Peter Molyneux: Fable II Was "Rubbish"

Peter Molyneux, the creator of Fable, is famous for enthusiastically overhyping his games to the point that they cannot possibly live up to players' expectations. This is the man who made the simple addition of a dog in Fable II sound like an industry-changing revolution.

So imagine their surprise, when GamesRadar meet Molyneux for a Fable III demo during E3 last week, and the first thing he says to them is: "Fable II's story was rubbish." He wasn't done. Before the end of their half-hour together, Molyneux had used that same word to trash the maps, menus, visuals, weapons and co-op in his last game as well.

Misleading headline. 'The story was rubbish' and 'the GAME was rubbish' are two totally different things.

rubish? it may have not lived up to your hype peter but this game is not rubish its actually a personal favourite and i would tell anyone who is interested in a 360 to pick it up

@dizzleK
not out the industry i just think he has had enough of microsoft personally, he still creates good games and your right he should talk down on them, :S you didt like iver fable =/ o well guess its not for every 1

@Jamegohanssj5
he admitted he was interested in move it would be nice to see what he could do with the ps3s power etc or even with move then guy is a real talent, but i doubt his going anywhere

Jamegohanssj55056d ago

He's leaving to start making games for Sony soon.

sid4gamerfreak5056d ago

@Jamegohanssj5: Keep dreaming...

I think its brave for a dev to step and say his earlier game was rubbish. Hopefully he can improve and take action on those words and make him next game better

NecrumSlavery5056d ago (Edited 5056d ago )

Where's B.C. Peter? I've been waiting for that game almost 7 years.

tinybigman5056d ago

it was a waste of $60 for me and i will not be buying part 3. both part 1&2 were huge letdowns.

IMO, Fable 2 was great experience, but the climax was 'rubbish'

I enjoyed playing it alot, but it's most due to the fact I loved Fable: Lost Chapters sooo much.
I wouldn't have really given it much thought to pick up Fable 2 if i hadn't played Fable: LC (one of the best WRPG ever!)

But Fable 2 fell short of my expectations, esp. with the un-inspired story line.

Anon19745056d ago

I loved the game. The story actually didn't matter that much to me as the game to me was more about the side quests. I found those more interesting than the main story, but that didn't in any way dampen how much fun I had with this game.

Can't wait for Fable 3.

emk20045055d ago

the end was horrible and the story was not as good as the first games. but still i also had problems with the gamepay i liked the first games hack and slash better, and the no mana system i thought was stupid all you had to do was hod x down for like 4 seconds with lighting and you would just pwn everything.

Jaces5056d ago

For once Peter I agree with you. Better not repeat your mistake with Fable III

TheTwelve5056d ago

Course, he didn't say it was rubbish upon release.

TheTwelve5056d ago (Edited 5056d ago )

double-post

tplarkin75056d ago

The actual quote is "Fable II's story was rubbish". But, there's no professionalism in games journalism, so this is typical.

knight6265056d ago

do u see the pattern? mostly all xbox developers say that their game will push the xbox to its limits but when they make a sequel that bash their own game saying the first or second game was rubbish or crap and they say their next game will be better

Garnett5056d ago

I was just going to say this, its not all xbox devs its only peter.

He is known for over hyping his games, and if he says Fable 2 was shit, then we say "Oh fable 2 was good"

games4fun5056d ago (Edited 5056d ago )

rubbish was the fact of how little depth the game really had. It was a bare bones rpg with a tacked on love system. Not to mention each person in the game was 1 dimensional. Everyone looked the same. No personal story or anything to uncover of a random person. You only learned anything about the heroes for the main quest.

Fable 3 should have personal vendetta's. The guy powers up the longer it takes to find you or more people join in his posse as he recruits people to kill you.

How about 20 randomly placed people who you can have an interactive love story with them and get to know them. Sure not every gamer will find them and it may even be great for people who created a marriage only to find a character with depth and are forced to make a decision in terms of loyalty.

How about having far reaching consequences for your actions. Being barred from a whole town forever. Or having to change your appearance or something like that. The art style can be light hearted but the game consequences don't need to be.

There are hundreds of things they could do to make fable a worthwhile game. Just simple things, hell Bioware's Oblivian has more depth than Fable in terms of instanced stories you can do. So what is a first party's excuse.

Looking back on it now, i feel as if Fable 2 is a kiddy watered down half the content version of Oblivian.

Peter Molyneux Step your game up. Having a cool artstyle isn't cutting it anymore. Especialy if you keep hyping stuff the way you do.

how about adding the extra discs.
What is with first party microsoft games skimping on the disc count. it may be "last" gen but at least we know the content is there. Fable 3 should be a four disc game.

Olly5055d ago

It's Bethesda Softworks who made Oblivion, not BioWare :P.

games4fun5055d ago

thanks for correcting me i usually don't get studios mixed up.

bubble.

AAACE55056d ago

Now I don't feel so bad for not liking Fable 2! There were so many things I didn't like about that game. One thing were the voice actors. You can't put anyone with a european accent in a role and have it be good. Just like american voices... some people just aren't worth listening to!

Long story short... I won't be buying Fable 3 either!

AliTheBrit195055d ago

Same here Danger, was a real personal favourite of mine, love the feel of the game, kind of to me sums up what a video game is.

dizzleK5056d ago (Edited 5056d ago )

peter, shut up. you saying your own work is shit now really doesn't inspire me to run out and buy fable 3.

with all due respect this asshat should really just be drummed out of the industry. now fable 2 is garbage but before it came out this prick couldn't stop hyping it. i actually agree though, fable 2 was just as disappointing as the first. fool me once, shame on you. fool me twice, shame on me. fable doesn't get a 3rd chance, i'm not being suckered again.

SOAD5056d ago (Edited 5056d ago )

Do you even have a 360?

If you do then you probably wouldn't call Fable 2 garbage.

Fable 2 has its flaws but it falls short of being a bad game. It's a decent game with a few problems and was hyped to be a masterpiece, which it wasn't.

A garbage game is the Iron Man movie game or Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust.

Deathracer5056d ago

Yea Fable II was an awesome game, I'm playing it right now and still enjoying it. Plus getting ready for Fable III ;)

Millionaire5056d ago

Peter Molyneux: Fable II Was "Rubbish"

Welcome to reality brah

Gamester1015056d ago

I think it'd just be best if he kept quiet..

Moonboots5056d ago (Edited 5056d ago )

Yeah, did somebody drug up Peter? He's going off like a drunken prom date..

I believe he said the same thing about Fable 1 and said Fable 2 corrected much of the things he didn't like. Now he is saying the same for Fable 2? I actually liked Fable 2 but the way he talks makes me feel like a sucker for buying his game. Way to go Pete! Here is a spot of tea and a place to lay down and sober up.

EDIT: Or this is a miss quote??

skip2mylou5056d ago

sorry i went into his house before every e3 and drugged him up and put marry in his room with all the windows and doors closed :/ u know how we ninjas do

GuruStarr785056d ago

a few days ago.....finished the main story.....it was fun...but nowhere near worth 60 dollars as a new release......looking forward to fable 3, but I'll probably wait till it hits the bargain bin like 2.....

I'm pretty used to these lists being bad, but this one is particularly s#ite.

raWfodog145d ago

I think Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon should have been added to the list.

BrainSyphoned145d ago

I'll go with,
Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Culdcept Saga, Shadow Complex, Ace Combat 6 with the flight stick,A Kingdom for Keflings, A World of Keflings.
Bonus Kinect Games: Happy Action Theater and Sesame Street.
*Skyrim was so bad on PS3 that it almost deserves to be #1*

Husker42c145d ago

I really loved Shadow Complex.

P_Bomb145d ago

Ah yes, Shadow Complex! Good indies back in the day. Summer of Arcade. I enjoyed Trials Evolution as well.

ChasterMies145d ago (Edited 145d ago )

Was this made by a.i.? No human being would put Shadowrun, Fable III, and Splinter Cell: Conviction into a list of the 7 best Xbox 360 games.

Abnor_Mal145d ago (Edited 145d ago )

Would love to play Ace Combat6 on PlayStation, but Xbox decided to buy exclusivity and keep it off a competing platform.

The only mainline game I never played except for one level at a friends place. Game sold less than any other in the series if I remember correctly.

darthv72145d ago

360 had Namco hitters AC6 and RR6... both quality titles. You should at least bust out the 360 for AC6 if you can score the flight stick. Its great.

Hofstaderman145d ago

When the current gen XBOX offering is so lacking people need to refer to games released two generations back....

Profchaos144d ago (Edited 144d ago )

It's a nostalgia peice same reason we get thousands of YouTube videos on sega genisis. Something people have fond memories for but the era is long gone.

It's xboxs golden year imo it was their genisis years the time where they stuck it to the market leaders Sony.

BehindTheRows144d ago

They stuck nothing. Sony screwed themselves giving Xbox an opening. They would have gotten the usual smack down if the PS3 had launched at $399 and was easier to develop for.

Fable II - A Fantasy Series at Peak Performance

Fable II launched back in 2008 and remains the best the series has offered. Ahead of the series comeback, it's time to look at the classic.

They gotta bring back those gargoyles!

Dudeson309d ago

I'd love to play it again, this time on pc though. Forever waiting on that pc port.

GaboonViper309d ago

Loved this game, oh and i always saved my dog at the end, hope the new Fable has a animal companion.

got_dam309d ago

Fable 2 was the best inthe series. Peter waaaaaaay over promised with fable 1 and it was good but disappointing. He didn't go crazy eith hype for the second game and it was surprisingly awesome. Then he ran his mouth promoting 3 and it was the worst of the 3.

cthulhucultist308d ago

Funny story: Fable 3 had a funny way of keeping the promises you made in the first half of the game and having enough money to defeat the darkness.

You only had to collect enough money to buy 2 stores in a busy market district. You then raise the prices to maximum and you turn xbox 360 internal clock 99 or more years ahead.

The next time you load the game, all the rents from the 99 years are collected immediately.

But yes I agree that 3 was the weakest of the three.

Demetrius308d ago

I only got to play it once 😩 I'm so tempted to buy a Xbox 360 slim but planning on getting the series x soon since I got a PS5 in February Im ready to get saints row 1&2 back, GTA 4, fable 2, but I also want to play infamous 1&2 again Sony screwed us over with the stream only for saints row 2 and other gems smh

Dragon Quest 11 isn't even the best Dragon Quest game, it's a good game, but not the best. Dragon Quest 8 is superior to it in almost every way.

thorstein884d ago

...and 1 and 2 and 3 and 4....

I am biased.

Hofstaderman884d ago (Edited 884d ago )

OK let's end this, in order
Xenogears
Final Fantasy 8
Final Fantasy 7
Final Fantasy 9
Final Fantasy 6
Chrono Trigger
Legend of Dragoon
Breath of Fire 4
Breath of Fire 3
Dragon Quest 8
Dragon Quest 11
Vagrant Story
Saga Frontier 2
Chrono Cross
Suikoden 2
Suikoden
Threads of Fate
Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy XII
Lunar 2

Jiub884d ago

Sometimes I forget how much of a powerhouse the PS1 was

MadLad884d ago

I don't play too many jrpgs, and I'm trying to diversify a bit.

Outside of FF and Dragon Quest, what two games from that list do you most recommend someone trying? Doesn't matter if it's a sequel to another game or not.

Jiub884d ago

IMO: Chrono Trigger and Suikoden II

thorstein884d ago

Octopath Traveler is really good.

BlaqMagiq1884d ago

You have Threads of Fate on there which means you get my ultimate respect. Underrated and overlooked.

Exvalos884d ago

Man your dang near spot on absolute spot on choices

Epicor883d ago

I like your top 6 a lot. I don't have the same orders but all those games would make my top 10 RPG list most likely. Number 1 for me is FFIX. It holds a special place in my heart and imo it's the perfect Final Fantasy game.

In addition I would give special mention to some western RPG's as well: Skyrim and Mass Effect 2 were iconic games. Out of JRPG's I'd like to add Disgaea 2 on that list.

MadLad884d ago (Edited 884d ago )

Some of my personal favorites are Planescape: Torment, New Vegas, Morrowind, Kotor 2, Wasteland 3, Witcher 2, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, Deus Ex, Disco Elysium and Vampyr.

As far as jrpg, while I'm not as big a fan as I am for Western RPGs, I love Persona 3 - 5, Dragon Quest 8 and 11, Rogue Galaxy, Final Fantast 6,7, and 12; and Lost Odyssey.

LoveSpuds884d ago (Edited 884d ago )

Some quality taste in games there squire.

I'd add some Baldurs Gate 2 and Neverwinter Nights from back in the day too.

MadLad884d ago

Should have added BG2. Played through it many times over the years.

Never could get into Neverwinter Nights though. Not sure why.

Omegasyde884d ago

Loved rouge galaxy. Fav game from Level 5.

ManMarmalade884d ago

Legend of Dragoon #1 game of all time for me
