Both types of games can coexist. I don't see why just because a few types of one genre becomes popular, the whole industry has to leave other genres behind. I get that advancement is good, but only for things like gameplay mechanics. If a game wants to be very artistic and emotionally driven than great, I love and welcome those kinds of games. Skyrim and Assassins Creed.
Skyrim for being unimaginative. Sure there's a TON to explore, but what you are exploring isn't anything interesting. No important characters to get emotionally attached to. I couldn't stand the aesthetic style of the characters. Also i'm really not a fan of the *Meet random person. Get quest. Perform boring task that has nothing to do with the plotline. Go back to random person. Get reward. Find new random person*

As a big Killzone fan, I really didn't care for Killzone 3 at all. And most of the Killzone fanbase doesn't either. We all consider Killzone 2 to be superior to 3 :p
Happens to me a few times a year. I remember when I was younger I would play Kingdom Hearts every single day without a memory card. I would get home from school and play it all the way up to about the 3rd or 4th world, then i'd turn it off for bed, and do it all over again the next day.
Anymore though I find myself saying "I can't be bothered" or "ugh I don't feel like doing that." I think it's because as we grow as people, we grow as gamer...
