darkmurder5096d ago

I can guarantee MS is not releasing a portable gaming device. Considering they are throwing all of their mobile game attention towards Windows Mobile 7 there is no chance of that happening. Considering how Ninty dominates the market and how iPhone is catching up to the casual market MS would be dumb to release a handheld.

edgeofblade5096d ago

I think DUMB is a stretch. You could have said the same thing about a console when Microsoft launched Xbox. Not to say they haven't had bumps in the road, but it's been a pretty successful product so far.

If I were to cite a reason for Microsoft NOT to make a portable, it's because the RROD has proven they aren't the best at playing the hardware game. But who knows... maybe they will learn a thing or two...

nveenio5096d ago

Power PC on M$? I don't think so. That would make programming for both PC and Xbox that much more difficult. Which means I don't believe anything else here, either.

Honestly, I don't think M$ will release another console until they feel comfortable with going all digital. (Anything to prevent them from paying Sony for having a BluRay drive.)

IdleLeeSiuLung5096d ago

PowerPC is used at all three console manufacturers right now!

EvilBlackCat5096d ago (Edited 5096d ago )

"Honestly, I don't think M$ will release another console until they feel comfortable with going all digital. (Anything to prevent them from paying Sony for having a BluRay drive.)"

They dont need Sony's Blu Ray

SkyGamer5096d ago (Edited 5096d ago )

MS just made over 12 billion dollars profit last fiscal quarter. I am sure they can afford some losses. Of course they have a very good board of directors that look out for the bottom line better than most. I really don't think MS will use blu-ray. I think they will use usb flash drives as you can have up to 64 to 128 gb flash drives that transfer data faster than a blu-ray disc and hold more data. Smaller physical medium and no skip. Just look at the system update for X360. Makes use of flash drives. Look at Windows updates. Breaking the cap on 32 gb sd. Bottom line is that with USB 3.0 out and with transfer speeds of 3gbs, with more voltage and higher capacity, you do not need a disc format. Welcome to the new storage medium and that is backwards compat down to USB 1.1.

Imagine the new "HD" dvd player. Would have a slot for regular dvd then a USB 3.0 input. Imagine how small a device would be. Imagine doing away with the disc altogether.

Besides I think I remember a statement issued out by Intel how they "missed" the opportunity for console processors. Intel could very well power one if not all of the nexgen console cpu's. They can mass produce and well you know the story with Dell . . . Imagine a Nehalem Octacore w/ht! 8Physical, 16logical, yum!

Rush5096d ago

To be fair that's not all that accurate, The Original Box was far more reliable then the PS2. The same way the PS3 is far more reliable then the 360.

Sure they made a massive cock up with the RROD but it doesn't mean there next console wont be a decent machine.

nnotdead5095d ago

i think cost would be too big of a factor. i like the idea though.

ALFAxD_CENTAURO5096d ago (Edited 5096d ago )

Microsoft clearly said (years back) they don't want to go with the Portable Consoles.

@ShadyDevil

PS4 will be released at least 6 or 8 years more. Sony need to stop supporting PS2 1st.

Bnet3435096d ago

Microsoft also said they will beat the PS3 this generation. Microsoft says a lot of things. My point is, you pick and choose what to believe and not believe, leaving people looking like fools. I don't know when an Xbox portable will surface, but I want one. No one has yet revolutionize the online space in handheld gaming and I think Microsoft can push that with Xbox Live on an Xbox Portable the way they did with the original Xbox. And for the love of sunny jesus, it better have two analog sticks.

RememberThe3575096d ago

If this is a "successor" though I'd be concerned. I have a vision in my head of it being a tablet like the iPad.

Nac5096d ago

I believe they have said specifically that they will go into the portable market when the time is right.

edgeofblade5096d ago

Kigmal: I can bet I know how an XBP with XBL will play out by extending the 360 strategy.

There will be two models: one with a 3G/4G-ish radio, but there will be a Core model without the cellphone-y component... but you can buy the component and plug it in later. Otherwise, it will have Wi-fi from the get-go.

AliTheBrit195096d ago

Yeah and Sony said they where dropping the Dualshock controller for good

Look how that turned out.

PS360PCROCKS5095d ago

lmao!! Dude your smoking crack...2016-2018?! You really honestly think you won't see another console until 2016 from Sony? Wow I'll pay you a $100 if you're right, needless to say I'm not worried about losing that bet...

SnuggleBandit5096d ago

PowerPC??? lmao i hope this isn't true. Apple ditched that tech years ago cause it was too much of a power hog. MS already had a console with overheating problems, hopefully they have learned!

siyrobbo5096d ago (Edited 5096d ago )

both the ps3 cell and 360 xenon are based on POWER architecture

also the wii is power based as well

viperman2405096d ago

Isnt the Cell also a Power PC thing?

Projekt7tuning5096d ago

@ z-hayden
I guess that's why the PS3 and 360 use modified versions of IBM's Power PC now, huh? Ignorance is bliss.

SnuggleBandit5096d ago

Well i certainly feel like an idiot! You learn somethin new everyday i guess hahaha

Anonagrog5095d ago

What did you learn today? That the consoles all use a CPU architecture based on Power PC, or that you need to know the facts before stating a comment? ;)

Comet5095d ago

I don't think the "Xbox 3" will come with a blu-ray drive...

Christopher5095d ago

***According to early rumored reports the Xbox 360 successor will have a drive that plays both DVD and Blu Ray with software being released on both formats.***

Highly unlikely. You have to program your applications around the read speed of the media, and DVDs have variable speeds for increased reading while BDs have constant speeds. Extremely unlikely anyone would put out a DVD and Blu-ray disc on the 360 for games. Might be used for movie watching, but still just very unlikely considering Microsoft's stance against Blu-ray.

Personally, I think it will be moving towards Arcade 360s being bundled with Natal for good. I've also been thinking that Sony might be doing something similar with packaging the Move with all future console releases considering their lack of response to PS3 availability.

pixelsword5095d ago

I would say that it's likely because of the dominance of the Blu-Ray.

I would also say that there's also other options out there, but they're either failed formats or ones that are not adopted for the film industry, so if they do go another route, I would seriously doubt that they would get the film industry's support.

nveenio5095d ago

@IdleLeeSiuLung

I didn't say Microsoft doesn't use it. What I said is that they won't use it in a console because of the gap it creates in multiplatform development. We have evidence of that gap right now...in fact, it's one of the hottest debates about Sony's choice to use it.

SonyOwnsNextYear5095d ago

It's about time for Microsoft to include Blu-ray!

Jazz41085095d ago

I have very good information from somone who works with microsoft that they are looking at UHD as there next drive. They will not use blueray

sinclaircrown5095d ago

The only people blind to that are the fanboys who actually think Sony and MS hate each other as much as the fanboys hate each other.

PS3 and Xbox are only 'divisions' of Sony and Microsoft. I'm sure both companies have tons of contracts with each other for all sorts of things.

Anyone who think MS would be to bitter to pay Sony for using bluray is just a blind ignorant fanboy. Simple as that.

Don't you guys have any sports teams you could root for? You know, be a fan of something worthwile?

Ooh, my friend just bought a cake mixer from Phillips. I'm gonna go call him and rant about how much better the KitchenAid brand is! << That's exactly what being a console fanboy is like.

Marquis_de_Sade5095d ago

Yes, people seem to forget this, Sony VIAO computers use Windows OS for example.

Faztkiller5096d ago (Edited 5096d ago )

Why DVD and Blu-ray that makes no sense

-MD-5096d ago (Edited 5096d ago )

Agreed, that makes absolutely no sense.

Edit: Yeah normal DVDs play in blu-ray players so having both seems entirely pointless to me.

MightyMark4275096d ago

I think it's a good idea because it makes the 360 to be versatile. The devs can make a 360 game on Blu ray if a DVD disc doesn't have enough space.

Faztkiller5096d ago (Edited 5096d ago )

Can't blu-ray drives play DVD's I know dvd drives are cheap but no reason to add the extra cost just use blu-ray or something new

8thnightvolley5096d ago

yes blu ray drives can play dvds but using it for gaming might be an entirely different format of reading altogether.. and they dont want to divide the market into 2 so its best to have both.. i believe

jdktech20105096d ago (Edited 5096d ago )

Maybe it would be easier that way for the xbox 360 games which are DVD to play on the next xbox.....I don't know but that makes the most sense to me. I doubt it's just for movie playback since Bluray can do that but you can't play 360 games on a Bluray maybe because of some special coding? That's the only thing I got

Godmars2905096d ago (Edited 5096d ago )

Nevermind that the tech wasn't ready, neither HD-DVD nor Blu-ray, when the 360 launched, there was a whole load of BS between MS and Sony commercial media codecs and security formats. Sony didn't what to use what MS was offering, so MS jumped on the HD-DVD bandwagon, pretty much funded the making of the bandwagon, to screw every thing up.

If MS had waited the six months they should have, they still would have had their head start against Sony, prevented RRoD, and maybe had HD-DVD inside the 360.

As to the article:
Are people really not aware that the PS3 plays both BR and DVD? That it upscales regular DVD?

Faztkiller5096d ago (Edited 5096d ago )

Agree they should have waited for HD-DVD
I'm not sure they would have Fixed RRoD They've had 5 years to fix and haven't

Godmars2905096d ago

RRoD supposedly comes from a combination of flaws in the motherboard design and 3rd rate materials used by a contractor, so another six months on the drawing board, refining quality control, would have helped alot.

MS is the Obidiah Stane to Sony and IBM being Tony Stark. Not coming up with the idea or making it real, not understanding the fundamentals, but more than talented at marketing and promoting that idea. Stabbing someone in the back while smiling in their face.

Traveler5096d ago

That's not true. I don't know anybody that has bought an Xbox 360 recently that has had it fail on them. It really does seem the problem has been eradicated. Of course there will always be a few people that encounter problems, just as there are with the PS3, but I don't see any signs of it being above normal levels.

PiTCHBLaCK5096d ago

I'm gonna have to agree with what FaZtKiLLaR has said.

I Don't think 6 extra monthes would have gave MS Enough time to fix the RROD.
because It's been 5 years and still It's not completely fix nore does
MS Address the Issue.
I Don't think time has anything to do with fixing the RROD.

mikeh09185096d ago

I bought my 360 in 07, and i have never had a problem with it, and my house is always hot and i play constantly for the past 3 years. So it appears the one i got never had problems to begin with. Therefor MS solved it at some point. Or I was lucky.

edgeofblade5096d ago

Look... first the Stane/Stark comparison is shameless anthropomorphizing and you know it.

Second, if Microsoft had dealt with the RROD before putting the 360 into production, they would have been in a much better position to fix it permanently.

Look at it this way: is it easier to tie your shoes when you're sitting down or when you're walking?

Draven5095d ago

if they waited and added the HD-DVD drive, the system would have cost $500-600.

+ Show (4) more repliesLast reply 5095d ago

Mike134nl5096d ago

I don't know what the royalty costs behind the blue ray would be for Microsoft, but I can imagine that compared too other let's say next gen discs blue ray most likely makes more economic sense. Also a lot of consumers are already aware of the blue ray brand/name.

But as a gamer I hope next gen neither sony or microsoft will go with blue-ray but with a faster(reading speed) storage medium and thus eliminating mandatory installs. My personal favourite still remains the holographic disc, which is rumoured to launch in 2011/2012, though at this time this format might be too expansive too include in a console.

Blu-ray on a MS box? Hmmm not so sure about that..

MightyMark4275096d ago

It's possible since Blu-Ray is the medium that everyone uses.

PiTCHBLaCK5096d ago

Wouldn't Sony get some kind of Royalties on every MS Game sold if MS goes Blu Ray?

-MD-5096d ago

Microsoft really doesn't have any other option. Developers are already feeling limited with the capacity of the DVD so they're going to have to upgrade to compete next generation.

It's going to happen.

LordMarius5096d ago

yeah unless they go digital download only, which atm is really unlikely

presto7175096d ago

and that only lazy people could not get up to swap disks ten times on the same game.

Traveler5096d ago

I can virtually guarantee that no console will go digital only. It simply wouldn't be feasible at this point in time.

ASSASSYN 36o5095d ago

^^^^ OOOOPPPSSSS! Someone never head about Onlive.

pixelsword5095d ago (Edited 5095d ago )

"Steve Perlman stated that a 1.5 Mbps connection will be needed to display games in SDTV resolution (typical output of Wii and previous generation console titles) while 4-5 Mbps will be needed for HDTV resolution, such as those output by the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The average broadband connection speed in the US at the end of 2008 was 3.9 Mbps, while 25% of US broadband connections were rated faster than 5 Mbps."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

Also, since broadband providers want to put a download cap on everyone, I would like to limit downloading because I tend to download a lot of items for design purposes.

Besides, If I buy a game, I want to fully possess the game so I can either sell it later on or trade it for another game if I choose. I hate the concept of purchasing time with the game but not actually have actual ownership of the piece.

i would likely believe this rumour since microsoft feels that this e3 they are going to drop something so heavy they got MTV and GT and spike all to give them major coverage so a new console would be about right. and it would be abit stupid if it didnt have a blu ray.. just a hunch anyway.. blu ray is soon going to be a standard medium and they cant continue to ignore that fact.

blodulv5096d ago

A guy I work with apparently is good friends with a MS employee, and he was given one of their grey R&D tester 360's that has the screenshot capture, full game downloads from their server etc...

Anyhow, he says that this employee states that the next Xbox will drop sometime in 2011 and that they're well aware of having to upgrade to the standards of today's tech.

He could be completely full of BS and I am totally skeptical about it, but he's a pretty reliable dude when it comes to story telling. At least so far...

NoOoB1015096d ago

Ms has to upgrade next gen whether it be digital or blu-ray, and since I think Sony owns the right to Blu-Rays MS could go Digital. I'm not sure about Sony owning that though.

Arnon5096d ago

You cant monopolize a media format just because you own it. If Microsoft wanted Blu-Ray in their console, they could do it.

ViciousBoston5096d ago

didn't stop them from refusing to let Nintendo use it did they?

iagainsti1205095d ago (Edited 5095d ago )

they are just one of the many supporters of the Bluray Disc Association http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... the royaltys will go to every company that helped develop the bluray spec http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... Microsoft is one of those compays too because there are Bluray discs that are encoded in VC-1 not h.264 VC-1 is a Microsoft codec a derivative of the WMV9 codec so microsoft is making money on some bluray titles now http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... , and Sony, Philips and Pioneer are making money off every disc sold because the format was devloped by those 3 companies.

so after knowing that it is very likely that we will see microsoft useing bluray in the Next xbox, and it has been stated by microsoft that games on the next xbox will be forwards compatible with the xbox 360 so that tells us that the DVD will be in the next xbox but will most likely ony be used for xbox 360 games and DVD movies. well that's my 2cents.

forwards compatibility is different from backwards compatibility http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... that is why the next xbox will use dvd and another High capacity format.

Also i can assume from this that the next xbox will still have a PowerPC cpu and a ATI GPU for strait hardware backwards compatibility with all the instruction sets and API's found in the xbox 360 and why you ask this is good for developers, well they already know the xbox 360 architecture really well and now there going to have all that experience going into new generation + some more fancy tools to work with which means they can focus more on creating better games and not having to worry about learning crap loads just to make a new game it will be a smaller learning curve its like going from a kids 2 wheel bike to a Trek built for racing

Xbox content + services up 62% while hardware down 31%... seems about right with the way they tout you don't need the hardware to play. People can play on their phones or smart tv or other means. I don't hardly play on my consoles directly since getting devices like the logitech g-cloud and ps portal. Which is to also say I have been playing more digital than physical because of these devices.

I can tell people like you are an absolute minority..

shinoff21833h ago

But that's been ms for years. When things aren't going their way they try to change the way things are said. For instance console sales are down, they stop telling how many sold instead telling us how many hours spent in halo or headshots. So it makes sense console sales down just say people are playing on more devices then previous. What they won't say is how many xbox players jumped ship to ps5.

Cacabunga2h ago

Hardware sales are so bad that Sony and Nintendo are blowing the sales off the water with their hardware.

If Xbox are losers, others aren’t..
Xbox already tried everything with Xbox live then subscriptions went down so much that they had to find something else. Their fans subscribed then reached saturation rather quickly.

Hardware and exclusive games is where it’s at! Keep gamers excited, announce decent software and people will support you

Bethesda France focused on publishing and marketing in the region. And 15 people lost their jobs as part of the closure.

I wonder if this is part of Microsoft's strategy to abandoned physical media or possibly gamepass advertising makes their roles redundant you don't need to market a game as hard when the majority of players get the game as part of a sub which already promoted upcoming games

Ahh yes the good old game preservation of saving all your games to a removable hhd on the Xbox 360, taking it round your mates house, setting up multiple tvs to
Be met with “save data corrupted, please re download”

Or how about removing 360 games
From the store
, download them now or else, and, better hope to god that save data doesn’t corrupt, or it’s lost for ever

Nice one ☝️

Zeref12d ago

It's better than what Nintendo and Playstation is doing. It might not be perfect but at least they are TRYING. Unlike the others.

DarXyde12d ago

Trying? Take off the blinders for a moment, mate.

1. A failure to preserve games is just that: a failure to preserve games. Don't try to sugarcoat it: NO ONE is doing it properly. Better than awful is nothing to write home about.

2. At the time of this comment, isn't it the case that you need an internet connection to play Xbox games even if you buy physical discs that are hardly in circulation anymore? I don't have a Series X and I can't verify, but I think that is correct. I'm fairly certain you can at least play PS5 games at version 1.0 (not much of a win really when many games require day one patches). I think Microsoft's all digital, licensing approach is by far more aggressive than anyone else's. They really try to push you to game pass where you lose your entire library by umm.... Skipping a month of payments.

I don't think anyone is doing it right whatsoever. Don't get me started on Nintendo, who goes after anyone looking to preserve their games better than they ever would with extreme litigation.

Don't be a simp for any of these companies. Get it together.

PhillyDonJawn12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

Microsoft removed their whole indie section when they moved to the xbone because they were going to only allow games on the service that came from a publisher, id@xbox started after xbone launched and it only exists because Sony embraced indie and Microsoft was forced to cancel their plans and reverse course.

And every single game that was part of games for windows live including disk games (I have gta 4 on disk that won't work) so hundreds of games that use that DRM no longer work unless the company themselves patched it out which of course very few did.

Not trying. Tried. they killed of the backcomp program years ago. They set something up again, but sounds like it's more of an attempt to save the current library on whatever they are planning next. With luck they save everything and more, but let's see. I could see them killing off parts of the OG xbox and 360 libraries. Can't imagine that they would allow us to play Forza 5-7 in the future.

With that said, I do like what they've done and really wish they could have done more.

Zeref

So killing off physical media is trying what exactly. Ms don't really give a fk if you think they do your kidding yourself.

Profchaos11d ago

They are not trying this team is established for forward compatability the team is. It interested in preserving Xbox or 360 games.

Is that why Hellblade 2 is digital only?

Zeref12d ago

Just because it's digital only doesn't mean you can't preserve it. Just put it on an external and you have the exact same functionality of what a disc does.

MrNinosan12d ago

Guess you're trolling, but if you actually think that's how it works, I'd recommend buying some braincells.

mkis00711d ago (Edited 11d ago )

Volitile vs nonvolitile data. A disc will not corrupt either. A drive can be corrupted.

Einhander197212d ago

This is just a scammy PR move to distract from the fact they are going digital only and trying to push streaming and subscriptions only.

No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft.

Without discs there is no preservation, preservation can't be done by the rights holders it can only be done by the consumers, anything else is a lie.

Anyone remember xblig which Microsoft removed their whole 360 indie section removing hundreds of games from people?

Do you know you can put your games on an external and preserve them that way? There are no benefits to discs. ZERO. Idk why some of you are still obsessed with them.

DarXyde12d ago

Because games like Persona 5 exist. It's STILL V1.00. On Playstation, that's a win because 1.00 is installed on the disc—no need to download anything.

If a game does not require any updates, it's all on the disc.

Extremely low bar in the modern era, of course. It's not much of a win by any stretch.

But for now, physical media does have a purpose, at least on Playstation.

Einhander197212d ago

That is factually not how game licensing works, try plugging your hard drive into someone else xbox, It's not going to work, and it won't work if the licensing servers ever go down.

Einhander197212d ago

Anyone remember games for windows live.

I have around a dozen games, some on Steam itself that will not work because Microsoft shut off the licensing servers.

BehindTheRows12d ago (Edited 12d ago )

I do. I STILL have games (Gears of War being the big one) I cannot access because Games for Windows LIVE is total garbage and no one has held Microsoft accountable.

Zeref11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership.

"You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership."

Damn how many times do people got to explain your idiocy to you? You can take a copy of Persona 5 like someone used as an example and play that game on ANY console WITHOUT logging in which means I can lend the game to a friend without internet and they can play my game. Can you lend your hard drive to anyone without logging in for them to play? NOPE. That is a huge difference and if you think otherwise then sorry you're an idiot.

Tacoboto11d ago

"No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft."

Ubisoft is literally erasing games people bought from their libraries... My PS1-3 discs are useless on modern hardware. Nintendo's re-published and resold almost their entire Wii U library, and the eShop is completely dead with no BC mechanism in the Switch software. Microsoft publishes everything they make today day one on Steam and Xbox/Windows. Sony only brings to PC the titles they think you might want some years later and Nintendo won't even design a functional long-lasting joystick.

You're absolutely trolling and not serious if you think Microsoft today is the worst offender.

shinoff218311d ago

Yay steam

Not everyone fks with computers though. The disc is still the best way as a console player. Period.

Tacoboto11d ago

How do Sony and Nintendo feel about these discs from 2001-2013?

Don't be stupid, you know Xbox is the best at this today.

Nobody wants this. Sales or the lack of it in the case of XBOX is very telling. I wonder how the adorably all digital series X will fare. Adorably dismal perhaps?

crazyCoconuts11d ago

Only time will tell, but for from someone like me suspecting that Xbox is trying to gracefully exit the console market, that "forward compatibility" team is trying to get Xbox games playing on Windows PCs. I mean, it's nice that they're not planning on exiting with a "enjoy your games while the hardware still works" message, so that's nice. They still have a brand to protect via Microsoft so probably feel obligated to have a better exit strategy.

Xeofate11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

That is not their plan, their plan is to transfer users accounts to the cloud.

Phil Spencer himself said as much a few months back, plans could have changed but I think people are reading way too much into one statement where Phil said he would allow Epic on xbox because he wants to be able to sell xbox games directly on other platforms. Aka, instead of selling Sea of Thives through PSN he wants to have an xbox store to sell his games on PlayStation without giving PlayStation any money.

Again, it's extremely unlikely that Phil plans to put PC on xbox and licensing would prevent them from just giving out other publishers games purchased on xbox copies of thier games on PC, Microsoft does not own their games.

crazyCoconuts11d ago

The thing that doesn't align with the cloud strategy is the giving up on exclusives. You'd still need strong exclusives for cloud streaming - it's still a "platform" , just with a lower upfront hardware investment. I feel like they've learned what PS learned with PSNow long ago. We're not ready to stream games and it's only gonna lose them money to try at this point

FinalFantasyFanatic11d ago

I would love that, I'd buy up some of the Xbox games if they could run on PC, like the Rare Replay, Lost Odyssey and Dead or Alive Ultimate, probably a pipe dream though.
