Agreed. GTA has made money off the same game now for its third generation.

I really would love it if they reimagined Pitfall. It was a really good game and would like to see it re-imagined as a cross between Uncharted games and Indiana Jones movies.

"Ken Kutaragi Doesn't See The Point in the Metaverse"....

Lot's of people don't see the point of Snap Chat, Tik Tok, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter too but there is literally 100's of millions that do.

Heck my mom and dad don't see the point in streaming movies and TV either nevermind playing what they call "pointless" video games. Maybe we should have an article on that.

@Chevalier and @Seraphim
Both Amazon and Netflix were very clear to investors that they could turn a profit but chose to take the money and instead invest in their company and services. Profit does not equal a financially sound business. Businesses make capital investments into themselves all the time which eats their profits to stay on top of their market. A viable financial business is much different then a profitable one.

Point I am making is that MS knows GP...

GP is five years old. You don't keep doing something that is not financially sound after five years.

In business, you typically wait up to 2-3 years. If it isn't making money you shut it down.

A month away from launch and the trailer was pretty much non-existent on gameplay.

Everyone thinks that Sony needs to dominate console sales for some reason. There is nothing special about PS5 or XSX. Both are made by the same chip makers with generally the same physical architecture. They are essentially PCs and could easily run PC operating systems.

The OS and firmware are pretty generic as well. Sony uses a Linux based OS and MS uses Windows as its base. Again nothing special.

It is all about the games and services. To me, Sony...

Consoles are not redundant. They are a really good living room devices. Easy to manage and pre-configured for TV and entertainment. No messing around. I can buy a console, bring it home and in under 15 mins it is doing its final updates to use. I buy a PC and I spend hours getting it to a state equal to a console. There is a place for consoles and there is a place for PCs. If consoles have to survive based on time exclusivity of games then they were not meant to survive.

Just because they make exclusives doesn't make it right.

As for exclusives on PCs. You are correct to a degree, but one of the major revenue sources for the vendors is their services (PS+, PSNow, XBL, XB GamePass). On PC, if the game is not a part of one of those services and PCs are not buying the services, then the profit is significantly less.

@Crows90
By having all these different platforms, game developers are forced to make games on all the platforms to make profits. I would argue that dedicating resources to PCs ,Macs, and three different consoles is choking innovation. Most third party games are not as good as exclusives because they have to develop on so many platforms.

Competition is great. I doubt innovation will slow because of any acquisition. Tech innovation is driven by new hardware capab...

The only two things I would love to see here is a new Pitfall game along the lines of Indiana Jones movies and Uncharted games plus a new Geometry Wars game!

It really says very little actually. Until both PS and XB are completely not constrained by supply sales numbers only tell us how much the manufactures were able to get to market.

Switch is going for #1 all time. They currently have the momentum to get there. The question will be whether the momentum continues. It certainly looks like it will.

Personally, I hate exclusivity.

It is wrong no matter what company does it.

Gamers are gamers no matter what platform they own. Exclusivity separates the gaming community between haves and have nots.

Whether it is Mario, Metroid, Halo, Zelda, Forza's, GT, TLOU, God of War, Gears of War, Candy Crush, WoW, Diablo, Crash, Doom, Wolfensteing, Elder Scrolls, Ratchet & Clank, Killzone, Spider-man or whatever... Exclusivity does nothi...

You have to remember that Sony is a Japanese company. American and European governments won't care too much that MS acquisitions would hurt Japanese companies. They will look more at how it affects North America and Europe.

America for sure is not going to stop an American company become bigger then a Japanese company in a market segment. As for the overall view it is hard for anyone to stop MS from doing this and more. They certainly are not dominating the gaming i...

You are correct. Even with this acquisition it does not put MS on the top of gaming. In their investor call, they clear state that from a revenue perspective they are still behind both Tencent and Sony.

How can you be a monopoly when you don't have the largest share of the market?

Platforms can mean many things here....

They could mean ...

iOS, Android, Windows, PS, Nintendo, and XB....

or platform could be Cloud, mobile, PC, and console...

If it is the latter, (which I think it is), you will see a slow phase out of PS and Nintendo support over the next few years.

Also, if you listen to their call with investors, both companies talk about the metaverse. MS must be cooking ...

This is really a power move. Sony's been picking up studios for the past year or so, MS has just done something Sony can't...

Go and pay $70 bln in cash to swallow one of the biggest third party publishers on the planet. The only way Sony could do this is through a merger.

887d ago 0 agree2 disagreeView comment

You would think that Sony would focus on their broad consumer support in Japan and Europe. But instead they are ignoring their loyal consumers to try and entice North America.

Interesting, personally I am not really bought into Kinect as a "gamers" device.

I do see a lot of use for smart glass though... Especially for RTS and RPG games where menus and keyboards would be typical in the games.

BS...

Sony tried to sell a $599 console last gen.

If you look at history, $499 is the usual starting price for consoles.

Sony is not pro-consumer by going to $399... They are just desperate to gain market share because their business has been faltering for the past 5-7 years. They don't do good this gen and Sony's game business would have moved to games only instead of games and hardware.
