another excuse to bring up the lack of BC on the ps3, get over it!

alphakennybody5034d ago

I do own a ps3 and also a working launch slim ps2 and I'm sure many other still have one(ps2) that works. So PS3 lacking in BC isn't that much of a big deal at all.

thorstein5034d ago

And I can play my PS2 games on it. Everyone had the chance to get one.

GWAVE5034d ago

I guess people continue to forget that the 360 is only compatible with a handful of Xbox games.

darthv725034d ago

http://www.xbox.com/en-US/g...

Yeah..that sure is a "handful" alright...

Saddly though, the one I have that I can't play is MGS2 substance. Every other xbox game I have plays perfectly fine.

And...what's funny is this list isnt limited to any specific model of 360. ALL units are capable of playing these games.

Anon19745034d ago (Edited 5033d ago )

My PS3 plays old PS2 games just fine, but I prefer to play PS3 games on it. If I wanted to play PS2 games I would have kept my PS2 - or bought a PS3 console that could play PS2 games. Oh wait, that's right. I did. Just like millions of others did.
Now if you want to play PS2 games you have to go on ebay and buy a PS2 for $50. Oh noooo! Or buy a PS2, which they're still selling.

Aren't these guys sick of bitching about BC yet? It's been, like, 3 years now.

mastiffchild5033d ago

People complained about the PS3 being too expensive and Sony took out the features they could based on what they cost AND what people actually used to reduce costs. guess what? Even those of us WITH BC PS3s didn't use it very much. That's why i often feel the clamour for BC to return is mainly coming from people with zero intentions of ever buying a PS3.

Recently our camping PS2 died(festival accident)so I needed to replace it. It cost me £20 to get a decent used one with a ton of games included. Seriously, the lack of BC is not an issue for anyone who can buy a PS3 in the first place and in the past year I've played precisely two hours of PS2 games on my 60gig PS3. Since Persona4 there's been precious little released that you'd want anyway and certainly NOT above actual PS3 games.

Another point is that it WILL return and in a massive way when Sony release the next PSP. It playing the entire back catalogue of the greatest console ever(imho-as far as a library of varied, quality gaming is concerned at least)will be Sony's best crack at the handheld market EVER and they aren't daft enough to pass up putting all the games on the PSN. Fact remains, though, that portable gaming is where you'll WANT to pay PS2 games when current gen titles are what you really want your PS3 for, no?

You want to play PS2 games? then you can and for WAY,WAY less than buying a PS3. Failing that or if you live in such a tiny place that you cannot fit two consoles in your home buy a launch PS3. There are choices but the question does NOT need answering at all-not these days anyway.

HolyOrangeCows5033d ago (Edited 5033d ago )

Hardware BC is expensive and software BC is inefficient.

Buy a Ps2 and Xbox original. They're cheap, and guess what?! They have ONE HUNDRED PERFECT Ps2/xbox "BC"! Yeaaaa!

animelover104875033d ago

people need to stop bitching about ps2 backwards compatibility you had a chance to get one, and you can still buy a ps2 easily so please stop fucking whining >:(

rockleex5033d ago

The people who complain about BC are the ones who said BC didn't matter and Sony should just take it out to lower the price of the PS3.

I was a defender of BC because its an important feature to me. I supported that feature by buying a PS3 when it still had that feature.

The people who attacked BC are now the ones complaining about how stupid Sony is to take it out in the first place.

Kleptic5033d ago

I bought a 60gb in 2007 that popped, and loved the BC back then...but can admit I don't use it nearly as much as I used to...and that 60gb ylod'd, but I was able to get another 60gb in its place from Sony...

I like having it, even though I rarely use it...and to me it really is shitty that Sony removed it...Anyone saying 'go buy a PS2' is dead wrong imo...as the BC PS3's were WAY better than PS2 with wired controllers...You had nearly unlimited save slots as you could 'create' memory cards on the HDD and swap them in and out of the 'slots' from the OS during gameplay...not to mention a DS3 being far superior to any wireless controller ever offered for the PS2...don't really recall how well the upscaling or 'smoothing' worked for PS2 games on the BC PS3's...but to me the PS3 playing PS2 games was much more convenient that having another console under my TV...

If it wasn't there from the beginning I probably never would have cared...but it does suck they removed it...

rumplstilts5034d ago

Fat PS3 was 600$

For most that is not an option.

Backwards compatibility is standard now.360 has it. Wii has it. Why can't PS3 owners have it too? Why are you guys trying to defend them removing features that have become industry standard? Besides, it is annoying having to unplug and plug in everything to switch between consoles.

gamerzBEreal175033d ago

dude right now 360 will cost u $350 and down the line (5 more years end of this gen) $600 and ps3 has ps1 backwords compatibility and xbox360 only has some games backwords compatibile and not all 360s can even play those few games lol u fail

mrv3215033d ago

Don't you need a hard drive for BC on 360? SO it's not a standard, plus it doesn't work with all games.

The PS3 has a universal hard drives and plays all PSone games ( correct me if I'm wrong )

TheTeam065033d ago

The Wii can play my N64 cartridges?

PS: A 60GB PS3 is $350 at this point. 20GB and 80GB models are even cheaper.

Amplitude5033d ago (Edited 5033d ago )

I guess people like paying 600 dollars [i did, btw] for their game consoles, and i guess they like features being removed, and also like having to unplug systems just to play PS2. I guess they also disagree about the wii and 360 having backwards compatibility too.

Honestly though, it's frustrating beyond belief to see that you have disagrees... I hate the fact that theres no backward compatibilities in the new PS3 models, cause, if my 60GB model ever breaks, then im screwed.
-.-

How could somebody possibly click disagree? GggggaaaAAawWWddDDdddd people are stupid. >.<

Redempteur5033d ago

#1 should have been MS rushing the 360 out to the market with its hardware problems

ico925033d ago

why dont people just get over it the number 1 reason why the ps3 doesn't have BC is the fact that the PS2 is still out and selling

ger1015033d ago

I find it very weird that people are saying the PS2 is still being sold.

There's three game shops where I live and not one of them sell a PS2, not even a used one. Having said that, they do sell pre-owned PS2 games and they're dirt cheap too.

MRMagoo1235033d ago

every shop i have been to that sells consoles still has brand new ps2s for sale Kmart EBgames Game JBHIFI Tandys Toyrus target every single one there not hard to find and are cheap as anything it would cost you less to buy a new ps2 and a ps3 slim than it would to get a 60gig BC ps3 so who cares about BC i dont use it on mine anyway i have 2 ps2s for that.

ger1015033d ago

What's with the 8 disagrees? Is it really that surprising that there are three shops that don't sell PS2s? Hell, when my PS2 broke a few months back I had to buy a new one on Ebay because the shops where I live hadn't got them.

The Sony fanboys on this site need to calm the hell down.

@MRMagoo123: Different countries/companies have different suppliers, maybe? You're lucky if you can just walk into a Toys'R'Us and pick up a PS2. Saves you having to go and buy one online and wait a month for it to arrive.

HolyOrangeCows5033d ago

A lot of these aren't really "what were they thinking?" moments.
Like Nintendo 64 using cartridges, Game Boy Advance no backlight, No Gameboy Advance in Nintendo DSI, and Playstation 3 will not play Playstation 2 games.
Some of those are a tad disappointing, but not "ZOMG WTF WERE THEY THINKING"

Persistantthug5033d ago (Edited 5033d ago )

How can releasing a console that's broken on at least 50% of every owner who's bought one since 2005 NOT top the list?

There can be NO bigger "no no" blunder than that....Not ever.

N4PS3Fanboys5033d ago (Edited 5033d ago )

The writer explained that in the comments section on his article:

"A) it wasn’t a choice, Microsoft did not CHOOSE to put the RROD in there, it happened, everything else on the list wasn’t due to failure of the console but due to choices made by the companies."

Persistantthug5033d ago

Microsoft put that console out KNOWING it was defective prone.

They knew, but they didn't care, because getting to the market first was the priority for them.

Microsoft knowingly put broken consoles out on the market ON PURPOSE, rather, for a purpose, N4PS3Fanboys.

n4gno5033d ago (Edited 5033d ago )

Just another stupid excuse for xbox fans (without ps3 most of the time) to complain about things they don't care :)

nobody cares about ps2 games now, even if you play 24H/24H, you don't have time to play all the great ps3 games (and online is endless), nobody wants to play old games on a flat screen tv, even if the games are good (this is the reason why gamers want some remake hd of the best games)

"maybe the guy is stuck in 2007 "

maybe it's just another ridiculous blog (paid by ms or just created by fanboyz) ?

"If the ps3 avoided blu-ray and cell processor at launch and instead just made it backwards compatible I'd wager that it could have sold at least 20m more consoles than what it has already"

Lol, you are so wrong.
DO you really think it was better for gamers to not have the best games/graphics, and bluray, just to sell more (the first year only, because now, it makes the difference and success + bluray "trojan" for movies industry was a great idea, who 'll gives billions to sony for several years)

gamerzBEreal175033d ago (Edited 5033d ago )

Xbox Live times 6 years + $299 for the console + $99 wifi + $30 charger 54% failure rate $730...

'nuff said.

EDIT
how can u dissagree with prices? lol

kneon5033d ago

The XBox launched at $399 in the US so you can add another $100

KingZFlipper5033d ago

$299 for the console +($99 wifi) if you are that stupid to buy to your slim a wifi connector + ($30 charger) or you just can buy for 5-10$ some rechargeable batteries.

kneon5033d ago

It would also be stupid to pay $600 for a PS3 now, but he was talking about launch. At launch if you wanted wifi on the XBox you had to buy an adapter. But I think he has one too many years of Live, shouldn't it only be 5 so far?

DeFFeR5033d ago (Edited 5033d ago )

Live launched in 2002 - but the 360 has only been out 4.5 years now (which makes 5 payments for LIVE) so you are correct..

table5033d ago (Edited 5033d ago )

Sony made so many mistakes with the ps3 it's not even funny. Thankfully they are actually turning a profit now because I think it would be a terribly sad day for gaming if Sony left the industry.

@gamerzBEreal

the difference is microsoft gave you the option and that is a more economically friendly way for the company. Microsoft seriously out-foxed sony this gen. Sony had the right idea for profit with the ps2 selling memory cards at ridiculous amounts when the xbox had built in memory.

Imperator5033d ago

If Sony leaves the gaming arena I think I'd probably stop console gaming. Move solely to PC. That's just my opinion though. Sony seems to be the only that caters to all crowds and mainly focuses on the core.

Godmars2905033d ago (Edited 5033d ago )

How does someone make a list like that, yet not bring up the issues with Immersion at the time in the case of rumble on the PS3?

Granted it was Sony's fault for not settling like MS and Nintendo, who also stole the tech, but the writer makes it sounds like it was a deliberate choice that was never corrected.

Microsoft Closes Redfall Developer Arkane Austin, Hi-Fi Rush Developer Tango Gameworks, and More

Microsoft has closed a number of Bethesda studios, including Redfall maker Arkane Austin, Hi-Fi Rush developer Tango Gameworks, and more in devastating cuts at Bethesda, IGN can confirm.

Moegooner1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Hi-Fi Rush studio??? Seriously?? Goes to show quality matters lil to MS.

Worst gen ever. All big 3 battling are for who sucks the most. They just keep one upping one another.

-Foxtrot1h ago

This does feel like a “quick Sony is getting shit on for Helldivers, let’s announce it now to minimise impact”

thesoftware7301h ago

That is silly. Let's say there is some weird conspiracy. This announcement would effectively take ALL the attention away from the HD2 situation, especially since there is no longer an HD2 situation. I don't think anything will minimize this impact.

Tacoboto54m ago

... so they announce it on a Tuesday? 36 hours after Sony cleared up everything?

You people care more about the next conspiracy than anything else.

Nevermind that Sony followed the golden rule of minimizing impact by announcing horrible news on a Friday.

Eonjay54m ago

The constant weekly weird Sony drama is part of the industry's problem. Everyone else feels they can get away with murder. Also, what is the point of spending all that money if you just start shutting studios down. And... Redfall wasn't Arkane's fought. Microsoft new the shape the game was in but needed something for GamePass after a whole year of no releases into the service. Them taking it out on Arkane seems really disingenuous and distasteful. And WTF did Tango do? Didn't Todd just release a statement saying how he would never retire. Fire his ass.

romulus2349m ago

Well if that was the reason for the timing it didn't work.

darthv7213m ago

Einhander19721h ago(Edited 1h ago)

10/10 deflection, the ol' Sony too deflect...

Let's not discuss the fact that PlayStations struggles have largely been caused by the fact that game pass has reshaped how consumers spend causing them to spend less as they play what is on subscriptions and don't buy games as much because they either have become subscription gamers or they fear the game will come to a subscription so they don't buy things.

And it's not just PlayStation, the whole industry has been effected, many big studios are struggling across the board to match sales targets from pre-game pass releases which is especially apparent in things like sequels.

Heck the best example was Microsoft's own Starfield which should have easily blasted past 10m sales by the end of 2023 going by sales of similar Bethesda games yet was only able to achieve 3m which of course was almost entirely on Steam.

Moegooner59m ago

Or maybe it's because Sony hasn't released multiple worthwhile SP games like they normally do each gen and the ones they did released actually sold well.

Layoffs aren't because studios are struggling, but because major publishers want to maximise profit gains.

Profchaos57m ago(Edited 54m ago)

Absolutely it's a service that's changed the way we view and consume games overall for the worse games have little value when they are part of a sub and become disposable doubly so if they are a day 1 freebie often it's the kiss of death for a game to be day 1 on gamepass as PlayStation players look at it like why do I have to pay 60 dollars for back 4 blood, payday 3 or outriders it'll be on PS plus soon enough and funny enough those games always fail to meet expectations sales are poor and longevity is poor.

When I see a game get a day 1 tag outside of first party my first thought is always something is wrong with it and it can't stand on its own feet so the publisher has made a deal to recoup development cost.

Even first party games have dropped in quality noticeably so since gamepass with gears 5 being the only good release I can think of since gamepass started

Petebloodyonion0m ago

Wasn't aware that Gamepass is available on PlayStation.
Or are you telling us that a service from a console lacking in sales is so great that it affects the morale and buying habits of ppl lacking access to the service?

Also pretty sure that saying all of them competing for who sucks means the whole industry and not just Sony and MS.

Nitrowolf245m ago(Edited 45m ago)

This is what people online want. They just don't know or understand it. So many have warned about consolidation, and exactly what they have fear has been happening

This isn't the end, expect more bought out studios to be closed in the next few years

notachance5m ago

I just don’t know how the hell a company that can spend $67b to purchase a publisher decided that it’s okay to close the studio that produces their best game last year.

Whoever the higher up there that decides this is completely out of touch of how the game industry works, the damn xbox division as a whole would’ve been closed already if they weren’t sustained by other MS divisions.

shinoff21832m ago

I got in an argument with someone on reddit and they weren't haven't that Xbox isn't propped up by other divisions argument. They swore up and down that Xbox was pulling its own weight. I just stopped after a couple back and forths

Tango Gameworks and Arkane?

RaidenBlack1h ago

Arkane Austin (Prey developer)
Not Arkane Lyon ( Dishonored developer)

Crows9019m ago

Prey was fantastic. Red fall was shit because they were forced to do shit they didn't want to make.

Atkane Lyon did death loop I believe....I hated that one.

shinoff21831m ago

I personally liked prey more.

MrDead21m ago

Will be more soon, I've said it before I can't see MS keeping Bethesda. I think they'll strip it's IPs and slowly close everything, it's what they do.

Einhander19721h ago(Edited 1h ago)

Well xbox fans you got what you asked for... and honestly deserved...

It was so easily predictable that game pass was never going to be able to support all these studios.

If Microsoft can't win they are going to burn it all to the ground...

Countdown to Phil Spencer telling us "it's better for the gamers this way" yet again.

Barlos3m ago

Agree but gamers didn't ask for people to be out of work.

shinoff21830m ago

Xbox fans were to busy daydreaming of Ms curbstopping Sony they didn't look at the big picture.

Relientk771h ago

This is beyond wrong. Like wtf!? Especially Tango Gameworks with Hi-Fi Rush. I've heard nothing but good things about that game. Just because Arkane Austin screwed up one game release doesn't mean you need to close them. It sounds like they were forced to do a multiplayer game when they're a single player studio. They could have made a Prey 2 or some other game next.

Just wow awful news.

Einhander19721h ago

Apparently PlayStation owners didn't buy enough copies of Hi-Fi Rush...

romulus2344m ago

"Xbox says Hi-Fi Rush was a success "in all key measurements" amid rumors of poor sales. Following rumors that Tango Gameworks' Hi-Fish Rush didn't meet sales expectations, Xbox marketing VP Aaron Greenburg is defending the "break out hit" as a success by all metrics."

According to Aaron Greenburg it was a success so they shouldn't have even needed PlayStation owners to buy it. That being said, I bought it and really enjoyed it, it's a great game. Shame MS closed them down.

RpgSama32m ago

@Romulus23

All lies by the Green Bug, that just means that a lot of people fired bullets or whatever in the game, that's the key measurements they care to share.

Tango did NOT deserve to be closed down, they have not released a single bad game.

Crows9018m ago

That's usually what happens when you don't release it at the same time as other platforms....same thing happened with tomb raider reboot sequel. MS got exclusivity for a year and then when it came to PlayStation it barely sold. Nobody cared anymore.

CrashMania1h ago

I can only imagine the little amount of revenue both games generated, sent straight to gamepass and excluded from the largest current gen console userbase. Not to say both games would have done well if they were on PS5 too, but you heavily damage to a games revenue when you put it on a stagnating sub service for a poorly selling console, can't really see people going out in droves to sub to GP to play this.

RaidenBlack58m ago

Yea Austin made one of the most creative game of last gen with Prey and were forced to take risk with Redfall and now the whole studio is being closed.

Aphrodia35m ago

Yes, that Tango gameworks/ Hi-Fi closure was an eye opener for me as well. Neither played it nor was interested in it myself but all I heard was everyone acting like it was the second coming of guitar hero or something.

I don't know what else to say other than modern gaming is an overwhelming sea of mediocrity and there's not enough voices of reason speaking up and saying that most games made these days are just not very good.

Eonjay1h ago

By the end of the day IGN will be talking about how this is right for the industry. Don't worry, Microsoft's PR is making the call now.

RpgSama27m ago

Tango did NOT deserve to be closed down, they have not released a single bad game, and I'm sure Arkhane failed just because they were both rushed and pressured into making a GaaS game they had no experience in doing and no support to get it completed out of the gate.

PrinceOfAnger55m ago

Not a big deal only hi fi rush was good

Sony has closed
Manchester studio
Japan studio
Pixel opus
London studio
Ready At Dawn ...

RupeeHoarder51m ago

The difference being Sony has a large group of other studios that have done something positive. Microsoft just closed the studio to the only good game they released in the past year (Hi-Fi Rush).

CrashMania41m ago

They all suck as well of course. But MS spent 10s of billions on these publishers for mass consolidation, every made a song and dance about how MS would save them, using their endless Windows, 365 and Azure money to keep them open forever and how Phil was some hero.

Nothing is safe unless it makes money, even for MS.

romulus2337m ago

It is a big deal.

Microsoft has closed
Fasa Studios
Digital Anvil
Ensemble
Lionhead Studios
Press Play
Arkane Austin
Tango Gameworks

Einhander197231m ago(Edited 23m ago)

Wow how far back do you want to go back.

Lionhead Studios
Aces Game Studio
BigPark
Carbonated Game
Digital Anvil
Ensemble Studios
FASA Studio
Good Science Studio
Hired Gun
Microsoft Studios Japan
Microsoft Studios Victoria
Team Dakota
Xbox Entertainment Studios
Xbox Live Productions
Lift London
Access Software
Salt Lake Games Studio
Twisted Pixel Games
WingNut Interactive

And more before this, this was just their cuts during xbone era that Phil cut while he was at the head.

And some of those PlayStation studios were merged not closed, most of the UK studios were folded into each other.

Japan Studio was renamed to Asobi not closed, aAsobi was an internal team of Japan Studio the "closure" the press misinformed people about was more or less a name change, the studio is in the same building and when the change happened less than 5 people mostly leadership positions chose to leave the studio to form Bokeh Studio, which still works closely with Sony.

And even if your deflection stood on it's own, Microsoft spent 3 Billion 3 years ago almost to the date to buy Zenimax and has already closed 2 of it's biggest studios and decimated Zenimax's support studio structure.

It's no wonder Todd Howard was talking about "more frequent releases" and letting other studios make their IP's games. The days of big budget huge Bethesda games is over...

In fact sadly Microsoft has ushered in the end of big budget gaming as we know it with their obviously unsustainable subscription industry change.

And I feel fully confident that this isn't the end of studio closures from these recently purchased studios.

Abnor_Mal26m ago

Ready At Dawn was never a Sony owned studio, and only made a few smaller God of War games and a Jax and Daxter spin off, and of course The Order1866.

How Many More Victims, Like Garry's Mod, Will Nintendo's Hurtful Crusade Create?

Hanzala from eXputer: "As Nintendo takes out 20 years' worth of stuff from Garry's Mod, I watch in shock, thinking why it continues to hurt and discourage its fans."

RiseNShine3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

The irony that some of the most disgusting business practices come from companies like Disney or Nintendo, i can't even begin to understand what terrible damage was Garrys Mod making to Nintendo bottom line, imho they're getting pretty nervous about where they're heading in the future, handhelds are no longer something exclusive to Nintendo, from Steam Deck to many others, now you can play the latest games and pay a fraction of the price on Steam sales, so it's up to their exclusives, which just on their own would make hard to justify purchasing a closed overpriced hardware with outrageous price policies (Super Mario Odyssey is still 60 euro 6 years later!), and as a home console they're always underperforming compared to Sony or Xbox.

gold_drake2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

i cam guarantee you, that their exclusives alone is what drives switch sales. they sell in the 10s of millions of copies.

nintendo created their franchises to be sort of nostalgia driven, exclusive only on nintendo.

people will always buy the pkmn games as they always bring in new younger fans amd is family friendly

mario kart, the same thing, mario games in general.

zelda games are system sellers. animal crossing for the casual gamers.

nintendo doesnt need third vame devs essentially. they made sure with the switch and the limitations that they looked more to pc ps and xbox.

its sad, but nintendo is more than fine with what they're doing. they positioned themselves to appeal to the more casual gamers.

but to your point, im not sure why they're doing this rly.

Inverno2d ago

Look at how they handled Nintendo games being streamed or uploaded on YouTube in the past. They killed Yuzu and Citra even when they had nothing to do with ToTK being leaked, not to mention it was basically unplayable on emulation the week it was leaked. Smash Bros tournament, that was fairly recent. They shut down their online services without any care for purchases made. I bought a switch after skipping their last 2 consoles and handhelds but I don't plan on buying anything Nintendo in the future. They take things to the extremes, they legitimately hate their fans. They're honestly right up there with the likes of Acti, EA, and Ubi, only difference is that they disguise themselves as being family friendly all the while being shady.

It sure is! Don't understand why you get the down-votes. Whoever does not like the G Cloud must have been dropped down a well, head first, when they were of a younger age.

I wonder if Microsoft will perform better in Japan if they do actually make a handheld since everyone says handheld and mobile are king over there.

This looks like the future of the game industry... all three platforms with a handheld option.

I wonder if the Playstation Portal is a technology test-bed/prototype for a future Playstation handheld?

It’s a possibility but I can’t help but think would that be the best way to go about it? Though it would give you data on how much it is used and game type. It’s still not a true portable device and so people approach it differently. I think that data on phones, tablets, and of course the competition would give a better indication.

But I really think if Sony is considering a new PSP that could play ps5 games, now would be the time to dive in. Honestly, if they do this, it would be huge.

Doubt if Sony PS wants to support a new handheld with first party games. Something they lacked with the Vita. What they should do is have a handheld that is like the PS Portal which can play all games but play those games on the go as well as at home. Something like that is a better investment.

Agreed that you will probably never see a separate line of games specifically for the handheld (a la PSP or PSVita). The modern economics and expectations of game development make that cost prohibitive. What makes more sense is if the full-fat game on PS5 or PS6 has a special "handheld" profile that is automatically optimized for the lower spec handheld. There would be some significant compromises compared to the bigger console variant, but it would be the same game overall and would only require a single purchase.... somewhat what the Switch does with a lower resolution when playing handheld versus docked.
