Sony didn't believe PlayStation 'would ever be a major part' of its business

PlayStation was viewed extremely negative from large parts of Sony before it launched, Andrew House revealed at Develop Conference today.

ApolloAdams3592d ago

And now it's their only recent commercial success. Funny how that goes huh.

iamnsuperman3592d ago (Edited 3592d ago )

Erm Sony has also seen recent sucess with its mobile division (phone and tablet under the Xperia label). Just a shame its entertainment failings over shadow this

Edit: actually the first Xperia Z has been attributed to pushing Sony's earnings into the black. It was also a very popular handset in parts of Europe. Sony who had no market share to some is a big success for Sony's mobile future. Market share doesn't change over night with yearly releases of several variants per company

ApolloAdams3592d ago

Xperia isn't successful. They are near the bottom when it comes to phone manufacturer sales. They are behind Samsung, Apple, Nokia, LG, ZTE, Huawai, TLC, Lenovo, CoolPad with a 2% marketshare.

SamPao3592d ago

@apollo lol. Check your sources again :P

ApolloAdams3592d ago (Edited 3592d ago )

Now you are changing my previous argument. I never said Xperia didn't turn Sony profitable.

Xperia just isn't popular. Also of course market share doesn't change over night if you want just numbers Xperia sold around under 40 million units last year...Pathetic.

Also who cares that their one phone was kinda popular in some countries of Europe. Lol Moral victories huh.

@Ultr

My sources are solid actually. And accurate.

Sony not even mentioned on the last one because they don't sell well.

our_games_are_art3592d ago

I've always had an eye on the Xperia phones. And if the iphone 6 leaks are true and Apple is making it look more like a galaxy. I'll be getting a sony phone

If you think PS is Sony's "only" recent commercial success, you don't know anything about Sony's businesses.

Or you're just a troll and we all know what the case is here.

ApolloAdams3592d ago

Name them and give evidence of RECENT Sony commercial successes besides PS4. I already debunked the who Sony is successful at mobile.

Next.

snookiegamer3592d ago (Edited 3592d ago )

@SilentNegotiator

LOL you're right about Apollo. Every PS Article I've read over the last few hrs, he's in there either downplaying Sony/PS4 or trolling it.

Just a couple of hours ago, I read a comment by Apollo (check his history), where he told an actual 'real' PS4 supporter (who called him out on his trolling) to calm down, because he himself owns a PS4. Yet he spends hours trolling in PS4 articles. That's really pathetic, I'm calling BS!

Playstation, blu-ray, movies, music, mobile devices, and financial services.

The only division that isn't profitable is Electronics (Televisions, computers, laptops)

Pass the word. You should know what you're posting before you post it.

Not knowing what you're posting and just going along with the popular view just makes you look foolish.

Because they listened to the consumers, and made the necessary changes to their PlayStation, unlike what they did with the PS3, Walkman etc. If Sony continue to make the changes, they will become a major player in the electronics market like they once where.

"Sony didn't believe PlayStation 'would ever be a major part' of its business"
Take that you boring old businessmen back in time!
Who would've thought that people would want to have fun ;).

Spotie3592d ago

Funny how you can state out and out lies and yet not be marked for the troll you are. Sony is doing well in MOST areas, notably music and movies. Their financial division has pretty much always been solid, too. And while mobile may not be on top, it's still doing well.

But I don't have to tell you this. Not only have others educated you, but I'm certain you know better, anyway.

I've found that most of those who troll Sony do so with full knowledge that what they say is a lie, or a partial truth, at best.

PlayStation: The First 25 Years

The path from the PlayStation 1 to the upcoming PlayStation 5 lines up neatly, but only if you’re looking at it numerically. In actuality, for more than 25 years the PlayStation team has had to navigate some of the industry’s most difficult terrain. During that time, a dedicated team of visionaries, engineers, and software developers established a brand from scratch, propelled it to unprecedented heights, struggled to maintain dominance, and eventually returned to what initially made them so successful.

They sure do and the PS4/Pro and Switch are proof of this!

FallenAngel19842221d ago

I still remember how the misinformed media tried to push a doom and gloom narrative for the future of consoles at the beginning of the decade

Tsar4ever012221d ago

Didn't even notice it earlier but PlayStation already has it's own GAAS as part of it's PSN service model. It's "Free-to-Play" games & "Streaming", ala PSNow as part of it's "Adaptive Monetization ", according to Ex-PlayStation Boss Andrew House.

Consoles have successfully existed for the past 46 years and they’ll successor exist for the next 46 years.

“Former PlayStation CEO Andrew House's Stirring Farewell: "PlayStation Has Always Been About Games"

I’m really going to miss this guy. Thank you for your help bringing PlayStation to where it is today.

NewMonday2344d ago (Edited 2344d ago )

a most fitting farewell, big thanks and good luck to Mr.Andrew House.

if MS want to save the XBox brand they have the perfect man available. and get rid of the trolls like Greenberg/Penello/Nelson and the guy who only talks the talk Phil Spencer.

morganfell2344d ago

But he isn't stepping down, he is stepping up. He is being promoted.

morganfell2344d ago

https://www.sie.com/en/corp...

Announced on the same day people started blabbing he was leaving.

"John Kodera promoted to President and Chief Executive Officer, Andrew House to be appointed Chairman"

Ashlen2344d ago

"Current President and Global CEO Andrew House will transition from operational management of SIE, but will remain with SIE as Chairman through the year to ensure a smooth transition."

He is ending his time at SIE at the end of the year. He hasn't announced any future plans. It's unfortunate I liked him a lot as well, but the reality is he is leaving Sony either to retire or take up a new career somewhere else.

morganfell2344d ago

@Ashlen,

Thanks for that clarification. He will certainly be missed. He stayed through a not so pleasant time when others might have bailed. Great guy with a lot of insight.

Zeke682344d ago

Actually he is taking over Sony Pictures at 2019.
