Watch Dogs shifts almost no copies on its Wii U launch

In news that has shocked nobody, GFK has released information on sales numbers for the recent week of Wii U software. Dominating the list is Mario Kart 8 and New Super Mario Bros. U, with Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric squeezing in an unlikely third from unfortunately unknowing parents and grandparents. The biggest reveal from the charts is that Watch Dogs has placed 14th, failing to even make it into the top 10 on its launch week.

We should also consider that most adult gamers that would be drawn toward a game like Watch Dogs probably own more than one platform, and have probably already played it. Every person I know with a Wii U (including myself) has already played it. Just like we already played Mass Effect and Darksiders. They can't expect a game to come out months later on what is considered an alternate platform to many gamers and sell gangbusters.

EDIT: And this $60 late-launch re-launch pricing has got to stop. Whether it's Watch Dogs, Tomb Raider, Injustice, Sleeping Dogs, etc. Gamers need to protest with their wallets. A re-release port shouldn't cost $60 at launch. $40 - $50 was the model last gen. They're just milking the "new hardware" thing. I think it's disrespectful to gamers.

I will often rebuy a title on other platforms if it has the right enhancements. When I picked up my Wii U I grabbed Arkham and Splinter Cell. But after my experience with Watchdogs on the PS3 and the crap policies of Ubisoft lately, there is no way I am going to disgrace my Wii U with that game. Fool me once...

A lot of people have picked up the Wii U as a second console and do not need another dose of crap from Ubi to learn their lesson. For those who have the Wii U as their main or only console, they would have to have been living under a rock not to have witnessed the issues with Watchdogs and Ubi.

I would say many of them either have chosen not to get the game because of the game itself rather than due to preferences as a Wii U owner. Or possibly with Christmas sales on top of us they are simply being smart by waiting on a price drop. They know if you are going to buy a turd, even a polished one, at least be smart enough to get that stinker as cheap as possible.

@TheJackson and starchild, please don't confuse quantity with quality. Watch Dogs is your typical Ubisoft open world game, no more, no less. It got some over-inflated scores from the usual sites who see the words "open world" and "huge marketing budget", and the game gets an automatic 8 out of 10.

User opinion is much more divided, for many it's a game that does nothing really badly, but not much really well either. Bland, repetitive, characterless, thoroughly outshone by the likes of Sleeping Dogs and GTA 5. It's manufactured hype....and that's about it.

History has proved only that marketing works, and Ubisoft successfully marketed a mediocre game that recycled more than a little from it's own Assassin's Creed series. That doesn't make it quality, or deserving of success...it just means that bland formula still has legs in the market for people after a safe, AAA game that they're familiar with.

Wii U owners were made to wait a long time, and the console is home to a lot of high quality titles that, frankly, embarrass Watch Dogs in terms of gameplay, quality and polish. The mainstream that made up the bulk of those 9 million sales don't care about high quality, they care about slick marketing and safe games that don't challenge them too much. Watch Dogs fits that bill perfectly.

And more than likely WiiU owners got this game for 360/PS3. To release this game at this time made absolutely no sense. It was a bad business decision on Ubi.

I just hope Ubi doesn't see this as a "See, we tried" type of maneuver and decide not to support the WiiU because of lack of sales.

Those scores are hardly "mediocre". People discredit Watch Dogs way too much just because it wasn't the second coming of Christ like everyone hoped it would be. Of course, that was also Ubisoft's fault, who hyped this game to hell and back, it was ridiculous.

The same could be said about a lot of game releases this year that were actually good games, but people were expecting them to be the best games ever made, so now they love to trash talk them. Destiny, TItanfall, Assassin's Creed Unity, Driveclub. What's next?

Super late. Ubi said they no longer cared about Wii U months before hand and said Watchdogs be the last game they release not named dance something. Then release no screenshots 2 days before release then release it same week as smash. It's Ubi's fault. Can I just say that here in the UK Smash Bros is not released yet. And when I do pick it up with a few Amiibo characters it will be under the tree for Christmas. Until then I Will play Watch Dogs on WiiU as an alternative to GTA5 which I will never buy.
As a gaming addict I need the latest games...this is a bad time of year for me. I could have picked Watch Dogs up on PS4, but my HD is almost full. Watch Dogs is better suited to WiiU in my opinion.

I walked into GAME with money to burn on Sunday. Wall to Wall Grand Theft Auto and second hand Watch Dogs for PS4 in the corner.
I bought Watch Dogs on WiiU and I will tell you why...
If I bought it on PS4 I would have to install it on my HD (already nearly full) I cant play the game when kids are on telly so off Screen play on WiiU is perfect. And its really a last gen game. On wiiU it looks better than PS3 and Xbox 360.
I like that you can be a good guy and save people from being attacked etc.. In GTA5 you are bad all the time...No moral compass with GTA5
I am more than happy so far. I will never buy GTA5. And Watch Dogs is a good alternative.

Well it was Ubi's own fault, the way they've treated their fans on Nintendo's systems has been pretty crappy. The AAA titles coming out now aren't going to convert well, so why not just focus on making games that fit in with the Wii U, big multiplayer party games, and fun single player experiences that take advantage of the Wii U as a unique system. Watchdogs for Wii U was pretty much a stealth release. Indy games have received more press than this game. There was absolutely nothing showed about the game from Ubisoft almost as if Ubisoft didn't want you to remember they were still releasing the game for the Wii U. Actually the Watch Dogs DLC is on WiiU. Here in the UK there are two versions of the game for sale. Standard version £49 and DLC special version £59. The USA is so lucky that all of their games are cheaper..$60 is around £40 here in the UK

The general view of this game is that it's an underwhelming off-shot of GTA. This is supported by user reviews and professional reviews.

Another HUGE factor to consider is Ubisoft delayed the game to literally three days before Super Smash Bross 4. Their was NO marketing for the Wii U version. Not even a single god d*mn screen shot of the Wii U version.

Yeah, the game was not as great as anticipated...But TOO many were expecting some GTA killing giant...For where it released on XBOne & PS4, it was a good filler game, until the king of the block rehashed itself & showed up....But seeing Wii-U HAS NOTHING like this game (unless you include that open world Lego game), then Watchdogs should not be scoffed at, for the machine.... But, I'm guessing TOO many Wii-U owners are like myself, & already own another console, that they were able to get this game on months & months ago.

If this game suffers that bad in sales, Nintendo will also be kissing Ubisoft goodbye...& that would be a shame, as they are the ONLY HUGE 3rd party developer Nintendo seems to have. I love my Wii-U, but the fact is, there aren't many games that cater to my tastes, apart from Zombi-U, MarioKart, & Bayonetta 2.....I own more games than that, but have been bitterly disappointed with there direction...Mario has been a joke, either 2D 3DS crossovers, or pseudo 3D, Crash Bandicoot rip off's, like Mario World 3D...Yeah 3D my a$$. And it says something that Tropical Freeze is the BEST platformer on the system (along with Rayman..got both).... I just WISH Miyamota would start putting some effort into Mario games once again, & bringing back the magic that Mario64 encapsulated....Mario's since, have been average & outdone by other platformers...Either that, or move on to another IP, & stop talking crap about developers who are doing a FAAAAAR better job than you.

The reality is, Watch Dogs would have bombed hard on Wii U regardless of whether it came out on time or not. There's a clear pattern of poor third party sales ranging from Call of Duty and Splinter Cell to Tekken and Assassin's Creed on Wii U (games that came out on time, though Call of Duty was hurt by a stealth launches on Wii U, but the reality is it would have sold just as badly anyway because the fan base is not on Nintendo platforms to begin with). Even Nintendo's own published Bayonetta 2, a well marketed game, and probably deserving of game of the year, bombed hard on Wii U worldwide.

Anyway, the game deserved to sell poorly. It may be a AAA title but AAA has nothing to do with the quality of a game, just its marketing and development budgets. Ubisoft admitted the game did not live up to its own expectations (something they said similarly of Assassin's Creed 1). The fact that the game was delayed for months with a full retail price is Ubisoft's fault. The game shouldn't have even been in development for Wii U when it was clear that third party mature software is not ideal fit for Wii U's demographics. Most gamers do not buy third party support on Nintendo home consoles because they are mostly treated as supplemental consoles to a PlayStation, Xbox or PC platforms. Of course, it doesn't help that Nintendo is to ultimately blame for not making Wii U an appealing enough product to consumers. It has great exclusives, but understandably, it's just not enough for many people. GameCube had a chance to do it right, but Nintendo didn't handle the console's marketing well enough and underestimated the perceived consumer value of dvd playback. However, again, it boils down to demographics and Nintendo's home consoles have a clear indication of skewering toward a younger audience. Ironically, Nintendo of America's demographics data revealed, at least in the US, that based on eShop registrated members, most Wii U owners are overwhelmingly male and over the age of 17.

Some of us may have bought a good amount of third party software, including myself, but we are obviously in the minority. Nintendo cannot rely on its increasingly shrunken dedicated fan base even if it made a console that was on par with PS4 and Xbox One. The lack of mind share and demographics issues would have very likely plagued Wii U just as hard as it did with GameCube.

Reality is the user base for those games is on different consoles. If new IP launched on all the consoles at the same time it may have a chance, but if the game is in any way inferior on the Nintendo system why would someone who owns multiple systems, as many gamers do, choose to buy the game on the wii u?
The only game devs who can feel entitled to be angry at the wii u install base are probably THe most wanted U guys, Critiereon( i think) Who brought the pc port to Wii u and did not get the support from the publishers or Nintendo. The game still has major crash issues.

Quite frankly, Wii U owners aren't generally buying much of anything. Most Wii U players didn't buy Bayonetta 2 despite how good it is. Games like Demons and Dark Souls are also niche, yet they managed to be surprisingly successful, so there's no excuse why Bayonetta 2 bombed when it was fairly well marketed and one of the finest games of the year. Wii U owners just preferred not to play anything new on Wii U in October.

Heck, most of Nintendo's software on Wii U has not sold as well as Nintendo expected. Well, Mario Kart 8 performed well enough relative to its install base, but it failed at being a strong system-seller given how its one of Nintendo's top 3 biggest flagship IPs.

This is just another reason why the Wii U is and will continue to be a failure as a "next gen" console: it has zero variety in its game content and fails to attract any notable third party support. Watch Dogs OR I continue to keep playing Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2 and wait for Smash to arrive in a couple of days....mmm, decisions, decisions. Reviews aside for Watch Dogs - which were average if generous, Watch Dogs sold well because little to nothing else was available (games-wise) when it launched, coupled with the fact it was hyped to hell, falsely. I bought a Wii U and tried Sonic All Stars Racing Transformed and Zombie U. I thought they both had terrible graphics. My 6 year old laptop at the time produced much better 1080p graphics compared to those games on Wii U. I returned my Wii U as I was not happy with it.

Several reasons why this happened:

1) Nintendo gamers are a fickle and spiteful group- a late port after the Rayman debacle and previous ports with missing modes and lack of DLC was asking for trouble

2) The game was criticized by reviewers, so the hype was killed for any late ports

3) Smash Bros released at the same time

4) Most Wii U gamers own a PC, PS3, PS4, 360 or X1 also. Many interested gamers caved in already and bought the game on other platforms.

5) The Wii U owners that DO NOT own another console, do so for a reason- they don't care about AAA titles. If they did, they'd own a second console.

6) Ubisoft not only failed to run a single advertisement for this version, they didn't even release a single screenshot until a week from release. It's almost as if they did everything in their power to conceal knowledge of this game's existence.

Combine all of these reasons. Now ask yourself did anyone actually expect this NOT to happen?

With all that said, I bought Watch Dogs on Wii U day one. And I own all 3 consoles and both handhelds. I wanted the map on the gamepad and off TV play. And that's what I got, so I'm happy.

GFK is a market research company. Nowhere does the author point this out. He simply assumes you already know the background of this company. Much like the NPD Group they do not have direct access to Nintendo sales data. They must make estimates that do not include the entire retail market. (For the record, NPD only covers around 65% of US retailers.) And also like the NPD group, they only cover specific regions.

The author then covers his ass by saying "almost no copies." The truth of the matter is the game came in 14th out of a total of 20 listed games. Also, the exact totals are not listed. So there is no way the author can know that the game "shifted almost no copies." That proves his own bias.

Many of my friends that prefer the Wii-U over ps4 and Xbox are different type of gamers, different is good I think. I like story based games they like pure gamplay and quirky things (the majority). And the ones that do own a playstation 3 for example mostly play JRPG's, Ratchet and a little bit of COD.

The focus group on Wii-U that buys mature games is minuscule due to lack of 3rd party support so WD would've always struggled on that platform. Not since the Super Nintendo has there been a real presence of third party support.

I mean just look at the numbers, PC gamers love Diablo, Dota, WOW, Starcraft and indies. It is what it is, different preferences, different people. Nintendo gamers love those exclusives, even if its the same iteration of decade old franchises with different suger coating.
