Xbox 720 likely at E3 2012, Crytek on board

Microsoft is gearing up to announce the successor to the Xbox 360 at E3 2012, and Crytek is already developing a new TimeSplitters game for the next generation of consoles, VideoGamer.com can reveal.

Specifications for the new machine have not been finalised, but Crytek is using Microsoft's DirectX 11 as the current basis for next-generation development. Tessellation, multithreaded rendering, and compute shaders are the three headlining features for DirectX 11.

Hmmm, don't know how to feel about this. Does this actually mean that Halo 4 will be pushed back to be a launch title for the NeXbox?

Excited and worried at the same time. How much'll this cost? What'll be the jump in technology? What're the specs? Oh yeah and of course ... WHAT ARE THEY USING AS A STORAGE MEDIUM?!?

The Meerkat4712d ago (Edited 4712d ago )

Maybe there will be 2 versions of Halo 4?

Like Halo CE and Halo CE HD.

It would be Halo 4 360 & Halo 4 720

tigertron4712d ago

I think Halo 4 will be the 360's final encore.

2012 is the most likely E3 for next-gen to be unveiled, with Christmas 2012/spring 2013 releases. I'd be surprised if Sony and Microsoft went another E3 without showing their new hardware, especially when Nintendo just unveiled theirs this year.

captain-obvious4712d ago (Edited 4712d ago )

i think it'll happen since Nintendo already did it and showed the WiiU

Sony is going to be last to reveal its new console since the PS3 still got games to go by and they got the PSV to launch first

AND halo 4 might be a launch title
remember there was NO 360 logo at the end

maniacmayhem4712d ago

Its more than possible that the nextbox will be 100% compatible with the 360. Therefore they can release halo 4 and still announce a new console.

I doubt the online infostructure of live will change so drastically that it will break halo 4 gameplay.

THWIP714712d ago

...just like how Nintendo released LoZ: Twilight Princess on GC and Wii.

ksense4712d ago

I am pretty sure Microsoft will tease the next console at e3 2012 just to eat into the Wii U buzz. I am really not sure about Sony though. They might do it just like they announced vita right before the 3ds launched.

gamingdroid4712d ago

What about cross play between consoles? There was also some talk about games being forward compatible.

Maybe a new Kinect that comes standard with the console too.

Now that is pretty cool.

Active Reload4712d ago

If it's powerful enough, Crytek could release Timesplitters onto the Wii U or Epic could maybe bring the Good Samaritan to it. It would be more than likely, those two companies that would push the console harder than most...

JeffGUNZ4712d ago

It makes perfect sense. Microsoft didn't show ANY Halo 4 gameplay. Just a teaser reveal trailer. They also announced it as a "new trilogy", makes sense to have this new trilogy on their next gen. console. Launching this system with a game like Halo 4 next gen. would be HUGE.

Also, think about this. Gears of War was pushed to September. Makes sense, it puts Gears back on a every 2 year cycle. I wouldn't doubt a Nextbox reveal at E3 with a launch 2012 holiday season. Microsoft is good for holding their cards and showing off content and releasign it shortly there after.

tigertron4712d ago

Halo 4 will be a 360 title.

http://halo.xbox.com/en-us/...

Also, at the end of the trailer you see the 360 Jump In bit at the end.

AngryTypingGuy4712d ago

I definitely don't think that Halo 4 will be the 360's final encore. It's doing too good. The 360 will go well into the next generation and then slowly fizzle out. Unlike the original Xbox, the 360 is profitable for MS.

With all the money that companies lose to start up a new console, it will be an asset for MS to keep making money off of the 360 into the next gen, just like Sony will do with the PS3.

ginsunuva4712d ago

Lol you mean halo 4 and halo 4 720p

sikbeta4712d ago

What was the point of kinect if they're going to launch a new console? I don't think it's going to happen...

gamingdroid4712d ago

They can release a new Kinect with full backwards compatibility. Besides there is nothing preventing the current Kinect to work with a new Xbox.

AngryTypingGuy4712d ago

The points of Kinect were to breathe new life into the 360 and to capitalize on the motion-gaming craze. Who wouldn't want a chunk of the massive Wii market?

AAACE54712d ago

I swear, it seems like right after I say something, it gets announced! I said earlier today that the next Xbox would get announced at E3 2012! And about what could happen with Halo 4!

Fallouts4712d ago

I do remember reading a while back on a rumor about all 360 games being BC and taking it a step further by enhancing the game. Don't k ow by bow much or if it's even true but damn that would be a great idea, no more remakes just put it In.

EVILDEAD3604712d ago

Halo 4 will release next holiday on the 360 to an Xbox with 60 million plus install and a 45 million active subscription base..in short Halo will finally launch in the holiday window and will have it's largest install in the history of the console. And will see the infamous price drop..

Halo 5..Forza 5..The next Gears trilogy..Fable 4..Kingdoms 2..will all make it onto 720.

All 360 assets will be backward compatible..Xbox Live accounts will push forward and so will Kinect.

This means we won't see a new 360 for 2 years and gives developers a 2-3 year shot to develop massive new ips to launch for all 3 new consoles.

People believing that Microsoft will pass up E3 is on drugs..because if they pass then they will lose all of the momentum that they have created this Gen and we saw how that has worked out for other consoles.

Evil

SilentNegotiator4711d ago (Edited 4711d ago )

A 2012 reveal hardly means a 2012 release. More likely 2013. Halo 4 will be on the 360.

Just remember what they say about rumors on the internet. MS is just starting to reap up profits with Kinect; I don't see them breaking that any time soon, unless they have a "KinectBox" system in mind.

"Real Banjo Kazooe would be also cool,.."
-
Don't wait up. Rare is a shell of their former self. They made the last game that way to have LIVE features; no surprise since they're a part of MS now. If the next game isn't on Kinect, it will at least have something LIVE related.

gamingdroid4711d ago

Based on manufacturing cost, Kinect is profitable day-1 for the hardware. That's of course not accounting for extra Xbox 360 hardware sales, other accessories and games.

Kinect has been wildly successful for MS.

SilentNegotiator4711d ago (Edited 4711d ago )

@Droid

That's exactly what I said. But they just started selling the thing, like, half a year ago. Why would they abandon it and bring out a new console any time soon when Kinect is doing so well?

dabri54711d ago

They can announce the console at 2012 e3 and not release the console for another year. Wouldn't be the first time. Announce 2012, release 2013. Halo 4 comes out in 2012. 360 didn't have a Halo game at launch. I don't expect the new xbox to either.

dabri54711d ago

@SilentNegotiator

All of the accessories from the Wii are compatible with Wiiu.

I would imagine that they will still push Kinect even with the new Xbox. No reason it couldn't work on the new system. It just uses a usb connection.

gamingdroid4711d ago

MS aren't abandoning it with new hardware. They can either support both the new and existing, or continue using Kinect as is with the next console.

In fact, I have a sneaking suspicion the latter is what is going to happen. Then midway through the next cycle, they will release an updated Kinect to extend the life of the current console then.

ChrisGTR14711d ago

i bought a 360 on launch date but im fed up with the lack of exclusive games and new focus on kinect audience.

HappyGaming4711d ago

Halo 4 will be Xbox 1s Halo 2... the reason why people buy/keep their old Xbox...

dcbronco4711d ago

I believe MS will announce and launch a new system next year(remember they don't want to do the look and wait thing anymore). And Halo 4 will be on both systems. But it will be the same disc. Many may have forgotten that a year or two ago it was rumored that MS was working on a technology that would allow them to upgrade a game according to the specs of the machine being used. It may even have something to do with the new disc upgrade they did recently. They could launch a new console, that not only plays new 720 games, but upgrades old 360 games and improves Kinect because of a USB 3.0 interface. Anyone wanting to continue using a 360 or that wants a cheap console can still buy a 360. People who buy a 720 would get new value on their old games, abilities on Kinect and new experiences on the the new console.

dcbronco4711d ago

And I am so tired of the lack of exclusives nonsense. 360 has just as many exclusives as Sony. They may not be 1st party, but they get far more 3rd party support. And for all of this "I want exclusives" talk, no one really buys the games. Does anyone really think Sony made much profit if any on Killzone 2. It took 5 years of development. I would bet they lost money on that. Forza gets panned buy the same "exclusives" people and yet it continues to outsell the vast majority of Sony first party games. Only UC comes close. Fable, Gears and Halo all kill Sony exclusives in sales.

I know the reply, "I only want great games". Well another studio closed this week. Great games or not. You have to sell games too.

HappyGaming4711d ago

If PS4 is coming to E3 2012 we will know about it from March :P

Most likely,.. What else do they really have?
Banjo Kazooe? Maybe it will release on both,.. one in 1080P with tessalation,..

MS=WEAK (even weaker, than at the start of this gen)
They have less studios than they had going in,.. sad

zinkabass4712d ago (Edited 4712d ago )

?
What did I say?,.. Halo4 on nextbox would only help them,.. Real Banjo Kazooe would be also cool,..
Or they can just pack and go home, without any first party,.. they would need to be damn crazy,.. Maybe you guys are just so loyal,.. battered wife syndrome,..

Or maybe they just really know and understand their consumers,...Sesame street and teletubies,.. apparently

Ghoul4712d ago (Edited 4712d ago )

wich all respect

dont underestimate a company preparing a new system, IF they announce the next box at e3 2012 then alot of companys are allready developing on the next hardware specs (estimates)

that would also explain the lack of new games this year on the 360

im not a fan of ms (but i like my box) and i bet if they announce a new xbox you can rest assured they will enter with a big bang.

maybe you should start with a little common sense instead of trying to be a pseudo analyst of the gaming industry.

i game for 26 years and work for 7 years on the games industry but i wouldnt dare to make such bold claims like most people do these days.

EDIT::
btw crytek back up ms alot lately and IF they are involved defining the next hardware you can rest asured that it will deliver.

if there is a company that pushes hardware still its crytek

zinkabass4712d ago (Edited 4712d ago )

@Ghoul,.. I do agree somewhat,.. but same apologetics was used last year,..
Want to make a bet? Hell, I doubt there will even be another MS system.
And about crytek,.. they don't push shit,.. they mostly brute force it,..If they were defining the new hardware,...shit would not look 599,..but 1599,..

TenkoTAiLS4712d ago

It's amusing you say don't count a company out when they release new tech, and if it has crytek on it that it will be decent and push the boundaries. Over on the Wii U topics people are bashing a new console before they know anything about it beyond the controller, and when it got crytek support people started saying how crytek wasnt important and it would probably be watered down. It's just sad how people change their opinions based on what company announces it.

OT tho, I am looking forward to seeing what Microsofts next offering is, will be interesting to see if there is any truth to the rumors about them trying to cross platform and integrate with Windows 8.

RedDead4711d ago

the new Xbox will only release in 2013 - announcement at E3 2012, that gives Halo 4 plenty of headspace.

I hope this is true though.

malamdra4712d ago

if Kinect is indeed the future of MS like the guy with the sunglases said, then this whil be a crappy console with Wii U-like specs

and this time it will be absolutely true that next generation will start when Sony wants it

etowntwo4712d ago

If Sony releases last again next gen, then they will remain in last place like this gen kid.

k-dillinger4712d ago

yes i agree next gen starts when Sony says it does and ppl need to understand sony will not be releasing ps4 even if Microsoft launches theirs 1st the ps3 was meant to compete against wii u and 720.. besides its way to early for sony to follow suit after only releasing worldwide in what 2007 no way we got some years still b4 ps4..

frostypants4712d ago

The PS4 will release by early 2013 along with the 720/NeXbox. Sony won't make that mistake again.

It has nothing to do with the PS3. They'll still support it, just like they still support the PS2.

malamdra4712d ago

why is it that people keep comparing the sales numbers of products released years apart?

maybe the best thing fo Sony will be wait at least two years after MS releases their console to launch a new PS so sales numbers will have to be match in timeframes, like it should be now

slapedurmomsace4711d ago

How does it start when Sony says it does? So the Wii U is what? And if the next Xbox is release/announced before the PS4 what generation does that belong to? I swear, you guys defend Sony like that pay you. Oh btw, Nintendo use to think the "next generation" started when they said so as well and that somewhat worked for the SNES, but the N64 was not really a failure persay, but didn't come close to living up to the PS, and the Gamecube was a disaster compared to the number 1 console of that generation. Arrogance breds failure.

baodeus4711d ago

@malamdra

then u must admit that what Sony said about this gen (this gen won't start till Sony said so), isn't true then, and u are right. No one give a shitz what Sony said. If they aren't comming out early, people not gonna wait cause obviously they can make money early with other companies.

Since when did u hear companies release their product later than their competitors get most of the market share (unless their competitors screw up badly)? Well i don't need to tell u, u can see what happen with Sony this gen right?

Nicaragua4711d ago

"Since when did u hear companies release their product later than their competitors get most of the market share (unless their competitors screw up badly)? "

SNES released later than Sega Genesis and took most of the market share

PS2 released later than Dreamcast and took most of the market share

Wii released later than 360 and took most of the market share

baodeus4711d ago

Well i did say if the competitors don't screw up, like Sega which pretty much kill themselves.

frostypants4712d ago

Why do you assume that Sony isn't working on the PS4?

it is only matter of time till MS announce a new xbox. But it will not be way ahead of its time it will improve on what nintendo will do. and that's actaully smart have a system which does advances the tech and had kinect built in for a fair price of maybe 349 to 299.

than either at tgs 2012 or gdc 2013 sony will show or atleast confirmed the fact they are working on ps4 and it will launch fall 2013 to early 2014.

but i would not be surprised if for 2012 both sony and ms keep quite while tehey work on next consoles just to see what nintendo does right and what they can improve on.

biggest thing with next consoles will be price cony understands that look at NGP so don't expect to pay anything over 400 at the most but it could be as little as 349-299

Here is the trick windows 8 is the next xbox and it will need 8 gigs of ram to run just like how crytek wanted. Pc gaming comes home on the next xbox platform. You will see laptops with wiiu screens now and windows will have a vr feel to it now.

Sony uses PSGL
Its based on OpenGL ES.
It also suppurts LibGMC and C for Graphics (CG).
LibGMC is a low level language and CG is a Nvidia developed High level language for shaders.

Funny thing that MS co-developed CG with Nvidia.

Raven_Nomad4712d ago

Phil Spencer already declined comment as to if Halo 4 would be on the next Xbox. I already suspected Microsoft would announce Xbox 720 next year with Halo 4 and Gears Of War Exile as launch titles.

It only makes sense to start new trilogies on the next platform. Microsoft is smart though and while in the eyes of the people an announcement of the Xbox 720 would have "won" E3 in the people's eye, it would have crippled 360 sales in the meantime.

Expect Xbox 720 with Halo 4 Holiday next year. They will get a one year jump on Sony yet again.

Imagine a launch lineup with Halo 4, Gears Of War Exile and a game from Crytek...could be pretty slick.

Nes_Daze4712d ago

Well it's not like Sony needs to necessarily rush their next console to launch before the xbox720. By just releasing a moderately priced system, it is no where near impossible for them to overcome a headstart by the next Microsoft console. Heck, it is only a few million away and that is with all the bad press from launch and the psn outage, that's pretty impressive to me.
On another note, Not surprised, it will be interesting to see what this new console will look like and perform.

OC_MurphysLaw4712d ago

@Gloomy_Nes... Actually I think its far more impressive that the 360 has managed to hold Sony off for as long as they have given the disaster of the RROD.

gamingdroid4712d ago

Yep, with "supposed" inferior technology to boot. Even more remarkable is that they are able to convince people to pay for Xbox Live, but Sony is unable to convince gamers to pay extra for the PS3.

Combined, the Xbox platform is more expensive than the PS3.

MasterCornholio4711d ago (Edited 4711d ago )

The reason why so many people subscribe to XBOXlive is because they want to play games online. Because without gold the multiplayer aspect of 360 games is rendered useless. Hence why so many people subscribe to it. Now if Sony didn't have free multiplayer i can guarantee you that more people would pay for plus (compared to how many people have plus now minus the free users).

OC_MurphysLaw4712d ago

Raven, I think you are pretty spot on for Gears of War Exile... running on the new Unreal Engine on the new platform. Halo 4 will be the swan song for the 360. Last big game for it, will ensure people stay vested and interested in the 360 while the new console comes out. I also think we will see MS pull a Sony and continue major support for the 360 for a few years into the new console life cycle with price drops.

Nes_Daze4712d ago

Sorry, but the RROD issues didn't stain Microsoft like the horrible launch of the PS3($600 anyone?) and the PSn outage combined. The media obviously picked on Sony's console, quickly becoming its whipping boy. I think next gen, with all companies learning from their mistakes, and from Nintendo's successful run, we'll see some pretty interesting consoles.

Evoluti0n4711d ago

@ Gloomy

...are you serious? RROD was completely and utterly worse than the launch price and PSN issues of Sony. Were you on N4G when the RROD was going on?

It was anarchy, period.

AlienLion4711d ago

Bonobo123454711d ago

I think you can pretty much bank on MS announcing new hardware next year. Nintendo will be done with all their Hardware announcements.... Sony will still be a year out most likely... MS would have the spotlight to themselves. Plus the announcement most likely will take much of the steam away from Wii U (if it has any at that point).

DOMination-3h ago

How much confidence do people have in these games being good though? I hope they will be (especially Avowed) but from what we know of them so far, it's hardly a guarantee, is it?

And even if they do turn out to be good, how much of that will be down to Xbox and its leadership? Most of these games were either sequels to games made before being acquired or started development before being acquired.

And just a note on Hellblade II - it is out in two weeks and unless I'm missing something, I don't see much in the way of previews or advertising from Microsoft. Not ideal for a niche game that looks like it probably cost a lot of money to make. It genuinely feels like another game being sent out to die and then have the studio shut down.

MS is a dumpster fire and Sony isn’t fighting anymore and it shows. I fail to see how this is a good thing.

Skuletor30m ago

not exactly like the studios were putting out good games anyway. Industry needs to restart from the ground up; if games like battlebit or manor lords can be made by teams with 10 people - then there's something fundamentally wrong with having 500 man teams put out glitchy overmonetized crap.

Microsoft new the shape the game was in but needed something for GamePass after a whole year of no releases into the service. Them taking it out on Arkane seems really disingenuous and distasteful. And WTF did Tango do? Didn't Todd just release a statement saying how he would never retire. Fire his ass.

romulus231d 7h ago

Well if that was the reason for the timing it didn't work.

darthv721d 7h ago

wow... i did not have them closing Tango and Arkane Austin on my bingo card.

Hofstaderman1d 6h ago (Edited 1d 6h ago )

Yes it does. Arkane Austin I can understand but Tango Gameworks made an excellent game in Hi Fi Rush.
On review, it want really all on Austin for Redfall and its failure, they were forced to make a multiplayer games when their expertise was always single player driven first person games.

Guys I’m not being all that serious…relax

Outside_ofthe_Box1d 5h ago (Edited 1d 5h ago )

"I don't think anything will minimize this impact."

It already has. Notice your comment(or lack there of) vs HD2.

On another note, I would like to see Microsoft buy more studios and do more shadows drops on subscription services like they did Hi-Fi Rush. It's great for the industry I was told by people on here.

Zeref1d 4h ago (Edited 1d 4h ago )

I'm pretty sure that's exactly how it works. Same thing with layoffs. All of a sudden everyone has layoffs around the same time

Cacabunga1d 2h ago

MS will always make it to amaze me by showing the worse version of themselves every single time..

peppeaccardo1d 2h ago

MS proving to the world that ttheir leadership cannot drive success from these new acquisitions. They have ran the numbers and they have realized that long term, without a clear direction from the motehrship, these are a loss for the company hence they need to be cut. I might be wrong but I am absolutelly sure that if these developers would have not been purchased by Microsoft they would be still on business. A shame ...

Einhander19721d 8h ago (Edited 1d 8h ago )

10/10 deflection, the ol' Sony too deflect...

Let's not discuss the fact that PlayStations struggles have largely been caused by the fact that game pass has reshaped how consumers spend causing them to spend less as they play what is on subscriptions and don't buy games as much because they either have become subscription gamers or they fear the game will come to a subscription so they don't buy things.

And it's not just PlayStation, the whole industry has been effected, many big studios are struggling across the board to match sales targets from pre-game pass releases which is especially apparent in things like sequels.

Heck the best example was Microsoft's own Starfield which should have easily blasted past 10m sales by the end of 2023 going by sales of similar Bethesda games yet was only able to achieve 3m which of course was almost entirely on Steam.

Moegooner1d 8h ago

Or maybe it's because Sony hasn't released multiple worthwhile SP games like they normally do each gen and the ones they did released actually sold well.

Layoffs aren't because studios are struggling, but because major publishers want to maximise profit gains.

Profchaos1d 7h ago (Edited 1d 7h ago )

Absolutely it's a service that's changed the way we view and consume games overall for the worse games have little value when they are part of a sub and become disposable doubly so if they are a day 1 freebie often it's the kiss of death for a game to be day 1 on gamepass as PlayStation players look at it like why do I have to pay 60 dollars for back 4 blood, payday 3 or outriders it'll be on PS plus soon enough and funny enough those games always fail to meet expectations sales are poor and longevity is poor.

When I see a game get a day 1 tag outside of first party my first thought is always something is wrong with it and it can't stand on its own feet so the publisher has made a deal to recoup development cost.

Even first party games have dropped in quality noticeably so since gamepass with gears 5 being the only good release I can think of since gamepass started

Petebloodyonion1d 7h ago

Wasn't aware that Gamepass is available on PlayStation.
Or are you telling us that a service from a console lacking in sales is so great that it affects the morale and buying habits of ppl lacking access to the service?

Also pretty sure that saying all of them competing for who sucks means the whole industry and not just Sony and MS.

Nitrowolf21d 7h ago (Edited 1d 7h ago )

This is what people online want. They just don't know or understand it. So many have warned about consolidation, and exactly what they have fear has been happening

This isn't the end, expect more bought out studios to be closed in the next few years

Hofstaderman1d 6h ago

Spot on. All in the name "growth" to appease investors and shareholders. Can't sustain the lie though...it will always implode as illustrated by these closures. Applies to MS and Embracer.

TiredGamer1d 1h ago (Edited 1d 1h ago )

This. ^

Publishers are slowly mitigating all development risk since every new big/medium budget game has become too big to fail. Games are too expensive to make and the profitability for titles rests on a hair’s edge. When you need to sell 5 million copies of a game to be profitable, you know that we’ve turned a new page in gaming. The real victims here are the smaller studios/games that bring so much character and variety to the industry, like with Hi-Fi Rush.

It looks to me that Hi-Fi Rush did not fulfill financial expectations for moving the GamePass needle, and the sales from the PlayStation port experiment did not measure up either. So it gets the boot.

Sad day and era for gaming.

notachance21h ago

yeah smaller ABK studios like Toys For Bob are now in dangers

notachance1d 7h ago

I just don’t know how the hell a company that can spend $67b to purchase a publisher decided that it’s okay to close the studio that produces their best game last year.

Whoever the higher up there that decides this is completely out of touch of how the game industry works, the damn xbox division as a whole would’ve been closed already if they weren’t sustained by other MS divisions.

shinoff21831d 7h ago

I got in an argument with someone on reddit and they weren't haven't that Xbox isn't propped up by other divisions argument. They swore up and down that Xbox was pulling its own weight. I just stopped after a couple back and forths

TiredGamer1d 1h ago

Didn’t move the GamePass needle and the PlayStation port couldn’t save the return on investment….

dumahim1d 6h ago

So this is what happens when you're pleased with the sales and investing in the studio? Good guy Phil at it again.

Sonic18811d 5h ago (Edited 1d 5h ago )

From Aaron Greenburg:

"Hi-Fi RUSH was a break out hit for us and our players in all key measurements and expectations. We couldn’t be happier with what the team at Tango Gameworks delivered with this surprise release."

😂😂😂 🤥🤥

Lightning771d 5h ago (Edited 1d 5h ago )

Once again MS creates their own problems and they create their own animosity. Idc about their shitty excuse and "reasons" they're a incompetent company, plus all their Xbox fanboy influencers are dwindling I noticed. How many excuses can you make for a company like MS? Consoles are down and they're losing their own fanboy influencers also. That's all they had to cheer lead them now they're leaving them. Pretty nobody will be on MS dude no matter if they (if they ever but I doubt it) get their act together.

Trashy ass ppl and company....

If they go under eventual it's because of their own doing nobody else's.

porkChop1d 2h ago

Yeah overall this gen is pretty shit. Everyone is making horrible decisions, great devs are getting either gutted or entirely shut down regardless of quality or success, very little in the way of innovative games, etc. This industry needs to see some drastic changes.

badz14916h ago

where are all the cheerleaders for MS acquisitions amid all these?? you guys happy now? this will not be the end of it, maybe just the beginning!

OptimusDK8h ago

Maybe it has to do with this:
Hinji Mikami is leaving Tango Gameworks in the coming months. On February 23 it was reported that Mikami would be departing Tango Gameworks. Bethesda has stepped in to confirm the report of Mikami's forthcoming departure from the studio he founded over a decade ago.

Mikami originally founded Tango Gameworks in 2010 after departing Capcom, having lead the development of iconic games like Resident Evil and Resident Evil 4.

Tango Gameworks and Arkane?

RaidenBlack1d 8h ago

Arkane Austin (Prey developer)
Not Arkane Lyon ( Dishonored developer)

Crows901d 7h ago

Prey was fantastic. Red fall was shit because they were forced to do shit they didn't want to make.

Atkane Lyon did death loop I believe....I hated that one.

Will be more soon, I've said it before I can't see MS keeping Bethesda. I think they'll strip it's IPs and slowly close everything, it's what they do.

VariantAEC1d 6h ago

No one wants to admit it, but yeah MS has a long history of pillaging other smaller corporations for IP and dispensing with everything else.

Zeref1d 4h ago

That doesn't make any sense lol. How would they make money from these IP'S with no developers?

MrDead1d 3h ago (Edited 1d 3h ago )

@Zeref
"That doesn't make any sense lol. How would they make money from these IP'S with no developers?"

MS don't care about the studios, they want the IP's. They'll keep the big ones in house, the game engines they run on and licence the rest. Stacks of cash to be made from licensing IP's ...or just sit on them so no one else can use them.

blackblades1d ago

@Zeref silly fool, buy them for the IP have there other studios make the games using the IP names to sell them. We all know having a popular franchise name can sell

Einhander19721d 8h ago (Edited 1d 8h ago )

Well xbox fans you got what you asked for... and honestly deserved...

It was so easily predictable that game pass was never going to be able to support all these studios.

If Microsoft can't win they are going to burn it all to the ground...

Countdown to Phil Spencer telling us "it's better for the gamers this way" yet again.

Barlos1d 7h ago

Agree but gamers didn't ask for people to be out of work.

VenomUK1d 6h ago (Edited 1d 5h ago )

@Barlos They indirectly did. Every person who made a wish list of who Microsoft should buy next and were sending tweets to Phil Spencer and Xbox with proposed studios, played a part.

The saddest part is the studios were closed because of the underperformance of their last games, and if they had been given a chance then their next games could’ve been great and succeeded. But it is the same old Phil Spencer Microsoft problem which is not giving them a chance, and that’s why he is not able to manage game studios.

VariantAEC1d 5h ago

Yeah they did. Just because they refused to see what everyone with a brain was telling them doesn't mean they didn't know. They were told, they should've put up a fight and they didn't. This is the result. But who knows even if MS' fans weren't such boot-lickers, MS could've carried this out against their fans wishes anyway. Unfortunately, we have the hardcore MS defense bots running to deflect from any bad news and maybe, just maybe, MS felt empowered to do more damage as a result of their fans cheering this all on.

anast1d 5h ago

They sold themselves out. Once people buy you they can do what they want. None of this should have been a surprise. When companies get bought out, they eventually get dismantled.

shinoff21831d 7h ago

Xbox fans were to busy daydreaming of Ms curbstopping Sony they didn't look at the big picture.

Einhander19721d 6h ago

Not disagreeing at all.

I want to add that from the day Microsoft announced game pass, before they even started buying up studios it was obvious that game pass wasn't going to be able to support itself.

It was so dumb that they doubled down on it by spending 100B on a service they knew only existed through subsidization.

They should have realized there was no way that adding massively more costs on a subscription they were subsidizing was certain to fail. Especially after seeing how it had devastated sales across the platform as a whole.

Heck by the time this generation started during covid when the console sales were similar PlayStation was already outselling xbox on multiplatform games 8:1 yet they still doubled down on it.

1d 6h ago
Relientk771d 8h ago

This is beyond wrong. Like wtf!? Especially Tango Gameworks with Hi-Fi Rush. I've heard nothing but good things about that game. Just because Arkane Austin screwed up one game release doesn't mean you need to close them. It sounds like they were forced to do a multiplayer game when they're a single player studio. They could have made a Prey 2 or some other game next.

Just wow awful news.

Einhander19721d 8h ago

Apparently PlayStation owners didn't buy enough copies of Hi-Fi Rush...

romulus231d 7h ago

"Xbox says Hi-Fi Rush was a success "in all key measurements" amid rumors of poor sales. Following rumors that Tango Gameworks' Hi-Fish Rush didn't meet sales expectations, Xbox marketing VP Aaron Greenburg is defending the "break out hit" as a success by all metrics."

According to Aaron Greenburg it was a success so they shouldn't have even needed PlayStation owners to buy it. That being said, I bought it and really enjoyed it, it's a great game. Shame MS closed them down.

RpgSama1d 7h ago

@Romulus23

All lies by the Green Bug, that just means that a lot of people fired bullets or whatever in the game, that's the key measurements they care to share.

Tango did NOT deserve to be closed down, they have not released a single bad game.

Crows901d 7h ago

That's usually what happens when you don't release it at the same time as other platforms....same thing happened with tomb raider reboot sequel. MS got exclusivity for a year and then when it came to PlayStation it barely sold. Nobody cared anymore.

shinoff21831d 7h ago

Still waiting on the physical release pre order window

VariantAEC1d 5h ago

Well... I did my part. Hi-Fi Rush is a good game, but I don't think its MS' style. We don't really know how well it did or didn't perform by the numbers or whether it broke even. This could just be another MS blunder.

Elda1d 4h ago

Exactly. MS purchasing a 3rd party studio & keeping games off of other platforms probably hurt them in the long run, then finally putting Hi Fi Rush on PS which in turn PS fans probably didn't care to buy & support Hi Fi Rush after a year later of release. Hi Fi Rush was released on Gamepass so it probably never really made any money selling solely.

Eonjay1d 4h ago

@romulus23

Let's hope it didn't sell well because that would make this worse. Also I could have sworn I read an article about their next game in the works.

Seraphim1d 2h ago (Edited 1d 2h ago )

I was wondering if that played any part considering the timing, though, XB claimed the game to be a success last year only on XB & PC. Regardless MS f'd up there too. They shadow dropped HiFi on XB/PC last year at the perfect time. This year when they released on PS not only had the hype died, but there were so many solid games available the first 3 months of this year to play.

I almost bought it on PC last year, but now that it dropped on PS I just have far too many games to play to bother...

If MS needs PS and even Switch sales they need a better strategy. At the very least a release date where players are more inticed to buy said game. The problem is always going to be that if they want exclusives the hype for these games will be dead a year later. The exceptions might be some of their heavy hitters.... 2 cents

Angyobangyo12h ago(Edited 12h ago)

PS and PC owners probably bought more copies that Xbox owners.

I can only imagine the little amount of revenue both games generated, sent straight to gamepass and excluded from the largest current gen console userbase. Not to say both games would have done well if they were on PS5 too, but you heavily damage to a games revenue when you put it on a stagnating sub service for a poorly selling console, can't really see people going out in droves to sub to GP to play this.

shinoff21831d 6h ago

Gamepass subs(most of Xbox players) don't buy games all like that so it's not sustainable. It's reality.

RaidenBlack1d 7h ago

Yea Austin made one of the most creative game of last gen with Prey and were forced to take risk with Redfall and now the whole studio is being closed.

Aphrodia1d 7h ago

Yes, that Tango gameworks/ Hi-Fi closure was an eye opener for me as well. Neither played it nor was interested in it myself but all I heard was everyone acting like it was the second coming of guitar hero or something.

I don't know what else to say other than modern gaming is an overwhelming sea of mediocrity and there's not enough voices of reason speaking up and saying that most games made these days are just not very good.

shinoff21831d 6h ago

Your playing the wrong games then. There's always been shovelware type games. Going back to wii, snes, nes, ps1 Xbox og. That's a bs blanket statement. As an older gamer since atari days I'd personally say this is a great time. If you can't find anything to play. That's on you

With all that said in no way or form am I speaking of multi-player games, gacha, or whatever. I'm strictly speaking on single player games.

Aphrodia1d 4h ago

you are hilarious. trying to validate your comment by excluding over half of the games out there today. Pathetic man.

Neonridr1d 6h ago

I'm more devastated at the loss of The Evil Within.

Chevalier19h ago

Wait I was told Xbox had great engagement numbers?! Some Xbox fans said they bought games when I told them Xbox customers don't buy games?

So Xbox bought studios to keep games off other platforms and forgot they conditioned Xbox customers to not buy games. Whoops.

So anyone else think Outer World's 2 dies 🤔? I'm thinking a small game losing out on Nintendo and Playstation gamers buying will kill this IP. But it's okay Xbox fans can get more COD! Halo, Gears and Forza! Woot that's a 'win'. Yay Gamepass FTW

Tango did NOT deserve to be closed down, they have not released a single bad game, and I'm sure Arkhane failed just because they were both rushed and pressured into making a GaaS game they had no experience in doing and no support to get it completed out of the gate.

PrinceOfAnger1d 7h ago

Not a big deal only hi fi rush was good

Sony has closed
Manchester studio
Japan studio
Pixel opus
London studio
Ready At Dawn ...

RupeeHoarder1d 7h ago

The difference being Sony has a large group of other studios that have done something positive. Microsoft just closed the studio to the only good game they released in the past year (Hi-Fi Rush).

CrashMania1d 7h ago

They all suck as well of course. But MS spent 10s of billions on these publishers for mass consolidation, every made a song and dance about how MS would save them, using their endless Windows, 365 and Azure money to keep them open forever and how Phil was some hero.

Nothing is safe unless it makes money, even for MS.

romulus231d 7h ago

It is a big deal.

Microsoft has closed
Fasa Studios
Digital Anvil
Ensemble
Lionhead Studios
Press Play
Arkane Austin
Tango Gameworks

Einhander19721d 7h ago (Edited 1d 7h ago )

Wow how far back do you want to go back.

Lionhead Studios
Aces Game Studio
BigPark
Carbonated Game
Digital Anvil
Ensemble Studios
FASA Studio
Good Science Studio
Hired Gun
Microsoft Studios Japan
Microsoft Studios Victoria
Team Dakota
Xbox Entertainment Studios
Xbox Live Productions
Lift London
Access Software
Salt Lake Games Studio
Twisted Pixel Games
WingNut Interactive

And more before this, this was just their cuts during xbone era that Phil cut while he was at the head.

And some of those PlayStation studios were merged not closed, most of the UK studios were folded into each other.

Japan Studio was renamed to Asobi not closed, aAsobi was an internal team of Japan Studio the "closure" the press misinformed people about was more or less a name change, the studio is in the same building and when the change happened less than 5 people mostly leadership positions chose to leave the studio to form Bokeh Studio, which still works closely with Sony.

And even if your deflection stood on it's own, Microsoft spent 3 Billion 3 years ago almost to the date to buy Zenimax and has already closed 2 of it's biggest studios and decimated Zenimax's support studio structure.

It's no wonder Todd Howard was talking about "more frequent releases" and letting other studios make their IP's games. The days of big budget huge Bethesda games is over...

In fact sadly Microsoft has ushered in the end of big budget gaming as we know it with their obviously unsustainable subscription industry change.

And I feel fully confident that this isn't the end of studio closures from these recently purchased studios.

Abnor_Mal1d 7h ago

Ready At Dawn was never a Sony owned studio, and only made a few smaller God of War games and a Jax and Daxter spin off, and of course The Order1866.

They are currently owned by OcUlus Studios.

MrDead1d 7h ago

How many times has MS fired Bethesda staff since they purchased it? I think it's been three rounds so far

BehindTheRows1d 7h ago

Deflection is the finest form of delusion.

shinoff21831d 6h ago

London studio what have they made recently. Really the worst one was Japan studio. That sucked.

In reality though your deflecting. The fact of the matter is Ms just closed the studio that made their highest rated game in years. That's insane.

Hofstaderman1d 6h ago

Also many of those staff were absorbed into other studios.

VariantAEC1d 5h ago (Edited 1d 5h ago )

Ready At Dawn was never a PS first party studio.
Manchester was closed and it was proposed that London should be closed, but their website is still up with no news about it being closed on their official site anywhere. So it's possible that the proposed closure just did not happen to get fufilled. Meaning London Studio *MIGHT* still be open running lean.

Edit: Japan Studio was closed with some staff making up the new Asobi Team Studio who's first title was the PS5 pack-in game "Astro's Playroom." Pixel Opus was closed and not replaced or spun-off their only games were Entwined and Concrete Genie they also helped publish Journey according to Wikipedia.

Microsoft Survey Asks About Handheld

A new survey from Microsoft has further hinted at the possibility of an Xbox handheld being in development.

This is definitely happening, I just hope they have 2 versions one with a much bigger screen.

I'll be happy with this, and a PC console hybrid that rivals anything we have power wise

Number1TailzFan7d ago

The problem with bigger devices is playing them on your side in bed, Vita and before that was fine. Since the Switch you gotta have a gooseneck holder & controllers detached so you can lie down holding them, or your arm will quickly get tired.

crazyCoconuts7d ago

A Xbox version of Logitech G-Cloud?
I mean, why bother? Not like the G cloud is flying off shelves and what would Xbox add to make it better?
They're surely not going to create bespoke architecture here and there are already a few Windows handhelds out there. I have little confidence in their ability to put together an attractive UI in the way Steam did. So I doubt anything will come from this.

KicksnSnares8d ago

Day One buy for me if they'll make a dedicated handheld device.

darthv728d ago

i have that logitech g-cloud. Its a sweet little piece of kit. I like that it can also install games from the play store unlike the other android based handheld.

mudakoshaka7d ago

It sure is! Don't understand why you get the down-votes. Whoever does not like the G Cloud must have been dropped down a well, head first, when they were of a younger age.

PassNextquestion8d ago

I wonder if Microsoft will perform better in Japan if they do actually make a handheld since everyone says handheld and mobile are king over there.

TiredGamer8d ago

This looks like the future of the game industry... all three platforms with a handheld option.

I wonder if the Playstation Portal is a technology test-bed/prototype for a future Playstation handheld?

rlow17d ago (Edited 7d ago )

It’s a possibility but I can’t help but think would that be the best way to go about it? Though it would give you data on how much it is used and game type. It’s still not a true portable device and so people approach it differently. I think that data on phones, tablets, and of course the competition would give a better indication.

But I really think if Sony is considering a new PSP that could play ps5 games, now would be the time to dive in. Honestly, if they do this, it would be huge.

Traecy7d ago (Edited 7d ago )

Doubt if Sony PS wants to support a new handheld with first party games. Something they lacked with the Vita. What they should do is have a handheld that is like the PS Portal which can play all games but play those games on the go as well as at home. Something like that is a better investment.

TiredGamer7d ago

Agreed that you will probably never see a separate line of games specifically for the handheld (a la PSP or PSVita). The modern economics and expectations of game development make that cost prohibitive. What makes more sense is if the full-fat game on PS5 or PS6 has a special "handheld" profile that is automatically optimized for the lower spec handheld. There would be some significant compromises compared to the bigger console variant, but it would be the same game overall and would only require a single purchase.... somewhat what the Switch does with a lower resolution when playing handheld versus docked.
