Lack of DX12?? Is DX12 even released yet??

decrypt3326d ago (Edited 3326d ago )

Well question is 60fps at what res, 1080p is a last gen standard now.

1440p is the new 1080p. While 4k is the new 1440p.

@Lev1903

Why so? Things move on, many people are upgrading to 1440p now. 1080p is the 720p of this gen. I think 1-2 years more into this gen and 1440p will probably be more relevant to pc gamers than 1080p.

Lev19033326d ago

Im sorry, but that is one of the stupidest things i have read here.

Nekroo913326d ago

You need 2 gtx 980 for a higher resolution, its not even stable at 60fps.

I have one gtx 980 and im expecting 30/40 fps at 1440p, so ill rather play it with 1080p.

Im curious to see how much sales will affect them, if they sell alot of copies on consoles they might change their focus, just like Bioware with Dragon Age.

ChristopherJack3326d ago

While 'at what res' was a valid question, claiming 1080p as a last gen standard is hardly accurate when it is still the standard today. On another note I fully expect 4k to EVENTUALLY become the mainstream replacement, I don't think QHD will ever become mainstream- MAYBE in budget markets but I just don't see it.

Lev19033326d ago

First of all. There is no next gen in pc gaming only in consoles.

Second is that alot of casual pc gamers are having trouble to play the latest games at 1080P at highest settings. So saying that the 1440P is the new standard is really stupid.

And saying that 4k is the new 2k is really weird thing to say. And only the elite pc gamers who buy like 1000 dollars in hardware ever year can get that resolution on their pc. 1080P is the standard and will remain standard for the coming years.

frostypants3326d ago

"1080p is the 720p of this gen"

Uh...no. That would only be the case if the majority of platforms supported 1440p, which they don't.

Articuno763325d ago

It says right there in the article:

"As Gamestar reported, an Intel i7-4790 with 16GB of RAM and an NVIDIA GTX980 was able to run the game at 1080p on Ultra settings with almost constant 60fps. "

mattdillahunty3325d ago

recently built a rig with an i5 4690k @ 4.4GHz and SLI Windforce 970's, so i should be good to go. been waiting so long for this game.

starchild3325d ago (Edited 3325d ago )

With this news I'm sure I'll be able to play it at ultra settings on my GTX 970 and G-Sync monitor. If the framerate fluctuates between something like 45fps and 70fps it will feel quite smooth and I'll be very satisfied. G-Sync makes a huge difference and has been the best thing I've done for my PC gaming.

Hitman07693325d ago (Edited 3325d ago )

decrypt is correct. Not quite sure what Lev is angry about??? Maybe he just doesn't understand... In any event have a great weekend everyone, try not to get angry over this stuff it's quite silly.

@Starchild that sounds sweet, I'll look into that.

Bladesfist3325d ago

Not sure why so many people disagreed with decrypt. What is the point of getting a 980 if you game at 1080p. I have been managing 1440p/Ultra/60fps in games so far with my 980. If I was gaming at 1080p I would have gone with a 970 or lesser card.

@decrypt

seriously, when will pc elitist understand that 1440p will never be mainstream? most TVs nowadays are 1080p and the top of the line ones are 4k. NOBODY speaks of 1440p in home entertainment. that's just a fact but a certain niche group of pc gaming elitist in their bubble really think that 1440p is a thing when it really just a miniscule portion of the grand scheme of things. in many places in the world, 1440p monitors aren't even being sold! consoles are targeted for the living room, not pc monitors. let's just keep it at that.

console gaming are 1080p now and next, it will be 4k but in at least another 5 years. 1440p? MS, Sony and Nintendo won't even care about that res considering how niche they are.

mikeslemonade3325d ago

One 970 won't be enough.

But I smell parity here. They try to fit it on the consoles held this game back.

@Khajiit86

Yeah, it's pretty ridiculous to expect the game to have DX12 support when it must have been well in to development when MS announced the standard.

Maybe they'll patch it to take advantage of some DX12 features, or maybe the improvements to DX11 that are coming - but it seems to me that the game looks and runs extremely well - so DX12 is not really relevant to The Witcher 3 at all

Articuno763325d ago

I wouldn't put it past them to patch DX12 support in later to be honest. That's going by the way CD Projekt Red have approached the post-release support of the previous Witcher games.

They treat their software releases as long-term investments into the software market rather than grab-cash-and-run affairs.

starchild3325d ago

@Articuno76

That's true about CD Projekt Red. I wouldn't be surprised if they took the trouble to patch in DX12 support later.

Then again, it seems that they have optimized the game pretty well anyway. And the build Gamestar played was probably a month or more old. Not to mention that we still have a couple months left until the game comes out.

Better performance, though, is always a plus.

NuggetsOfGod3326d ago

So the witcher 3 is not as demanding as i thought.

Roccetarius3326d ago

It's not hard to guess why it is that way.

Adexus3326d ago

Sounds really well optimized already! Got a 970 myself so hoping it'll run smoothly.

Spinal3326d ago

I'm thinking bout getting the GTX970 to replace my Radeon R9 280x....

Khajiit863326d ago (Edited 3326d ago )

I love my 970, got the reference card at bestbuy matching newegg. There is better ones but none looked better to me than the reference card. My PSU is white LED so it lights up the bottom of the card, looks beautiful.

Adexus3326d ago

Really like my 970, had no issues with the card itself despite all the "3.5GB+500MB VRAM" controversy.

I've had one issue with one of the fans randomly spinning on full but MSI have said it's their fault for putting the sticker over the fan, I've made a custom fan curve in Afterburner anyway which fixed it :)

ChristopherJack3326d ago

Why? The gains aren't worth the investment given that AMD's R* 3** series is supposedly around the corner. On another note if bang for buck is your main concern, I'd suggest looking at the R9 295x2 if you can handle it, it's had some amazing prices lately & still remains the fastest graphics card topping even the latest Titan.

Shinuz3326d ago

Yeah same here, although i've got an i5 760 @4ghz. Heres hoping it'll run smootlhy enough. I just can't wait for this game.

trywizardo3326d ago

i7 with the latest graphic card and just 60fps
master race my ass ...

TechnoSphere3326d ago

ultra settings...(i.e. not een available on consoles).

UltraNova3325d ago

ultra settings..(i.e. not even available/capable to 99% of PCs)

Yeah the truth stings..

Hell my OCed 290x should struggle hitting 20-30fps @ 1080p ultra settings...

Two-Face3326d ago

Just 60fps? You make it sound like 60fps is a bad thing, then what the hell is 30fps on console? Unplayable?

Khajiit863326d ago

How do you even have a bubble? Give that back to who ever donated it to you.

oIITSBIIo3326d ago

Only 60fps is 200% better than your console.

ShottyGibs3326d ago

Lol Jealous much?

Here's the clencher...

1080p Ultra @ 60fps or 4k Low (console settings) @ 30fps (console frame rate)

Bdub20003325d ago

LOL, ultra @ 60fps might be attainable on PS5 in 10 years... So yeah, master race. Let's see, its several more times powerful than PS4, runs games at 4k... I guess compared to ps4' s recent releases at 900p, what else do you need to hear?

starchild3325d ago

Ultra settings on the most graphically advanced open world game ever created and getting 60fps is no small achievement.

weirdo3326d ago

sounds well optimised. no doubt it'll be even better optimised on ps4 :)

Bloodjunkie3326d ago

Sorry but this isnt't worth a 1.500$ PC for me. I stay with the better optimized version on my PS4!

guyman3326d ago

"I stay with the better optimized version on my PS4"

Diaries of an insecure console owner. 25-30 fps vs constant 60 fps is a massive difference for a game like the witcher. Also, the Witcher is a franchise built originally for the PC and by PC devs. Sorry, so actually enjoy the least optimized version of the game on the Ps4/xbox one whilst PC gamers enjoy the far better version.

Bloodjunkie3326d ago

60fps is surely not necassary for such a rpg! But surely the will put more effort to bring the most out of the PS4 than out of the PC version. Two years ago nobody cares about 30 or 60 frames. It's nice to see it but surely not necassary or worth so much money.

HammadTheBeast3326d ago

I'm getting it on PS4, even I found his comment stupid.

3325d ago
Vegamyster3326d ago

You don't need a $1500 PC and we don't even know how it runs on the PS4 lol.

Bloodjunkie3326d ago

? a gtx980 costs almost 700$ so a complete PC will surely cost around 1500$

ChristopherJack3326d ago (Edited 3326d ago )

You will only want the 980 if you want to max every single setting. Something like a second gen+ i5 or fx 8350 paired with a 7970 or 680 should still run this game quite nicely with several settings maxed, 7870 or 660ti should remain a playable experience similar to PS4.

Vegamyster3326d ago (Edited 3326d ago )

Well it's not necessary, the PS4 version is targeting 30 fps high settings, OCing a 970 (under $400) will give pretty much the same performance for a fraction of the price and when AMD releases their new cards prices will drop.

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Also i7's in general are overkill, the gaming performance between them and i5's are minimal. Assuming you're building a PC from scratch which PC gamers typically already have one, $1100 with everything including OS will be sufficient for similar performance to the build in this article.

Psychotica3326d ago

Who is buying a $1,500 PC just for this one game??

TardcoreGamer3326d ago

The Witcher 3 is free if you buy an Nvidia card this month..

sorane3326d ago

By "better optimized" you mean just turning down the settings to below even PC high settings and cutting the framerate in half at best.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum...

Yeah have fun with that neutered version.....

Corpser3326d ago

That makes no sense, spend a lot less on a pc and you can play at ps4 settings

AndrewLB3325d ago

So it's worth a $700+ console? Because that's what the PS4 actually costs when you factor in having to pay for online gaming.

And for $700 you can easily build a PC capable of playing Witcher 3 at PS4 level graphics but with higher frame rates. Then when you factor in how PC games cost a lot less, the game library is beyond massive, and you can actually make money using a PC... well, it's a far better deal.

The 7 Best Western RPGs: Immersive Adventures

RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.

SimpleSlave20d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan20d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.

I can't fk with this list. They missed on alot of games probably before the writers times. Also I know people loved some portal but I was never a fan.

Tomb Raider 1
Driver 1
Abe’s Odyssey
FF6
King of Fighters 94
Mortal Kombat OG

Street Fighter 2
Resident Evil 1

Inverno44d ago

Infinite but not the first two games? Witcher 3 but not the first two games?? GTA V but not literally any of the games before it??? Portal 2 but not the first? Also if you're going to play Shadow of The Colossus play the remaster and not the remake. Can't say I disagree with the list but my man it's all over the place.

Name Last Name44d ago

I mean some sequels are objectively better and you don’t need to play the whole series.

Inverno44d ago

But most of these games have a story to follow, sure you can catch up with a YouTube vid but where's the fun in that?

LucasRuinedChildhood44d ago (Edited 44d ago )

A list like this isn't telling you not to play the previous games if you want to. It's just giving you legendary games to play.

But tbh, you don't always have to force yourself to play every entry in a franchise to get to the better ones.

- The vast majority of Witcher 3 players never played the first 2 and had a great time. The first 2 games aren't in the same league.
- The GTA games are self-contained with the odd fun reference. You can easily jump into any of them.
- The Shadow Of The Colossus remake looks and controls better than the original (plus it has a 60fps option while the remaster is just 30fps). New players will enjoy it more.
- Portal 2 is a lot better than Portal 1 and takes the concept much further gameplay-wise. Storywise, Portal 1 is fairly light too. Not that you shouldn't play it but realistically ... you'd love Portal 2 whether you play it or not (at lot of Portal 2 players have never played 1).

Bioshock 1 is the only one I agree with you on simply because it's one the best games of all time and arguably better than Infinite. No other setting like Rapture.

Looking at the list, I'd recommend playing Uncharted 1 before 2 but no doubt, 2 is the legendary one you have to play.

Inverno44d ago

I get it, but that's just my opinion on his opinion. I just think that before you play a sequel you should still play what came before it. Maybe it's just me but i find it fascinating playing through the first game in a series and seeing how it has evolved through its sequels. Like I said I don't disagree with the list, other than SoTC which I strongly believe the remaster of the original should be played above the remake.

AuraAbjure44d ago

Awesome list! Hot take on Fear (and it's hard af expansion Persaus Mandate!) Bioshock Infinite is stellar, so is the Witcher 3 and you nailed it by having Ocarina of Time. So many fantastic games! Gotta play 'em all! Next one on my list is Prey after I beat Dead Space 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.
