Valve Dev: “Calling Games Industry Sexist Is A Major Disservice To Developers”

In recent years the video games industry has been dogged by accusations that it is too male-dominated and even sexist – but top Valve animator Christine Phelan has little time for such talk.

Nice to see a story not calling the industry sexist for once!

bubblebeam4166d ago (Edited 4166d ago )

Sexism only works 1 way, everyone knows that. Sucks to be a male.

Example: Steve Gibbons tweeted: "Libs are led by a gutless douchebag and a narcissistic bimbo..."

This happened in Australia like a day or 2 ago, where a MAN criticised a MAN (gutless douchebag) and a WOMAN (narcissistic bimbo). He was made to apologise to the woman, but no-one said anything about what he said to the man (Tony Abbott).

It is pure double standard bulls**t. People need to grow the F**k up and stop acting like they are a victim, in some cruel male dominated world.

So what, a lot of nurses are female, same with hairdressers? Do you see men complaining all the time? NO!

I'm not saying it should be allowed to happen, just that it works both ways. Too bad 1 gender doesn't see that.

taquito4166d ago (Edited 4166d ago )

cops, carpenters, electricians, neurosurgeons, nuclear physicists, firemen, garbage men, the military, archietects, lawyers, boat captins, and many, many more are all male dominated industries

so what, more men apply for those jobs and are qualified for those jobs, if the market was flooded with qualified and willing women for those jobs, there would be more women in them, its simple, same with the game industry

4166d ago
Hufandpuf4166d ago

No. Just saying that the lack of women applying for developer jobs doesn't mean that that's the reason why there are so little of them. Have you heard of selective applications?

I don't get it, people just seem to think that if you brush issues under the rug, it won't be a problem which is certainly not the case. To even think that not enough women are applying for game job is absurd btw. And I don't think gamers even realize how many of their favorite games had female devs that were a part of making the game.

To me it seems as though gamers are narrow sighted. "Because it happens to someone else, it doesn't matter to me". I don't like "hand holding" or "whining" as much as the next guy but to just sweep issues under the rug and say that "women should not take blatant sexism to heart and maybe they will like their job" is just immature, and THAT DEFINITELY SHOWS HOW FAR THE GAMING INDUSTRY AND IT'S COMMUNITY IS FROM BECOMING AS RESPECTED AND REGARDED AMONG OTHER MEDIUMS SUCH AS MUSIC AND FILM.

No it is not as simple as applying for a job because I know many minorities (blacks, Hispanics) that don't even get an interview even though they are qualified for the position, and not JUST in the game industry but even jobs that many would take for granted.

This is the plague of the industry and I think this kindergarten way of thinking should be eradicated.

MAYBE THIS WAY WE COULD GET MORE VARIETY IN OUR GAMES RATHER THAN MILITARY SHOOTER # 432, or ALIENS INVADE #6304

“At the end of the day I am the work I produce, not a pair of boobs,”

Lmao I'm sorry but you will always be a pair of boobs, that's the way it is. Now show them to me pls or I will slap you

I am a software developer. I have a degree in Computer Science and in my college class, there were about five females and about 30 males. I am from Ireland and a high grade in maths in the leaving certificate (exams at the end of high school) is a requirement for a place in a good Computer Science course in University. Now of course women are no worse than men at maths but they just don't have the same interest. In the higher level maths class in high school, it was also predominantly male. Women seem to be more interested in areas such as medicine, teaching, nursing and business. It is unfortunate but fact. Actually due to such a shortage of female software developers, companies are crying out for them, including those in the games industry. Now I wouldn't call that sexism.

bubblebeam4166d ago

I mean no offense, but I would have thought that someone who is in college and as educated as you would have more than 1 bubble.

Team Fortress: Source 2 and Portal 64 Fan Projects Shut Down by Valve Takedowns

Fan projects Team Fortress: Source 2 and Portal 64 have shut down after Valve intervened in their development.

-Foxtrot106d ago

First they open Steam up to more AI, now they are shutting down fan projects when at one time they used to support or even give the fans jobs.

Wonder what's going on with Valve at the minute.

rlow1106d ago

@Foxtrot
It’s called money plain and simple.

JEECE105d ago

I mean, that might explain the Team Fortress 2 thing, because Valve might bring that to Source 2 (though I'm not sure I'd bet on that), but I can't see how Portal 64 hurts them. If anything, it's more attention to the Portal and therefore Valve/Steam.

Giblet_Head105d ago (Edited 105d ago )

There's potential that Valve had already planned to bring Source 2 to TF2 officially after Counter Strike 2. It's been getting some renewed attention lately.

Inverno105d ago

You got Nintendo to thank for Portal64 being taken down. As for TF2, most likely it's due to the probability of Valve working on a source 2 port themselves. It's sucks but Nintendo are the biggest pricks in the business and not letting this drag out into a huge court drama is the best decision.

Valve Opens the Floodgates to Allow More AI Based Games on Steam

Valve has updated its stance on AI games on the Steam storefront, allowing creators to publish AI-created games.

Droppedez106d ago

AI is just another form of slavery for our computer brethren.

Barlos106d ago (Edited 106d ago )

Hell no. I want games that have been made by creative minds who have a passion for their craft, not a bot with a penchant for plagiarism.

BrainSyphoned105d ago (Edited 105d ago )

So instead of paying for an engine and assets to create a game they are paying for an engine and assets to create a game.

Valve Tells Players To Stop Inhaling Steam Deck Vent Fumes

Valve has officially warned against inhaling the Steam Deck vent fumes in an official response due to potential health hazards.

gold_drake132d ago

my god, people are so dumb these days.

shinoff2183132d ago

I read the headline to my girl and she even reacted wtf is wrong with people. People wild

Notellin129d ago

I feel bad for her that she can't read and needs you to do it for her. Keep your head up!

shinoff2183129d ago

Notellin, I've been teaching her 😘

Jin_Sakai130d ago (Edited 130d ago )

This generation is about dumb as it gets.

frostypants130d ago

Huffing things isn't new to be fair.

SavageFlamingo130d ago

This has nothing to do with generations. It’s not a stupid challenge or anything. People just happened to smell it while they were playing. The steam deck exhaust is easy to smell without even trying. Just playing it you’ll smell it in the air around you.

Felix_Argyle_Catbro130d ago

"tHiS gEErAtIoN"
It's every generation, today you just see it more clearly thanks to internet.

k2d130d ago

To be fair, I loved the smell of glue, gas and certain plastics as a kid (new disc cartridges/new hardware, anyone?)

Si-Fly129d ago

Instruction manuals for me, best smell ever 😂

crazyCoconuts130d ago

I actually take a whiff of it once in a while, it's funny that it smells so good lol

DarXyde130d ago

Tide pod fiasco all over again

Felix_Argyle_Catbro130d ago

"tHeSe DaYs"
People have been just as dumb in the past, you just see it clearly now thanks to the internet.

gold_drake130d ago

thanks for that .. insight. ha.

rlow1129d ago

Well good thing about dumb people, they play an important part in human history. How else do we know which plants, animals and foods ar dangerous? Dumb people! They pay the price so the rest of us don’t have to. Lol

FinalFantasyFanatic129d ago

Honestly, I'm not even surprised considering some of the people I come across these days, inhaling fumes would explain a lot of things.

Wow people will huff anything nowadays some people just have way too much time on their hands.

Abnor_Mal130d ago (Edited 130d ago )

Another reason to love the PlayStation Portal, no chance of breathing in noxious vapors.

Get a Steam Deck they said, to which I reply, what are you high?

KwietStorm_BLM130d ago

Were you high when you typed this?

Abnor_Mal130d ago

Sorry bud no Steam Deck here.

130d ago
FinalFantasyFanatic129d ago (Edited 129d ago )

Even the Steam Deck does streaming better than the Portal (they portal is capped for streaming for some reason, whereas the Steam Deck isn't).

Neonridr129d ago

imagine pretending a glorified streaming device is better than a stand alone unit that can also, stream.

Stand by for the 'gaming kills' articles.
Que Halloween movie theme.

Nucleux130d ago

What does it smell/taste like?

Barlos130d ago

Better than the Switch cartridges is my guess.

Just to be clear, I've never licked a Switch cartridge, nor have I inhaled my deck's fumes.

Profchaos130d ago

Same never licked a switch cart I've always been worried more about where it's been than the taste but

Fluke_Skywalker130d ago

It smells good, that's the problem lol. When I first turned mine on I noticed it 😅
Better stop sniffing it then.

Barlos130d ago

I've had my deck for over a year, I've never been compelled to put my nose near the vent for a good lungful 😂

crazyCoconuts130d ago

I can't explain it... It smells...new

SavageFlamingo130d ago (Edited 130d ago )

Kind of like cheap bacon cooking. Even cheap bacon smells good.
