maybe some of them trolls should go get some air too...I don't see you mention anything about them. Karpetburnz4038d ago

Again, this goes both ways, I could say the same thing for Xbox fanboys who dismissed negative rumours because they diddnt want to believe them, now a positive rumour pops up and now fanboys saying they believe it to be true and dissagree with anyone who says "its just a rumour"

The Xbox fanboys calling out others for being hypocrites are actualy being hypocrites themsleves in the process.

If, and thats one big IF, Microsoft come out with these speculations as made by the NeoGAF member:
1. Always Online not required to play games offline
2. Xbox 360 SOC --> 100% Full Backwards compatible with all Xbox 360 games right out of the box
3. Xbox 360 SOC --> Used to help increase 720's processing abilities
4. A slightly revamped controller with new d-pad and lower latency

I'd say those announcements would be well received by everyone. All they would have to do now would be to announce launch/price information and show off a lot of GAMES!

Dno4039d ago

i gotta say I have to agree. I got every system first day and Wii and WII u and now 360 (first years off 360 was awesome now its a DVD player) i dont even play anymore.

Between PC and ps3 i had all the games i wanted. So this gen i was gonna get ps4 and and wait for a nice 720 bundle. but this info looks really good. Might have to look into it more. I wish i had waited on the Wii u tho. i havent played that since it came out. worst first year ever.

kneon4039d ago

If they have gone this route then not everyone will be happy. If they include the 360 guts along with kinect then you can expect the next xbox to be the most expensive next gen console.

dcbronco4039d ago (Edited 4039d ago )

If it's just a regular 360 SoC then it will have little to do with the price. That thing cost them less than a Blu-ray drive now. How do you think they can have a $99 Xbox Mini? Because that chip cost next to nothing. Considering it will be 32nm or even 28nm, it should be no more than $10 to make.

Unless they update it a lot. But the cost will still be no more than $20-25.

kneon4039d ago

It's not just the cost if the chip. Integrating a secondary processing unit increases the complexity of the motherboard and the software, and increases the power and cooling requirements, all that adds to the cost.

malokevi4039d ago (Edited 4039d ago )

Fine by me. A bit of extra money, a bit of added processing power, and full backward compatibility? boooo hooooo.

Whereas playstation owners will watch their entire PS3 library go obsolete as fast as their console dies.

kneon4039d ago

I don't care about the cost but for many it is an issue.

I think the better approach for both companies would have been to make an external module for backwards compatibility.

They could use something like ePCIE or Thunderbolt to connect to a box with just the processing guts of the console, it would make use of the internal storage, optical drive and video output capabilities of the host machine.

In fact this approach would allow it to also connect to a PC and with the right software it would to turn it into an XBox/PS3.

To be honest if you can use your 360 controller with it would be the best news possible for me. I had to have a custom controller made so I can play do to a motorcycle wreak I was in that left my right (dominate of course) arm flail (or useless). Evil Controllers got with me and helped design something I could use, for example I control the left stick with my right foot, at first it was the right stick, but I switched it so I could aim with my hand, and I have an adapter that lets me use it on my PS3 as well, but If it can be used with the next Xbox it would be a godsend to me.

So if MS hadn't spent $80 billion consolidating the industry just think of all the games and jobs that would have saved.

MS is a drain on gaming and have been nothing but a negative.

MrCrimson0m ago

not exactly like the studios were putting out good games anyway. Industry needs to restart from the ground up; if games like battlebit or manor lords can be made by teams with 10 people - then there's something fundamentally wrong with having 500 man teams put out glitchy overmonetized crap.

Microsoft Closes Redfall Developer Arkane Austin, Hi-Fi Rush Developer Tango Gameworks, and More

Microsoft has closed a number of Bethesda studios, including Redfall maker Arkane Austin, Hi-Fi Rush developer Tango Gameworks, and more in devastating cuts at Bethesda, IGN can confirm.

Moegooner1d ago (Edited 1d ago )

Hi-Fi Rush studio??? Seriously?? Goes to show quality matters lil to MS.

Worst gen ever. All big 3 battling are for who sucks the most. They just keep one upping one another.

-Foxtrot1d ago

This does feel like a “quick Sony is getting shit on for Helldivers, let’s announce it now to minimise impact”

thesoftware7301d ago

That is silly. Let's say there is some weird conspiracy. This announcement would effectively take ALL the attention away from the HD2 situation, especially since there is no longer an HD2 situation. I don't think anything will minimize this impact.

Tacoboto1d ago

... so they announce it on a Tuesday? 36 hours after Sony cleared up everything?

You people care more about the next conspiracy than anything else.

Nevermind that Sony followed the golden rule of minimizing impact by announcing horrible news on a Friday.

Eonjay23h ago

The constant weekly weird Sony drama is part of the industry's problem. Everyone else feels they can get away with murder. Also, what is the point of spending all that money if you just start shutting studios down. And... Redfall wasn't Arkane's fought. Microsoft new the shape the game was in but needed something for GamePass after a whole year of no releases into the service. Them taking it out on Arkane seems really disingenuous and distasteful. And WTF did Tango do? Didn't Todd just release a statement saying how he would never retire. Fire his ass.

romulus2323h ago

Well if that was the reason for the timing it didn't work.

darthv7223h ago

wow... i did not have them closing Tango and Arkane Austin on my bingo card.

Hofstaderman23h ago(Edited 22h ago)

Yes it does. Arkane Austin I can understand but Tango Gameworks made an excellent game in Hi Fi Rush.
On review, it want really all on Austin for Redfall and its failure, they were forced to make a multiplayer games when their expertise was always single player driven first person games.

-Foxtrot22h ago

Guys I’m not being all that serious…relax

Outside_ofthe_Box21h ago(Edited 21h ago)

"I don't think anything will minimize this impact."

It already has. Notice your comment(or lack there of) vs HD2.

On another note, I would like to see Microsoft buy more studios and do more shadows drops on subscription services like they did Hi-Fi Rush. It's great for the industry I was told by people on here.

Zeref20h ago(Edited 20h ago)

peppeaccardo18h ago

MS proving to the world that ttheir leadership cannot drive success from these new acquisitions. Einhander19721d ago (Edited 1d ago )

10/10 deflection, the ol' Sony too deflect...

Let's not discuss the fact that PlayStations struggles have largely been caused by the fact that game pass has reshaped how consumers spend causing them to spend less as they play what is on subscriptions and don't buy games as much because they either have become subscription gamers or they fear the game will come to a subscription so they don't buy things.

And it's not just PlayStation, the whole industry has been effected, many big studios are struggling across the board to match sales targets from pre-game pass releases which is especially apparent in things like sequels.

Heck the best example was Microsoft's own Starfield which should have easily blasted past 10m sales by the end of 2023 going by sales of similar Bethesda games yet was only able to achieve 3m which of course was almost entirely on Steam.

Moegooner1d ago

Or maybe it's because Sony hasn't released multiple worthwhile SP games like they normally do each gen and the ones they did released actually sold well.

Layoffs aren't because studios are struggling, but because major publishers want to maximise profit gains.

Profchaos1d ago (Edited 1d ago )

Absolutely it's a service that's changed the way we view and consume games overall for the worse games have little value when they are part of a sub and become disposable doubly so if they are a day 1 freebie often it's the kiss of death for a game to be day 1 on gamepass as PlayStation players look at it like why do I have to pay 60 dollars for back 4 blood, payday 3 or outriders it'll be on PS plus soon enough and funny enough those games always fail to meet expectations sales are poor and longevity is poor.

When I see a game get a day 1 tag outside of first party my first thought is always something is wrong with it and it can't stand on its own feet so the publisher has made a deal to recoup development cost.

Even first party games have dropped in quality noticeably so since gamepass with gears 5 being the only good release I can think of since gamepass started

Petebloodyonion23h ago

Wasn't aware that Gamepass is available on PlayStation.
Or are you telling us that a service from a console lacking in sales is so great that it affects the morale and buying habits of ppl lacking access to the service?

Also pretty sure that saying all of them competing for who sucks means the whole industry and not just Sony and MS.

Nitrowolf223h ago(Edited 23h ago)

This is what people online want. They just don't know or understand it. So many have warned about consolidation, and exactly what they have fear has been happening

This isn't the end, expect more bought out studios to be closed in the next few years

Hofstaderman22h ago

Spot on. All in the name "growth" to appease investors and shareholders. Can't sustain the lie though...it will always implode as illustrated by these closures. Applies to MS and Embracer.

TiredGamer17h ago(Edited 17h ago)

This. ^

Publishers are slowly mitigating all development risk since every new big/medium budget game has become too big to fail. Games are too expensive to make and the profitability for titles rests on a hair’s edge. When you need to sell 5 million copies of a game to be profitable, you know that we’ve turned a new page in gaming. The real victims here are the smaller studios/games that bring so much character and variety to the industry, like with Hi-Fi Rush.

It looks to me that Hi-Fi Rush did not fulfill financial expectations for moving the GamePass needle, and the sales from the PlayStation port experiment did not measure up either. So it gets the boot.

Sad day and era for gaming.

notachance13h ago

yeah smaller ABK studios like Toys For Bob are now in dangers

notachance23h ago

I just don’t know how the hell a company that can spend $67b to purchase a publisher decided that it’s okay to close the studio that produces their best game last year.

Whoever the higher up there that decides this is completely out of touch of how the game industry works, the damn xbox division as a whole would’ve been closed already if they weren’t sustained by other MS divisions.

shinoff218323h ago

I got in an argument with someone on reddit and they weren't haven't that Xbox isn't propped up by other divisions argument. They swore up and down that Xbox was pulling its own weight. I just stopped after a couple back and forths

TiredGamer17h ago

Didn’t move the GamePass needle and the PlayStation port couldn’t save the return on investment….

dumahim22h ago

So this is what happens when you're pleased with the sales and investing in the studio? Good guy Phil at it again.

Sonic188121h ago(Edited 21h ago)

Lightning7721h ago(Edited 21h ago)

Once again MS creates their own problems and they create their own animosity. Idc about their shitty excuse and "reasons" they're a incompetent company, plus all their Xbox fanboy influencers are dwindling I noticed. How many excuses can you make for a company like MS? Consoles are down and they're losing their own fanboy influencers also. That's all they had to cheer lead them now they're leaving them. Pretty nobody will be on MS dude no matter if they (if they ever but I doubt it) get their act together.

Trashy ass ppl and company....

If they go under eventual it's because of their own doing nobody else's.

porkChop18h ago

Yeah overall this gen is pretty shit. Everyone is making horrible decisions, great devs are getting either gutted or entirely shut down regardless of quality or success, very little in the way of innovative games, etc. This industry needs to see some drastic changes.

badz1498h ago

where are all the cheerleaders for MS acquisitions amid all these?? you guys happy now? this will not be the end of it, maybe just the beginning!

OptimusDK16m ago

Maybe it has to do with this:
Hinji Mikami is leaving Tango Gameworks in the coming months. On February 23 it was reported that Mikami would be departing Tango Gameworks. Bethesda has stepped in to confirm the report of Mikami's forthcoming departure from the studio he founded over a decade ago.

Mikami originally founded Tango Gameworks in 2010 after departing Capcom, having lead the development of iconic games like Resident Evil and Resident Evil 4.

Well xbox fans you got what you asked for... and honestly deserved...

It was so easily predictable that game pass was never going to be able to support all these studios.

If Microsoft can't win they are going to burn it all to the ground...

Countdown to Phil Spencer telling us "it's better for the gamers this way" yet again.

Barlos23h ago

Agree but gamers didn't ask for people to be out of work.

VenomUK22h ago(Edited 22h ago)

@Barlos They indirectly did. Every person who made a wish list of who Microsoft should buy next and were sending tweets to Phil Spencer and Xbox with proposed studios, played a part.

The saddest part is the studios were closed because of the underperformance of their last games, and if they had been given a chance then their next games could’ve been great and succeeded. But it is the same old Phil Spencer Microsoft problem which is not giving them a chance, and that’s why he is not able to manage game studios.

VariantAEC22h ago

Yeah they did. Just because they refused to see what everyone with a brain was telling them doesn't mean they didn't know. They were told, they should've put up a fight and they didn't. This is the result. But who knows even if MS' fans weren't such boot-lickers, MS could've carried this out against their fans wishes anyway. Unfortunately, we have the hardcore MS defense bots running to deflect from any bad news and maybe, just maybe, MS felt empowered to do more damage as a result of their fans cheering this all on.

anast21h ago

They sold themselves out. Once people buy you they can do what they want. None of this should have been a surprise. When companies get bought out, they eventually get dismantled.

shinoff218323h ago

Xbox fans were to busy daydreaming of Ms curbstopping Sony they didn't look at the big picture.

Einhander197222h ago

Not disagreeing at all.

I want to add that from the day Microsoft announced game pass, before they even started buying up studios it was obvious that game pass wasn't going to be able to support itself.

It was so dumb that they doubled down on it by spending 100B on a service they knew only existed through subsidization.

They should have realized there was no way that adding massively more costs on a subscription they were subsidizing was certain to fail. Especially after seeing how it had devastated sales across the platform as a whole.

Heck by the time this generation started during covid when the console sales were similar PlayStation was already outselling xbox on multiplatform games 8:1 yet they still doubled down on it.

22h ago
Relientk771d ago

This is beyond wrong. Like wtf!? Especially Tango Gameworks with Hi-Fi Rush. I've heard nothing but good things about that game. Just because Arkane Austin screwed up one game release doesn't mean you need to close them. It sounds like they were forced to do a multiplayer game when they're a single player studio. They could have made a Prey 2 or some other game next.

Just wow awful news.

Einhander19721d ago

Apparently PlayStation owners didn't buy enough copies of Hi-Fi Rush...

romulus2323h ago

"Xbox says Hi-Fi Rush was a success "in all key measurements" amid rumors of poor sales. Following rumors that Tango Gameworks' Hi-Fish Rush didn't meet sales expectations, Xbox marketing VP Aaron Greenburg is defending the "break out hit" as a success by all metrics."

According to Aaron Greenburg it was a success so they shouldn't have even needed PlayStation owners to buy it. That being said, I bought it and really enjoyed it, it's a great game. Shame MS closed them down.

RpgSama23h ago

@Romulus23

All lies by the Green Bug, that just means that a lot of people fired bullets or whatever in the game, that's the key measurements they care to share.

Tango did NOT deserve to be closed down, they have not released a single bad game.

Crows9023h ago

That's usually what happens when you don't release it at the same time as other platforms....same thing happened with tomb raider reboot sequel. MS got exclusivity for a year and then when it came to PlayStation it barely sold. Nobody cared anymore.

shinoff218323h ago

Still waiting on the physical release pre order window

VariantAEC22h ago

Well... I did my part. Hi-Fi Rush is a good game, but I don't think its MS' style. We don't really know how well it did or didn't perform by the numbers or whether it broke even. This could just be another MS blunder.

Elda20h ago

Exactly. MS purchasing a 3rd party studio & keeping games off of other platforms probably hurt them in the long run, then finally putting Hi Fi Rush on PS which in turn PS fans probably didn't care to buy & support Hi Fi Rush after a year later of release. Hi Fi Rush was released on Gamepass so it probably never really made any money selling solely.

Eonjay20h ago

@romulus23

Let's hope it didn't sell well because that would make this worse. Also I could have sworn I read an article about their next game in the works.

Seraphim18h ago(Edited 18h ago)

I was wondering if that played any part considering the timing, though, XB claimed the game to be a success last year only on XB & PC. Regardless MS f'd up there too. They shadow dropped HiFi on XB/PC last year at the perfect time. This year when they released on PS not only had the hype died, but there were so many solid games available the first 3 months of this year to play.

I almost bought it on PC last year, but now that it dropped on PS I just have far too many games to play to bother...

If MS needs PS and even Switch sales they need a better strategy. At the very least a release date where players are more inticed to buy said game. The problem is always going to be that if they want exclusives the hype for these games will be dead a year later. The exceptions might be some of their heavy hitters.... 2 cents

Angyobangyo4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

PS and PC owners probably bought more copies that Xbox owners.

I can only imagine the little amount of revenue both games generated, sent straight to gamepass and excluded from the largest current gen console userbase. Not to say both games would have done well if they were on PS5 too, but you heavily damage to a games revenue when you put it on a stagnating sub service for a poorly selling console, can't really see people going out in droves to sub to GP to play this.

shinoff218323h ago

Gamepass subs(most of Xbox players) don't buy games all like that so it's not sustainable. It's reality.

RaidenBlack1d ago

Yea Austin made one of the most creative game of last gen with Prey and were forced to take risk with Redfall and now the whole studio is being closed.

Aphrodia23h ago

Yes, that Tango gameworks/ Hi-Fi closure was an eye opener for me as well. Neither played it nor was interested in it myself but all I heard was everyone acting like it was the second coming of guitar hero or something.

I don't know what else to say other than modern gaming is an overwhelming sea of mediocrity and there's not enough voices of reason speaking up and saying that most games made these days are just not very good.

shinoff218323h ago

Your playing the wrong games then. There's always been shovelware type games. Going back to wii, snes, nes, ps1 Xbox og. That's a bs blanket statement. As an older gamer since atari days I'd personally say this is a great time. If you can't find anything to play. That's on you

With all that said in no way or form am I speaking of multi-player games, gacha, or whatever. I'm strictly speaking on single player games.

Aphrodia20h ago

you are hilarious. trying to validate your comment by excluding over half of the games out there today. Pathetic man.

Neonridr22h ago

I'm more devastated at the loss of The Evil Within.

Chevalier11h ago

Wait I was told Xbox had great engagement numbers?! Some Xbox fans said they bought games when I told them Xbox customers don't buy games?

So Xbox bought studios to keep games off other platforms and forgot they conditioned Xbox customers to not buy games. Whoops.

So anyone else think Outer World's 2 dies 🤔? I'm thinking a small game losing out on Nintendo and Playstation gamers buying will kill this IP. But it's okay Xbox fans can get more COD! Halo, Gears and Forza! Woot that's a 'win'. Yay Gamepass FTW

Can't wait to see the usual try spin and play this down. So much for the heroic MS and Phil saving these studios eh.

Eonjay1d ago

By the end of the day IGN will be talking about how this is right for the industry. Don't worry, Microsoft's PR is making the call now.

RpgSama23h ago

Tango did NOT deserve to be closed down, they have not released a single bad game, and I'm sure Arkhane failed just because they were both rushed and pressured into making a GaaS game they had no experience in doing and no support to get it completed out of the gate.

PrinceOfAnger1d ago

Not a big deal only hi fi rush was good

Sony has closed
Manchester studio
Japan studio
Pixel opus
London studio
Ready At Dawn ...

RupeeHoarder23h ago

The difference being Sony has a large group of other studios that have done something positive. Microsoft just closed the studio to the only good game they released in the past year (Hi-Fi Rush).

CrashMania23h ago

They all suck as well of course. But MS spent 10s of billions on these publishers for mass consolidation, every made a song and dance about how MS would save them, using their endless Windows, 365 and Azure money to keep them open forever and how Phil was some hero.

Nothing is safe unless it makes money, even for MS.

romulus2323h ago

It is a big deal.

Microsoft has closed
Fasa Studios
Digital Anvil
Ensemble
Lionhead Studios
Press Play
Arkane Austin
Tango Gameworks

Einhander197223h ago(Edited 23h ago)

Wow how far back do you want to go back.

Lionhead Studios
Aces Game Studio
BigPark
Carbonated Game
Digital Anvil
Ensemble Studios
FASA Studio
Good Science Studio
Hired Gun
Microsoft Studios Japan
Microsoft Studios Victoria
Team Dakota
Xbox Entertainment Studios
Xbox Live Productions
Lift London
Access Software
Salt Lake Games Studio
Twisted Pixel Games
WingNut Interactive

And more before this, this was just their cuts during xbone era that Phil cut while he was at the head.

And some of those PlayStation studios were merged not closed, most of the UK studios were folded into each other.

Japan Studio was renamed to Asobi not closed, aAsobi was an internal team of Japan Studio the "closure" the press misinformed people about was more or less a name change, the studio is in the same building and when the change happened less than 5 people mostly leadership positions chose to leave the studio to form Bokeh Studio, which still works closely with Sony.

And even if your deflection stood on it's own, Microsoft spent 3 Billion 3 years ago almost to the date to buy Zenimax and has already closed 2 of it's biggest studios and decimated Zenimax's support studio structure.

It's no wonder Todd Howard was talking about "more frequent releases" and letting other studios make their IP's games. The days of big budget huge Bethesda games is over...

In fact sadly Microsoft has ushered in the end of big budget gaming as we know it with their obviously unsustainable subscription industry change.

And I feel fully confident that this isn't the end of studio closures from these recently purchased studios.

Abnor_Mal23h ago

Ready At Dawn was never a Sony owned studio, and only made a few smaller God of War games and a Jax and Daxter spin off, and of course The Order1866.

They are currently owned by OcUlus Studios.

MrDead23h ago

How many times has MS fired Bethesda staff since they purchased it? I think it's been three rounds so far

BehindTheRows23h ago

Deflection is the finest form of delusion.

shinoff218322h ago

London studio what have they made recently. Really the worst one was Japan studio. That sucked.

In reality though your deflecting. The fact of the matter is Ms just closed the studio that made their highest rated game in years. That's insane.

Hofstaderman22h ago

Also many of those staff were absorbed into other studios.

VariantAEC21h ago(Edited 21h ago)

Ready At Dawn was never a PS first party studio.
Manchester was closed and it was proposed that London should be closed, but their website is still up with no news about it being closed on their official site anywhere. So it's possible that the proposed closure just did not happen to get fufilled. Meaning London Studio *MIGHT* still be open running lean.

Edit: Japan Studio was closed with some staff making up the new Asobi Team Studio who's first title was the PS5 pack-in game "Astro's Playroom." Pixel Opus was closed and not replaced or spun-off their only games were Entwined and Concrete Genie they also helped publish Journey according to Wikipedia.

Chevalier11h ago

Man you got crap info

Sony never owned Ready at Dawn. It's now owned by Oculus.

Phil needs to step down. What kind of usual spin do you want?

More and more people lose jobs but the people at the top stay the same. Hardware sales tank despite billions and billions spent. The math is plain and simple.

Sonic188122h ago(Edited 22h ago)

I'm still trying to figure out what was the real reason to acquire Bethesda for millions or Billions of dollars if you're closing down studios 🤔 What were their true intentions 🤔 I mean do Microsoft really want to be a third-party publisher? It sounds like they're confused.with their future in gaming

VariantAEC21h ago

@Sonic1881
To rape each studio for their sweet succulent ultra-valuable IP. This is Microsoft's favorite past-time.

Microsoft Survey Asks About Handheld

A new survey from Microsoft has further hinted at the possibility of an Xbox handheld being in development.

This is definitely happening, I just hope they have 2 versions one with a much bigger screen.

GamerRN7d ago

I'll be happy with this, and a PC console hybrid that rivals anything we have power wise

Number1TailzFan7d ago

The problem with bigger devices is playing them on your side in bed, Vita and before that was fine. Since the Switch you gotta have a gooseneck holder & controllers detached so you can lie down holding them, or your arm will quickly get tired.

1Victor6d ago

@thesofware: “A much bigger screen than what?”
A gaming laptop 🤷🏿🤣

Kosic6d ago

Than the screen originally planned...duh... :D

darthv726d ago

it kinda already did... https://www.xbox.com/en-US/...

They are just gauging interest in one of their own.

crazyCoconuts6d ago

A Xbox version of Logitech G-Cloud?
I mean, why bother? Not like the G cloud is flying off shelves and what would Xbox add to make it better?
They're surely not going to create bespoke architecture here and there are already a few Windows handhelds out there. I have little confidence in their ability to put together an attractive UI in the way Steam did. So I doubt anything will come from this.

KicksnSnares8d ago

Day One buy for me if they'll make a dedicated handheld device.

darthv727d ago

i have that logitech g-cloud. Its a sweet little piece of kit. I like that it can also install games from the play store unlike the other android based handheld.

mudakoshaka7d ago

It sure is! Don't understand why you get the down-votes. Whoever does not like the G Cloud must have been dropped down a well, head first, when they were of a younger age.

PassNextquestion7d ago

I wonder if Microsoft will perform better in Japan if they do actually make a handheld since everyone says handheld and mobile are king over there.

TiredGamer7d ago

This looks like the future of the game industry... all three platforms with a handheld option.

I wonder if the Playstation Portal is a technology test-bed/prototype for a future Playstation handheld?

rlow17d ago (Edited 7d ago )

It’s a possibility but I can’t help but think would that be the best way to go about it? Though it would give you data on how much it is used and game type. It’s still not a true portable device and so people approach it differently. I think that data on phones, tablets, and of course the competition would give a better indication.

But I really think if Sony is considering a new PSP that could play ps5 games, now would be the time to dive in. Honestly, if they do this, it would be huge.

Traecy7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

Doubt if Sony PS wants to support a new handheld with first party games. Something they lacked with the Vita. What they should do is have a handheld that is like the PS Portal which can play all games but play those games on the go as well as at home. Something like that is a better investment.

TiredGamer7d ago

Agreed that you will probably never see a separate line of games specifically for the handheld (a la PSP or PSVita). The modern economics and expectations of game development make that cost prohibitive. What makes more sense is if the full-fat game on PS5 or PS6 has a special "handheld" profile that is automatically optimized for the lower spec handheld. There would be some significant compromises compared to the bigger console variant, but it would be the same game overall and would only require a single purchase.... somewhat what the Switch does with a lower resolution when playing handheld versus docked.
