Rumour: Sony may cut PS3 price after older model gone

Bloomberg News: Sony Corp., the biggest maker of video-game players, may lower the U.S. price of the newest PlayStation 3 console once supplies of an older model are sold, an analyst said.

Sony will stop selling PlayStation 3s equipped with a 60- gigabyte hard drive in the U.S. once the inventory is gone, Kimberly Otzman, a spokeswoman for Tokyo-based Sony's U.S. games business, said in an e-mail today.

Yeah! Though this is buiseness, and cutting the price already would make Sony seem desperate and that would make analysts write critical reviews about the announcement. The Paramount situation is such an impact and suprise for the Blu-ray camp, that they may announce a new PS3 sku that is very stripped down and focuses on delivering a cheap Blu-ray player for the holidays.

Marketing the PS3 as a Blu-ray player with Blu-ray movie bundles instead of the Motorstorm and games bundles, seems like a logical response to HD-DVD. Paramount exerts such power in this format war, that they have to be radical in order to prevent other major studios to wobble.

Wow, what a surprise, I'm saying this like... since when we all know that the 60GB model will phase out. But what I'm not so sure is if it will be a real price-cut or just price the 80GB on the actual 60GB price, at least.

And I would go beyond that and say that, independently of the 60GB phase out by the time, this price-cut on the 80GB model will come this year...

The two sole launch models now discontinued in under a year, now you get a ps3 back at six hundred bucks minus the ps2 chipset. But since they include motorstorm and twenty extra gigs of hd space, they you to think that you are getting a deal. I have a suggestion, how about keeping the 60 gig models out for 499 and let me decide which game I want for 59.99 and I will still have change leftover.

They need to get that user base up for Kojima. It would suck for MGS to attach to 10% of a 6 million user base system. Talk about money wasted. Just think I would get a 80 gig model for mabe $500. With no real reason to get a PS3 now (see lair and HS, waiting on Killzone 2) I will wait beyond.

I'm getting a PS3. I have been wanting on Killzone 2 since e3-05. I just have my own opinion. I don't kiss Sony or M$ a$$. You don't know sh8t about me. I have had consoles made by Sony, M$, Nintendo, Sega, and Atari. Don't be mad if I don't want to get a PS3 right now.

I agree with Codeazrael about getting the 60 gig for hundred dollars less. Thats why I bought my ps3 yesterday. Better to get the 60 gig w/ the EE chip, and pick your game. 20 gig is not that much more room, and you can always replace the HD with a bigger size.

agreed that is the same rational I used to get mine in July and without Motorstorm, Sony can easily afford price cut on 80GB PS3

as for current 80GB deal, Motorstorm is a very good game so if anybody plans on to store some media on PS3, you will still have plenty left for games. Overall its a good deal and PS3 is reported to have better backward compatibility than 360

Every PS1/PS2 game I've tried worked flawlessly, and you can upscale them now. Doesn't really make a difference on the PS1 games though.

I agree 100% the EE chip doesn't make a difference, when you emulate the EE chip is disabled anyhow. I've found glitches in Mgs2 during the ending, the audio won't play on final fmv. etc. I hope sony rectifies this, they've been pretty good at updating bc anyhow.

I believe that Sony's sweet spot is at 399.99. If they managed to lower the price of the 80 gig model to 399.99 and with a lot of games (from good to great) coming up late 07 and early 08 then LOOK OUT MS AND NINTENDO.

Alas, I don't see the 80 gig or I guess we should learn to say the sole ps3 sku going down to $399 ANY time soon. It's going to be holiday season 08 at the absolute earliest you see a price like that, unless Sony dreams up another sku to throw at us, like that 40 gig model I've been hearing about.

They have to sale at least 4 million by end of year...they can do it..Warhawk is good, Haze will be good, drakes fortune will be good, heavenly sword is good. Gt5 prologue will be good, and MGS4 and Killzone 2 will be out by second quarter 2008....they have to sale as many PS3s as they can this christmas...for bluray domination and overall game console domination.

They should drop the price, and they probably will, but it won't be enough to make me want to buy it. They're losing too much money on the PS3 and selling too few consoles to make it worth it.

Sony is running out of time to get a foothold, if its not already too late. Developers need a lot of incentive (potential buyers) to spend up to 4 times as much as they would spend making a Wii game. When another console offers cheaper and faster development (both others do) as well as a larger number of potential game buyers, you won't get too many good games to yourself.

Downward spirals start there. Few buyers because of high price leads to fewer developers making games for the system, which leads to fewer people buying it.

Mixed with the long development times, the PS3 really needs a price cut, and more than a $100 price cut to make it match the better 60 GB model.

Many of us have car payments, and credit card debt. A $299 system seems ok even then, but not a $599.00 system when you have rent and a car payment due every month.

Even if there are still big losses to take...they're better off taking them now and recouping them with software sales. MGS, KZ2, both FF13s and GT5 are all sure to be big sellers, so they should capitalize on the Fall while they can.

Well duh. Pretty damned obviously they aren't going into the holidays with only a $600 bundle. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw the 80GB at $399 and a new premium with a 160GB HDD and game bundle for $599. If the core and premium are actually far enough apart people won't just assume the Core is gimped and they must buy the premium like 360.

there was a report on this. all it does is a lot of blurring to so called "smooth things out" but really, if I had a choice, I wouldnt use it. They showed GOW II and Final Fantasy XII and they both looked a hell of a lot better on the ps2 rather than upscaled on the ps3.

Well if they even want to sell how much they are right now (which isn't that good) they will have to lower the price even lower then the current 60gb price. I'm not too sure but I don't think the 80gb has a emotion chip.

What would they take off?? Maybe bluetooth and memory care slots? But then they would ahve to make wired controllers...hmmm. Who knows, but that would move quite a few consoles.

I know they already sell at a loss, but I think all the press they create by console sales would all but end the format war and they could make all that money back early the next year with Blu-ray/software sales.
