The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Review | GES

GES Writes: "The Witcher 3 is finally here and it is definitely worth the wait, this is the first Witcher game that I actually really got into and I must say that it is the best Action RPG game I have played this year so far. It’s refreshing to find a game actually delivering on all the aspects and everything that the developer promised.

The first thing you will notice about The Witcher 3 is the outstanding graphics and how real the environments feel, you really feel yourself drawn into the game and this is not just thanks to the graphics but also the way the story and world has been created. The main story line is great to follow and all the characters involved are deep and interesting especially Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer. Geralt is yet again the main protagonist but you will get some time with Ciri as well, which creates a great difference and great to feel and see the differences."

The foliage (leaves especially) are shite on my ps4

zidane13413259d ago

That's funny, they look great on my Xbox one. Hmm...

starchild3259d ago

Your PS4 must be defective and artifacting. The foliage in the Witcher 3 uses the same alpha textures other games use, but it also has translucency and is dynamically animated. There's nothing "shite" about it relative to other games. Perhaps the world is so convincing that your mind automatically compares it against foliage in the real world instead of comparing it to other games.

DC7773258d ago

Well, I also play on PS4. Sometimes they look like shite and other times things look amazing. There is a lot of back and forth graphically but you can see from the overall lighting and scenery what the intention was. It's just not "brought out" in all PS4 scenes.

I wasn't hyped for this game at all. Decided to give it a try. I am mighty happy, the story is great and just pulled me in like a good book. I think the acting is great too. It's not some convoluted mess that makes no sense like a lot of other games out there.

There are some glitches and issues but hopefully they will be patched. The game play and story outshines them all.

I wouldn't say it's a 5/5.
It's damned good but no open-world game, where exploring glitches quests, should get a perfect score.

zidane13413259d ago (Edited 3259d ago )

That's every open world game. Elder Scrolls? Yep. Gta? Yep. Far cry? Yep. Dragon age? Yup. Saints Row? Yup.oh what about fallout 3? Oh wait there were many glitches :(

Spoiler alert: all games have glitches especially big open world ones.

showtimefolks3259d ago

Oh so that makes it okay?

Witcher 3 is amazing but not perfect score
gta 5 launched without I
issues so what are you talking about

Farcry launched with out issues

Dragon age had issues?

Saints row come on mam

feraldrgn3257d ago

Then clearly that shows that they need to work on getting the quest system to work properly, doesn't it?

The whole point of open-world games is that you get to go where you want, but if by exploring it glitches quests, then it's counteractive.

I'm not talking about other bugs, just quests in specific.

Maxor3259d ago

I thought Bloodborne would be GOTY until I played this. The Witcher 3 is so freaking epic that it killed my anticipation for anything else coming out in 2015.

averagejoe263259d ago

Eh. The Witcher, while fun, is pretty generic in most aspects. Not to mention its rather lackluster combat system and unoriginal art direction (and the myriad of bugs). I'd still give it to Bloodborne by far, but to each their own.

showtimefolks3259d ago

Mgs5

Goty will be decided between

Witcher 3
mgs5
bloodborne

I still think bloodborne may win just because a lot of journalists love it a lot

Witcher 3 needs few more patches. But it's getting there

eklektic3259d ago

Any one having issues with npc's not loading. Blacksmiths, merchants, and mission givers. I have to sit for up to a minute before they load in. And some times i have to meditate to get them to load.

starchild3259d ago

I haven't seen any issues like that. In fact, I get very little pop-in of any kind, other than occasional hardly noticeable shadow pop-in at a distance. But I am playing it off a SSD and I'm not sure how it performs on standard hard drives. What are you playing it on?

eklektic3259d ago

Ps4 sorry probably should have put that in there.

feedphil3259d ago

Ya happened to me once with the town by keiras place I fast traveled in and out to make him load up

The 7 Best Western RPGs: Immersive Adventures

RPGs are often huge, sprawling endeavours. With limited playtime, we have to choose wisely, so here's the best western RPGs available today.

SimpleSlave20d ago

"I started playing games yesterday" the List... Meh!

How about a few RPGs that deserve some love instead?
1 - Alpha Protocol - Now on GOG
2 - else Heart.Break()
3 - Shadowrun Trilogy
4 - Wasteland 2
5 - UnderRail
6 - Tyranny
7 - Torment: Tides of Numenera

And for a bonus game that flew under the radar:
8 - Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

DustMan20d ago

Loved Alpha Protocol in all it's glorious jank. Great game.

SimpleSlave20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

Not only glorious jank, but the idea that the story can completely change depending on what you do, or say, or side with, makes it one of the most forward thinking games ever. The amount of story permutation is the equivalent of a Hitman level but in Story Form. And it wasn't just that the story changed, no, it was that you met completely new characters, or missed them, depending on your choices. Made Mass Effect feel static in comparison.

Alpha Protocol was absolutely glorious, indeed. And it was, and still is, more Next Gen than most anything out there these days. In this regard at least.

Pity.

Infinite but not the first two games? Witcher 3 but not the first two games?? GTA V but not literally any of the games before it??? Portal 2 but not the first? Also if you're going to play Shadow of The Colossus play the remaster and not the remake. Can't say I disagree with the list but my man it's all over the place.

Name Last Name44d ago

I mean some sequels are objectively better and you don’t need to play the whole series.

Inverno44d ago

But most of these games have a story to follow, sure you can catch up with a YouTube vid but where's the fun in that?

LucasRuinedChildhood44d ago (Edited 44d ago )

A list like this isn't telling you not to play the previous games if you want to. It's just giving you legendary games to play.

But tbh, you don't always have to force yourself to play every entry in a franchise to get to the better ones.

- The vast majority of Witcher 3 players never played the first 2 and had a great time. The first 2 games aren't in the same league.
- The GTA games are self-contained with the odd fun reference. You can easily jump into any of them.
- The Shadow Of The Colossus remake looks and controls better than the original (plus it has a 60fps option while the remaster is just 30fps). New players will enjoy it more.
- Portal 2 is a lot better than Portal 1 and takes the concept much further gameplay-wise. Storywise, Portal 1 is fairly light too. Not that you shouldn't play it but realistically ... you'd love Portal 2 whether you play it or not (at lot of Portal 2 players have never played 1).

Bioshock 1 is the only one I agree with you on simply because it's one the best games of all time and arguably better than Infinite. No other setting like Rapture.

Looking at the list, I'd recommend playing Uncharted 1 before 2 but no doubt, 2 is the legendary one you have to play.

Inverno44d ago

I get it, but that's just my opinion on his opinion. I just think that before you play a sequel you should still play what came before it. Maybe it's just me but i find it fascinating playing through the first game in a series and seeing how it has evolved through its sequels. Like I said I don't disagree with the list, other than SoTC which I strongly believe the remaster of the original should be played above the remake.

AuraAbjure43d ago

Awesome list! Hot take on Fear (and it's hard af expansion Persaus Mandate!) Bioshock Infinite is stellar, so is the Witcher 3 and you nailed it by having Ocarina of Time. So many fantastic games! Gotta play 'em all! Next one on my list is Prey after I beat Dead Space 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.
