UE4 if you plan to make a very simple game using only blueprints. Like FPS horror games for example

Unity otherwise.

Doing actual coding in UE4 is absolutely horrendous compared to Unity, and their API is full of weird inconsistencies. Also the full-featured Unity 5 is now free with no royalties. UE4 is free with 5% royalties. I'd just say go for Unity in general. Unity 5 is basically just as powerful as UE4

For full source code access and better performance, go with UE4. For easier programming and and no royalties, go with Unity 5.

The only reason not to use UE4 as an indie is to avoid to pay the 5% royalty, because it can slow down a company growth.

With UE4 going free*, a huge chunk of customer will jump the ship, since the demographic changed a little.

UE4 was just 20$ before. This isn't gonna make a big difference, especially since UE4 is such an immense pain in the ass to work with.

The biggest "jumping ships" moment was when UE4 was released for wide audiences last year. Everyone including myself thought unity was finished. Then we got our hands on UE4 and realised this was a huge mistake, and went back to Unity

@Timesplitter14
You are right in many things. It was 20 per month. You could stop the payment and not the update and so on. There is a huge learning curve, and Unity is easier.

But by making it free*, I can certainly see their audience increasing from two sources. First is colleges campus that has some kind of game degree. Second are small groups or individuals that wants to make a game but doesn't want to put any capital upfront.

For sure there are getting lots of undecided people and new ones as well. I feel like they are building this huge momentum going forward.

This will be nice to see how it changes development in Pantheon: Rise of the fallen and 7 days to die.

Jacktrauma3356d ago

Looking forward to seeing what they got. I'm sure UR4 going free as well is gonna make quite a few future games come to life. Very exciting!

JoeIsMad3356d ago

There are a few core differences between the free versions though, as Unity free is fully free and royalty free. Unreal free requires paid royalty fess post-launch.

Cloud computing is part of the engine now. Interesting.

Timesplitter143356d ago

cloud building is not cloud computing

3 people created the BlackSmith Demo from Unity! I recently just bought Developing with Unity course book. My school will be starting it's game design degree program this fall and I'm sure they'll be using Unity 5. If 3 people made that demo, in 2 months then I can only imagine what I'll do when I have 6 months to design with my senior thesis independent study before graduation.

I love that I'm a Jack of all trades... Writing drawing, and animating. $1500 is cheap to have an entire engine with no royalties.

Make this game already, OMG! I'm ready to play this, I was ready at the first video.... LoL

All jokes aside this looks amazing, the Unity Engine is amazing... Is this going to be a game or a Movie.... either way I can't wait...

maybelovehate2352d ago

Very impressive. Unity has come so far as an engine. Their new post processing stack might be the best in the business. So impressed every time I use it. Not just how good it looks but the performance too which used to be something Unity struggled with.
