Sony are bringing ten "very different" games to PS4 this year

"When you just look at the big triple-A blockbuster titles, yes, we don't have many, but we are actually planning about ten games to release this year from now till the end of December," Yoshida-san told Gamereactor when we talked to him at E3.

"And many games are very, very creative and charming, games like Everybody's Gone to the Rapture or The Tomorrow Children or Until Dawn. Many, many interesting titles that are very different from any other big titles. So I think we are offering great variety of experiences for people who have PS4, and as you saw in the conference there are lots of big third-party titles coming out this Christmas."

* Needs to be said, but Persona 5 & Tales of games aren't going to appeal to all jrpg fans, just some of them.

They are somewhat of an acquired taste, as is any RPG series, but yea it's not like either of those are Dragon Quest of Final Fantasy or something.

styferion3222d ago (Edited 3222d ago )

Not really, Persona series is becoming bigger by the day, the fact that it spawns 2 ports, spin-off games, animes, movies shows it has huge following.

Not to mention because of the long wait (7 long years, damnit) and this holiday lack of first-party exclusives Sony will surely put it among the highlights of their holiday offering. It will get even more significant popularity boost, kinda like how the niche game Bloodborne is being played by mainstream gamers.

343_Guilty_Spark3222d ago

I love Takes but Persona is too wierd for me.

Sly-Lupin3222d ago

Uh... where have you been the last decade or so? Formerly niche JRPG series like Tales Of and Persona have become mainstream. Partly due to the increasing impotency and irrelevancy of former staples like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, and partly due to the rise of the even MORE niche Otaku games (like everything Idea Factory craps out).

Spotie3222d ago

No game in any genre appeals to ALL fans of that genre. I can't believe you'd say anything so stupid with a straight face.

Do all fps fans love Call of Duty? Do all TPS fans love Gears? Do all racing game fans love Need for Speed?

No game appeals to everybody that enjoys a specific genre, not one. But if you have multiple games in that genre that appeal to people who have different tastes, guess who'll want your console?

Good lord, it baffles me how some of you people think.

remixx1163222d ago

And why does it need to be said?........why do you care?? Mass appeal does not translate to quality, have you ever played tales of xilia or persona 4 golden....they are definite quality.

Also I hate when people cry "its niche so it doesn't have mass appeal".....its like the worst argument ever....as if being niche and having your own style and flow which separates you from others around you is a bad thing.

3-4-53221d ago

I didn't mean they are bad, I just mean they are a bit unique and won't appeal to as much of the mainstream as some of you think.

They will still most likely be good quality RPG's though, but not everyone is into that style.

* I'd love to see the art style of tales, but with a more realistic setting and story.

That's why I love Sony so much. I'm not putting down the X1 but Sony really has the most incredible library of games second to PC.

Mikefizzled3222d ago

To be fair Sony have nothing to do with them being exclusive. The article is specifically about games Sony have a hand in.

abradley3221d ago

True but generally when it comes to RPG's, Sony are the king of the consoles nowadays. They understand that genre well and makes games accordingly to the system. The Japanese love the system so we often get their great games too.

oasdada3222d ago

YUP. i for one have no problem with the lineup. If only Tomorrows children comes out this year then its a cherry on top! currently Quite busy with Batman and then J Star victory!!

Oh Man The Tomorrow Children looks so excellent!

Most people don't even understand what Dreams is.

Think LBP in God mode.

nicksetzer13222d ago (Edited 3222d ago )

Wow, that game does look awesome, hadn't even had it on my radar before now. (I knew about it, just hadn't seen enough) Really hoping to see more of RIME or wild soon too. Been sooo long since we have heard anything on RIME, but it looks soo good.

As for dream, I think people get it, just some like it, some don't. They give the impression that it is more of an art/animation tool than a game. There isn't really an ability to "play" anything from what I could tell, maybe I understood wrong though, and an animation tool doesn't really interest me.

If they do allow you to assign controls and and controls for objects, that could be pretty cool.

SmokingMonkey3222d ago

I Imagine Dreams will be anything goes.

Check out the little bubbles at the end of the Dreams E3 trailer.

There is one with a green tank from 3rd person view, I am pretty sure you will be able to literally create anything you want. Animation to Games...anything.

http://www.rocketchainsaw.c...

I would be upset if it was just a Animation/video maker, Being MediaMolecule, I belive this game will be LBP X 10

strickers3222d ago

On Twitter, Rime guys said they'd finished crunch time. Didn't answer any of us asking if release was imminent then.

rainslacker3222d ago

I think too little is known about Dreams to really make an informed decision. Sure we can make any kind of world, but until something is said about how one can make game play scenarios, it makes it hard to be too into it unless you are really the artistic type.

On top of that, sculpting isn't quite as easy as using pre-formed assets which you can just throw together. The demo makes it look easy, as anyone with sculpting talent could do, but the reality is that it does require a lot of practice and training, so I wonder how much, "assistance" the program gives to allow all users to make the kinds of models we saw at the reveal. I know how to sculpt 3D models, but I suck at it because I lack any real artistic talent.

If the game is just a dream simulator, with a sculpting interface, it can really limit the appeal of the game. I could get into LBP creation because I could use their stuff to create levels, and since I understand game play concepts it worked for me. Basically it was like how I made other games with an artist who made the assets...so it just works.

So for now, just waiting to see more.

MrDead3222d ago (Edited 3222d ago )

If you check out this vid at 1:52 https://www.youtube.com/wat... there is a lady talking about Dreams who has played the game, she thinks it could incredibly disruptive to the 3D animation world and could revolutionise a lot of things..... all I know is that I really want to get my hands on this game.

MasterCornholio3222d ago

Mediamolecule is a studio that oozes with innovation. I expect dreams to impact this industry just like LBP did.

rainslacker3222d ago

That's cool and all, but it's still supposed to be a game.

Unless Sony is marketing it as a creation tool and not a game.

It's an interesting concept, but 3D modeling, particularly sculpting, requires talent and knowledge to get it to look right.

I just want to know what kind of game play scenarios can be set up with it, and if it will allow us to use other people's creations to create those scenarios....because for people like me, I lack the talent to sculpt, and only do a little better with 3D models in general.

uth113222d ago

I didn't understand why they focused on 'dreams' when it looked like an animation studio. Then I heard it might get Morpheus support and it dawned on me-- with VR it could be like living in a lucid dream.

MasterCornholio3222d ago

Dreams with VR.

Now that's called day dreaming.

:)

I really want to see more.

Xavior_Reigns3222d ago

Dreams is like a dream simulator. I really want to see more of that one cause my imagination is kicking.

MasterCornholio3221d ago

I wonder if you can invade other peoples dreams to give them nightmares

Xavior_Reigns3221d ago

@ MasterCornholio

That would be insane! I love the idea already lol. If you or anyone with twitter should ask MM (if they have a twitter account?) about it and see what they say.

The thing I love about Sony first party is how diverse the games are. Not everything is for everyone (like dreams for me, looks interesting but not my thing), but there is definitely something for everyone!
It's a shame ratchet and clank remake was pushed back, I was looking forward to that.

abradley3221d ago

There's always the HD collection on PS3 & Vita. Loving it at the moment, so many good memories and the game holds up very well to todays standards.

ninsigma3221d ago

Never played the collection but I did play the original on the ps2 ( until my save corrupted right at the end so I never finished it). The thing that bugged me though was the controls. I loved the game but the input just wrecked my head.

abradley3221d ago

The HD collection which I believe is on offer at the mo for like, £8 for all three games has fixed the controls somewhat. Still a little clunky but i've gotten used to it pretty quick.

Cy3222d ago

Both companies seem to have pretty diverse line ups, which is awesome.

deadpoolio3163222d ago (Edited 3222d ago )

The difference is though that Sony has always has a more diverse lineup that gets steadily released over the course of the year...

MS on the other hand has to purchase timed exclusivity from 3rd parties so they dont have to lose the brah crowd by releasing anything other than Halo, Gears, Forza, Fable, Halo, Gears, Forza, Fable....They apparently haven't heard of variety before or not crapping every game out at the end of the year to try to get the holiday only sales...They haven't released a 1st party game since Halo MCC last November

GamerGT3222d ago

As good as my 6 year old is with Minerals I can see him doing some crazy stuff with his imagination. If I get it i will spend a couple hours on it each time before resuming a game to slowly make a project. Imagine if you can Dream up your own game.

Doesn't look any different to the ps4 version. Hope it's not another lazy Sony remaster a.k.a remake.

Andy_Dee66d ago (Edited 66d ago )

Wrong, they even showed it on the last State of Play and I just played it the month before since I wanted to go back to it.

It does look better and more cleaned up, it's not a remake at least what they said. They said remaster so this article is wrong from the info I've heard.

Until Dawn is getting remastered to coincide with the live-action movie.

So not a Lazy remake and yes it looks better! :)

CrimsonWing6966d ago

It’s pretty different looking.

Neonridr66d ago

I'm sure it's a fair upgrade seeing as it's UE5 now. That being said, the original was not ugly by any stretch and I can't fully understand the need to remake this other than a cash grab to coincide with the movie that is coming eventually.

Crows9065d ago

Please point to me to a lazy remake?

A good game, had some fps troubles on ps4. So hopefully thats ironed out with some better looking graphics.

solideagle66d ago

I think Sony should rename PlayStation to RemakeStation. I am a Playstation fan but this is getting ridiculous. I think this is the weakest gen software-wise compared to all other gen.

PS2 > PS3 > PS1 > PS4 > PS5

Battlestar2366d ago

Agreed. Sony has released only remasters/remakes of games and noting new. MS has released so many new games i don't have the time to name the all.

solideagle66d ago

I have never owned or cared about Xbox, so I don't have any opinion about that. if you say that MS has released then I believe you I guess

Terry_B66d ago

Ratchet & Clank, Spider-Man 2, Gran Turismo 7, Helldivers 2 , Horizon Forbidden West to name a couple.

And what Microsoft released in the last couple of years was way beyond the league of those listed games.

MrNinosan66d ago

Ratchet & Clank, Returnal, Spider-Man 2, Gran Turismo 7, Helldivers 2, God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Forbidden West to mention a few of the good ones.
Then everything on PSVR2.
Then we have the bad ones, like Destruction AllStars and medium ones like Sackboy: A Big Adventure.

On top of that, there are lots of third party games.

Compare that to MS.
Redfall, MS Flight Simulator, Forza Horizon 5, Forza Motorsport, Starfield, HiFi Rush. Did I miss anything?

Now lets compare the games, and see which console had the best start this generation.

solideagle66d ago

I think Sony should have abandoned the PS4. we have not seen true PS5 potential yet. where are those games that would load Assets from SSD where the character is looking <-- Mark Cerny

I hope all new games from Sony Studios are PS5 only from now...

CrimsonWing6966d ago

What’s worse is this gen is almost over, if you can believe it.

staticall66d ago

@solideagle
I completely agree with you. At first it was like «Hey, so cool, i've never played this game and it's getting a remake, means it'll be much better!» but now it's «Come on, i was just playing that, it still looks and plays just fine». I want to play new games, try new experiences, hear new stories from new characters. It's like gaming companies have hired George Lucas as a consultant or something.

@Battlestar23
> MS has released so many new games i don't have the time to name the all
Suuuuuuuure, dude. Come on, be real.

Felix_Argyle_Catbro66d ago

Looks like the PS4 version. Lol, that'd be 70 bucks.

Machina65d ago

Cheap and quick way to fill in the release calendar in-between major new games - that's why pretty much all the major publishers have been doing it.

This is a fun game. But remaking this is lazy. A cheap remaster while a new game is being developed would have had more value for the customer.

EvertonFC81d ago

Yeah I here ya, I'm on the fence tbh as I think the haptics could be really cool but it seems a little early.
I guess it's to tie in with the movie release so makes sense somewhat.

outsider162481d ago

This over Killzone remake? Or Socom 2 remake?

monkey60281d ago

Less effort and there's a movie release to tie into.
I am very tired of all these remakes and remasters of games from recent years. If they're going to remake anything it should be a lot older.

Chevalier81d ago

If the Resistance trilogy on PS3 was being remade I would buy that day 1. Really hope the franchise returns along with Killzone

JEECE81d ago

Socom 2 remake wouldn't be worth the effort. I don't know the exact number it finally sold, but from looking at articles from a few years after launch, it looks to have gotten in the ballpark of 3 million. It has been twenty years now so many of those people probably don't even play games anymore, and the people who play multiplayer games now would start whining about Socom about three weeks after launch about how "there isn't enough content" and "they just sent it out to die." Granted, it would probably develop a small but dedicated player base from the old crowd who want a stable, solid multiplayer game instead of a live service, but that isn't a lucrative proposition for Sony.

EvertonFC81d ago (Edited 81d ago )

It was the same when millions of gamers asked for a sly remake then when the game came out it sold like 10,000 copies.
Sometimes we think we want the old games then in reality nobody ever buys it 😂🤣

outsider162481d ago

You have a point though. I guess we want it because of nostalgia. Was hoping we'd get a socom with a good single player and ofcourse multiplayer, maybe it'll sell well.
