I Guess PlayStation Move Died a Quiet, Unloved Death

Even Sony bosses are talking about the Move in the past tense, which means the motion-sensing device is done, right? Guess it just fizzled out.

So after spending $150 on the Move/Nav combo, the Eye Camera, and the Sharpshooter I need to spend ANOTHER $150+ on Morpheus just to use the stuff that I already bought?

Damn! Early Move adopters like me got screwed. At least now I have a reason to actually keep my Move peripherals, but Sony effed up. Move was released way too early in order to compete with Kinect.

Abash3554d ago

Yeah....believe it or not.... you'll have to spend more money for a completely different product that does virtual reality.....5-6 years after you bought your PS Move launch bundle and Sharpshooter...

LOGICWINS3554d ago

Not everyone desires VR. SOME of us would like the option to play hardcore PS4 games using Move WITHOUT Morpheus.

fr0sty3554d ago

Yes, but such is what happens when you are minority. If the sales are not there to justify support, the support will go elsewhere. Sony sees potential for Move to take off again with Morpheus, so they will support it there, but they didn't with traditional games. You can't fault them for knowing when something isn't working and doing something about it.

The market moved away from motion control just as fast as it latched onto it.

Silly gameAr3554d ago (Edited 3554d ago )

I don't feel like I got screwed and I bought everything you did minus the sharpshooter.

I played the hell out of my Move. RE5 GE, Killzone 3, Deadspace, Ecochrome II, Sorcery, Socom 5, and more. I feel like I got my money's worth. And, of course you will have to pay for Morpheus. That's new hardware. Were you expecting it for free?

Then again, I'm talking to Logicwins, sooooo.

MRMagoo1233554d ago

Funny you say how expensive it is , I just the other week got the move plus navigation controller and the ps3 camera for $17 all up in australia that's about 12 usa dollars how us that expensive ? Would have been cheaper but my playstation eye was broken and I had to get another for $3 lol.

maniacmayhem3554d ago

It will be a miracle if the Morpheus cost as low as $150.

For some new tech with a built in screen I'm going to say at least $300. And that's cutting Sony some slack.

KwietStorm_BLM3554d ago

You don't NEED to do anything. It's 2014. If "early adopters" still complain about getting screwed with ANY tech these days, I've got a story to tell you. And Move was competing with the Wii, not Kinect.

ShinMaster3554d ago

@ LOGIC

Who's forcing you to play hardcore games with Move or Morpheus?

Morpheus is built for ps4, ps move was built for ps3.

TheSaint3554d ago

My GF still uses it from time to time, especially when I'm away for a day or two.

MariaN4G3554d ago

Playstation move was a flop anyways.

HeWhoWalks3554d ago (Edited 3554d ago )

By this metric, ALL 7th generation motion controllers were flops. From a different angle, they didn't flop at all, as they prolonged their respective console's lives (or were the sole reason for such break out success).

In hindsight, if any of them TRULY flopped, it is the Kinect. It's the only one to offer a continued message - a message unrealized. It had the most potential going forward, but was re-released in a way that just couldn't sustain the interest.

Thus, depending on how you look at it, they either all flopped, all succeeded, or worked when/where they were supposed to and little else.

Death3554d ago

I would say the Wii motion controls which started it all were very successful. In fact they are still being used today with the WiiU, but not to the same extent.

Kinect was the most commercially successful addon released. It failed to live up to the hype and Kinect 2.0 hasn't done anything to change peoples perceptions.

Move like Kinect was rushed to market to try and capture some of the Wii's momentum. Sony supported the device even less than Microsoft did Kinect. The Vita hasn't exactly received proper support either which is a shame since it is a really great handheld with a lot of potential.

HeWhoWalks3554d ago

@ Death: Actually, motion controls started with the EyeToy, but you know, never became a hit till the Wii released.

Imalwaysright3554d ago (Edited 3554d ago )

Actually, motion controls started with Le Stick. It was released more than 30 years ago.

Death3554d ago

The original eyetoy was a webcam.

HeWhoWalks3554d ago

@ Death: No it wasn't. It was Sony's first attempt at motion controls. Seriously, go look it up.

sloth33953554d ago

@HeWhoWalks guess you never heard of the power glove from nintendo

HeWhoWalks3554d ago (Edited 3554d ago )

@ sloth3395: Indeed, I have. I don't recall it being a motion control device, however (and being that it wasn't very successful, it wasn't on the tip of my thoughts).

I was talking successful motion control devices. The EyeToy was an inspiration to stuff like Kinect, for example.

Edit: I went and took a look at the history of The Power Glove. Seems it DID control limited motions of a character on screen, so you are, indeed, correct. It failed, however, because it wasn't intuitive and didn't successfully portray what Nintendo was going for (though, also news to me, some of its technology was retained to be a part of what became the Nunchuck and Wii-Mote).

Learn something new everyday! :)

I'm glad I just got socom 4 and not the socom/move bundle.

So I guess I got half screwed.

poor_cus_of_games3553d ago

Hey incredible troll you afraid of a serious discussion?

PickAShoe3554d ago

I bought wonderbook with playstation move, it was boring.

WeAreLegion3554d ago

I disagree. I enjoyed it, immensely.

MRMagoo1233554d ago

Yeh I got my son the wonder book along with the harry potter magic one and the digg detective one, I myself want the walking with dinos one, they work very well with the device and are great for kids or adults alike.

crazysammy3554d ago

I think it was the best of the 3 (Kinect, Wii, and Move) but it was still a lame boring attempt at interactive gaming. I got hyped up as well and again while it was the best of the 3, it still stunk.

Godmars2903554d ago

More like it was shoved into the grave.

My all counts worked better than Kinect but not as diverse overall.

Also apparently a bad sub for a gun light.

Microsoft once tried to nab LittleBigPlanet from Sony after a few drinks

Microsoft had a good idea but fumbled it again.

Cacabunga3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Project Spark idea was decent but they quickly gave up ..
LBP was wonderful

ApocalypseShadow4d ago

Microsoft in a nutshell. Always tried to poach Sony employees, games, 3rd party games and devices like the depth camera that was turned into Kinect but was running on PS2 before Xbox 360. Wouldn't be surprised they wanted LBP. Just like they worked behind the scenes pushing the MLB to bring Sony's baseball game to Xbox instead of making their own.
https://www.playstationlife...

They didn't spend years trying to develop their own baseball game. They wanted Sony's game.

They're scum.

Zachmo1823d ago

Microsoft didn't force MLB on Xbox. MLB gave Sony 2 options either go multiplat or risk losing the license.

Rynxie2d ago

And why do you think MLB said that? I believe Ms approached MLB.

ApocalypseShadow2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Totally ridiculous comment.

The only exclusivity Sony had was to their own creation of The Show. Microsoft could have paid the MLB for the license just like Sony did and made their own baseball game.

Microsoft instead, groomed MLB for years in trying to poach Sony's game and bring it to Xbox. They're worth 3 TRILLION dollars. You think that's not enough money to make their own baseball game? Don't be delusional.

Microsoft spun it like they always do and told the media that they had to trust Sony with their hardware. After they put Sony in that position of not having a choice. Either go multiplatform or stop making one of their successful games. That's a no win scenario.

And what did Microsoft do? They didn't try to sell the game to the Xbox community. They put it on game pass to hurt Sony. Pushing the idea of why buy games that are $70 when you can play them in their cheap service for $10. It was a dirty tactic.

You fell for the Kool aid drink Microsoft served you instead of spitting it out. Hope it tasted good because you were fooled by Phil and the gang.

Xbox executive Sara Bond has told Axios that Microsoft spent a number of years trying to get MLB The Show onto Xbox consoles. And when it finally succeeded in breaking off PlayStation’s long-held exclusivity, the company had to “trust” Sony with pre-release Xbox Series X/S consoles.

Bond revealed that MLB The Show “always came up” in conversations between Microsoft and the Major League Baseball organization. “We always said, ‘We love this game. It would be a huge opportunity to bring it to Xbox.'” she recalled. However, when Microsoft’s efforts materialized, it put the company in an awkward situation where it had to send in pre-release consoles to a rival company.

Lying to yourself is unbecoming.

Article link tells you all you need to know in Sarah Bond's own words.

Hereandthere2d ago

They were too cheap/inept/lazy to develop their own mlb game, so they port begged for years and bribed the mlb to make the show multiplatform. Like i said many times, xbox brought nothing to the table their 24 years, ZERO.

ApocalypseShadow1d 20h ago

At least you and others get it. Note drank the Kool aid and asked for seconds thinking it was refreshing.

Most don't even know how it all played out but it's there in black and white for all to see. Microsoft brought it up for years until the MLB forced Sony's hand. It was a win win for Microsoft. Kill one reason to buy a PlayStation or kill the game by dropping it in a cheap service to kill Sony's sales numbers on PlayStation.

"However, Healey said Media Molecule wouldn't have felt right doing that, adding it would have been "morally corrupt"."

Major kudos to Media Molecule for being an upright studio with principles.

Cockney1d 14h ago

They chose well, Sony gave them the backing to pursue their dreams with no restrictions even tho their games especially dreams have very niche appeal. Media molecule and Sony deserve respect for this in an age of risk averse publishing.

RNTody3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Great, more stories like this please. Show the last of the zombies holding the line what we've been saying for years: Microsoft is anti competition, anti industry and has no interest in making games at all.

But hey, at least there's an Xbox Games Showcase to look forward to, right?

Inverno3d ago

Well considering SONY just killed the series, LBP would've been dead by now either way. Though MM probably wouldn't exist by now either, so I'm glad they stayed with SONY, hopefully they don't get shut down any time soon or ever honestly.

Inverno3d ago

They shut down the servers, that's millions of user created levels gone. That and dead are pretty much the same, it's also been years since 3 and they cancelled HUB soooo.

2d ago
fsfsxii2d ago

They shutdown the servers because no one was playing, no one in the community cared about the user created levels so why keep them up? Wtf you guys would never succeed in running a business.

Inverno2d ago

Yea dood no one was playing so they shut off the servers. Cause people with enough common sense can't just Google why they were actually shut of, right?
