5 Types of Achievements/Trophies That Must Die

AlienLion writes:

"If you’ve been with us for awhile, then you know that we love trophies and achievements. Hoarding aside, they are fun little incentives to spend some extra time with the games that we enjoy (and some that we don’t), or at least… they are supposed to be. All too often, game developers entirely miss the point. Some of them feel that trophies and achievements are simply an opportunity to fuck with their fans.

Sure, we call them “achievements” for a reason and you don’t usually get trophies for trivial things like blowing your nose (unless you’re really fucking amazing at it) but video games are supposed to provide fun experiences. In no way should “challenging” mean “torturous” or especially “mind-numbingly dull” when it comes to gaming. Yet, it often does so we feel like we need to help developers out with a few pointers:"

Any "online" ones to me

I don't see why I have to be forced to play online to complete a games achievement/trophy list

I don't mind if they were separate and they didn't count towards the games total or to get the Platinum but honestly it's just annoying

MrBeatdown4052d ago

I don't think so. I think they should cover the whole game.

If the multiplayer's not worth playing... well, that's more of a problem with the multiplayer itself than the game's trophies/achievements.

To me, the best option is, well, options. I think Mass Effect 3 let you get certain ones in either single or multiplayer. That's a great way to do it. Depending on the game, I'd much rather reach the max level in multiplayer than, say, play though on the hardest difficulty.

RedSoakedSponge4052d ago

yeah but sometimes you are late to the party and buy the game late, meaning the multiplayer community will be (in a lot of cases) non-existent.

i believe online achievements are stupid since i hate the idea of getting the game years later and not being able to get achievements since there is no multiplayer community.

well thats how i view it anyway.

achievements should be obtainable no matter when you decide to buy the game.

sorceror1714052d ago

@RedSoakedSponge - That's a feature, not a bug. They want you to buy it early, when they get maximum money for it. So, online trophies to encourage you to buy when the online community still exists.

AlienLion4051d ago

Agree with MrBeatdown. It's a good idea to give players the choice of tackling achievements online or on your own.

MrBeatdown4051d ago (Edited 4051d ago )

@RedSoakedSponge

Well, yeah.

I don't want MP trophies in everything. Sometimes it's just crap and nobody plays it. But like I said, I see that as a problem with the game, not the trophies. I wouldn't want trophy or achievement requirements to prohibit them in good multiplayer games, just because some developers come up with crap.

In a good game with good MP, there should be online trophies if a lot of people will be playing.

Root I agree with you, online communities die we can't help that

Good_Guy_Jamal4052d ago

EA shouldn't have any online trophies on their games because they shut down servers. I'll never get get 1000GS on my Fifa 11 now!

BioDead4052d ago

I agree with online trophies. They are hard to get and i have bad internet brandwdth so it always disconnects.

deadfrag4052d ago (Edited 4052d ago )

I dont look to achivements to enjoy a game, and actually if they never existed i would not miss them. But in the name of people that think achivements make there games and gaming better i think online only achivements should end.Or make the achivements that you must unlock online also be able to unlock on SP either.Either way the system is broken for achivements and for trophies because there are people that are able to mod and unlock the two reward systems.

Stoppokingme4052d ago

I agree with the first point, achievements for completing levels and campaigns are unnecessary.

I like the achievements that actually set the bar higher for the player, such as ones that requires a player to finish a level using certain weapons, without dying, or killing X amount of Y,etc.

maximaz4051d ago

That wasn't really the point but I agree.

Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter - Gone but not Forgotten

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter launched nearly 20 years ago, but remains an easy recommendation even today.

banger8815d ago

It's 20 years old and we can still play it. Are we going to be able to play Avatar and Star Wars Outlaws in 20 years?

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter - PC Retro Time Capsule vs Xbox 360/PS2 - Old-School Cross-Gen

Digital Foundry : In a new Retro PC Time Capsule video, John and Alex go back to cross-gen gaming, 2006-style, with Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. Join us for a look back at a time where Xbox 360 out-performed mainstream PCs by a long chalk, resulting in some games receiving almost completely different versions of the 'same game'... and not even Ageia PhysX support can help PC on this one! Meanwhile, it's a sorry state of affairs once we get to look at the PS2 version of the game.

SheenuTheLegend63d ago

all the games in the above list are bang on. this is the only reason we need backwards compatibility and physical presense of games for the upcoming future, no matter what.

Yi-Long63d ago

Honorable mention to the excellent Driveclub, one of the best racing games of all-time and one of my favourite games ever.

melons63d ago

yes! incredible rain effects; so good to drive along in rain with your Spotify playlist blaring

Skuletor63d ago

I really wanted a MotorStorm using the same engine, Driveclub is easily one of the best looking games on PS4 and I'm surprised they didn't even give it a PS4 Pro patch.

ravens5263d ago

Yes indeed. May just install it on my PS5. You know, physical copy and all.

monkey60263d ago

I adored Driveclub and the Bike expansion. I also loved Motorstorm. Evolution shutting down was a crime
