It’s been a couple of weeks since the last huge patch for Helldivers 2 and after the initial spike in the number of players, the hype has dwindled. Now, the number of active players is at its all-time low and some sources insist on claims that Helldivers 2 is slowly dying. Well, we aren’t sure that’s true and neither is the dedicated player base.

Helldivers 2 Developers Subtly Address the Dying Claims

Don’t get us wrong, every game needs some fixes. So far, the developers of Helldivers 2 have been extremely communicative and cooperative. They claim they’re in it for the long run, and that Helldivers 2 will grow for many years to come. The developers often post about possible future plans.

On the morning of July 2, while casually chatting with the players on Discord, everyone’s favorite Community Manager, Twinbeard, confirmed the developers’ intentions. They said: “We’re planning to keep Helldivers 2 going for years to come, and will regularly release new content. As an example and as you might know, a new biome was released only last week. So yes, I can almost guarantee there will be new areas to play in going forward”.

Helldivers 2 players had a lot to say on this topic as well. It seems that the player base is very dedicated to the game and there’s just no way they’d give up on it any time soon. SublimeBear created a series of elaborate charts. They showed that even though the numbers were technically dropping, the base players were still active.

This player added: “If HD2 is dying, the industry has been dead and buried for years. HD2 outpaces its most direct competition (DeepRockGalactic) by over 30% in terms of player count and is outpaced by Warframe, a free and well-established game by around 30% itself and has been pulling 36% of current Destiny 2 player numbers”.

Dedicated Fans Stand By Their Beloved Game

Many other supporters jumped in to defend Helldivers 2 against the vicious rumors. Ryan K. Rigney (of League of Legends, Apex Legends, PUBG) stepped up to defend their colleagues. This Marketing Director praised the team behind Helldivers 2 and all of their accomplishments in a lengthy post.

Sklatscht explained the insignificance of the drop in the number of players. They reported: “Since at least 12 million copies have been sold, I think there is a huge amount of players that could return in waves depending on updates and patch releases. That sales number should also ensure at least another year of continuation no matter the player count (idk the costs involved for staff, servers, workforce, etc)”.

Of course, as with any other game, some players experience burnout. That could be one of the reasons behind the decreasing numbers. Usually, after a while, those players will return to the game. Just as a reminder, sometimes if you are feeling overwhelmed, or easily annoyed by a game, it’s more than fine to take a break.

No matter the claims, Helldivers 2 isn’t dying any time soon, so it will be there if and when you decide to come back. Meanwhile, with any new update or release, more players will join, making this game sustainable. The developers said they have big dreams for the future, and, honestly, we can’t wait to see what they have in store for us.
