PS4 Lead Architect Talks Whether We'll See Another Console Generation

IGN: "Mark Cerny has revealed he thinks it's ludicrous how readily people are discussing whether we'll see another console generation so soon after the launch of the latest one."

November 2019 launch

Darkstares3575d ago

We will see a new Nintendo system within 3 years but it is unknown what Microsoft and Sony will be doing after these systems. Sony looks to be getting into providing services like Playstation Now.

One thing is for sure, the PS3 and XBox 360 have made this new generation fall behind. Many games are still cross generation. The other issues surrounding the new consoles are so many games have slipped into next year while the focus has shifted to indie games. Last but not least is PC gaming has already eclipsed what these new systems are capable of at a reasonable price. I think this is the first time this has happened.

loulou3575d ago

Microsoft will definitely not be waiting until 2020 for a new console. Sony are going to annihilate them this gen, so I think that they will launch early like they did with the 360.

5yr Max cycle this gen for them... I am expecting a new Xbox in 2017 myself

Dee_913575d ago

yea I think this gen will be shorter than the last 2..The next gen systems (ps5 xb2) may be here for awhile i'm betting close to a decade

zeuanimals3575d ago

@Loulou:

If MS does a 2017 launch, they're only going to reinstill the notion (which can be argued as true) that they don't support their consoles fully for very long.

That's a 4 year life for the Xbox One unless they're going to continue to support it after the new Xbox is out, which I doubt they will. That doesn't build much confidence among gamers. And if they do come out with one in 4 years, it'll be really half-baked and the devs they put to work for it won't be working on the Xbox One, meaning the Xbox One's last big games will be in 2016 and maybe 2017.

That won't happen. 2019 at the earliest.

16bitNutritionist3575d ago

@Zeuanimals,seeing as the 360 will be ten years old next year and still going strong I think u need to just be quiet.

3574d ago
elhebbo163574d ago

I hope so, If this console gen is stretched as long as the last one we are gonna keep getting more console parity BS on PC.

UltraNova3574d ago (Edited 3574d ago )

@16bitNutritionist

Really?

Ok name one more game released on the 360 except Titanfall, the last 3 years that appropriately (as in AAA exclusive) covers the term 'support'. Please don't bother with Kinect games for Christ's sake!
.
.
.
.

Still thinking about it? Well don't bother.

If you are going to put the words MS, xbox and support in the same sentence you better be 100% sure about it. Zeuanimals has every right in the world to doubt MS in that department.

OT: I think we will see exactly the same thing we saw this gen. The ps5 and xb2 will be cost effective mid-level machines (for their respective time)just like the ps4 and xb2.

Not that its a bad thing (most of the time) but I dont think we will ever see a ps3 again, which for its time was technologically ahead costing 800+ to built and sold at a 25% loss...

Those days are long gone.

zeuanimals3574d ago (Edited 3574d ago )

@16bit:

Still going strong? It lost all of its steam in regards to 1st party in 2010 with nothing but the same 3 games being put out. Is that what you really call "going strong"? Sure, they're big franchises that sell very well but there was no variety with their games from that point forward.

Ryse was supposed to be the game to "justify" the Kinect and there are signs pointing towards DR3 starting as a 360 game. They moved a ton of development towards the Xbox One and left the 360 dry for its latter years.

Last year in particular was horrible for the 360 in the exclusives department with nothing notable except for State of Decay. There was Gears of War Judgement but that game was a disgrace to the Gears franchise.

Wake up from that nightmare.

Magicite3575d ago

That would be too soon. Console gen must last at least 5 full years, so not sooner than fall of 18/19

kneon3575d ago

Things have changed though, the rate of technological advancement in terms of performance/price is still accelerating.

And now that they have gone with an almost PC architecture I expect that they will be able to release a new gen sooner if they find a need to do so and they can get backwards compatibility for next to nothing.

Ark_3575d ago (Edited 3575d ago )

@kneon

If they all stick with PC architecture, they have to differentiate themself much more imo. There is no need to for branded PCs. Could go all pure software then and release their now exclusive games for a wider audience.

That's what I appreciate Nintendo for; they implemented a new controller-scheme for fresh ways to play games (Wii and WiiU). Btw I appreciate the idea of kinect etc. as well, although they made it available for PC.

Boody-Bandit3575d ago

Fall 2018 is 5 years.
Early on before the X1 or PS4 was released both Sony and MS said this generation will be shorter than last. Last gen was the longest in decades. I see new consoles hitting retail 2018.

Brettman20083575d ago (Edited 3575d ago )

No way, about 2020/2021 I think. The use of compute will much improve graphics in a few years or so.

BillmadeAGate3575d ago

More like 2023. Apparently the guys at sony think this system will be relevant for ten years!! It might be if sony keeps copying ideas, Hopefully Project morpheus isnt a complete ripoff of oculus as PlayStation Move was a ripoff of wii. Now we got PlayStation tv a complete Ripoff of apple tv with added features.. im almost certain along the line Sony will ripoff another idea again.. btw PlayStation now = On Live

Gamingcapacity3575d ago

People get confused with the 10 year life span thing.

What they mean is that they aim to support a console for 10 years. What this also means is that the support for a console can overlap another. For instance the PS3 is still being supported now while they have their newer console out.

And this copying thing, you are being completely ignorant to how tech evolution works and what Sony has done for the tech industry. They are the pioneers for many ideas. Google it.

sin72793575d ago

btw=BillmadeAGate= stupid troll!

welly3003575d ago

Because no other companies copy sony ideas lol.

sinspirit3575d ago

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Sony had a Move-like controller planned since early PS2 days.

Sony has had head mounted displays for a long time and has pushed it harder than anyone until Occulus came out.

PSTV is not a ripoff of AppleTV. Lol, what. There have been multimedia boxes before AppleTV, and they are putting the same multimedia functions of their past devices into this one box, with native PSVita game support, as well as PSNow streaming.

Copying happens in the tech industry. If you don't implement the same things that the competition implements then you lose. Simple as that.

It's clear you're just typing anti-Sony things with no thought, whether you're serious or think "trolling" is just acting like an idiot. "Trolling" is actually when you do something clever and funny, typically with good timing and reference to something. Not saying stupid things that you know people will reply to.

ZerobyZero3575d ago

With playstation tv you can use remote play and play ps4 games

Yahdaree3575d ago (Edited 3575d ago )

@Bill
This is the dumbest shit I have ever heard.

Are you new? There are few companies out there that spend more money on R&D than Sony. The battles they have been in for forty years. Some they have won and some they have lost. Betamax vs VHS, HD DVD vs BluRay, ever heard of the Walkman? Plus there's always the reason why they even made a Playstation to begin with... because Nintendo tried to screw them over. I have seen some pretty dumb comments on here but geeze.

s45gr323575d ago

That's the issue right there PlayStation Now will render consoles obsolete, PlayStation tv buries say consoles, and the morpheus makes gamers wonder what's the point of a console. The consoles are pretty irrelevant at this point

I wouldn't be surprised with 2018. But we not not even get another generation of tradional consoles. We have no idea which way the industry will go over the next 5 years. This is what what Mark Cerny explains about.

Future_20153575d ago

these new consoles are so underpowered compared to when the ps3,xbox 360 came out, multi plat games are not even running on ultra settings compared to the pc, and some are not even running at 1080p which just shows lack of GPU power. I saw on linus tech tips where they compared a gtx 480 to the new consoles on benchmarks and the 480 which came out 4 years ago beat them

BattleN3575d ago

Consoles should be the least of our worries, when the current pope Fancis is said to be the last and worst pope that signals the final confrontation between good and evil. So we could be near that great and terrible day of the Lord! A scary thought is this, we will all one day see one another at the Judgement if it's real, which I happen to believe it is!!!

Well we are running out of resources. The global climate is changing at a rapid pace. Coastlines will be lost and new ones made in the next 100 years.

Temperatures by then will be unbearable for us. We will need even more resources to run AC units and furnaces, as summer and winter twmperatures hit the extremes.

Greater destruction from much more violent weather will cripple economies of the world.

Yet we depend more and more on fossil fuels.

The Human race is teh doomz. Not because of God, but because of our own greed and ignorance.

Akarogg 3574d ago (Edited 3574d ago )

We must trust in the Lord Almighty during these times of change. Let us not bury our heads in despair, but look upwards to the sky and hold on to our belief in man's continued evolution.

nunley333574d ago (Edited 3574d ago )

I've heard this too and it isn't a bible bash, it's about the pope which many catholics don't like. He could be the fabled anti-pope with all signs pointing to this but life will go on though here regardless of what he does here. I believe some of that stuff but i don't sit around worrying about it. I'll be inside gaming when outside the apocalypse chaos is going on outside. I agree with alot what @indoAssassin said the climate change isn't man, it's due to a hotter sun.

If the big 2/3 stick to an amd PC architecture there is no reason why we cannot have new hardware every 3 to 4 years. We might see a big shift with games being released cross gen perminantly. After all they are already building a scaled version of the game for PC so its not totally crazy to consider more frequent hardware updates. Its not like the old days when new systems were these alien beasts. Its not quite this simple but essentially they are just a spec of PC that a hell of a lot of your userbase has.

3-4-53575d ago

* Nintendo NEW Handheld = 2017
* New Nintendo Console = 2018
* New Sony Console = 2019 PS5
* New Xbox Console = 2020

nunley333574d ago

So you think Sony will release the PS5 a year ahead of the xbox next? Ms won't wanna do that likely. I hope nintendo holds off till then to release it's next console but 3ds2 could be a fall 2017 release with 3ds bc card slot.

starchild3575d ago

Nope. AAA games cost so much to make and developers are going to want more time with these consoles in order to recoup their investments. They're going to want to have several games in each series this generation.

ITPython3575d ago

Technology grows exponentially, not linearly. I think the next-gen consoles will show their faces much sooner than previous generations, and will be even cheaper.

I bet it will come to a point where new consoles are released annually or bi-annually.

TheWow3575d ago

Don't see why you're getting downvoted into oblivion. Many have the same opinion, especially if there are innovations like 4K gaming becoming affordable. If current gen consoles can push high/ ultra graphics but at limited framerates / resolution, then that's definitely going to become more of an issue as time goes on.
Bear in mind that while we will see optimisations on games, it's not going to happen to the extent it happened with last gen consoles at all.
Thus, it's a very reasonable assumption that the consoles will last about 4 or maybe 5 years.

bennissimo3574d ago

Good. All I know is that these next consoles better be B/C.

sk8ofmnd3575d ago

I doubt they will. Every next gen playstation is so more advanced it makes todays system looked at like ancient technology. Look at the innards of the ps3. I think thats why nintendo is able to do it because the wii and wii u arent drastically different. I think I read somewhere the wii u is 2.5 times stronger than the ps3. Dont get me wrong that would be a huge selling point if the ps5 was bc. I at least thought the ps4 would play ps1/2 games. It should have the power to emulate. But something tells me by then they might have a better Infrastructure and internet capabilities to stream mayb for ps+ members. Mayb a ps+ platinum type service. Im sure ppl would pay for that.

Jaqen_Hghar3575d ago

no upgrading has nothing to do with BC. If PS4 uses an X86 architecture it doesn't matter if the CPU is 10x more powerful or there's 32gb of RAM it will still most likely be BC

azricf3575d ago

6years max for this gen please. 8+ years was waayyy too long for last gen.

SpadeX3575d ago (Edited 3575d ago )

It was long but 2013 was a really good year for PS3, it had a bunch of awesome exclusives.

sprinterboy3575d ago

Yes, but those could have been made for PS4. Gran Turismo and Beyond should have for sure. It would have helped the game drought.

BillmadeAGate3575d ago

My real question is how long before last gen is completely outdated like ps2 or OG Xbox. I heard ms say 3 years which was last year so in 2016 last gen will be unsupported ? Im only wondering because were never gonna get a truly next-gen experience if developers keep doing cross gen games.. why hold back the hardware ? Why not have a different team create the last gen game like titanfall and Shadow of Mordor have done... im at a point were if the game is cross gen I feel its not fully built with next gen in mind.. this is my problem =/

Menkyo3575d ago

With devs like Ubisoft reporting that they sold 27% (3.4 million copies) on current gen and 17% (1.3 million copies) on last gen, I think we will finally start seeing cross gen fade and it better if they really are going back to a five year life cycle.

zerog3575d ago

No, he ment they stopped supporting the 360 3 years ago. Did you not see the lack of exclusives during that time?

Sitdown3575d ago

Why was last generation too long? I actually prefer longer generations, because it can force developers to be creative in order to sell their titles.... While also having a larger install base. Too short of a generation puts us right back at cross gen titles.

MegaRay3575d ago

This generation should last 9 years since each game take 3 years to produce, unless people like to have TLG and FF XV situation all over again...

Jaqen_Hghar3575d ago

a man likes longer gens so that's fine and expects new consoles around the time 4k becomes affordable as that can be their main selling point

sinspirit3575d ago

Taking 3 years isn't always the case, and development cycles don't all begin at the same time.

Jaqen_Hghar3575d ago

The way a man sees it PC gamers are always talking about how much consoles are dragging behind. That means there's still room for a big improvement. The cost of those components will eventually come down ergo we can have $400-500 consoles one day with those powerful of components and the PC will naturally go ahead paving the way for next gen.

Also we still have 4k to reach on console gaming which won't be possible for a few years at a reasonable cost. This means that once the 4k TV base is built up and the components to render games in 4k go down we can have a generation all about 4k.

Also people go where the games are. As long as devs are going to next gen hardware people will still buy it and as we saw with this generation people are willing to buy new things very quickly after 7-8 years of playing on the same console even when most games are multiplats. People buy new phones every 2 years and do basically the same thing on them as the last one. By comparison the upgrade on console generations is both cheap (because you do it far less frequently) and astronomical (because they actually improve the specs exponentially like 16x jumps in RAM) so it's a much easier sell than a new tablet or phone in a man's opinion.

s45gr323575d ago

A 4k console will end up in the $600.00-$700.00. Streaming games from the cloud will become the norm 3-4 years from now. Specifically now with PlayStation Now releasing and picking up from were Onlive left off

Jaqen_Hghar3574d ago

that's why you wait till it's affordable

Kavorklestein3574d ago (Edited 3574d ago )

I think that these companies just need to make more future proof versions of their consoles (like maybe making them cost 1,000 dollars, but make them have more power than you could possibly "need" during that gen) OR, maybe make these consoles built with external hardware expansions for ram/storage/gpu's add-ons in mind, that can be bought later if a console is suffering impaired visual fidelity, or suffering form storage limits.

THEN , they could make a console worth the money, AND make it last, and stay powerful for 10 years.

But, they aren't trying to make consoles that save you money, they are trying to ensnare a fanbase that will buy whatever they release, regardless of prices or quality, Similar to what Nintendo has done over the years.

Chimichanga3574d ago

But then you no longer have a console, you have a PC with a bunch of different additional options to nickel and dime the customer. Developers wouldn't be able to optimize for the console either because there would be so many different variations.

Kavorklestein3574d ago (Edited 3574d ago )

@chimichanga -
That's the thing bro.

The companies wouldn't want any and all types of expansions to be compatible, THEY DON'T want to make a PC. They want to upgrade their Product ONCE each generation, to keep it relevant for a longer time without going back to the drawing board to make a completely new system at high cost for Research and Development etc... they would want ONE type of proprietary expansion, for example:

PS4+ 8 gb of GDDR5 Ram MADE BY SONY, ONLY COMPATIBLE WITH PS4 and vice versa... giving 16 total, and they release it at the END of the lifecycle, to not cheapen the standard PS4's value, and give adequate time to devs to target BOTH possible specs- for a standard PS4, and an upgraded PS4.

Xbox One+ 8 GB's of ram expansion, made by Microsoft. Compatible with ONLY an xbox one, and vice versa.

If they limit the expansions to ONE memory expansion per life cycle, they can still utilize the familiarity that devs already have with the console, and just start using the new expansions to increase post processing, shadows, anisotropic filtering, or various other things that improve image quality, and to cut down on load times.

A 200 dollar expansion instead of making a whole new system, and consumers wouldn't have to worry about buying a new system that may or may not be backwards compatible, and may or may not be worth whatever the asking price of the new device is, etc...

So basically, I'm saying, MIMIC what makes a PC so great by allowing hardware upgrades to the system, but LIMIT the amount of upgrade-ability to proprietary units, and only do it once per console life cycle. This way, platform specific development can simply be altered to develop two versions of the same game, on the same hardware, with one version taking full advantage of the "boost" in either ram or gpu power.

BUT, neither of these two systems are built with this thinking in mind, so it would have to wait until Next gen anyways.

Cerny points out the advantage that DF keeps referring to as a disadvantage. Developers don't need to do anything special to have overhead sounds mapped to height speakers. It's all built in and processed lag free on existing and future PS5 games. This is obviously a superior approach imo as it works with virtually any speaker configuration.

I see what you did there. Clever

kythlyn256d ago

I have an Atmos setup and in my case it definitely introduces some audio lag... probably around 10-20ms. The game I always use to test this sort of thing is Stray because of the dedicated meow button triggering the sound out of the Dual Sense. Makes it really easy to perceive a lack of audio sync. There's only one setting on PS5 that doesn't produce audio lag (at least with my setup), and that is Linear PCM.

fr0sty256d ago

So you are able to tell 1 frame of latency at 60fps, you're saying...

kythlyn255d ago (Edited 255d ago )

To fr0sty... yes? Not everyone will notice it, but people with trained ears such as musicians definitely will.

Reaper22_256d ago

The truth is that Atmos is superior. Plain and simple. The devil prefer it over what sony is providing. It's the standard for games, movies and music.

DarthZoolu256d ago

It’s definitely the leader of the industry right now

crazyCoconuts256d ago

And what about the PS5 implementation being discussed is NOT Atmos?

Reaper22_256d ago

Only DTS:X is on on par with atmos. I understand Sony wanting to use their own but Atmos is superior which is why is used throughout the entertainment industry.

crazyCoconuts255d ago

I'm trying to point out to you: PS5 is using Atmos. That's the whole point of this firmware update

fr0sty256d ago (Edited 255d ago )

From a hardware perspective, Atmos' 7.1.4 setup is indeed superior, but the software side of Atmos is far from superior. Dolby Atmos games (ISF) supports 32 objects and this is used in a 7.1.4 basebed + 20 dynamic object configuration most of the time. PS5's Tempest audio supports 100 dynamic objects, so it actually has to downmix the audio, dropping 68 objects in the process, to make it work properly over Atmos.

It seems likely to me that some those online games they speak of will be split among PS5, PC and mobile. People seem to forget how much money those phone games make.

Anything with Mark Cerny's technical eye cast over it has my attention though, so I look forward to finding out more about this one from him and Haven Studios.

Eonjay808d ago

Thank you. People act like they can have online games as a law or somehow it prevents them from making single player games which it clearly doesn't. Just in the pipeline we have Horizen FW, God of War, Spiderman 2 and Wolverine. They already released Reternal, Demon Soluls, Spideman MM, Rachet and Clank and probably more that I'm missing. These things exist, we don't have to speculate or let ourselves be trapped into some group thought. The idea that they ababdoned SP games suddenly is a fantasy from a blog that is trying to generate drama.

... the guy does have a certain 'knack' for things.

gamer7804808d ago (Edited 808d ago )

Third party studios would be best served if they made multiplayer games open to all platforms for the sake of the longevity of the game. I understand first party doing pc + one console because they own the studio. Still interested in what they are making but it’s going to be a looong while.

I agree. Offline games or offline modes should always be available. This online only obsession with every dev lately is going to ruin gaming as a whole imo.

FanboysKiller808d ago (Edited 808d ago )

I agree %110 , but Destiny changed my perspective on seamless online gameplay , but it's still considered one of its kind , nothings like it and that's far from enough to prove itself as a solid argument.

senorfartcushion808d ago (Edited 808d ago )

I have my online games, but the never ending progress in them means that you can’t really swap between games as often as we would like.

I would cite influence advertising as part of the problem. With even single player games being affected by the way gaming “engagement” is perceived.

I’m playing Sifu at the moment on PS5 and Max Payne 3 on Series X. Even the quality of how the games are produced is lessening because of how much studios are trying to appeal to influencers more than customers. Max Payne 3 is a game. It can be hard, it can be easy. Regardless, it’s polished to a mirror shine.

Sifu has great combat and is satisfying to play, but the roguelite stuff within (solely designed to appeal to Twitch players, like the genre as a whole) is a major bummer. People are currently arguing vision. Whether or not the game should be made easier due to how the difficulty doesn’t mesh with some people. Difficult games are fine, but they’ve got to be designed well. Sifu isn’t really. It’s a victim of the roguelite dragon the studio has been chasing. This is a game that deserves to be easier to play, something tells me that they’ve only kept the difficulty high to advertise it on the fact that people will be repeating levels a lot in their time spent playing the game.

The ironic thing about difficulty is the sense of identity people both feel for themselves and feel of the devs, when the devs are arguably going against their own identities by chasing trends.

The issues I have with Sifu starts with multiplayer games. The game itself is arguable an MP game due to how many people watch it on Twitch.

GhostofHorizon808d ago

Just because people watch a game on Twitch doesn't mean it's a multi-player game. This whole post is just some projected nonsense.

Roguelites created for streamers? What?

Sounds like you just don't understand what roguelike and roguelite games are all about.

FanboysKiller807d ago (Edited 807d ago )

@SenorFartCushion
Budget is king , the sad truth about generational leap is being overrated and easily overshadowed by its budget, a triple a game from the last decade or two still holds itself and get liked the way it looked more than its technicality behind it.

Offline is the core of the significant majority of PS exclusives on the PS4. It's time for them to build online communities that fans can play and enjoy in-between the waits for these big AAA releases.

I'm all for all 10 of them.

1. Bungies New IP
2. Faction 2 (The Last of Us)
3. Twisted Metal Online (rumored)
4. Guerrilla Games other IP (rumored SOCOM)
5. Deviant Games New IP (former Black Ops COD devs)
6. Haven Studios New IP (Jade Raymond and former Ubisoft devs)
7. Firewalk Studios New IP (former Bungie, Take-2, Activision, EA devs)
8.
9.
10.

So by all means bring them on.

senorfartcushion808d ago

Obviously that’s good. But can you not follow the patterns that literally every other company has been making these last few years? Games as a service multiplayer games are made mostly to rid ones catalogue of any single player only games

ABizzel1808d ago (Edited 808d ago )

@Senor

That's a baseless point. There are significantly more companies that continue to produce single-player experiences, than there are companies that have dropped single-player completely to rid their catalogue of any single player only games. This is fear mongering.

Someone said this best a while ago in a PS Group. Sony is the AAA Blockbuster Film / HBO of gaming. They create premium high quality content. That has allowed them to make a huge comeback during the PS360Wii era, dominate the home console market during the PS4XBOWiiU era, and is what will continue to carry them into the PS5 generation and beyond. How many single player games have they released for the PS5 compared to Live Service games. How many single player games got cancelled for a live service game?

4 of the 7 known Live Service games are from 2nd party developers, so where is this concern from single player games coming from. Naughty Dog is making Factions.....And they've made several multiplayers before without it affecting their single player narrative driven games. Firesprite is a brand new developer under PlayStation, so there shouldn't be any AAA single player expectation on them to begin with, people were just talking about how this is a VR studio and okay with it, but have a potential issue with them working on service games. Guerrilla is releasing Forbidden West this month A single player game, with a Horizon VR exclusive later this year (also likely single player), so why is it a problem that they have a team working on something else multiplayer / GaaS based.

This fear mongering needs to stop.

PS Gamers praise Sony for their first party and the amazing narratives they play and create with their IPs. Why are they so fixated on holding them back from attempting to do the same in a multiplayer space. If you don't like playing online then don't. Destiny is an example of one you don't really have to, and that's a 5 year old experience now. Let them learn and grow in the Online space, just like they did in the Single Player Space.

People say all the time, I want Bloodborne for PS5 or Bloodborne 2. Well in a Ongoing world, they could still be getting new content from Bloodborne to this day, have new content launch each year, have an option where you and friends can take on a Raid Boss, and so much more. What is the fear in this?

Stop the fear mongering and just say you don't like multiplayer / online games, and these games aren't for you and move on. But there are millions of PS gamers who want to enjoy games like these and want to see Sony's first party blend narrative and world building into AAA online experiences. The PS3 had significantly more multiplayer experiences than the PS4 from Sony studios and the PS4 was a significantly more successful and online focused console. That has to change, because gamers are going online more.

northpaws808d ago

I welcome both, for single players, just from from first party alone we have Horizon Forbidden West, God of War Ragnarok, Spidermen 2, Wolverine, I am sure naughty dog is working on a single player game on top of the fiction MP game too.

If some good online games can help keep PlayStation's cash flow more healthy, then so be it, whatever keeps the ship afloat for my single player experiences.

Tapani808d ago

Agreed! The only way I see online is okay for me is something like Dark Souls where it's a part of the gameplay and lore system. I'm an offline games person.

Example: I was playing the other day Shadow Hearts 2 on PS3 Phat (using bilinear filtering and upscaled image + TVs black insertion frame and upscaler + sharpening etc.) and me and my wife were blown away by the writing, animation, graphics, and music. Can't believe some games on PS1-PS2 era are better than the ones today when you have all the technology in the world, and everything is online and connected. We are rapidly collecting old games to play, particularly the gems we didn't have time or a chance to play. These games take our weekends away more so than the modern ones. Maybe we are old, but they just suck us right in vs the new games which feel like a polished turd of a product.

KingofBandits807d ago

could not agree more. I'm sick of online games, MMOBA and anything in that vein. gaming is getting way too big and as a result is making way too much trend chasing trash

frostypants807d ago (Edited 807d ago )

Offline games DO still exist in more than equal measure. I don't think that is going away.

I agree with everyone who wants a slew of offline traditional games...

But.... Online games persistent ones and those with dreaded micro transactions battle passes etc make more money it as simple as that

It's a shame but those days of of purchasing a game with all content on her etc are now gone. Ironicly Nintendo are closest to old school style games

SullysCigar808d ago

What about Demon's Souls? Returnal? Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart? Horizon Zero Dawn? God of War?

And up next Horizon Forbidden West?

moriarty1889808d ago

Those are the rare exceptions made only by Sony. Let’s hope they continue to make those unique experiences for much longer and not change to these online only type games.

Atticus_finch808d ago

Moriarty
His point is that Sony studios are also keeping the hope alive not only Nintendo.

gamer7804808d ago (Edited 808d ago )

They might sell more copies but they don’t always make as much profit. But I agree that they need multiple ways to fill the funnel. Live service games and single player type games

ABizzel1808d ago

@moriart1889

Mario, Zelda, Doom, Ori, Resident Evil, Souls Games, Devil may Cry, Far Cry, Doom, and hundreds of others.

DOMination-808d ago

What about Starfield, Avowed, Hellblade II, ES6, Fable, As Dusk Falls, Everwild...

Many Switch games have paid DLC, like Breath of the Wild, Super Smash Bros Ultimate and Animal Crossing New Horizons.

Atticus_finch808d ago

Not only that but certain Nintendo Digital only games get limited releases on purpose to inflate the price.

purple101808d ago

Mark Cerny touches it

Game : "instantly turns to gold"

Has my attention too.

GhostofHorizon808d ago

Surely you have something to share by now, concept art at the very least.

I find it really hard to get excited about a game where all I know is that it will be an online game which is not even a great selling point to me, actually makes me less excited.

This game is likely 2026 or beyond.
