Titanfall tops chart, but PS4 leads hardware again in March - NPD

The NPD Group has issued its March video game sales report, revealing a 28 percent drop in software sales (including PC) to $432 million. Hardware, however, soared 78 percent on the strength of the new consoles, totaling $395 million. Accessories were also up 4 percent to $224 million. Overall, total industry sales increased 3 percent to $1.03 billion.

NPD noted that Sony's PlayStation 4 led hardware sales (for the third month in a row) despite the Xbox One exclusive Titanfall topping the games chart.

March should have been the time we saw Xbox One kick on. In fact, it sold less than it did in February! February was a 4 week NPD, March a 5-week. Average per week, it sold 64,500 in February and 62,200 in March... that's not a step in the right direction, it's barely treading water.

The way things are going, it won't be long until there's a worldwide 2:1 in favour of ps4.

March had more total sold because there was an extra few days on the charts. While Gribble's breakdown factors in those extra few days as a full week, making them somewhat inaccurate, it does still show that it is selling at roughly the same pace as last month at best.

Titanfall isn't selling all that well considering it's install base.

It's biggest market was on 360 but it sold the least on 360. Even lower than on pc. The x1 version is the smallest of the bases and it sold most there.

Overall, it's sold 1.5million of which 1.3million are on X1. By comparison Infamous sold just above a million on ps4 and released 3 weeks after Titanfall.

Edit: Correction, 360 version hasn't released yet. My bad.

That's not accurate if the x1 and pc Titanfall sales are lumped together. In that case your probably looking at less than 1 million on the x1 something closer to 900k on the x1 alone which means despite releasing later Infamous second son outsold Titanfall is what looks to be the case.

EDIT: Okay so PC sales don't count towards that number my bad BUT. .The Titanfall numbers do include xbox 360 sales and it's pretty much a given that Titanfall probably sold more on the 360 meaning AGAIN Infamous SS DID sell more than Titanfall on the X1. Yeah there is no firm release dates yet for X1 exclusives the rest of the year. MS will probably announce those at E3. On the other hand, dull or not, MLB 2014, TLOU, and Drive Club are all coming out in next few months. Not sure if The Order comes out this year. I am sure Sony will announce new games at E3 as well, but as expected the exclusives from Sony will overpower MS.

I would like to see how close they were. Overall they are neck and neck in the us. I expect that to change soon since ps4 is now in stock everywhere I have been in Vegas and there game line up still has launch games and only annoucing remastered games and then the layoffs and cancellations. Forcing Kinect with every console was one of the biggest mistakes a company has done in the gaming business. If Microsoft had released at launch a 350€ Kinect-less X1, they would probably be selling more consoles then Sony, or be closer in sales in relation to Sony. I'm not surprised that PS4 is leading. I own both consoles and even though I prefer PS4, Xbox isn't going anywhere. Everybody is always talking doom and gloom whether it's PS3 back in the day or Xbox One.

Yup. Fanboys are crazy. The ps3 was DOOMED for years according to n4g and neogaf armchair analysts and we all know how that turned out - ps3 actually edged out the 360 in global sales (though it never caught up in the US.)

Now, we're literally a few months in to the new gen and I can't tell you how many times I've seen people declare that the xbox brand is dead. The xbox one is outpacing the 360 - and that's with direct competition with the ps4, while the 360 coasted with its year head start over the ps3. By all appearances, it's doing great - just not as well as the ps4.

I too own both new consoles and prefer the ps4, but xbox is a strong brand, and MS seem to be more aggressively seeking exclusives that will keep it relevant. And regardless of which console I like more, I'm smart enough to know that healthy competition is how consumers come out ahead - it was the 360's dominance that hatched ps plus, which is amazing value, and now that is forcing MS to adopt a similar program in order to compete.

I was surised to see the PS4 at #1 in March but then again if you really look at the situation with the Xbox One right now it doesn't seem as far fetched that the PS4 would still beat it out:

#1 Price - even though we saw $50 off sales and games being included the price more or less was the same as the PS4 however see point #2 and it doesn't make #1 feel all that "even or the same value".

#2 Resolution Gate comparisons every month since launch are / have hurt the hardcore consumer confidence in the console and most likely some of that has finally seeped over to more casual consumers.

3) Games with Gold nowhere to be seen on Xbox One vs PS4 getting its PS+ games going since launch. When you factor #3 and then #2 it really seems like #1 is not all that accurate in the big picture.

Phil Spencer has a long road ahead of him right now, plain and simple. Can it be overcome? Sure but its gonna take a lot of hardwork. Actually kinda glad to see this as it means MS is going to have to work twice as hard. Bring on E3.

The PS4 owners aren't happy with the PS4 library. The Xbone owners aren't happy with the Xbone library. Nobody has much of anything worth having yet. That's what makes all the hooting and bragging so funny. PS4 owners are trying to pretend that they are excited about stuff like Mercenary kings (a port of a steam game). Xbone owners are trying to make the best of Garden Warfare. Titanfall is fun. 2nd son is fun. The third party hybrid last/current ports are okay. But both of the libraries are still weak and pathetic.

you know if you stop and think a min this situation with titanfall could work the other way. It may not have pulled console selling numbers because a lot of consumers may have the notion that something given away effectively for free is probably not that good. Lets face it most consumers think if its so good why is it free? Plus a lot of people and sites are saying that while its technically a good game its a bit shallow, (not many gamemodes etc...)

I had a stint on titanfall and still think BF 4 is way better. My opinion. It has its faults but there no longer game breaking. I very rarely see much rubber banding which loads of people complain about. so I would say that.
