Jeff Minter jumps Aboard the Anti-Sony Bandwagon

Whilst you have to respect any man (apart from Wacko Jacko) who keeps Llamas, makes mind-bogglingly strange games and defiantly chooses to live out in rural West Wales, you also have to agree that Jeff Minter is well...to put it mildly, a bit strange.

The man who created Hover Bovver for the C64 back in 1983 is perhaps best well known for Llamasoft and more recently for the Xbox360 interactive visualiser which he calls "The first step into a future filled with beauty, light, creativity and fun". Being in his brain must be ace!

It seems that Minter really has fallen for the 360 dream, judging by his latest comments in his new, regular Edge magazine sound-off. Speaking about ambling into his local Carmarthen branch of GAME whilst enjoying a nice Cornish pasty, and being baffled at not wanting to put his name down on the PS3 pre-order list, Minter has a few harsh words to say about Sony.

i dont know, but this guy's statments seems valid to me. some of the things he said are real concerns and are true to a point. lets be honest(from one Sony supporter to another),the PS3, base on this past E3 didn't really live up to the hype(i know, it's still in its early phase.) as for the PSP, i own one and love it for all of its homebrew/non-gaming abilities, but it's getting its plasticass whooped by DS in the gaming department.

Does anyone really believe anything about gaming from one of the men that designed the Atari Jaguar and who was an admitted 360 fan from the start? Who cares what he thinks. If you want a PS3 get one because you will hear many negative statements even after the system comes out and proves that it is as good as you hope it is. There will always be critics even if a system has proven itself because we do not all like the same things. The PS3 may or may not take the lions share of the market but I would be willing to bet that it will sell anywhere from 50 Million – 100 Million just because of the games that it will. I also believe that Nintendo and Microsoft will sell 25-50 million because of the games that they have. In the end we could end up with 3 consoles that are extremely close in sells but this is all speculation until the systems come out and establish themselves

Secondly, "I didnt say the ps3 was expensive I said paying 600 dollars for a console is dumb ass hell" is the same thing. It's all relative. I'd liken it to comparing three Porsches. The Wii is like a Boxter. Fun to drive, convertable, and affordable (50k). The 360 is like a Cayman S. A blast to drive, track-ready, and very close to the 911 turbo at about half of the price (70k). Then you have the PS3 which is like a 911 turbo. It is only slightly better than the Cayman S in performance and quality, but with a good driver around a track, the 911 turbo would beat out the Cayman S every single time. One of the turbo's greatest on-road features, the awd, is also the turbo's greatest hinderances on the track. And at 130k, a bit out of reach for the average family. So which would I get? The 911 turbo, of course. Why pay that much more for a little more power? Well.....because it has a little more power and the difference in cost is relative. To most people, that difference would be a year's salary, for some though, it's only a matter of a month or two. I am fortunate enough to be in the latter category. Not bragging, just stating facts. And I don't know about you but I started working at 15 and kept on working all through out highschool to pay for college. Make sure that you have your priorities straight and you may be fortunate as me someday. I doubt it but.....just joking. Or am I?

Since the PS3 official unveiling, we've been hearing Sony execs extolling the virtues of the machine in increasingly astonishing ways. Most memorably, Ken Kutaragi telling gamers they should start working harder, because the console's going to be pretty damned expensive.

It seems that Sony's attitude hasn't escaped those on the development side of the industry and now videogames luminary Jeff Minter - of Llamasoft fame - has stepped up to give Sony a piece of his mind.

Writing in the latest issue of Edge magazine, Minter describes Sony's attitude as seeming "incredibly arrogant". Says Minter, "They seem absolutely certain that even when they say that it's going to be considerably more expensive than existing consoles, and that maybe there won't be that many titles actually available at launch, nonetheless us eager customers will rush out in droves to buy it because, hey, it's a new PlayStation."

Minter argues, "Just making the shiniest, most expensive harware doesn't cut it these days. Sure the PSP was beautiful, shining, pretty and posh, whereas the DS was definitely the ugly sister. But hey, the ugly sister is better in the sack".

For Minter, you see, it's all about the games and, at the moment, he feels the PS3 is distincly lacking in that area: "Yeah, you've got the lion's share of the current market, but don't get smug, Sony. He continues, "We need games, not smugness, games that will make me want to get hold of the PS3 rather than a bunch of stuff either identical or broadly similar to what I'll be playing on my 360. I want sweet Feisar temptation, not a bit of snotty attitude."

Sony has really said that quote and to be honest it has me worried. Will PS3 go the way of PSP? and keep releasing more movies than games? because pushing the UMD format for non-game media bombed as we all know!!!! so if Sony is smart enough they better turn back on that comment and get their mind back in on the games... even for PSP the games have got to start coming some time... it has been out long enough there is no excuse. But mine helped pay off a fat portion of my 360, now if it would've had more games than UMD overpriced movies... maybe I would've picked it up!

Grand total = $871.56 nearly all of which was in Gamestop's hands in September.

Yes, I have an iPod that I bought like a week ago and I love everything about it except its battery life and lack of downloadable iPod games on iTunes.

The same here. I ended up putting full payment ahead of time at Gamestop here in New york at 33rd street. Waited in the rain for about six hours til midnight with a few people because of the shortage and had number one on my box. The game I didn't get with my reserve was Frame City Killer because of a delay at the time but now we know they cancelled it. But I did pick up two controllers, two play and charges, Madden, Kameo, Project Gotham Racing and if I can remember I think it was also NBA 2K. It is good to see that someone else goes all out just like I do.

Funny thing. When 360 released GS had a midnight sale. I waited until after work that day, walked in an hour before GS closed and asked for mine. The guy behind the counter laughed his ass off and told me they were sold out, even reserved systems. Turns out, mine was the last one in stock and had been for 10 hours, simply because I reserved it the week they started taking reservations and was guaranteed one from the first wave. Then walked next door to pick up my new HDTV from Circuit City. Got home, passed out, and had an excellent day when I woke up. Thank god for employers who observe Thanksgiving vacation.

However, I could not get my XBOX 360 untill the second shipment arrived.

So on thursday a couple days after the XBOX 360 launch I got a call from EB Games.

Somebody did not pick up there XBOX 360 and they decided to give the console to me instead.

Now I know the idealogy of people on forums is that their fairly wealthy and dedicated to the platforms. But with me I must digress that I am in fact not as generously flexible with my revenue. Just a humble college student.

50$ for PDZ (notice one game)
40$ for 13 month XBL
20$ for Play and Charge (essential!!!)

I've actually had to get COD2 for CHRISTmas, and sold both PDZ and COD2 in order to get GRAW.

You see my point isn't to ask for sympathy but mearly to say that I'm still not an average gamer. When a console launches at 400 or 600 their not for the general market, it's for those on forums. And which ever console to reach a selling point of 200 bucks will win the competition (wii excluded). You people don't share the same allegance to labels as that of everyday Joes or Janes.

This is partly why I don't bother with people like gametime, achira, NJ..., or theMart. Because you represent the extremes of society and your presumptions and dedication are lost in the views of normal people and the price tag.

I hope you know you're still a gamer. If you can or can't afford a system that doesn't mean you don't appreciate what that system could do, thats what a gamer is about. Not these other guys who believe in one company and argue about what their systems are made of and how much it cost. To me that's just a person who wants to brag or isn't convinced that what they purchased is a good system. True gamers are people like you, a person who enjoys the fun factor and quality of a game and just like you I too get rid of a few games just to get that game I want. I already had a few PSPs because one of the PSPs I had was used to help purchase the 360. Sometimes people like true gamers find ways and do what they have to do to get what they want. I do run a business but at the same time I am not rich. I do make enough to get by. EVERY consloe company overhype's their consloes!!!! And PSone and PS2 gave gamers exactly what they wanted, GAMES!!!!! Sony gave us a variety of games in the likes of which we have never seen. They also implemented CD's and DVD formats in the use of games to better improve the products we love. So they overhyped the specs, what company hasn't? The fact is they came through with games which is why Sony has dominated. (my opinion)

It seems like what 360 fans want for Christmas is PS3 to fail.

Do you think living Microsoft without competition (I know there is Nintendo but they have their niche market and wii though innovative is a bit under power when compared to 360) would be good gamers and industry.

If you look at M$ strategy it doesn't have good record if it comes to inventing. M$ is master on improving existing ideas and products that they know already work.
