This powerful weapon is effective against almost every enemy. Read on to see how to get and use the Railgun in Helldivers 2.

Helldivers 2 is a squad-based cooperative shooter, developed by Arrowhead Game Studios and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. You can form squads of up to four people, and fight for the glory of Freedom, Super Earth, and Managed Democracy. Of course, other, alien factions are hell-bent on disrupting that goal. Helldivers are there to keep those aliens in line, by dispensing justice, violence, and explosives. But, sometimes, bullets and explosives are not enough, and Helldivers have to call in the big guns. One of the bigger guns a Helldiver can have is the Railgun. So, let’s see how to get and use the Railgun in Helldivers 2.

How to Get the Railgun in Helldivers 2?

To get your hands on this powerful dispenser of justice, you have to unlock it first. But, the Railgun is not unlocked as a regular weapon. Rather, it is a Stratagem that you unlock once you hit Level 20. Look for it on the Ship Management terminal on your Super Destroyer. Moreover, there is a small chance that you can find it during a mission, in a downed supply pod, or a similar POI.

Call it down using its unique code and a brand-new Railgun will be yours in no time.

How to Use the RS-422 Railgun?

A Railgun was one of the most powerful hand-held support weapons in Helldivers 2, but it has been nerfed so much that it is more in the “mid” area. It has to be reloaded between each shot, and it can have up to 20 ammo, so make every shot count.

Using a Railgun is quite unique. It functions as any other gun, ie, the right mouse button is for aiming, and the left mouse button is for firing (for PC, PlayStation users hold L2 to aim, and R2 to fire). But, to actually fire, you have to hold the left mouse button to charge up the Railgun, and then release it to fire the gun. Simply said, aim at your target, hold the fire button to charge the Railgun, and release it to shoot.

Railgun is great against tough targets without heavy armor. Its shot can even pass through several foes, making it a great weapon for dealing with Automaton Berserkers, who usually walk in a line, before they close in on you. Note that you’ll have to insert a new battery after every shot, as it does not have ammunition as most other weapons do.

But that is not all. A Railgun can be further improved by having the safety off.

HELLDIVERS 2 – Pre-Purchase – Super Citizen Edition – PC [Online Game Code]
  • BECOME A LEGEND – You will be assembled into squads of up to four Helldivers and assigned strategic missions. Watch each other’s back – friendly fire is an unfortunate certainty of war, but victory without teamwork is impossible.
  • LOADOUTS – Rain down freedom from above, sneak through enemy territory, or grit your teeth and charge head-first into the jaws of combat. How you deliver liberty is your choice; you’ll have access to a wide array of explosive firepower, life-saving armour and battle-changing stratagems… the jewel in every Helldiver’s arsenal.
  • REQUISITION – Super Earth recognises your hard work with valuable Requisition. Use it to access different rewards that benefit you, your squad, your destroyer ship and our overall war effort.
  • THREATS – Everything on every planet wants you dead. That’s what we’re dealing with. Each enemy has distinct and unpredictable characteristics, tactics, and behaviour – but they all fight ferociously and without fear or morality.

Safe vs Unsafe mode

Holding the Reload button on some weapons can give you additional options for it. Concerning Railgun, holding the Reload button lets you choose between Safe and Unsafe mode. Each Railgun “starts” in Safe mode, and is very powerful as is. But, if you need an extra punch, you can switch it to Unsafe mode. What does that do?

A Railgun in Unsafe mode can be charged even further, for a more powerful shot. We don’t know the exact numbers but a fully charged Unsafe Railgun deals around 50% damage more than the Safe one. But, there is a downside to all of this. If you overcharge the Railgun, ie. hold the button for too long, it will explode, killing you and potentially everyone around you.

In summary, an Unsafe Railgun is way more powerful, but you have to pay close attention to the charge build-up, to avoid blowing yourself up. Note that if you blow yourself up, the gun itself will be destroyed as well.
