Baldur’s Gate 3 – How to Stop the Windmill and Save Barcus

Player exploring the vast world of Baldur's Gate 3.

Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 has innumerable side quests scattered about. If you like saving cats stuck in trees and Gnomes stuck in windmills, this article will explain how to stop the windmill in Baldur’s Gate 3.

In the first Act, on your way to the Goblin Camp to rescue the Druid Halsin, you’ll pass through the Blighted Village, west of the Druids’ Grove. There you will meet some Goblins on the bridge, stirring up trouble. You can easily talk your way out of that situation to avoid violence. On the other hand, you always have the option of fighting them, but that may be a waste of resources. On the northwest side of the village, you will find a windmill. Provided you haven’t already murdered all of the Goblins, there will be a group of them in front of it, harassing a Dark Gnome, tied up to a windmill sail. Let’s see how to stop that windmill in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Stopping the Windmill in the “Rescue the Gnome” Quest

When you and your party approach the windmill in Blighted Village, you will get the “Rescue the Gnome” Quest. There, a group of Goblins is laughing at a tied-up Dark Gnome, hanging from a windmill sail. They will, of course, try to extort you for some money and threaten to tie you up. You can fight the Goblins, or you can use Persuasion, Intimidation, or your Illithid Powers to make them go away. However you deal with them, now you are tasked with stopping the windmill’s sails to rescue the poor Gnome.

Enter the windmill itself, and there, on its mechanism, you will see two levers. One is labeled as the Brake lever, and the other as the Release Brake lever. The Brake lever will stop the sails and allow you to untie the poor guy. The Release Brake lever will make the sails spin even faster, launching the Gnome, with hilarious but deadly results. Pay attention to which one you pull, and move the camera if need be to be 100% sure before clicking. Provided you have pulled the Brake lever, you can untie the Gnome and complete the quest.
