I guess my take is that a complicated software architecture to combat some of the lag might still not be a good solution. On the handheld front, yea we have phones and tablets but they really aren't great gaming devices like the Switch/Vita/DS. At least not yet...
I don't think there's an implication that the traditional model of buying each game is going away. So you should still have a choice...
The optimization suggested (doing some things local while other things are done remotely) sounds complicated to me, like the cloud physics approach MS discussed for Crackdown. Doesn't sound like a handheld is in the works which bums me out.
For what it's worth I don't think Sony is going to give up it's lead after investing so much in it. VR might take off if the display is crisper, wireless, and the console has more power. My guess is that the PS5 will indeed support a new VR headset, and it will be backwards compatible with all the existing PSVR titles.
If next big thing is 5 years or so away then maybe. Current mobile and public WiFi bandwidth and reliability will keep this from becoming mainstream for the time being.
I think it's a fair price after all the enhancements. If gamers disagree they won't buy and HS will eventually drop the price. It's really a pretty unique experience even years after it's release...
Agreed. I hear some games like Destiny do. Fortnite has it on PC settings but I can't tell if it's working.
Either help with autoaim or maybe segment matchmaking between groups
My kids have Switches and I want to play with them on my PS4. Im not going to go out and buy two more PS4s and hook them up to two different TVs so that we can cross-play. I've since built a gaming PC so no issues but I can understand the conundrum.
I'm guessing the thing that is brewing now is different. Apple and Google own the most valuable platforms out there right now - our phones and tablets. In light of Switch's success I gotta think they'll make a play with some specialized phones/tablets and enhancements to the OS to integrate features we've grown to expect on our consoles (chat, achievements, friends, etc.). Seems like a no brainier especially if they have the $ to invest.
No way this is shipping in September
I don't know what's weirder - that he feels this needs to be said or that an article is written when he says it.
@Neonridr - there might be a policy that Sony has that states virtual goods bought on another market can't be used on the Sony platform. That's to protect their revenue stream. Epic didn't code for that (by supporting different characters) so to comply with that policy they just lock the whole damn account. Very good chance Epic knew that would look bad on Sony so they're sticking it to them. Reason MS and Nintendo allow this is because they're in a position to gain by sip...
Cheapest I've seen is 1 year for $99
@WickedLester I agree, it's a deeper issue than many people recognize for the platform holders. They're like a restaurant that doesn't let you bring in your food from another restaurant and sit at their tables. Seems reasonable to people in that context I imagine...
Agreed. And Epic is so active in the frequent updates and clever marketing (that asteroid thing was brilliant). There's always a fresh new game mode or something to keep players engaged. Epic is on top of it
So Shawn is doing the T-shirt thing now too? C'mon Shawn that's Phil's bag. Hope he doesn't adopt the sh@t eating grin too...
It impacted my kids accounts (they have Switches) and it really is an obnoxious situation. Thing people don't mention is that it's as much Epics fault as anyone. They knew the rules and didn't design for it. If they did what other games like Destiny and Battlefield does they would allow for different characters for different pkatforms, connected to the same Epic account.
That's a good point, but more recently LBP3 didn't seem successful in garnishing the same popularity, right? It's been a while since I checked it out but my kid wasn't seeing a great deal of community created content our there. My point is that sometimes great developers make great games / software and they don't do well because they're missing something or bad timing. And then you get those few like Minecraft and RoBlocks that just take the world by storm. LBP and Mar...
Totally. As simple as it seems to folks to just have them enable cross-play, it really is a pretty deep debate on what the platform means and how the platform owners make money.
@countchocula- how do you know that Sony didn't limit PSNow to PS4 because they just didn't have any customers on those other devices? I think it's very possible it just flopped in sales and it wasn't worth supporting any more.
