ME2 Arrival DLC Playing Dirty

DLC has become standard issue these days. Mass Effect 2 takes full advantage of the system which forces game owners to pay more money to buy the complete version of their already steep $50-$60 investment. What ever happened to the days of free add-ons and expansion packs?

Read about what EA has done according to the first reviews after the break...

Shoulda gave it like a $3-5 price if it's really that short.

dry_ice4777d ago

Yeah, this is getting a little out of hand...

Nate-Dog4777d ago

It's BS. Like someone said in the other topic about the DLC's length, if you play it on easy and blow through the enemies, don't watch cutscenes and conversations then yeah, it's about an hour, that's the only reason these sort of articles are made. I played it on Insanity, died only about twice (I learned my lesson from how many times I used to die in missions in the main story before on Insanity) and it took me about 2.5 - 3 hours.

dry_ice4777d ago

It's exactly that kind of thinking that will perpetuate this kind of exploitation. To me that kind of money isn't worth a couple hours added on to an already large purchase.

gamingdroid4777d ago

... and everyone thought map packs from Activision was expensive while pro-claiming their love for EA!

The sheep turned out to be a wolf!!!

femshep4777d ago

honestly people just are never satisfied even if the price was cheaper then they would cry about the length or if the length was good then they'd complain about the content, ive heard people complain about free downloads before its just stupidity in the end

Solidus187-SCMilk4777d ago (Edited 4777d ago )

I was hoping it would be as good as Lair of the SB.

Im sure it will still be good so Ill buy it eventually. I have to finish my insane game before I but it anyways. Maybe it will go on sale some time.

Im more disappointed at bioware for makng the cerebrus netwwork acces kinda lame. What about all the Free DLC??? Zaeed was just something cut from the final game and firewalker was just ok. Im glad I got it with my new game, Id be pissed if I bought it separate because it sure as shit isnt worth paying 15$ for access to cerbrus network for people who bought it used.

I think this should be free for people with cerbus since it leads into ME3.

The gaming public as a whole does not like DLC. Sales numbers do not lie. What console is the only one that DOESN'T push DLC at you? The Wii. What is the highest-selling console with the majority of this gen's highest-selling games? The Wii.

cyclonus0074777d ago

Third party publishers are the ones that are pushing for constant DLC now (thanks CoD). And while the Wii does have a lot of high selling games, most of their sales come from being packaged with the system.

But I digress. You don't have to buy DLC and it's a way for companies to make some money from the used market. It sucks for people that bought the game day one but its a steal if you bought the game used for $20.

gamingdroid4777d ago (Edited 4777d ago )

If you wait long enough, you will get the entire game with all the DLC released with possible extra content never available before for $20.

Early adopters that bought the ME1 LE for instance got screwed content wise. Now if you kept the game sealed or in excellent condition, it is worth a lot on eBay because it was so rare....

I see no reasons to get a game day-1 anymore, except for maybe Gears of War 3!

cyclonus0074777d ago

Exactly. It's a double-edged sword. Publishers want the pre-orders and day one sales but everyone now knows the game is going to be cheaper in a few months, sometimes weeks. If you wait long enough, you can buy the game and get the dlc for less than the actual cost of the game. On the other hand, if everyone waits, the game doesn't make enough money. There are a bunch of games that have come out in the last few years that were good but didn't get the sales to warrant a sequel (I still want that Mirror's Edge 2, dammit). A poor selling game can shutter a studio.

I treat games like movies. If there's a movie coming out that appeals to me, I go on opening weekend. Even though I know it will cost me less if I wait to rent it. If we gamers don't show companies that there is a market for other titles beyond Military multiplayer FPS, that's all companies will make.

And it will be our own fault.

Solidus187-SCMilk4777d ago

I think some DLCs are good, but I think that even alot of the good ones are overpriced.

DaReapa4777d ago (Edited 4777d ago )

"...does this mean exploitation of gamers will become common practice for major titles in the future?" -author

Sadly, the exploitation of gamers has already become common practice for major titles in the future, present, or otherwise.

dry_ice4777d ago

You've got a point. A strong case can be made that we're experiencing the escalation of that exploitation. Gaming is becoming an upper-class luxury instead of the common man's relaxation.

DaReapa4777d ago

Exactly. Gaming is indeed becoming an upper-class luxury. Long gone are the days where the only thing you had to pay for extra content was time and dedication to beating a game on the most difficult setting.

femshep4776d ago

what happened to our hobby should be the rel question.....look at the wii its all casual 3rd aprty crap.....and MS and Sony are following suit....bethesda started the DLC rein with the horse armor pack....and uncaring parents let little kids play games that are not for them and the kids get into trouble and somehow it gets spun to games never movies or books which tend to be worse more or less of the time....and then we as dedicated fans get caught up in favoritism and end up arguing over 2 things that in a sense are exactly the same and the media eats it up =[

Oldman1004777d ago

I have never purchased a single piece of dlc so far this gen. And i plan on never doing so unless its actually worth it.

The 7 Best Western RPGs: Immersive Adventures

RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.

SimpleSlave21d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan21d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave21d ago (Edited 21d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.

EA Hopes to Use Generative AI to Drive Monetization and Make Development 30% More Efficient

Today Electronic Arts CEO Andrew Wilson provided a look into his ideas for the use of generative AI in the company's development processes.

I wonder what the next buzz word they'll slap in front of AI to make it sound exciting next? "Generative" as if it's creating its own content. Lol.

Cacabunga50d ago

EA is already dying a painful death..

peppeaccardo50d ago

i have a better idea .. why the whole exec team doesn't get replaced by chat bots ?

just_looken50d ago

Though i agree the ai thing is already in other forms of media there have been ai translations/scripts/voice over and even full ai commercials aired on tv. Ubisoft has created a ai game creator story/vo/music except the building of the game

The new unreal engine has auto terrain creation tools

In the world of greed in which it is winning without any major blow back ai is our future.

everyone want's biden dead on the mic or a criminal instead of a woman and now we are getting ai everything because no one will stop watching/playing ai created media.

GamerRN50d ago

Maybe they should just focus on making good games?

Just a thought...

Kiryu199249d ago

Exactly EA are just pure evil. When they are beating Bank of America to be voted the worst company to work for that’s saying a lot

Good thing I don’t buy their games day one and wait for deep deep sale years after launch (the select few games I am actually interested in)

Gaming is making so much money yet the greed of these companies is never ending

CEO’s and people on board making millions yet cutting jobs to those who are actually making the products

Knightofelemia50d ago (Edited 50d ago )

EA is still a shady shitty company even with or without the help of Skynet. All they will use AI for is new ways to milk loot boxes and come up with the same sports title with a different year on the label. They are one company I truly do hate with a passion. They single handedly ruined some great franchise with their death touch. ME, Dead Space, Alice Returns, Dante's Inferno.

EA layoffs followed by 'Generative AI to Drive Monetization'

I knew it. Wonder what AI salary looks like? Nothing.

ChasterMies50d ago

I having a feeling that most of the layoffs in the industry are based on the idea that AI will do the same job for less.

DarXyde49d ago

Very likely, yes.

Made worse by the fact that the execs aren't changing their compensations.

My deepest fear at this point is that we are now in the capitalism endgame.

At this point, we really should just burn AI to the ground. Executives cannot be trusted to do the right thing.
How are those people expected to support families if everything gets automated?

Barlos50d ago (Edited 50d ago )

And take away creativity, and people's jobs as we've been seeing. Got it.

No thanks. I want my games created by people, not AI.

CobraKai50d ago

Exactly. If or when games start becoming more AI than people, im done with gaming. AI and companies like EA can suck donkey d***k.

just_looken50d ago

Though i agree remember this is no ps3/360 era were we got up to 3 games in one generation from on developer like gears/halo/bioware/sony/ms

The people today are pro esg/sweet baby for the most part AAA gaming is imploding right now.

We should be stepping back re evaluate everything as a whole this year xmen 97 written/directed by a woman that is nuts and its also being made by a group reshaping bodies to be less sexual like wtf. A dam famous cartoon from the 90's is being rebuilt with millions spent to be worse in everyway.

Gaming/movies/tv shows made today are worse than what we had 7years ago ai won't change this but that ai is also being made by these groups so either way we are screwed.
https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Eonjay49d ago

Don't be of afraid of women. Sexy characters in games and movies still exist. Got my Stellar Blade on preorder!!! Everything all the time doesn't need to be sexual...that's stupid, childish and dull.

Chocoburger50d ago (Edited 50d ago )

EA doesn't want to lose their title of worst gaming company ever, always trying their best to remain the champs!
What's sad is that they have so much potential to be a decent publisher.

SSX Tricky / SSX 3
Def Jam Vendetta / Fight for New York
NBA Street
NFL Steet
Mirror's Edge
Bad Company
Burnout 3 / 4 / 5

Remember when EA used to be awesome? It's all over with now. Unpolished, if not out-right broken games these days. Endless monetization and gambling in their sports games, and let's not forget wasting hours of your life trying to unlock characters or equipment using "surprise boxes!"
