Legendary Game Maker Peter Molyneux Talks Regrets and What's Next

When Peter Molyneux – the charismatic designer of Fable, Populous, and Black & White, among other seminal video games – announced a couple of years ago that he was going to stop talking so much, a lot of people didn't believe him. He was the seventh person inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences, after designers like Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto, Civilization creator Sid Meier, Id Software founder John Carmack, and SimCity creator Will Wright. He was given a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Game Developers Choice Awards in 2011. He was even honored with an OBE, the Order of the British Empire, in the 2004 New Year's Honors list. Yet by the point in his career that he was for this particular announcement, Molyneux had became almost as famous for not delivering on grand pronouncements as he was for delivering extraordinary video games.

No one should sell any studio they care about to EA.

2340d ago
indysurfn2340d ago

This is the same jerk that said they will not fix the game because only 1.5% of all gamers get to the end anyway? I still wasted 59 dollars and hours of game play and especially the frustration trying to get around the bug until I heard his reply to it.

Mr Pumblechook2340d ago

This interview is from March 31st!

indysurfn2339d ago

Yes this interview is WAY after He said that. I don't forget people that screw me over.

stuna12340d ago

EA and Microsoft are the destroyer of studio's!

Godmars2902340d ago

@darthv72:
The example of Rare, one of the few surviving studios - in name only - would disagree.

Zeref2340d ago

Sony shuts down studios too...

Bahamut2340d ago

Sony wouldn't let a franchise like Fable just die.

Cyborgg2340d ago

It's not affecting them though.

USMC_POLICE2340d ago

@Bahamut, they let socom and syphonfilter just die.

darthv722340d ago

Bahamut... did Fable die or is it just tucked away for the time being?

AmstradAmiga2340d ago (Edited 2340d ago )

@Bahamut

Pure speculation based on what? Regardless of what you think Sony is a business trying to remain profitable. FYI in 2014 Sony downsized by over 1,000 employees, Santa Monica Studios (i.e. Wipeout) being part of the casualties. The year before Sony had downsized by 10,000 employees.

Auron2340d ago (Edited 2340d ago )

Sony shuts down their handhelds too
@bahamut fable isnt dead.. lionhead just sucked and got shut down. FIII was garbage.

michellelynn09762340d ago

Yeah they do, but not nearly like Microsoft or EA. Sony has only done two.

Juvia2340d ago

Are you really trying to say that Sony is at the same level as Microsoft or EA? That is madness, little kitten.

I realize you xbots are desperate to lash out at Sony for whumping you this gen, but there's something to be said for losing gracefully.

madforaday2340d ago

@USMC_POLICE

How did they let Socom die? They came out with Confrontation and Socom 4. Confrontation was really good only after 6 months of it's release. Then they killed it with the DLC. Socom 4 was Zipper's redemption but failed even worse than Confrontation and with no way to fix because it was just awful. Zipper killed Socom. Zipper also messed up MAG towards the end with the crappy DLC that you couldn't even get into because you couldn't get enough people to play. Also, Zipper made a meh Vita game as well. Zipper had a lot of chances to redeem themselves has developers. I just think Bend Studios didn't want to make another Syphon shooter because they are still around and are now making a new IP.

Bigpappy2340d ago

"Sony wouldn't let a franchise like Fable just die."

But they would kill Motor Storm?

Knushwood Butt2340d ago

Socom 4 was a lot of fun in online co-op.

Confrontation was just pain.

Bennibop2340d ago (Edited 2340d ago )

@Zeref Sony has also opened new studios though

Godmars2902339d ago

But they've made games before being shut down. Have long running histories of making games, while under Sony's umbrella, before being shut down. Versus being known for making games, being bought my MS, not making game for years or making one game after many years of nothing, only to be shut down before that one game under MS is released. If its released.

And I wish he hadn't sold us all so much BS

2340d ago
Bahamut2340d ago (Edited 2340d ago )

I love his games, but yeah, he promises much more, every time. I remember when Fable used to be called "Project Ego" and the game he described in the years during creation... and then what he delivered. He's a visionary, but it's like he doesn't understand what the game developers are really capable of.

Trez12342340d ago

Fable was the game that made me fall in love with the xbox brand so I'll alwayd have a soft spot for him.

nowitzki20042340d ago

I hated him but the more I learned about the business the more I learn that he really might have had not much control over what he was paid to do.

Knushwood Butt2340d ago

This guy is a disgrace.

He talks BS about his games until launch, then begs for forgiveness afterwards, time and time again.

Just shut up and deliver.

If not, just retire and suck on some Blackpool rock.

MunchMiller002340d ago

I'm sure he feels perfectly fine once gazing upon his sellout bank account, if he even truly regrets it at all anyways. Which I highly doubt he does.

Mikelarry2340d ago

Exactly what i was thinking, didnt complain about all the monies tehy must have paid him

DevilishSix2340d ago

He decided money was more important. Now he has to live with it.

"the capital group of PCF Group S.A."

If you're getting funding from a group that needs two different ways of Acronyming itself, things will not go the way you want them to.

banger8816h ago

If it was more online-only crap then good riddance.

jjb19813h ago

Outriders was crap. They slapped that game together and threw in a loot system to get players' attention. This game was absolutely jank and the always online nonsense made it stutter like crazy. People Can't Optimize.

thorstein2h ago

I liked Outriders but I could see where the artistic vision was compromised. The way the industry is now, it wouldn't surprise me that upper management would scrap something that didn't pull in money via gaas, mts, or other means.

$250? Do they not know all the other games that already exist or will be made in the future that can do similar?

SimpleDad7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

This is for the hardcore people that have 2500 h in the game. They basically play that one game the whole year.
Oh and those same people are mad as hell at this... what a way to reward fans of your game and annihilate newcomers.

Microsoft’s Surface and Xbox hardware revenues take a big hit in Q3

Microsoft just posted the third quarter of its 2024 fiscal financial results. The software maker made $61.9 billion in revenue and a net income of $21.9 billion during Q3. Revenue is up 17 percent, and net income has increased by 20 percent.

Xbox content + services up 62% while hardware down 31%... seems about right with the way they tout you don't need the hardware to play. People can play on their phones or smart tv or other means. I don't hardly play on my consoles directly since getting devices like the logitech g-cloud and ps portal. Which is to also say I have been playing more digital than physical because of these devices.

solideagle7h ago

you should apply in MS PR team buddy, I think you will do a great job in my humble opinion :)

Sonic18814h ago

I thought darthv72 and Obscure_Observer already work for Microsoft 🤔

dveio4h ago

MS: "Xbox services and content without AB up 1%, with AB up 62%. Hardware down 31%. In total a loss of 350 mill."

darthv72: "Seems about right."

MS: "Excuse m ..."

darthv72: "I don't hardly play on my consoles directly."

MS:

Cacabunga6h ago

I can tell people like you are an absolute minority..

If service is up means their fans and fanboys accepted this model and subscribed to it. The near future you will see a big decline because the service is saturated.

shinoff21835h ago

But that's been ms for years. When things aren't going their way they try to change the way things are said. For instance console sales are down, they stop telling how many sold instead telling us how many hours spent in halo or headshots. So it makes sense console sales down just say people are playing on more devices then previous. What they won't say is how many xbox players jumped ship to ps5.

Cacabunga4h ago

Hardware sales are so bad that Sony and Nintendo are blowing the sales off the water with their hardware.

If Xbox are losers, others aren’t..
Xbox already tried everything with Xbox live then subscriptions went down so much that they had to find something else. Their fans subscribed then reached saturation rather quickly.

Hardware and exclusive games is where it’s at! Keep gamers excited, announce decent software and people will support you

itsmebryan32m ago

@shin
Well keep it simple Sony 's operating income is down 26% and Microsoft's is up 32%. No MS spin there, just facts. 😉
Cheers

Xbox hardware revenue tanks to lowest point of Xbox Series generation

Profchaos8h ago

I'm not surprised surface is struggling they aren't relevant anymore

XBManiac8h ago

Too expensive hardware when others offer the same or more for less? Good work, Green Team.

SimpleDad7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

"Despite some early successes for Xbox games on rival platforms, Xbox hardware is down by a massive 31 percent this quarter."
"Without Activision Blizzard, Microsoft’s overall gaming revenue would have actually declined this quarter."
"Xbox content and services would have only been up a single percent without Activision Blizzard..."
"It looks like next quarter is going to be a similar story for gaming at Microsoft, too."

That is crazy... so A/B/K is carrying the whole Xbox gaming.
Oh and Microsoft will be fine. Windows, Office and Cloud are growing with each pc purchase.

purple1017h ago

Activision: "we gonna need a bigger rucksack/backpack please"

Microsoft: "why's that"

Activision: "to carry yo' weak ass'

Profchaos7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

Top brass have also wanted to start seeing returns on the 100 billion they have put into various Xbox related moves so seeing more multiplatform games is highly likely especially from abk

It's basically saying that PlayStation is the reason Xbox is afloat right now thinks to Ps5 versions of COD

Kornholic5h ago

So basically PS and PC gamers' money is keeping Xbox on life support.
