Earlier this week, former Castlevania producer Koji Igarashi left Konami to start his own development studio. In a statement, Igarashi told IGN, "I've decided to break out on my own to have the freedom to make the kind of games I really want to make -- the same kind I think fans of my past games want as well."
IGN caught up with Igarashi and we asked, given his experience with making 2D action games, would he consider working with Nintendo to revive the Metroid series?
Other nominees include games like SimCity & Tony Hawk's Pro Skater.
There are some good nominees in this list that are deserving to be inducted also, but I feel Metroid has had the most impact on the industry out of all of these. Look how Metroid influenced the evolution of the Castlevania games, and the "Metroidvania" subgenre of games have become a prevailing force in gaming today. Especially now, Metroidvanias are bigger than ever.
I can very much see Resident Evil being added later too, bc it really did popularize and define the survival horror genre. I would say that one is next in line.
If any Metroid game should get the honor it should be Super Metroid , it's perfection in my eyes . 30 years later and I still feel it's the most epic shit ever .
The GBA remake deserves it or Super Metroid, the original was a very sloppy and rushed game programmed in 3 months and it shows.
If you've never played the remake, it's absolutely a must play, fixes basically every flaw in the game. Check out ExoParadigmGamer's comparison video.
Hironobu Sakaguchi and Koji Igarashi discuss how the Japanese gaming scene turned sour, and how it's since revived.
NES to PS2 was really the golden age for Japanese games. Once the 360 and PS3 came around western developers surpassed what the Japanese were doing.
I really don’t understand how in a single generation almost all Japanese developers couldn’t make anything as stand out as they did in the PS1 and PS2 eras.
Super Mario Maker has been a great series for Nintendo, but it is time to move on. How about a Metroid Maker? That would be interesting! Check out Jason Capo’s thoughts for more.
I'd go either for Metroid Maker a Zelda Maker would also be great even a Mario Kart Maker as well.
Oh please Nintendo hire this guy now!
Nintendo should scoop this guy up. Tons of experience, and nintendo needs more small devs. Would be cool if they kicked off a new metroid trilogy like they did prime, have a handheld game on the side like fusion.
Gimme a "HELL"
Gimme a "YEAH"
This guy is literally saying "Hire me, Nintendo!". Come on, Iwata, don't let this chance slip. The guy knows of metroidvanias (as he's helped define the genre, lol). This is a golden opportunity.
Doing a 2D is fine.
I would rather Bungie-
-who has expressed a love for the franchise at a passed E3 (&love for Nintendo see walk-thru of their studios and they have Nintendo Swag Everywhere)-
-do a FPS Centered 3D Metroid.
