Diablo 4 has evolved quite a bit during its development, taking on many new gameplay aspects and design choices. The world is much more of an open world, with side questing and world bosses. There are opportunities aplenty to interact with other players, and many challenges are meant to be taken on as a group. These changes make many players wonder if the game is switching to being a full-on MMO.
An MMO is a Massively Multiplayer Online game for those who don’t know. These games focus on having hundreds, if not thousands, of players in a giant interconnected open world.
Titles in this category include World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XIV, and New World. Since Blizzard is World of Warcraft’s developer, they have tons of experience working with the genre. Would it make sense to bring this experience over to the Diablo franchise?

Can Diablo IV Be Considered an MMO?
The answer is no, Diablo 4 is not an MMO. While Diablo 4 is working on making the game more interpersonal, the game is still not an MMO. Players can only play with three other players at a time. Interactions with other players will be limited otherwise.
Many players may be glad to hear this, as turning the franchise into an MMO would seriously deviate from its original premise. Diablo puts a lot of weight on personal achievement and progression, and adding many MMO aspects would undermine this in favor of large-scale multiplayer and incentives for social content. Blizzard’s goal is to get closer to the MMO genre, but not completely switch genres. The game is still considered an ARPG.
