We tracked down Daniel Mullins, the creator of the wildly popular indie game 'Pony Island', and got him to answer a few pressing questions.
As the wait for Deltarune continues, this writer wanted to offer her readers a collection of similar experiences. Considering Undertale’s beginnings as an Earthbound hack, this piece aims to explore some of what could be considered Undertale’s family — games that also began with RPGMaker, were inspired by Earthbound, share a similar ideology, and games focus on reactive stories. Additionally, this piece hopes to highlight some of the lesser known Undertale-esque works, the ones readers might not immediately find when sifting through Google’s suggestions. As an added bonus, these games are budget-friendly - several of them are even free! Others range from $5-20. My personal favorites are Silent Hill 4, Outlast series, the original Condemned, Amnesia, Resident Evil 2 remake, Clive Barker's Undying, Alien: Isolation, STALKER (not really a horror game, but the few horror elements are highly intense), and Dead Space 2.
I'm not easily frightened, but the games I listed are the ones I remember becoming really stressful and unnerving to me, making me anxious to enter that room, or turn that corner. So they all definitely did their job.
