Microsoft Clarifies Stance On Minecraft YouTube Monetization

"As we all know, Microsoft recently confirmed their $2.5 billion dollar deal to buy out Minecraft developer Mojang, giving them control over Mojang's best known release - Minecraft.

Since the deal was confirmed speculation was strife that Microsoft would not allow YouTubers to monetize their Minecraft videos. This would have been a huge blow for the Minecraft community as most YouTubers post their videos with the expectation that they'll be rewarded in monetary form for their creations." - TGC

In other words....Stop overreacting about everything MS does. They aren't out to hurt gamers. Hell they have their own office apps on every competing platform.

MrPink20133507d ago

If anything Nintendo is far more restrictive yet receive way less criticism.

nX3507d ago

Nintendo didn't try to force heavy DRM on us. Nintendo didn't pay 3rd party developers to prevent a release on other platforms. Nintendo didn't stop supporting their consoles in the middle of their life cycle. Nintendo is restrictive because they are trying to be unique - sometimes it's working, sometimes it's not - but they never made any huge anti-consumer decisions.

Orbertron3507d ago (Edited 3507d ago )

@Bloodborn

Wait so...

"Nintendo didn't try to force heavy DRM on us"

then go on to say

"Nintendo is restrictive because they are trying to be unique"

Seriously man what the actual bollocks are you talking.

Mr Pumblechook3507d ago (Edited 3507d ago )

I don't think Microsoft will restrict these Let's Play videos. However an unnamed help desk guy doesn't mean it's official. You need a Spencer or a Harrison to spell out their policy.

MrPink20133507d ago (Edited 3507d ago )

Bloodborn, Microsoft responded by not going through with those restrictions. Microsoft also listened to feedback on Kinect and now sells it without. Why isn't Nintendo selling the WiiU without the gamepad since many have said it's not even that necessary and just adds costs? The Gamecube also had a short shelf life so don't tell me Nintendo does a better job of getting games than Microsoft. Do you see the Wii getting more support of games than the Xbox 360? Forza Horizon 2 is coming and the system is what 9 years old now? What notable games are coming to the Wii?

What exactly has Nintendo done? They are the ones who are the most aggressive in protecting themselves on YouTube. They don't listen to feedback about what consumers want in online gaming. Aren't fans questioning them on localizing games? All we ever hear is we are sorry. They also keep trying to convince us they know how to stagger game releases and yet Wii U owners are left with huge gaps between releases of noteworthy games. Let me guess, it's not Nintendo fault either so many publishers are walking away from supporting their consoles.

nX3507d ago

@orberton
Being restrictive for your own ecosystem is worlds apart from implementing unnecessary DRM into your console.

Mithan3507d ago

@Bloodborn

Get a clue. The DRM they wanted to enforce on you is there now anyways.

Christ gamers are stupid.

gangsta_red3507d ago

@Bloodborn

We can tell you are new to gaming because it is obvious you have no idea how notorious Nintendo was back in the NES days.

I suggest you look it up, it is some great reading on how when a company is on top they basically do whatever they like to screw over the ones below.

Pogmathoin3507d ago

Bloodborn is getting a bloodbath.....

feedthereaper3507d ago

@Bloodborn

What DRM are you completely against? If you buy games legally and play them in the manner they are meant to be played, then what negative effect does Xbox DRM have for you? If it is about pre-owned sales then for some gamers they need to get their heads out of their backsides and realise no company in the world really gives a toss about your second-hand selling issues. They want you to buy a brand new product from them and enjoy it, not try and jump through hoops on how best you can re-sell it to someone else, or how you can get your hands on it for far cheaper/free contributing nothing to the original developer!

There is simply no DRM on the Xbox that negatively affects 99.8% of all legitimate, honest, law-abiding gamers!

MrPink20133507d ago (Edited 3507d ago )

History has proven Nintendo's track record of dealing with third party publishers to be poor. Remember that Nintendo seal of quality in the cover of NES games? That was all a ploy to control content and how many games publishers could release. All to give more breathing room for Nintendo titles.

Regardless of who had our has bad practices, the fact remains gamers are far more limited on Nintendo consoles for game content. Not only in software but also in the form of online gaming. That is clearly evident going back to the N64. A time when Nintendo still wanted to release expensive cartridges and broke off a deal with Sony. So Sony decided to make their own console and the rest is history. During that time we've seen mini disk games on the Gamecube because once again Nintendo wants to go their own route. All while coming out with gimmicks and inferior hardware with the Wii and WiiU. That's because Nintendo wants to be known as a family entertainment gaming company. Which is fine but it also explains why Nintendo consoles don't get as much support.

So while you criticize Microsoft for what they attempted to do the reality since then is quite different as the WiiU will continue to miss out on games like The Witcher 3 and Destiny. Nobody is questioning Nintendo own software as it is world class. It is the hardware they put it on and the poor relations they have with third party publishers and their non commitment to online gaming. And to be back on topic their desire to protect their intellectual property in the likes of YouTube and so on. Clearly much more than Sony and Microsoft.

It's also ironic you talk about what Microsoft planned with DRM. The Xbox One didn't go through with it but WiiU owners ARE having to go through the runaround trying to get access to their games and saves if the hardware fails. Think about that for a second. How does Microsoft and Sony handle your online accounts and digital software in comparison to how Nintendo does? So don't try and argue about what Microsoft could have done to what Nintendo is doing now.

GamingSinceThe80s3507d ago (Edited 3507d ago )

Even Sony is using DRM for the PS4.My net was out for six days after a storm last week and none of my PS Plus games would work without it.But my PS3 Plus games worked just fine.Fancy that?Sony can do what ever they want at the moment and the masses will still eat it up.But in the near future it will catch up with them.They seem content just trowing away all the good will that got them through last gen,and in first place at the start of this one.Sony and MS have switched roles for the time being and it's going to be bad guy Sony and good guy MS for a while.Nether company seems to rule well as king and forgets about the their loyal subjects as soon as they are sitting fat on the thrown.In the end they are all a bunch of greedy bastards who pretend too, but care about nothing more than are money.And should be treated as such.

ALLWRONG3507d ago

That's funny Bloodborn you should say that considering Sony is heaviest when it comes to DRM. Yup :)

FanboyKilla3507d ago

@bloodborn lol wow, that was a rage rant.

hazelamy3507d ago

as i recall they received plenty of criticism when they went after youtubers.

and nintendo don't make probably the most watched game on Youtube.

nodim3507d ago (Edited 3507d ago )

@Bloodborn Yeah, it's not like Nintendo would senselessly region-lock their consoles just because. As there is no real point and they are just trying to be uni-- Oh wait.

jrshankill3507d ago (Edited 3507d ago )

@Bloodborn

"Nintendo is restrictive because they are trying to be unique"

Surely this proves the hypocrisy in your statement, giving the subject matter of this thread.

So if Microsoft tried to be restrictive (which they are not, according to this news post) would you also say they are being unique?

Stop with the hate dude. Microsoft can do absolutely nothing right nowadays.

Add in Nintendo's region locks, their extremely harsh restrictive Youtube policy (seriously, a 5 second clip of the NES Mario theme gets a copyright warning) and their poor relationship with 3rd party developers means you really don't have an arguement here. People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

We could also question Nintendo's morals in the past.. especially with the NES. Nintendo required that they be the sole manufacturer of all cartridges, and that the publisher had to pay in full before the cartridges for that game be produced. Cartridges could not be returned to Nintendo, so publishers assumed all the risk. Because Nintendo controlled the production of all cartridges, they were able to enforce rules on third-party developers, which were required to sign a contract by Nintendo that would obligate these parties to develop exclusively for the system and only make five games per year.

Nintendo are absolutely no angels. In the past, they were more hellbent on monopolizing gaming than Microsoft ever was.

paul-p19883507d ago

@Bloodborn

"Nintendo didn't stop supporting their consoles in the middle of their life cycle"

New 3DS says hi!

Koff993506d ago

@Bloodborn

" but they never made any huge anti-consumer decisions "

What? " Nintendo was the first console maker to introduce regional locks to its consoles. " since the NES days and they're still doing it. PS3/PS4 and Xbox-one now all swicthed to be region free and Nintendo still sticking to that BS.

DOMination-3506d ago

I don't want to be rude.
But I'm going to be anyway.

Bloodborn is one dumb kid

JD_Shadow3506d ago

If anything, MS will probably try to make another tag and try to buy YouTubers out for positive coverage of the game if the tag thing from earlier this year is any indication (XB1M13).

nX3506d ago

"Lets bring up the NES days to prove my point in 2014"

"They aren't out to hurt gamers."

Tomb Raider says what.

TheRedButterfly3507d ago (Edited 3507d ago )

So I'm assuming you've never heard of something called third-party timed-exclusivity? Destiny says hi. Metal Gear Solid 4 says hi.

"They aren't out to hurt gamers."

This is correct. There out there to make a profit, like EVERYONE ELSE. However, it would seem like Sony isn't exactly doing a wonderful job at the whole "profit" thing... #2.1B http://www.bloomberg.com/ne...

JD_Shadow3506d ago

@TheRedButterfly:

The difference between something like MGS4 and Bayonetta 2, and something like Tomb Raider is that without the support of either the system specs or the actual funding that the game received from that system manufacturer, those games don't get made. MGS4 needed a LOT of what the PS3 was capable of doing, and even then, Kojima said that the BD disc wasn't enough to give him what he needed for his true vision. In Bayonetta 2's case, Sega needed the funding of Nintendo to have the game made, so you can't fault them for that. Destiny has exclusive CONTENT (which I will give you, but it's still not AS bad, and there's still a difference), but the game itself is not exclusive to the PS4.

What does a gamer, or CD, gain other than money and bragging rights, from TR being a timed exclusive? What did MS and CD gain from blatantly lying to the public about the nature of the exclusivity? Would the system be any better because of the exclusive deal? Think about that!

As for your link, we're talking about games division, and that link says that they have an issue with some products that some people don't even remember that Sony MAKES (I didn't even know that they were in the phone business). The guy did say that the PS4 is doing really well compared to the current competition.

bigpiece3506d ago

yet Nintendo region locks all there consoles......

OOMagnum3507d ago

Whats funny to me is that people actually beleived MS would be so stupid to do this.

aviator1893507d ago

Well, people like to jump to conclusions.
You really just have to think about it.
If Microsoft is perfectly ok with people monetizing games from their game studios division (halo, gears, forza, fable, etc.), why on earth would they be opposed to minecraft, a game with an especially monstrous youtube following.

GundalfDeGrej3507d ago

I think this is what made people worried: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/c...

"Enrolling in the Youtube partner program (or other similar programs), where you are entering into an agreement to get paid, is not allowed."

It's nice to see that this doesn't apply anymore.

Funantic13507d ago

No way is MS messing their money up. They're gonna sit back and rack money up from Minecraft users on all platforms.

nitus103507d ago

I can understand Microsoft getting money from people making a new Minecraft purchase or purchasing downloadable content but "racking up money from Minecraft users"? How else other than what I have just mentioned?

Keep in mind there are quite a few Minecraft clones available and some are almost as functional as the original Minecraft (eg "Minetest" - works natively on all platforms including Linux distributions).

Neixus3506d ago

It's no hating that people assumed that they'll remove monetizing. There are rules on the official Xbox site that taking paid for any youtube recording from their games, is not allowed.

I don't really know why it says that, when it's clearly allowed :S

spacedelete3507d ago

if Sony wanted to get out of their terrible financial situation its them that should have brought Minecraft as it would have raked in the money for them. MS are already filthy rich.

SouthClaw3507d ago

Didn't realize it was a crime to be a successful company and Microsoft should maybe donate some money to support a failing company? Yeah that sounds right...

spacedelete3507d ago

when did i say it was a crime ? i said MS already has enough money as it is. Minecraft would have helped Sony with their money problems. though there has to be anti competitive laws for big businesses buying all companies. who will MS buy next ? Take two so they can stop GTA and RDR from being on PS4 ? MS be like "so you won't buy our underpowered console we will stop you from playing games on yours".

DanteVFenris6663507d ago

You do realize Microsoft had to pay 2.5 billion dollars. It was an investment they won't be ranking in the money tell who knows how long 5, maybe 10 years. And who knows if minecraft will still be as big. 2.5 billion sounds like a bit of a risk to me on a game that's gotten stale for a lot of users

gamerfan09093507d ago

MS's accountants have already said they will make back the 2.5 billion by june of next year. Besides that the 2.5 billion is from their off shore money that they had to spend to avoid getting heavy taxes.

jukins3507d ago

Even longer. Look at mojangs profit last year it was around 150 million. That was there best year ever. Assuming they profited that every year it would still take 15 years to recoup that 2.5 billion.

Antifan3507d ago

Space Engineers are on the track to fully replace Minecraft all together. I'm not interested in Minecraft anymore if Jacob and Notch are not involved.

MeliMel3507d ago

Actually, MS said that money will be made by nxt yr sometime.

DOMination-3506d ago

Notch hasn't been involved for a year now...

And where do you think they would have gotten the 2.5 billion?
If Sony is mismanaged it's MS fault? N4G logic.

Gunstar753507d ago

I doubt Sony could afford it.

TheRedButterfly3507d ago

Microsoft just purchased Mojang/Minecraft for $400,000,000 MORE than Sony is losing this fiscal year... There's a reason that Sony hasn't been making these kinds of purchases, and it's the same reason they're pushing indies so hard - because AAA is expensive, and Sony ≠ disposable income ATM.

King of Fighters 94

Infinite but not the first two games? Witcher 3 but not the first two games?? GTA V but not literally any of the games before it??? Portal 2 but not the first? Also if you're going to play Shadow of The Colossus play the remaster and not the remake. Can't say I disagree with the list but my man it's all over the place.

Name Last Name44d ago

I mean some sequels are objectively better and you don’t need to play the whole series.

Inverno44d ago

But most of these games have a story to follow, sure you can catch up with a YouTube vid but where's the fun in that?

LucasRuinedChildhood44d ago (Edited 44d ago )

A list like this isn't telling you not to play the previous games if you want to. It's just giving you legendary games to play.

But tbh, you don't always have to force yourself to play every entry in a franchise to get to the better ones.

- The vast majority of Witcher 3 players never played the first 2 and had a great time. The first 2 games aren't in the same league.
- The GTA games are self-contained with the odd fun reference. You can easily jump into any of them.
- The Shadow Of The Colossus remake looks and controls better than the original (plus it has a 60fps option while the remaster is just 30fps). New players will enjoy it more.
- Portal 2 is a lot better than Portal 1 and takes the concept much further gameplay-wise. Storywise, Portal 1 is fairly light too. Not that you shouldn't play it but realistically ... you'd love Portal 2 whether you play it or not (at lot of Portal 2 players have never played 1).

Bioshock 1 is the only one I agree with you on simply because it's one the best games of all time and arguably better than Infinite. No other setting like Rapture.

Looking at the list, I'd recommend playing Uncharted 1 before 2 but no doubt, 2 is the legendary one you have to play.

Inverno44d ago

I get it, but that's just my opinion on his opinion. I just think that before you play a sequel you should still play what came before it. Maybe it's just me but i find it fascinating playing through the first game in a series and seeing how it has evolved through its sequels. Like I said I don't disagree with the list, other than SoTC which I strongly believe the remaster of the original should be played above the remake.

AuraAbjure44d ago

Awesome list! Hot take on Fear (and it's hard af expansion Persaus Mandate!) Bioshock Infinite is stellar, so is the Witcher 3 and you nailed it by having Ocarina of Time. So many fantastic games! Gotta play 'em all! Next one on my list is Prey after I beat Dead Space 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.

Minecraft Bedrock Introduces Official Add-Ons To Marketplace

Minecraft Bedrock is introducing add-ons to the marketplace. The add-ons can now be added to many existing and new worlds.

Jin_Sakai64d ago (Edited 64d ago )

Nice! Next up, shaders on consoles.

“A new update is improving how mods work for Minecraft Bedrock. Mojang has introduced add-ons to the marketplace.”

“These add-ons can now easily be added to new and existing worlds instead of being tied to a single world.
There are plenty of free and paid add-ons that will let you customize just about anything in your world.”

So RayTracing is no longer locked to the NVIDIA maps? I know there was a workaround, but it will be nice to have easier access to all worlds.
