Super Mario 3 was a good game. Crash was so-so. The BEST game of all time is Halo and Forza. Halo was the first game to bring a movie scifi experience into a game. What a great storyline.

Forza might be tied or a close second. It reinvented the way racers should be to the point where Gran Turismo had to copy some of Forza's elements and change their ways.

pedrof933812d ago

Said no one ever.

" GT5 copied elements from Forza "

GT destroy forza in sales.

I would say that Jak and Daxter trilogy my all time favorite.

fendernow3812d ago

1. Evidence?
2. Even if something sells well doesn't mean its good. Britney Spears has sold a ton of records, I guess she is one of the greatest singers of all times.

Ask anyone with half a brain, Forza>GT series for a ton of reasons. At least you didn't argue about Halo so that was at least smart.

NukaCola3812d ago

The best games I have ever played were Oddworld Abe's Oddysee and Exoddus for the PS1. It's still mt favorite title series and the first truly perfect game I have personally played.

@fendernow
Lay off the elitist additude.

Plate3812d ago

How could I ever forget about Jak and Daxter! These games were ahead of their time when they released. Can't wait for the PS4 version of this game.

DarthZoolu3812d ago

I someone askes you what the best game ever is and you bring up sales, you are not qualified to answer that question. All time best for me is between Fallout2 and Skyrim for single player. Halo2 or Battlefield3 for multiplayer. There is no right or wrong answer because its an opinion question. If some asks what your favorite song is and you say Katy Perry has the most album sales this year, you are a mindless drone for not having the ability to form your own opinion, GTFO.

Cuzzo633812d ago (Edited 3812d ago )

Well im gonna have to disagree also. Forza is not the GOAT racer. Lol. Not by along shot.

Here are mines for possible GOAT.
ZELDA seriee
SUPER METROID snes
MARIO series
Halo CE
Golden Eye n64
Donkey Kong country 2 snes
Grand Turismo 2 or 3 ps2
Resident Evil 2
MGS3
The real DMC and DMC3... awesomeness

Maybe more driving right now

Information Minister3812d ago

@ fendernow - Just out of morbid curiosity, what exactly did GT copy from Forza?

On topic - The "best videogame of all time" will always be a matter of personal preference. What is the best movie of all time? Blade Runner? Gladiator? Titanic? Star Wars? Singin' in the Rain? If you ask 10 different people, you're likely to get 10 different answers. It's the same with games.

Heck, I can't even decide which one is my favorite game of all time... I have a soft spot for Shadow of the Colossus, but that applies to Shenmue as well.

gaffyh3812d ago

I hate to admit it, but this goes to one of the side-scrolling marios. Not that I hate those games, I'm just not a huge fan of them any more, but they are incredibly accessible. Accessible enough for more people to like them.

My personal favourite is probable MGS1, or Maybe Soul Reaver.

mikeslemonade3812d ago (Edited 3812d ago )

It's hard to say which game is the greatest of all time, but it's actually pretty easy to figure out which game is the best for each system. I guess if you lump in the greatest game for each system then it could be simplified to which is the best game of all time. There's just too much criteria to judge.

You guys know that I like to pick sides. But this is one is a little different. It's really hard to look at things objectively and then also look at every criteria possible. From sales, graphics, influence, gameplay, controls, narrative, physics, longevity etc. The hardest criteria to judge is the longevity of the game and how the game holds up over time. How can you really say FF7 or Ocarina of Time were better games than something like a COD4. I know some of you fanatics would say Ocarina or FF7 easy, but looking at it objectively it's not that simple.

There's just no Michael Jordan of video games. Video games are like the NFL. You have all those great QBs and then you have the great players on the other positions like Jerry Rice, Deion Sanders, Lawrence Taylor, and Jim Brown.

And I must say and I've said this before, but COD4 is the best last generation when you look at all facets and criteria. Overall it's just the best game when you at sales, graphics, how it influenced this generation, gameplay, online gameplay, and how it basically made Halo forgettable.

DragonKnight3812d ago (Edited 3812d ago )

@fendernow: Forza wishes it were as good as Gran Turismo. Gran Turismo is Playstation's highest selling franchise selling over 70 million total units since 1997.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

Forza series isn't even close, selling 10 million copies since 2005.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

Interesting to note that Gran Turismo has been around for 16 years and is only on its 6th game whereas Forza has been out for 8 years and is on its 5th. I think we know which of the two is better.

But onto the topic of the story, this is an impossible question to answer given that there are too many variables to consider. Nostalgia, timing, subjective opinions. There is no greatest game of all time, only "currently the greatest game I've ever played" and that would be hard for people to narrow down.

Larry L3812d ago

My list of greatesr games of all time are as follows.......

Super Mario Bros. 3
Zelda: A Link to the Past
Tetris
Super Street Fighter 2 (though I must say 4 may be better)
DOOM - Final DOOM
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!!
The TMNT Arcade Games series and it's home ports
Final Fantasy (basically 1-10.....pick your favorites. Mine are 1,6,7,9 and 10)
Gran Turismo series
SOCOM 1&2

And speaking of SOCOM, I don't know if my memory is better or worse than eveyone else's, but I always read and hear people giving Halo all this credit for revolutionizing and setting the standard for online features and communities not only for future games but also for consoles as a whole. Well I seem to recall SOCOM doing it not only first, but better. I just HATE revisionist history, and it seems like ALL gamers give HALO the credit for what SOCOM did first and better.

trywizardo3811d ago

COD sells better than BF is that make it better ?!?!
beside he is right in the halo part the forza and GT part it doesn't matter to me sim racing is boring but you're way of defending games should be better than "it sells more"
anyhow i think halo is the best one :)

Mainsqueeze3811d ago (Edited 3811d ago )

Dude "it sells more" only works for Sony fanboys when they are defending their exclusives, don't you know that? On topic This is a super hard choice. I loved Morrowind, Ocarina of Time, and Dark Cloud 1 and 2 for the ps2 give me amazing trips down nostalgia lane. I also like alot of new games too like Dark Souls and Bioshock 1. Plus Halo 2 is my favorite mp games of all time easily. Tough decision right there.

schlanz3811d ago

I've had the Jak and Daxter trilogy unopened on my shelf for sooo long now. Backlogs are such a chore..

anyway my favorite games, I pretty much can sum them up as the games I've invested the most time in.

Diablo 2, and Super Smash Bros Melee. Two games that I played for years and years, never really became bored of, and became a veritable God in.

I had to quit D2 multiple times, because I grew uncomfortable with the addiction to it, and I only stopped playing SSBM because I didn't have friends to play with anymore after graduating from college...

mikeslemonade3811d ago (Edited 3811d ago )

I love Socom 2. One of my all time favorite games. And I don't like Halo at all, but you have to give credit where it is due. The community of the game and customization was just better in the general consensus.

And COD4 is better than Battlfield. It sold better and did other things better. I hate how people hate COD because it's a mainstream game and don't give credit for COD4. You're an elitist if you don't think COD4 is one of the greatest games ever made.

Right BF and COD are both shit. Stop saying BF is that good. I'm still waiting for a true next-gen shooter.

Plate3812d ago

Snatcher is THE Best in my most humble opinion. What a classic.

StraightPath3812d ago (Edited 3812d ago )

To be honest saying there is one game of all time is pretty stupid. Why there has been dozens of games spanning different generations and genres.

There simply can not be one game that supersedes all. I think it is more sensible to say the best game in its genre rather then spanning every single genre and saying that is the best game of all time.

I for one have several games that I think were awesome spanning different generations. With many amazing games that came and revolutionised the industry and brought something new it is difficult to just choose one game.

fendernow3812d ago

I will give you some different games that are the best of all time in different eras.

Halo
Halo 4
Forzas

and soon to be Titanfall. Mark my word.
Do they all have something in common a troll might ask? Yes they do.
They are great.

I see some Nintendo games but let's face it, we are all adults here.
Nintendo was fun when you were 6 years old or if you want to play games with your 8 year old nephew and don't want to babysit.

SEGA? LOL. Sega CD. Fail. Sega Saturn. Fail.
Sega Dreamcast. Fail.
Genesis? Ugly color palette games don't suit me well.

Sony? Metal Gear was a bore, more watching than playing.
Their platformers were copycat of Crash Bandicoot.
Though I will say Pa Rappa The Rapper was fun and Jumping Jack Flash.
Fun, not great. There is a difference.

Case closed. End of discussion. And before trolls start giving me disagrees, please back up your attacks with facts, not opinions.

TheFirstClassic3812d ago

"Case closed. End of discussion. And before trolls start giving me disagrees, please back up your attacks with facts, not opinions."

Uh, are you retarded? Your whole comment is an opinion. And if someone disagrees with your opinion, that doesn't make them a troll.

Personally, though I can see halo 1 or 2 being argued, I can't even fathom how someone could view halo 4 and forza as being among the best games of all time. But whatever.

SpideySpeakz3812d ago

fendernow is a salty fanboy with controlling and self-esteem issues. Ain't no way in HELL Halo is the best video game series of all time.
But you know fanboys, they all have a tribal mind, drinking their own kool-aid, and denying reality every chance they get.

Cuzzo633812d ago (Edited 3812d ago )

@ferngully...fendernow
Lmao you have got to be the most biased gaymer ever. Im pro sony but I do kno what a great game is. And im an adult also and I have the balls to say the mario series is GOAT worthy. Zelda is GOAT worthy. The first Halo is GOAT worthy. What you fail to realize is that these games changed the game for its time. Halo CE yes. Halo 4? Hell no. What did it do for the game industry. Nothing.

Mario bros 3. Super Mario World. Mario 64. Game changers
A link to the Past. Ocarina of Time. Game changers
Donkey kong country 1 and 2. Game changers
MetalGear series. Game changer
Gran Turismo. Game changer
Super Metroid. Game changer
Even TLOU. Game changer...
Hell Sonic the Hedgehog. Game changer

What did Forza do that GT didnt do already. Forza still doesn't have weather or night racing. Lmao

What did Halo 4 do that Halo 1 or 2 didnt do. Nothing. Hell do you rember Goldeneye lol. That game alone changed FPS genre.

Titanfall added mechs to a FPS..... Holy shnizit. Gtfo of here

These are my reasons these games are GOAT worthy. Not only were they the best in their time, but they meant something to the gamimg community.

Ooops you have no bubbs. Stop being a fangirl and accept it for what it is....

Cuzzo633812d ago

And to add more flames to my post. COD4 over Halo. Goldeneye over COD4. Did you ever play StarFox. Doom. Mr. Fender(slow) you are wrong in every way

Oh my god. Gran Turismo is the mos revered driving game in the whole industry, stop trolling. And even though I bought my Original Xbox for Halo in no way would I call it the best.

I'm disappoint, the obvious answer is: Super Mario 64. Now that was revolutionary in every meaning of the word and just a great game.

Runner ups for me:

MGS3
Mass Effect 2
The Elder Scrolls III Morrowind

NeoTribe3812d ago

Sorry but doom, duke nukem 3d and goldeneye made more of an impact than halo ever did. Forza??? Nobody cares about forza lol. Especially the new one, which is horrible. Last of us and uncharted destroys everything you mentioned.

MysticStrummer3812d ago

"Ask anyone with half a brain…"

Opinions aren't facts no matter how big a person's brain is.

OT - I'll go with Demon's Souls. The feeling I had playing through that for the first time was like no other game before or since, though Dark Souls was obviously very close.

DragonKnight3812d ago

Demon's Souls! Yes. That game was definitely a game changer no doubt. And I also prefer it to Dark Souls as well, but in small ways that take nothing away from Dark Souls.

JasonKCK3812d ago

I would have to say Pong simply because that's what started it all.

mobijoker3812d ago

Forza-Halo best video game ever???....
Halo first game to bring movie scifi in game???..sarcasm right!!!Ever heard of Deus Ex???.......And saying a racing game is Best ever is a joke...Racing genre has remained least evolved of all genres...Just some new cars and up to date graphics and minor tweaks here and there...no major change there....

If one game I have to choose I would go for Zelda:Ocarina of Time...but Half Life should be a close second....And Doom for bringing brutality which is now known as actions in game.....

frostypants3812d ago (Edited 3812d ago )

Super Mario Bros. The first one. The others were great, but no one who wasn't there can ever understand the awesomeness of that game for its time. The sheer number of hours people poured into it (for years) was insane.

As for modern times, Demon's Souls. That game...holy sh*t. Dark Souls couldn't match the atmosphere.

I'll give an honorary mention to Combat. It was as fun as old-school pre-NES games could get.

DragonKnight3812d ago

Solid choices frostypants. I concur.

mochachino3812d ago

Oh.my.god.

Halo and Forza??? Wow. Someone started playing games at xbox, only played xbox and is too much of an MS fanboy to have an open minded opinion.

Indo3812d ago

Super Mario: Yoshi's Island

Magicite3811d ago

Chrono Cross is the best game of all times (in my oppinion).

awi59513811d ago (Edited 3811d ago )

halo saved the xbox everyone thought it was a joke halo Ce was the game that said holy crap xbox was for real. Every college dorm had 16 player halo lan parties and it was so damn awesome. I miss those days halo 2 dumbed it down so much that my friends never wanted to play again the damage model was like todays call of duty games but bungie just had to be dicks and chase the money of casual noobs. Thats when i changed over to ghost recon and rainbow six and had a blast playing last man standing and only having one life that was damn great.

Azrabain3811d ago

My all time favorite game is an easy choice and it is no other then the greatest game ever made SUPER MARIO 64 for the N64, or I like to call it the Ultra 64! This game blew me away on day one and still does today. Its amazing and to me is worth having a Nintendo 64 alone for. Just so happens that the second greatest game ever would be also on the N64 Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The Nintendo 64 stands in my opinion as the greatest games console of all time and was the last console to use game cartridges so zero loading times and the greatest 4 player multiplayer with friends and family. This system was the first to have analog control with its awesome controller and first to have rumble feedback to make the games more immersive just amazing for its time and has proven itself agaist time! No DLC, no game patches to download, no game installs or waiting at all just gaming bliss! LONG LIVE N64!!!

Other notable AAA games on the N64:

Goldeneye 007
Killer Instinct Gold
Donkey Kong 64
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Super Smash Bros.
Mario Kart 64

Boy I wish Nintendo would have bought Rare back in the day they would have been up there with Nintendo's best in house game developers. microshiit destoyed them in the name of goddambed money!

DarthZoolu3811d ago

ONLY A FANBOY WOULD COME HERE TO SHIT TALK OTHER PEOPLES FAVORITE OR BEST GAME AND TALK ABOUT SALES. PICK YOUR BEST GAME AND MAYBE TELL WHY THEM MOVE ON. IF SOMEONE SAYS CRACKDOWN WAS THE BEST DO YOU REALLY NEEDaa A LONG REPLY SAYING IT ISN'T. GTFOOH

FlyingFoxy3811d ago

Sorry but Halo is most definitely not the best, or anywhere near as matter of fact.

I find Halo very overrated, i played PC games back at the time before Xbox released and the first game didn't do much for me at all. It didn't look that great either, i actually found it somewhat boring. I had way much more fun playing some other FPS games online on my PC.

But in another opinion i thought Crash bandicoot was pretty enjoyable, so i agree with the majority on that one.

Truth3811d ago (Edited 3811d ago )

@fendernow Hahahahahahaaaaaa... Halo and Forza... wait you're serious? Might want to have yourself checked in bro.

PRODUCT_OF_NYC3811d ago (Edited 3811d ago )

@fendernow - Look at all those disagrees you racked up.

My personal favorites of all-time are just my opinions, not facts or the general consensus. When you consider the fact that the original Super Mario Bros. on the NES/Famicon brought back the video game industry from the Video Game Crash of 1983 and the reason why we all still game today, shouldn't that count for strong consideration? All-Time means all generations, not just last gen or Xbox 360. Do you honestly think Halo, Forza, and every other game post 1983 in console history would exist today if it weren't for Nintendo?

The best or closest way to determine the "All-Time Best" video game would be to have a general consensus poll or vote by reputable game sites with reputable critics that have knowledge of video game history and play games themselves. For example, websites like Metacritic, that aggregates reviews of music albums, games, movies, TV shows, DVDs, and formerly, books into 1 convenient score or metascore. Metacritic converts each critic review into a percentage which then equates to any number from 0 to 100. This site factors critic scores from IGN,GameSpot, GameTrailers, etc. It even has user scores next to the critic scores and you can check out every critic or website that influenced the final metascore. On the Metacritic website try clicking Games -> High Scores -> All -> All Time. To see what results you get.

Another (more tedious) way would be to google "Best or Greatest Video Game of All Time" and count which game appeared at the number one spots most often. Regardless of whether you agree with what you find or not these are the closest and most objective ways to reaching a consensus.

Consensus may be defined professionally as an acceptable resolution, one that can be supported, even if not the "favourite" of each individual.

ob·jec·tive
adjective: objective
(of a person or their judgment) not influenced by personal feelings or opinions in considering and representing facts. Free of bias.

MusicSurfer3811d ago

This is a difficult question to answer because each generation brought on a boon of oohs and awes that made you a gamer believer all over again.

PS1 --- Warhawk.
XBOX - HALO
PS2 -- GTA
PS3 -- Drakes and Resistance FOM.
XBOX 360 Halo, Kameo
PS4 - For me -- KZ - Love it. Knack is fun as well
Xbox one - dont have it but friend has it - Dead Rising is a blast.

Zelda is another great game. Still can remember as a kid sitting down to play the game for the first time on NES.

TheFirstClassic3812d ago

I would argue that Zelda is the best video game series ever made. Never played a series where two games in it could feel so similar but so entirely different at the same time.

wonderfulmonkeyman3812d ago

No, Faces of Evil and Zelda's Adventure were abortions.
Zelda 2 was the first foray of the series into a truly RPG-like experience, and it also marked the first instance of the series becoming unfairly difficult at certain points.

TheFirstClassic3811d ago

Zelda 2 was a great game that was hated because it strayed away from the formula put in place by the original. It may rank low on the list of zelda games, but its still a great game.

I would have to say the games that pushed the imagination. That means I am going towards the platformers Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper, Spyro, Crash, Sonic and Mario. All great titles in m opinion.

Maldread3812d ago (Edited 3812d ago )

MGS1 and FF7 for me.

I`ve never played any games that`s so mindblowingly great as those, but i could never choose which one`s the best.

MGS1 was a new standard for how mature videogames had gotten in terms of telling a fantastic and movie like story. Snake is truely one of the coolest and most badass characters around, and facing a huge cast of extremely awesome bosses to beat as well. I remember being blown out of my mind when battling Psycho Mantis. Changing controller ports indeed :)

The story itself being a new standard for videogames, with it`s many twists and turns. More human like AI and making you think about if you was truely just a killing machine, was unlike anything i had played at the time.

And the music. Ohh the music. Main theme and The best is yet to come. Let me say no more :) http://www.youtube.com/watc...

FF7 fantastic visuals in the opening scene is just a beginning of a long and epic journey ahead. And a game i think every PS3-fan was hoping of getting to play again on PS3.

The reason for it is simple. A deep and suspenseful mystery story from beginning to end with a unprecendented level of variation and fun in it, that many modern RPG`s isn`t anywhere near of achieving.

Just spending time (and gil) at Gold Saucer, breathing Chocobos, or finding all the secret stuff, is almost a game in itself.

Everything from the music to the materia system is just pure win in FF7 :) http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Not sure if i want a remake with the state SE is in now, but everyone should play FF7 at some point in their lives to see the magic for themselves ;)

Microsoft Closes Redfall Developer Arkane Austin, Hi-Fi Rush Developer Tango Gameworks, and More

Microsoft has closed a number of Bethesda studios, including Redfall maker Arkane Austin, Hi-Fi Rush developer Tango Gameworks, and more in devastating cuts at Bethesda, IGN can confirm.

Moegooner21h ago(Edited 21h ago)

Hi-Fi Rush studio??? Seriously?? Goes to show quality matters lil to MS.

Worst gen ever. All big 3 battling are for who sucks the most. They just keep one upping one another.

-Foxtrot21h ago

This does feel like a “quick Sony is getting shit on for Helldivers, let’s announce it now to minimise impact”

thesoftware73020h ago

That is silly. Let's say there is some weird conspiracy. This announcement would effectively take ALL the attention away from the HD2 situation, especially since there is no longer an HD2 situation. I don't think anything will minimize this impact.

Tacoboto20h ago

... so they announce it on a Tuesday? 36 hours after Sony cleared up everything?

You people care more about the next conspiracy than anything else.

Nevermind that Sony followed the golden rule of minimizing impact by announcing horrible news on a Friday.

Eonjay20h ago

The constant weekly weird Sony drama is part of the industry's problem. Everyone else feels they can get away with murder. Also, what is the point of spending all that money if you just start shutting studios down. And... Redfall wasn't Arkane's fought. Microsoft new the shape the game was in but needed something for GamePass after a whole year of no releases into the service. Them taking it out on Arkane seems really disingenuous and distasteful. And WTF did Tango do? Didn't Todd just release a statement saying how he would never retire. Fire his ass.

romulus2320h ago

Well if that was the reason for the timing it didn't work.

darthv7220h ago

wow... i did not have them closing Tango and Arkane Austin on my bingo card.

Hofstaderman19h ago(Edited 19h ago)

Yes it does. Arkane Austin I can understand but Tango Gameworks made an excellent game in Hi Fi Rush.
On review, it want really all on Austin for Redfall and its failure, they were forced to make a multiplayer games when their expertise was always single player driven first person games.

-Foxtrot19h ago

Guys I’m not being all that serious…relax

Outside_ofthe_Box18h ago(Edited 18h ago)

"I don't think anything will minimize this impact."

It already has. Notice your comment(or lack there of) vs HD2.

On another note, I would like to see Microsoft buy more studios and do more shadows drops on subscription services like they did Hi-Fi Rush. It's great for the industry I was told by people on here.

Zeref17h ago(Edited 17h ago)

I'm pretty sure that's exactly how it works. Same thing with layoffs. All of a sudden everyone has layoffs around the same time

Cacabunga15h ago

MS will always make it to amaze me by showing the worse version of themselves every single time..

peppeaccardo15h ago

MS proving to the world that ttheir leadership cannot drive success from these new acquisitions. They have ran the numbers and they have realized that long term, without a clear direction from the motehrship, these are a loss for the company hence they need to be cut. I might be wrong but I am absolutelly sure that if these developers would have not been purchased by Microsoft they would be still on business. A shame ...

Einhander197220h ago(Edited 20h ago)

10/10 deflection, the ol' Sony too deflect...

Let's not discuss the fact that PlayStations struggles have largely been caused by the fact that game pass has reshaped how consumers spend causing them to spend less as they play what is on subscriptions and don't buy games as much because they either have become subscription gamers or they fear the game will come to a subscription so they don't buy things.

And it's not just PlayStation, the whole industry has been effected, many big studios are struggling across the board to match sales targets from pre-game pass releases which is especially apparent in things like sequels.

Heck the best example was Microsoft's own Starfield which should have easily blasted past 10m sales by the end of 2023 going by sales of similar Bethesda games yet was only able to achieve 3m which of course was almost entirely on Steam.

Moegooner20h ago

Or maybe it's because Sony hasn't released multiple worthwhile SP games like they normally do each gen and the ones they did released actually sold well.

Layoffs aren't because studios are struggling, but because major publishers want to maximise profit gains.

Profchaos20h ago(Edited 20h ago)

Absolutely it's a service that's changed the way we view and consume games overall for the worse games have little value when they are part of a sub and become disposable doubly so if they are a day 1 freebie often it's the kiss of death for a game to be day 1 on gamepass as PlayStation players look at it like why do I have to pay 60 dollars for back 4 blood, payday 3 or outriders it'll be on PS plus soon enough and funny enough those games always fail to meet expectations sales are poor and longevity is poor.

When I see a game get a day 1 tag outside of first party my first thought is always something is wrong with it and it can't stand on its own feet so the publisher has made a deal to recoup development cost.

Even first party games have dropped in quality noticeably so since gamepass with gears 5 being the only good release I can think of since gamepass started

Petebloodyonion19h ago

Wasn't aware that Gamepass is available on PlayStation.
Or are you telling us that a service from a console lacking in sales is so great that it affects the morale and buying habits of ppl lacking access to the service?

Also pretty sure that saying all of them competing for who sucks means the whole industry and not just Sony and MS.

Nitrowolf220h ago(Edited 20h ago)

This is what people online want. They just don't know or understand it. So many have warned about consolidation, and exactly what they have fear has been happening

This isn't the end, expect more bought out studios to be closed in the next few years

Hofstaderman19h ago

Spot on. All in the name "growth" to appease investors and shareholders. Can't sustain the lie though...it will always implode as illustrated by these closures. Applies to MS and Embracer.

TiredGamer13h ago(Edited 13h ago)

This. ^

Publishers are slowly mitigating all development risk since every new big/medium budget game has become too big to fail. Games are too expensive to make and the profitability for titles rests on a hair’s edge. When you need to sell 5 million copies of a game to be profitable, you know that we’ve turned a new page in gaming. The real victims here are the smaller studios/games that bring so much character and variety to the industry, like with Hi-Fi Rush.

It looks to me that Hi-Fi Rush did not fulfill financial expectations for moving the GamePass needle, and the sales from the PlayStation port experiment did not measure up either. So it gets the boot.

Sad day and era for gaming.

notachance10h ago

yeah smaller ABK studios like Toys For Bob are now in dangers

notachance19h ago

I just don’t know how the hell a company that can spend $67b to purchase a publisher decided that it’s okay to close the studio that produces their best game last year.

Whoever the higher up there that decides this is completely out of touch of how the game industry works, the damn xbox division as a whole would’ve been closed already if they weren’t sustained by other MS divisions.

shinoff218319h ago

I got in an argument with someone on reddit and they weren't haven't that Xbox isn't propped up by other divisions argument. They swore up and down that Xbox was pulling its own weight. I just stopped after a couple back and forths

TiredGamer13h ago

Didn’t move the GamePass needle and the PlayStation port couldn’t save the return on investment….

dumahim19h ago

So this is what happens when you're pleased with the sales and investing in the studio? Good guy Phil at it again.

Sonic188118h ago(Edited 18h ago)

From Aaron Greenburg:

"Hi-Fi RUSH was a break out hit for us and our players in all key measurements and expectations. We couldn’t be happier with what the team at Tango Gameworks delivered with this surprise release."

😂😂😂 🤥🤥

Lightning7718h ago(Edited 18h ago)

Once again MS creates their own problems and they create their own animosity. Idc about their shitty excuse and "reasons" they're a incompetent company, plus all their Xbox fanboy influencers are dwindling I noticed. How many excuses can you make for a company like MS? Consoles are down and they're losing their own fanboy influencers also. That's all they had to cheer lead them now they're leaving them. Pretty nobody will be on MS dude no matter if they (if they ever but I doubt it) get their act together.

Trashy ass ppl and company....

If they go under eventual it's because of their own doing nobody else's.

porkChop15h ago

Yeah overall this gen is pretty shit. Everyone is making horrible decisions, great devs are getting either gutted or entirely shut down regardless of quality or success, very little in the way of innovative games, etc. This industry needs to see some drastic changes.

badz1495h ago

where are all the cheerleaders for MS acquisitions amid all these?? you guys happy now? this will not be the end of it, maybe just the beginning!

Tango Gameworks and Arkane?

RaidenBlack20h ago

Arkane Austin (Prey developer)
Not Arkane Lyon ( Dishonored developer)

Crows9020h ago

Prey was fantastic. Red fall was shit because they were forced to do shit they didn't want to make.

Atkane Lyon did death loop I believe....I hated that one.

shinoff218319h ago

I personally liked prey more.

RaidenBlack19h ago

@shinoff2183
Because Prey was creative and different
Other than the live service Redfall, all other single-player Arkane projects have been creative and interesting

Tankbusta4019h ago

@Crows90

So just because people don't want to do something in life...bad quality is excused? Look what happened over that bad quality? no more studio

Will be more soon, I've said it before I can't see MS keeping Bethesda. I think they'll strip it's IPs and slowly close everything, it's what they do.

VariantAEC18h ago

No one wants to admit it, but yeah MS has a long history of pillaging other smaller corporations for IP and dispensing with everything else.

Zeref17h ago

That doesn't make any sense lol. How would they make money from these IP'S with no developers?

MrDead16h ago(Edited 16h ago)

@Zeref
"That doesn't make any sense lol. How would they make money from these IP'S with no developers?"

MS don't care about the studios, they want the IP's. They'll keep the big ones in house, the game engines they run on and licence the rest. Stacks of cash to be made from licensing IP's ...or just sit on them so no one else can use them.

blackblades13h ago

@Zeref silly fool, buy them for the IP have there other studios make the games using the IP names to sell them. We all know having a popular franchise name can sell

Well xbox fans you got what you asked for... and honestly deserved...

It was so easily predictable that game pass was never going to be able to support all these studios.

If Microsoft can't win they are going to burn it all to the ground...

Countdown to Phil Spencer telling us "it's better for the gamers this way" yet again.

Barlos19h ago

Agree but gamers didn't ask for people to be out of work.

VenomUK18h ago(Edited 18h ago)

@Barlos They indirectly did. Every person who made a wish list of who Microsoft should buy next and were sending tweets to Phil Spencer and Xbox with proposed studios, played a part.

The saddest part is the studios were closed because of the underperformance of their last games, and if they had been given a chance then their next games could’ve been great and succeeded. But it is the same old Phil Spencer Microsoft problem which is not giving them a chance, and that’s why he is not able to manage game studios.

VariantAEC18h ago

Yeah they did. Just because they refused to see what everyone with a brain was telling them doesn't mean they didn't know. They were told, they should've put up a fight and they didn't. This is the result. But who knows even if MS' fans weren't such boot-lickers, MS could've carried this out against their fans wishes anyway. Unfortunately, we have the hardcore MS defense bots running to deflect from any bad news and maybe, just maybe, MS felt empowered to do more damage as a result of their fans cheering this all on.

anast17h ago

They sold themselves out. Once people buy you they can do what they want. None of this should have been a surprise. When companies get bought out, they eventually get dismantled.

shinoff218319h ago

Xbox fans were to busy daydreaming of Ms curbstopping Sony they didn't look at the big picture.

Einhander197219h ago

Not disagreeing at all.

I want to add that from the day Microsoft announced game pass, before they even started buying up studios it was obvious that game pass wasn't going to be able to support itself.

It was so dumb that they doubled down on it by spending 100B on a service they knew only existed through subsidization.

They should have realized there was no way that adding massively more costs on a subscription they were subsidizing was certain to fail. Especially after seeing how it had devastated sales across the platform as a whole.

Heck by the time this generation started during covid when the console sales were similar PlayStation was already outselling xbox on multiplatform games 8:1 yet they still doubled down on it.

19h ago
Relientk7721h ago

This is beyond wrong. Like wtf!? Especially Tango Gameworks with Hi-Fi Rush. I've heard nothing but good things about that game. Just because Arkane Austin screwed up one game release doesn't mean you need to close them. It sounds like they were forced to do a multiplayer game when they're a single player studio. They could have made a Prey 2 or some other game next.

Just wow awful news.

Einhander197220h ago

Apparently PlayStation owners didn't buy enough copies of Hi-Fi Rush...

romulus2320h ago

"Xbox says Hi-Fi Rush was a success "in all key measurements" amid rumors of poor sales. Following rumors that Tango Gameworks' Hi-Fish Rush didn't meet sales expectations, Xbox marketing VP Aaron Greenburg is defending the "break out hit" as a success by all metrics."

According to Aaron Greenburg it was a success so they shouldn't have even needed PlayStation owners to buy it. That being said, I bought it and really enjoyed it, it's a great game. Shame MS closed them down.

RpgSama20h ago

@Romulus23

All lies by the Green Bug, that just means that a lot of people fired bullets or whatever in the game, that's the key measurements they care to share.

Tango did NOT deserve to be closed down, they have not released a single bad game.

Crows9020h ago

That's usually what happens when you don't release it at the same time as other platforms....same thing happened with tomb raider reboot sequel. MS got exclusivity for a year and then when it came to PlayStation it barely sold. Nobody cared anymore.

shinoff218319h ago

Still waiting on the physical release pre order window

VariantAEC18h ago

Well... I did my part. Hi-Fi Rush is a good game, but I don't think its MS' style. We don't really know how well it did or didn't perform by the numbers or whether it broke even. This could just be another MS blunder.

Elda17h ago

Exactly. MS purchasing a 3rd party studio & keeping games off of other platforms probably hurt them in the long run, then finally putting Hi Fi Rush on PS which in turn PS fans probably didn't care to buy & support Hi Fi Rush after a year later of release. Hi Fi Rush was released on Gamepass so it probably never really made any money selling solely.

Eonjay16h ago

@romulus23

Let's hope it didn't sell well because that would make this worse. Also I could have sworn I read an article about their next game in the works.

Seraphim15h ago(Edited 14h ago)

I was wondering if that played any part considering the timing, though, XB claimed the game to be a success last year only on XB & PC. Regardless MS f'd up there too. They shadow dropped HiFi on XB/PC last year at the perfect time. This year when they released on PS not only had the hype died, but there were so many solid games available the first 3 months of this year to play.

I almost bought it on PC last year, but now that it dropped on PS I just have far too many games to play to bother...

If MS needs PS and even Switch sales they need a better strategy. At the very least a release date where players are more inticed to buy said game. The problem is always going to be that if they want exclusives the hype for these games will be dead a year later. The exceptions might be some of their heavy hitters.... 2 cents

Angyobangyo1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

PS and PC owners probably bought more copies that Xbox owners.

I can only imagine the little amount of revenue both games generated, sent straight to gamepass and excluded from the largest current gen console userbase. Not to say both games would have done well if they were on PS5 too, but you heavily damage to a games revenue when you put it on a stagnating sub service for a poorly selling console, can't really see people going out in droves to sub to GP to play this.

shinoff218319h ago

Gamepass subs(most of Xbox players) don't buy games all like that so it's not sustainable. It's reality.

RaidenBlack20h ago

Yea Austin made one of the most creative game of last gen with Prey and were forced to take risk with Redfall and now the whole studio is being closed.

Aphrodia20h ago

Yes, that Tango gameworks/ Hi-Fi closure was an eye opener for me as well. Neither played it nor was interested in it myself but all I heard was everyone acting like it was the second coming of guitar hero or something.

I don't know what else to say other than modern gaming is an overwhelming sea of mediocrity and there's not enough voices of reason speaking up and saying that most games made these days are just not very good.

shinoff218319h ago

Your playing the wrong games then. There's always been shovelware type games. Going back to wii, snes, nes, ps1 Xbox og. That's a bs blanket statement. As an older gamer since atari days I'd personally say this is a great time. If you can't find anything to play. That's on you

With all that said in no way or form am I speaking of multi-player games, gacha, or whatever. I'm strictly speaking on single player games.

Aphrodia17h ago

you are hilarious. trying to validate your comment by excluding over half of the games out there today. Pathetic man.

Neonridr19h ago

I'm more devastated at the loss of The Evil Within.

Chevalier8h ago

Wait I was told Xbox had great engagement numbers?! Some Xbox fans said they bought games when I told them Xbox customers don't buy games?

So Xbox bought studios to keep games off other platforms and forgot they conditioned Xbox customers to not buy games. Whoops.

So anyone else think Outer World's 2 dies 🤔? I'm thinking a small game losing out on Nintendo and Playstation gamers buying will kill this IP. But it's okay Xbox fans can get more COD! Halo, Gears and Forza! Woot that's a 'win'. Yay Gamepass FTW

Eonjay20h ago

By the end of the day IGN will be talking about how this is right for the industry. Don't worry, Microsoft's PR is making the call now.

RpgSama20h ago

Tango did NOT deserve to be closed down, they have not released a single bad game, and I'm sure Arkhane failed just because they were both rushed and pressured into making a GaaS game they had no experience in doing and no support to get it completed out of the gate.

PrinceOfAnger20h ago

Not a big deal only hi fi rush was good

Sony has closed
Manchester studio
Japan studio
Pixel opus
London studio
Ready At Dawn ...

RupeeHoarder20h ago

The difference being Sony has a large group of other studios that have done something positive. Microsoft just closed the studio to the only good game they released in the past year (Hi-Fi Rush).

CrashMania20h ago

They all suck as well of course. But MS spent 10s of billions on these publishers for mass consolidation, every made a song and dance about how MS would save them, using their endless Windows, 365 and Azure money to keep them open forever and how Phil was some hero.

Nothing is safe unless it makes money, even for MS.

romulus2320h ago

It is a big deal.

Microsoft has closed
Fasa Studios
Digital Anvil
Ensemble
Lionhead Studios
Press Play
Arkane Austin
Tango Gameworks

Einhander197220h ago(Edited 20h ago)

Wow how far back do you want to go back.

Lionhead Studios
Aces Game Studio
BigPark
Carbonated Game
Digital Anvil
Ensemble Studios
FASA Studio
Good Science Studio
Hired Gun
Microsoft Studios Japan
Microsoft Studios Victoria
Team Dakota
Xbox Entertainment Studios
Xbox Live Productions
Lift London
Access Software
Salt Lake Games Studio
Twisted Pixel Games
WingNut Interactive

And more before this, this was just their cuts during xbone era that Phil cut while he was at the head.

And some of those PlayStation studios were merged not closed, most of the UK studios were folded into each other.

Japan Studio was renamed to Asobi not closed, aAsobi was an internal team of Japan Studio the "closure" the press misinformed people about was more or less a name change, the studio is in the same building and when the change happened less than 5 people mostly leadership positions chose to leave the studio to form Bokeh Studio, which still works closely with Sony.

And even if your deflection stood on it's own, Microsoft spent 3 Billion 3 years ago almost to the date to buy Zenimax and has already closed 2 of it's biggest studios and decimated Zenimax's support studio structure.

It's no wonder Todd Howard was talking about "more frequent releases" and letting other studios make their IP's games. The days of big budget huge Bethesda games is over...

In fact sadly Microsoft has ushered in the end of big budget gaming as we know it with their obviously unsustainable subscription industry change.

And I feel fully confident that this isn't the end of studio closures from these recently purchased studios.

Abnor_Mal20h ago

Ready At Dawn was never a Sony owned studio, and only made a few smaller God of War games and a Jax and Daxter spin off, and of course The Order1866.

They are currently owned by OcUlus Studios.

MrDead20h ago

How many times has MS fired Bethesda staff since they purchased it? I think it's been three rounds so far

BehindTheRows20h ago

Deflection is the finest form of delusion.

shinoff218319h ago

London studio what have they made recently. Really the worst one was Japan studio. That sucked.

In reality though your deflecting. The fact of the matter is Ms just closed the studio that made their highest rated game in years. That's insane.

Hofstaderman19h ago

Also many of those staff were absorbed into other studios.

VariantAEC18h ago(Edited 18h ago)

Ready At Dawn was never a PS first party studio.
Manchester was closed and it was proposed that London should be closed, but their website is still up with no news about it being closed on their official site anywhere. So it's possible that the proposed closure just did not happen to get fufilled. Meaning London Studio *MIGHT* still be open running lean.

Edit: Japan Studio was closed with some staff making up the new Asobi Team Studio who's first title was the PS5 pack-in game "Astro's Playroom." Pixel Opus was closed and not replaced or spun-off their only games were Entwined and Concrete Genie they also helped publish Journey according to Wikipedia.

Chevalier8h ago

More and more people lose jobs but the people at the top stay the same. Hardware sales tank despite billions and billions spent. The math is plain and simple.

Sonic188119h ago(Edited 19h ago)

I'm still trying to figure out what was the real reason to acquire Bethesda for millions or Billions of dollars if you're closing down studios 🤔 What were their true intentions 🤔 I mean do Microsoft really want to be a third-party publisher? It sounds like they're confused.with their future in gaming

VariantAEC18h ago

@Sonic1881
To rape each studio for their sweet succulent ultra-valuable IP. This is Microsoft's favorite past-time.

How Many More Victims, Like Garry's Mod, Will Nintendo's Hurtful Crusade Create?

Hanzala from eXputer: "As Nintendo takes out 20 years' worth of stuff from Garry's Mod, I watch in shock, thinking why it continues to hurt and discourage its fans."

RiseNShine4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

The irony that some of the most disgusting business practices come from companies like Disney or Nintendo, i can't even begin to understand what terrible damage was Garrys Mod making to Nintendo bottom line, imho they're getting pretty nervous about where they're heading in the future, handhelds are no longer something exclusive to Nintendo, from Steam Deck to many others, now you can play the latest games and pay a fraction of the price on Steam sales, so it's up to their exclusives, which just on their own would make hard to justify purchasing a closed overpriced hardware with outrageous price policies (Super Mario Odyssey is still 60 euro 6 years later!), and as a home console they're always underperforming compared to Sony or Xbox.

gold_drake3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

i cam guarantee you, that their exclusives alone is what drives switch sales. they sell in the 10s of millions of copies.

nintendo created their franchises to be sort of nostalgia driven, exclusive only on nintendo.

people will always buy the pkmn games as they always bring in new younger fans amd is family friendly

mario kart, the same thing, mario games in general.

zelda games are system sellers. animal crossing for the casual gamers.

nintendo doesnt need third vame devs essentially. they made sure with the switch and the limitations that they looked more to pc ps and xbox.

its sad, but nintendo is more than fine with what they're doing. they positioned themselves to appeal to the more casual gamers.

but to your point, im not sure why they're doing this rly.

Inverno3d ago

Look at how they handled Nintendo games being streamed or uploaded on YouTube in the past. They killed Yuzu and Citra even when they had nothing to do with ToTK being leaked, not to mention it was basically unplayable on emulation the week it was leaked. Smash Bros tournament, that was fairly recent. They shut down their online services without any care for purchases made. I bought a switch after skipping their last 2 consoles and handhelds but I don't plan on buying anything Nintendo in the future. They take things to the extremes, they legitimately hate their fans. They're honestly right up there with the likes of Acti, EA, and Ubi, only difference is that they disguise themselves as being family friendly all the while being shady.

The problem with bigger devices is playing them on your side in bed, Vita and before that was fine. Since the Switch you gotta have a gooseneck holder & controllers detached so you can lie down holding them, or your arm will quickly get tired.

A Xbox version of Logitech G-Cloud?
I mean, why bother? Not like the G cloud is flying off shelves and what would Xbox add to make it better?
They're surely not going to create bespoke architecture here and there are already a few Windows handhelds out there. I have little confidence in their ability to put together an attractive UI in the way Steam did. So I doubt anything will come from this.

KicksnSnares7d ago

Day One buy for me if they'll make a dedicated handheld device.

PassNextquestion7d ago

I wonder if Microsoft will perform better in Japan if they do actually make a handheld since everyone says handheld and mobile are king over there.

TiredGamer7d ago

This looks like the future of the game industry... all three platforms with a handheld option.

I wonder if the Playstation Portal is a technology test-bed/prototype for a future Playstation handheld?

rlow17d ago (Edited 7d ago )

It’s a possibility but I can’t help but think would that be the best way to go about it? Though it would give you data on how much it is used and game type. It’s still not a true portable device and so people approach it differently. I think that data on phones, tablets, and of course the competition would give a better indication.

But I really think if Sony is considering a new PSP that could play ps5 games, now would be the time to dive in. Honestly, if they do this, it would be huge.

Traecy7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

Doubt if Sony PS wants to support a new handheld with first party games. Something they lacked with the Vita. What they should do is have a handheld that is like the PS Portal which can play all games but play those games on the go as well as at home. Something like that is a better investment.

TiredGamer7d ago

Agreed that you will probably never see a separate line of games specifically for the handheld (a la PSP or PSVita). The modern economics and expectations of game development make that cost prohibitive. What makes more sense is if the full-fat game on PS5 or PS6 has a special "handheld" profile that is automatically optimized for the lower spec handheld. There would be some significant compromises compared to the bigger console variant, but it would be the same game overall and would only require a single purchase.... somewhat what the Switch does with a lower resolution when playing handheld versus docked.
