When I first heard this, I rolled my eyes and laughed, thinking some Nintendo fan was trying way too hard to defend "his" company. But, to see this actually came from Nintendo themselves...wow...
I don't like or dislike Nintendo, but this is about as hard as you can spin something. 3DS has outsold them both combined, because it was released years before them.
Now, if it had outsold them THIS YEAR, then they'd have a point. But it didn'...
The only thing you sort of have a point about is sports games. Uncharted, Halo, Witcher, and Fallout are the games that are becoming one mega genre. The only difference is the camera angle, and the type of weapon you use.
"Not really. Developers need to understand that they don't need to follow new audiences, old fanbases will buy the game and create buzz for new audience members to become curious enough to take interest in the game."
THANK YOU! You create new, younger fans by keeping the old fans happy, and making the younger fans wonder what the fuss is all about. Of course not all of them will like it, just like not all older fans like it.
I agree with almost everything you said. Personally, I wouldn't consider a single SquareEnix game amazing. I think the best they've managed is Final Fantasy 12, and even that was so big of a departure that I don't even consider it a "real" Final Fantasy.
I also don't care that the remake is episodic, even though I hate episodic games. I don't care, because I'm not buying it anyway.
There's no reason a big-budget turn-based RPG wouldn't fit into today's gaming world. And, the fact that people think it wouldn't fit is exactly why this industry is doomed.
You can't say "only this type of game works now", and not expect a crash.
So, if there was a Suikoden movie like Advent Children, THEN it would be okay for Suikoden to be an ARPG? What? Any turn-based series can have an over-the-top action movie. That doesn't mean the games should change genres.
Do the Persona animes show turn-based battles? Why would they?
You don't understand me at all. I have nothing against ARPGs. What I'm against is AAA basically being a genre, and games/series' in other genres being CHANGED into ARPGs.
