1996 Voted as ‘Best Year in Gaming’ by UK Public

1996: the year football came home and Gazza thrilled at Wembley; the Spice Girls hit number one with Wannabe, Oasis played Knebworth; the nation was drinking alcopops, Take That and Charles and Diana went their separate ways and a buxom British icon called Lara Croft entered the homes, lads mags and imaginations of millions of Brits. Maybe that’s why 1996, the year the first ever Tomb Raider was released, has been voted the most memorable year for gaming by British gamers.

As far as I'm concerned, my favourite year in gaming is 2003. PoP : The Sands of time, Beyond Good and Evil, Ratchet and Clank : Going Commando, Rayman : Hoodlum Havoc, Silent Hill 3, Worms 3D, Warcraft 3 : The Frozen Throne. Damn, Nostalgia.... That was probably the time I enjoyed video games the most. When the industry was not crowded with TPS, FPS, DRM, micro-transactions and DLCs. It was perfect back then. (Personal opinion here).

CalvinKlein4062d ago (Edited 4062d ago )

1998 is the best year in gaming, period. fact. no debating.

Below, dont forget half-life(my personal favorite game ever) and starcraft, or residient evil 2 etc

I love the 1995-2000 years of gaming. On the PC, N64, PS1 and Dreamcast I was in gaming heaven.

If you can look at this list and disagree about 1998 being the best year ever then you are blind : http://doublebuffered.com/2...

GamersRulz4062d ago

I agree with you, 1998 was best year in gaming ever. IMHO

Nick_5154062d ago

Yep, definitely. Too many of my favorite games. Maybe I'd put 96 as #2, but damn, that list.

Andreex4062d ago

95 to 200 best years no doubt

AZWification24062d ago

You forgot Wind Waker. The best game of that year.

Perjoss4062d ago

he was just testing you

Apollosupreme4062d ago

Didn't KOTR2 drop around that time?

tommygunzII4062d ago

I fell in love with FFXI and SOCOM around that time, many great games around 2003, EA Sports were at the top of their game as well. It's hard to compete with the PS1/N64 era though, when 3D gaming was introduced.

I'm more of a 1998 guy (Metal Gear Solid, Xenogears, Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy Tactics...), but yeah, I can dig 1996 too.

mathsman4062d ago

Yes buddy, yes. I'm with you on this one. ;)

kostchtchie_4062d ago

exactly, glory days for decent music and great video games

Reverent4062d ago

I second the hell outta that.

stu8884062d ago

Oasis played Knebworth and Maine Road that year. Great times!!

wenaldy4062d ago

Dont forget Gran Turismo ;)

Apollosupreme4062d ago

That was a fine year. The late 90's in general was a JRPG renaissance.

2011 is easily the best

finalfantasy XIII-2 released, it's also the greatest game ever made

jakmckratos4062d ago

I kinda think 2009 was awesome..Uncharted 2, Killzone 2, Infamous, Ratchet and Clank Crack in Time, Assassin's Creed 2, Batman Arkham Asylum, Beatles Rock Band...it was definitely the year I was happiest to have a ps3

Washington-Capitals4062d ago

Uncharted 2 is an amazing game. Killzone 2 was a good game. Amazing visuals, great single player but overall the game was alright and MP sucked. Infamous was also good. Rachet and Clank was also good. Notice how I keep saying "good". Not great. 2009 couldnt hold 1996/98's jock strap if it wanted too. No comparison.

IcyEyes4061d ago

"overall the game was alright and MP sucked"

-_-

I will help you .

"overall the game was alright and MP is not so great for me"

Thats better.

sjgamer4062d ago

Notice all the 2's? I wouldn't say it was the best year for gaming if the releases were mostly sequels. Look at that 1998 list, so innovative and original. I would have to agree that 1998 was THE year.

Trago13374062d ago

That title belongs to 1998 in my opinion, 2007 is a close second though.

OmniSlashPT4062d ago

My thoughts exactly, as well as 1997, 2001 and 2009/11. 2013 is shaping to be one of the best ever, absolutely phenomenal ending-gen titles, next gen lauch titles, new consoles...

Super Mario 64 DS: Remakes Done Right

Super Mario 64 DS was offered as a launch title for the Nintendo DS, a remake of the classic platform game with a few original tricks.

Chard7d ago

Not with those D-pad controls

CDbiggen7d ago

Needs more appreciation. I never had an N64 so this was what I played. Sure the Yoshi hat mechanic at first is a slog but you unlock Mario and the others for real and then it takes off. Personally I never had an issue with the controls. Can't forget the mini games and the 4 player rumble over download play.

kevco336d ago

Indeed, as stated in the article there were tonnes of control options and very much a 'take whatever you like, leave the rest' attitude to most of the game's extras.

I do agree that Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness was the worse one 😂 I remember playing some of it and I took it back. That game was just awful in every way. I bought it used at gamestop and glad they had that 7 day return policy for used games 😂

Pyrofire9575d ago

Would it be worth saying why?

ZeekQuattro75d ago

Simple. He's been hating on the Tomb Raider reboots for years. I can't imagine seeing them at the top of a best TR game list let alone being on the list in general sitting well with him because of it.

-Foxtrot75d ago

Zeek

“Hating”

No no, just pointing out how TR mutated into a generic action adventure game losing the appeal of what it once was when it was more about puzzles and platforming over going Rambo, slaughtering waves of enemies

But hey, continue being a dick and speaking about me like I’m not going to see the comment.

MeatyUrologist74d ago

Foxtrot, I'm curious if you have played the most recent games. Sure the 2013 reboot was hugely focused on combat, but each follow up became less and less about combat to the point where outside of a few large scale story missions I don't even remember combat being a part of shadow of the tomb raider. Shadow was so puzzle focused it actually was a bit much for me and I love the TR puzzles.

I still feel like Rise was the best of the series and I was a huge fan of the originals. To me it struck the perfect balance of exploration, platforming, puzzles, and combat. Not saying your opinion is wrong I'm just curious what you think they should have done different. Games do need to evolve somewhat to stay relevant. Would you prefer small linear jumping platform levels like the original?

RavenWolfx75d ago

I would agree Rise for 1 and the reboot as 2. Shadow is a bit high, though.

Sonic188175d ago (Edited 75d ago )

I think Shadow wasn't even develop by crystal dynamics. I thought it was the worse in the new trilogy

Pyrofire9575d ago

That's right. Shadow was developed by Eidos Montreal who who went and made Marvels Guardians of the Galaxy next. (Great game)
Meanwhile after Rise of the Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics made Marvels Avengers. (bad game)

MeatyUrologist75d ago

Agrees. First two are correct but Shadow should be around 5-6.

terstomp75d ago

For me, Legend should be alot higher (along with the other two ). Shadow, I enjoyed it, but has too much has fluff, as modern games tend to do. Playing the remastered series, and apart from the controls, is very good.

jznrpg75d ago

I really enjoyed the first 2 games, Legend and the first of the reboots and the rest I didn’t get into so I never finished.

robtion75d ago

Completely subjective list. I really liked Underworld, I preferred Lara's design. That said I loved the horror/uncharted feel of the reboot. I think all the TR games have strengths and weaknesses. None are objectively better in every way.
