Is Mortal Kombat 1 a Remake or a Soft Reboot

Shang Tsung exits a fiery portal in Mortal Kombat 1

Mortal Kombat 1 was recently announced to an excited audience of fans. The game will be available for nearly all platforms. But many have been confused with the naming convention of the latest MK game. Is this going to be a remake of the original game from 1992? Or is it a reboot of some kind? In this guide, we will answer all questions about the odd name of Mortal Kombat 1.

Will Mortal Kombat 1 Be a Remake?

Mortal Kombat 1 is not a remake, but instead more of a reboot of the franchise. More precisely, the game is going to be something of a soft reboot of the Mortal Kombat story.

This was clarified by the CCO and co-creator of NetherRealm Studios Ed Boon at a recent “Kommunity Chat” event with the community manager Tyler Lansdown. During this live online event, he cleared up the confusion and explained the nature of Mortal Kombat 1.

What Makes Mortal Kombat 1 a Soft Reboot?

Mortal Kombat 1 represents a tangential sequel to the events of MK11. In that game, the villain Kronika tampered with time, and it fell on Liu Kang and Raiden to fix it. However, due to Shang Tsung’s machinations, they failed and a new timeline emerged.

That way, Mortal Kombat 1 is going to start from this new timeline with reimagined characters and their roles in the world. So far, we know that some familiar faces will be returning: Sub-Zero, Raiden, Johnny Cage, Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Kitana, and Mileena. These characters will all be available from the start. Shang Tsung will also appear, but only as a pre-order bonus.

Along with these classic characters, many other fan favorites will hopefully make an appearance over time. It’s going to be interesting to see how NetherRealms plans to refresh all of them, and how they’ll fit into the new world of Mortal Kombat.
