like oblivion where you had to sleep to implement the perks of your level up

or like fallout where it stops the game in the middle of whatever you are doing making it impossible to do anything you need to concentrate on

I'd prefer the Fallout 3 method. I hated trying to limit the number of times I used my shield before I slept in order to get the maximum upgrade. I loved the game, but the leveling system in Oblivion was awful.

I don't have any problems with the Fallout 3 way of leveling up. There is no advantage in the game of leveling up on your own time. It makes no difference.

In contrast, in a game like Kotor, where your leveling up affects your ability to be a higher-ranked Jedi in the game, the player has the option of not leveling up immediately and instead can gather as many experience points as he wants until he reaches Dantooine (I think that's the name of the planet where the player will train to become a jedi). At that point, you can level up as a Jedi and reach a higher rank, rather than wasting some of your leveling on your previous class, which was either scout, soldier, or scoundrel.

A major problem I and my friends have with Oblivion is that when you as a player level up and become more powerful, all the enemies and creatures occupying the world around you will also level up, so the feeling of accomplishment is lost on the player. If you want to play a game where you level up and feel more powerful against enemies by killing them quicker, Oblivion will be a frustrating experience.

how is the fallout way good?

it freezes you in mid game making it possible to be stealthy (i play stealth)

no to mention it automatically heals you so the challenge if you in mid battle is taken away

i do agree that they need to take away the scaling system to some extent but it makes the game pretty bad if i can't explore right when i start the game and i have to be a certain level to go places.....it was like that with new vegas as soon as i stepped out of the tutorial area i got mauled by scorpions i couldn't even think about doing damage too (though i do know it was developed by obsidian an not bethesda)

i hate being interrupted when im in the middle of something important

maybe if they let you go in and manually level up and not stop the game and break the immersion that elder scrolls is famous for

It be close but i think rage will win goty, it be a tough choice, it seem rage has everything like graphics and characters plus its a new ip, the game industry going to probably pick rage b/c they want game developer to see more new ip and innovation for the industry kinda like rdr.

I haven't played Oblivion yet but I'm thinking of picking it up and playing through now that Skyrim is coming out. Should I spend the time or just wait?

I'd say give it a shot! I loved Oblivion. A lot of people give it flak for not being the exact same game that Morrowind was, but I had no problems with it.

Oblivion is probably worth playing if just to get an idea of how much of an improvement Skyrim will be.

It doesn't hold up well to today's standards, so don't expect it to be amazing, though it was great for it's time.

I'm more worried about the bug-ridden mess they've sold me before (Fallout). I will think twice, or at least hold off, before getting this one.

Im pretty sure it'll release with bugs like previous Bethesda games but it seems like they were pretty good with releasing patches frequently in New Vegas' case.

The interaction was never an issue for me. The voice acting in Fallout was generally good enough to ignore the stiff character making dead eye contact with you. Oblivion was weird though because the begger women would go from a poor accent to a rich person accent. Then there were conversations which shop owners would converse with themselves about how great it is to shop at shops owned by themselves. Great lulz there.

i played some what type of RPG's but this is the first one that has me hyped for it...i tryed to play New Vegas but with all the bugs i stop playin it...and some people think GTA's are RPG's and im sure i played games with RPG elements....but i cant wait for Skyrim, Dead Island and Rage...like i said earlier i hope this year gets me into the RPG....Good RPG that makes me wanna play and get lost in the world...im tired of buying games and beating them in 4-8hours

They just need to work on balance. The problem all of Beth's games is that toward the end of the game the challenge is almost trivial as player becomes an unstoppable juggernaut. Such is the way of open world RPGs I guess.

fallout 3 compared to oblivion, Fallout 3 gets DESTROYED!

Fallout 1 and 2 are way better games than fallout 3

I think Fallout 3 is the weakest piece of work from Bethesda, though still a very good game.

Morrowind is a better rpg than oblivion "on paper" but it is clunkier and not as pretty

I am hoping Skyrim will combine the best of oblivion and Morrowind, and even throw in a dash of fallout 3, just a pinch though

I don't think you're giving Fallout 3 due credit. The first two Fallouts were great games, yes. But you can't make that kind of games anymore, the era for that kind of RPGs have come and gone.

it is in my top 50 games of all time, but it is low in that list, oblivion is up high,,, that's just me though

I would agree with most of those on your list except for Oblivion. I would swap that for Morrowind. As for Starcraft 2, I don't play that genre of RTS so no comment.

Always good to see Demon Souls make it in the top five of anyone's list too, that game simply does not get the credit it deserves. Easily this gen's most innovative console RPG.

The "snap to close up dialogue" would be one of the few complaints I had about Oblivion. It feels awkward each and every time.

Should this be addressed then they really have nothing to worry about. :)
