Xbox One Scorpio Officially Revealed, 6 Teraflops and 4K Gaming Confirmed

After all the leaks and rumor, I doubt there is anyone that didn’t see this coming. Towards the end of Microsoft’s press conference at E3, Phil Spencer officially introduced the new Xbox One code named “Scorpio.”

by 2017 end Sony would have sold 70+ million PS4s, it won't even matter. i said it long time back that MS are going to completely ditch this gen and get a new console, and i was right. the only difference is it's powerful and they'll still support Xbox1 unlike the original Xbox.

so all these 16+ million xbox 1 owners are going to upgrade next year. i really don't know how this is going to work out for most of the owners.

and MS needs games. lots of it. what they showed was handful. and every game is going to Windows 10, it's like you don't need Xbox anymore.

This is the Elite Controller of Xbox Ones. I don't think it's going to be a big game changer other than giving a solid performance boost. The only problem is that performance differential doesn't seem to be as big of a deal this gen as it was last gen. With Sony putting out a more powerful console, too, there really is no reason to think the game is changing. I was most happy that Play Anywhere is getting good support, as I have a gaming PC and won't need any version of Xbox One.

The argument that "why buy a Scorpio when you can buy a PC" isn't exactly science IMO. After all if people wanted to just buy a PC they can now. Some people just don't want that hassle. I love PC gaming but some just dont.

Regardless. I dont see this as a bad move for gamers at all. They can buy the Scorpio build their library and when they decide to buy a PC all their games will be there waiting. Not a bad thing IMO.

I have to imagine it will be $499. Would be surprised if less. Only time will tell. I like the new X1 slim form factor with built in power. Probably won't get one though. I imagine Sony specs for PS4 Neo will change somewhat before official reveal which is smart. At the end of all this I expect both consoles to be more similar in terms of performance than before. Both will be 4K capable and have VR. I will continue to own both most likely. Although my purchases for titles have been almost entirely for the PS4 to date. Competition is good in the end.

Scorpio might as well fill the very high end. And that's fine. I wonder how the Neo vs. Scorpio game will go. I would be very surprised, if the Scorpio will be the same price as the Neo. If you want full 4k gaming, I guess there is no way around the Scorpio. But if 60fps @ 1080p (or 1440p) is enough, but costs you $100 less I guess the Neo will do just fine. If the difference is less than $100, Neo will have a problem. And then, how do the OneS and PS4 fit into this whole game. At the end, it is also about games. If you want to play exclusives, one could go for one high end (either Scorpio or Neo) and one cheap one of the other to "just play" those games.

I think that MS handled their Scorpio announcement very well. It is odd that they did not announce a price though... it might be very expensive OR they are waiting till they can lower the cost of manufacturing before announcing a price.

The problem though is that a heavy horsepower console you still need games, and XBOX'S doesn't get very many as it is, not to mention any games that really push the boundaries graphically.

If both Sony and MS are successful with new console re-specs I imagine the days of 7-8 year HW cycles is over. 3 years will be the new norm perhaps. We'll see. However, since I also have a gaming pc I don't think I will need a reason to own Scorpio if the 'exclusive' games are all on Win10 as well. You can't just change specs like that. Orders have been in place. Parts have been ordered. Whole assembly lines tooled to make the consoles. Most likely for over a few years. Xbox one only got the CPU frequency boost cause it was the only thing they could change on the assemily line. Sony is stuck with the specs they have.

Yeah when Andy House said Neo isn't in a form that's ready to show, it certainly doesn't sound it's ready to be released this year (BTW some rumors made it sound like it would release Q1 or Q2 next year).

It may well be expensive to retool the Neo, on the other hand, I can't see Sony letting MS have that much of an upper hand on them, so they might eat the cost and do it.

it looks like everyone forgot that Sony delayed the PS3 a whole year because the CELL wasn't cost effective to use two so they went to Nvidia and got the RSX chip put inside the PS4. And no specs or release date has been confirmed. If this thing hasn't even went through the mass production stage yet then they can easily make a GPU change.

They can't change the specs. They either have to scrap it and start over thereby wasting millions of dollars on the upgrade they made or they release it and then get even more Bad PR by releasing a brand new system 2 years after that miniupgrade comes out. Systems are planned about 4-6 years in advance of release. As a Sony fan I can see the facts. Phil Spencer just became the Sun Tzu of the videogame industry. PS4 doesn't matter Xbox One doesn't matter Xbox Scorpio and PS4 Neo don't matter. His entire purpose of this was a big shell game. NEO is an upgrade of PS4 to cater for VR. PS4 will still be of use to gamers who want it. These upgrades are still within the same gen so tweaks and minor upgrades of this platform will allow Sony to stay with the 4th generation platform and maintain support for both developers and gamers. The next generation for Sony will come with the PS5 with new architecture and design. This will be the competition to Project Scorpio, not the NEO, though looking at the specs of that reveal, Sony has their hands full just to meet it. Let's see more of this when the calendar rolls over. Jumping the gun if you ask me and completely abandoning the current platform ; that reveal. :(

Sony never confirmed specs of Neo for one. That was all press rumor. But regardless, it is a sure fire bet Sony will adjust specs if necessary. I think it is wishful thinking on X1 fanboys part that the tables are reversed. Given the time and lack of official reveal / timeframe for Neo, Sony will adjust as necessary.

Because you have some people that don't care about 4k or 1080p. This might be a smart move. Drop the new Xbox at around $400-$499. With a price in that range the slim and old X1 would have to be around $199-$250. I would love to hear a Oculus partnership. I will give my Old X1 to my wife (Kinect sports). I will also update my PS4 to the Neo version (give my old PS4 to my son).

I'm buying one specifically for the 4k Blu-Ray player, just like I bought the first PS3 "Fat" specifically for the Blu-ray player (as did my parents). What i love is how with the PS3, it cost Sony money for me to get a sweet deal on a great blu-ray player.

Exactly. For console only owners the 6tflop xb1 is pretty crazy, but if you have a GTX 960/970 or higher PC build then you are already surpassing 6tflop, have access to all the xb1 exclusives, plus all the pc exclusives and multiplat games.

@343 - there's a few titles that were not announced as exclusive to xbox & windows 10 - I distinctly remember seeing one game just having "coming to xbox & windows 10" rather than the "exclusive to xbox & windows 10" text.

edit: that game was dead rising 4, apparently. so there's still a chance, but I honestly doubt dr4 will be on another platform other than Windows 10 or Xbox.

If you are upgrading a console every 3 or so years, the PC is still a much more viable, cheaper, and friendlier way to customize your upgrades while still maintaining a more powerful system than the console.

I do all my gaming exclusively on PC but will be buying an Xbone S because it can play 4k Blu-Ray and will cost less than stand alone players. This was the same reason why I bought a PS3 when it first came out. Blu-Ray players cost significantly more than the PS3 at the time so i happily let Sony subsidize my purchase of their console so i can watch movies. :)

It already is behind PCs. The GTX 1080 cranks out 9 tflops from a single GPU and the GTX 1070 does 6.5 at reference speeds. They put Sony in a very tough spot. They need the Neo to do VR properly. But they have to keep the price reasonable in order to sell a fair amount of them.
If they hold back Neo to compete with Scorpio, they end up hurting VR. I think they should release the Neo now, and then release another after Scorpio. There is no easy choice, and M$ knows that.
They said they were revealing this now so developer could prepare games for it, but I think it was intended to dampen Sony's hype over Neo and cause a bit of ciaos.

1) Sony changes the specs - further delay to get psvr out. Purpose of upgrade is extended and the price goes up. Pc and rift should sound better.

Yeah, MS took a risk announcing so early. While they probably have a reasonable expectation of what Sony is doing given how these things work, but Sony could easily steal all of MS thunder by announcing a system for this year, or early next, a new UHD Slim(likely since they have interest in the medium), and close or better specs than the Scorpio(although unlikely), even if it's pretty high priced, because MS iterated pretty hard that this was for the discerning gamer who wants better performance. They've opened the door for Sony really, so what Sony does depends on what the Neo specs are, and where it's at in the design phase.

Even if the Neo isn't 6TF, Sony could release a 4 TF system this year, and pick up all those discerning hardcore players, leaving less for MS when they finally release. Odds are, most people aren't going to pick up another system after already having one. Biggest question is is would 4TF support 4K gaming on a closed console system which doesn't require hardware as strong as PC to achieve certain results. If they are confident it can, then Sony has a strong hand to play.

It's not just the Scorpio, but the X1 S as well.
The old rumors had the PS4K launching close to PSVR in Oct 2016, the X1S has 4K video and HDR and launches August, but then there's the beefed up Scorpio launching in 2017.

Will Sony release the PS4K now, or delay it to beef up the specs? How will it effect PSVR?
Delaying seems like the best idea long term, but that'll mean the X1S will be the only 4K vid console on the market at least until the NX. But then again maybe Sony will have two consoles to announce today as well?

But if they have one console to show, and Sony delays it to beef up it's specs, what's to stop MS from doing the same? Maybe MS are deliberately doing this and planning a last minute switch, the same way Sony switched to 8GB DDR5 with the PS4? X1Slim is not 4K native gaming like the Scorpio. Any 4K slapped on the box is there to confuse the customers, just like 4K has been handled up until the current UHD standard was finalized rendering much of those 4K claims moot for how many people will want to use it. X1Slim is UHD/FDR compliant, which means it has the proper HDMI chip, and that, along with likely a 4K upscaler...which TV's do better in most cases, is probably the only difference to the hardware besides efficiency designs. FDR on games isn't really anything that isn't possible now, because FDR is rather moot for the GPU. USB interface may hinder it though, but from my understanding the X1 has USB2.0.

I don't know how much of a delay would be needed to upgrade the specs. Depends on where it is in the design/production process. It's unlikely they'd need to if they release this year, because they would just likely increase their lead over MS anyhow. PS4Slim could be incoming, and I wouldn't doubt it'll show up at the Sony presser tonight. Sony has a lot of interest in having a UHD/FDR compliant console out there right now, and it'd be better to get it out while the stand alones are still $400+. It's a tactic which has helped them sell a lot of consoles in the past...all three prior PlayStations in fact.

4K in general is a confusing spec, and not all 4K listed devices are actually FDR compliant....so anyone looking for 4K, gaming or media wise, I'd highly recommend going and doing some research. For instance My expensive receiver I brought 2 years ago I got because it supported 4K, but it will not work with FDR/UHD HDCP2.2 encoded media. Luckily, my recently purchased TV is FDR compliant, otherwise I'd be quite upset if I had paid full price for it.

Since you may be looking for a 4K TV

Any TV brought now, and actually made since 2015, is likely to be FDR compliant....but if it doesn't say FDR, pick another one. If you have it hooked up to a receiver for input switching, it's likely not going to work, because there are only a couple HDCP2.2 compliant receivers on the market right now.

You can't make triple AAA titles on a 2 year turnaround. You just can't. These games take about 3-5 years to make usually and we aren't even including planning there just the development. That model doesn't work when a new console releases every 2 or 3 years. Developers already run into this problem with 5-6 year console cycles. Now that is cut in half. Oh but wait those games they want me to make for Xbox one and Xbox Scorpio I can make that for PC as well? Ok I will just do that then.

In the next 5 years watch more than half the current console gamers go to PC. I say this as a Console fan and as a Sony fan. Microsoft just won this preemptively. Microsoft has the funds to make new hardware every few years for decades. So does Nintendo. Sony doesn't. There is no way to look at this that comes out good for Sony. :(

I don't think Sony will worry much. PS2 was the weakest. PS3 took 2 plus years for developers to overcome some frame rate issues and even in the end there was never a HUGE gap. PS4 and Xbox One fuel a technical debate really for 2 reasons of course - resolution and frame rate. Neither machine seemlessly did 1080p/60fps. Sony's did much closer, but many titles opted for 30fps and even a couple went 900p. XB1 was even more troubled to do this. These issues created major headaches for people.
Now with NEO and SCORPIO, 1080p/60fps should no longer be the slightest issue for either machine at their purported spec sheet. Scorpio's confirmed, NEO's all but confirmed. However, even as NEO's stands it shouldn't have trouble doing 1080p/60fps. I hear for VR they want minimum 90fps. So I'm betting Sony is thinking, fine someone has to be lower spec wise let Microsoft be the more powerful system, but we have a much richer exclusive library and our exclusives will truly be exclusives.
Just like now, America will likely continue to be MS's solid territory. Japan will still not buy the thing if they sold it for $99. Europe, I think, will continue to mostly shun Microsoft.
I love all game companies, though Im a Nintendo man at heart. However, in the battle of Microsoft and Sony, I kinda pull for the underdog Xbox. I don't want to see it leave the market. TV's nowadays, especially from Sony and Samsung, actually have excellent upscalers. It's actually required to up/downscale any image that isn't native to a LED/LCD type screen to show it full screen, because there are just that many pixels that have to be lit. Otherwise, you only get a portion of the picture, or the picture is really small on the TV.

It's almost redundant to build upscalers into the systems themselves....although sometimes they can do post render processes better like AA or something.

Can you upscale games to 4k on the XBO? As far as I know 4k video has been the only thing possible on consoles so far, and any up scaling on 4k gaming would be on the TV's part. Not sure what the ultimate difference in quality would be there, but I don't see 4k being possible across the board on the Scorpio natively. I'd assume if only certain titles could hit that mark, they wouldn't have advertised it in that way. Could definitely be wrong though.

Right i see it no different then what is happening right now. All the games are Xbox 1 and PC cross play. PC is pretty much the same game as the Xbox 1 but with greater graphics. Same for Scorpio it will just match the PC version on ultra high graphic settings. Only thing they have to watch out for is locking the frame rates the same across the platforms online so they all the same.

I think the main reason for the Xbox Scorpio and PS neo is to run games with equivalent settings to the base line models except in 4k and provide stable VR support. However, you could easily use the power advantage of the new hardware, to improve the graphics and potentially double the framerate by running the game at 1080p. A person on an XB1 vanilla/ slim could have a game running at 1080p 30fps, while the Scorpio user could play the same game at 1080p 60fps! This could cause issues with multiplayer only games. I stuck to consoles avoid worrying about Upgrades and user-base partitions, that seems to no longer be the case.

Sadly, Sony is going the same route. Useless upgrade unless your a graphics enthusiast as games will be what they are now, and harmful upgrade for OGX1 owners as no way the OGX1/PS4 is going to come anywhere close to having the proper optimization as devs endevour to "realize their vision". Dev's vision isn't only graphics, it's more immersive games, and legacy hardware is going to hold that back, or features are going to be left out to accommodate a devs vision.

People are basing their excitement on PR, and all that PR, and people's excitement is mostly just a pipe dream.

I was quite critical of this new paradigm, but realistically, I want to see how this new thing works out in the consumer market. In the meantime, I'll enjoy the job security, because my job is mostly writing tools to handle cross gen code porting and graphics scalability tasks.

Yes, PC has been doing it forever. What's improved? The graphics and frame rate. Actual tangible game design elements are built to the lowest common denominator.

That's what Fox is trying to say along with that it's possible that features could be stripped to accommodate the lower hardware, and those features could be stripped either from the legacy version, or the more robust version..,..exactly like it's done on the PC now in fact....exactly like ti's been done on PC forever. Features are stripped, or at least considered, based on the LCD.

On consoles though, those games are optimized as much as possible for the hardware....now a dev just has to make a game work somewhat...kind of like how cross gen ports work now. This is where this new paradigm takes console development. It's not something people should be excited for IMO.

You have to factor in 2 things, Usually when consoles are released the company incurs losses from selling the hardware (e.g Ps3, Xbox One with Kinect etc.) So building a similiar spec PC to the Scorpio wont neccesarily be cheaper. Secondly, the PC hardware isn't optimised to it's full use (bad ports always occur e.g Arkham Knight) While with consoles dev's squeeze all the power out of it as they can (i mean look at Uncharted 4 on the Ps4 lol).

I don't disagree with you one bit.....but when you consider Microsoft is selling the xbox one S 2tb version for 399 this fall, I think 599 is the very bottom of the range you will have for the Scorpio. As in, considering it's going to be 4k gaming capable, wouldn't you think the very smallest hard drive they would ship it with would probably be 1 tb? And for most, I think they would want at least 2tb (and probably need more if you're going to be dealing with a lot of 4k content). And if a system coming this fall, that is much less powerful with much less capabilities is selling for 400, 599 is probably pie in the sky....what if Scorpio is 699? 799? I wonder. A lot of parents are not going to buy their children a Xbox Scropio if it's very expensive. Xbox One will then jump to 199, while Xbox S will be a better model for $100 more, then their is Scropio, for the hardcore gamers. Yes, for someone like me and you, I have no desire for the S when Scropio is coming. no because in the long term strategy, Neo is comparable to the XB1 S. It's a mid-gen upgrade and successor to the PS4 when the PS5 launches 2018/19. It's not meant to be a next gen console like Scorpio. XB1 is a 1.31 TF console and Scorpio will be a 6TF one. That power disparity alone tells us this much. I know you're not confused by all this backwards compatibility nonsense. That was the whole point to both MS and Sony moving to x86 architecture this gen in the 1st place: price and future compatibility. I think both companies have basically the same philosophy, just MS was forced to reveal theirs a little sooner than expected. They'll both eventually phase out the XB1 and PS4 leaving the XB1 S and Neo as economy models. Obviously due to PSVR, Neo has to be a beefier upgrade and not just a simple re-skin with 4k movie playback. Down the road though, it could be a lot less of a hindrance than XB1 S will be to Scorpio in future IP development. But MS has an interesting ecosystem in place that can offer advantages to devs and publishers that Sony cannot. The next 4 years are going to be interesting for sure.

Xbox are moving forward as are PlayStation in trying to adapt to what people are noticing a huge difference in picture quality between HD and 4K. So they are making a more powerful consol to get the best gaming experience , people are playing the PlayStation and Xbox on 4K TVs and noticing the graphics are not as good as what they claim, that's because the machines were made in mind with HD as the norm, no one noticed the difference between HD , 720 , 900 and 1080 HD.

Here's the problem that Sony is going to have. They are pushing their own VR. MS isn't. Sony wants that VR money and the NEO money so how much power can they put in this thing without taking too much of a hit How much money is the PlayStation gamer willing to pay for the ultimate VR experience?. Scorpio is out 2017. VR for PC is out already. NEO is specially being made for psvr. If the psvr is what triggered NEO then it should come out soon into market. Let's just call this what it is. MS knows they've lost this generation and their only option is to "etch a sketch" it early and start over. However they have to frame it in such a way where it doesn't look like they're shouting "uncle." Well, they mentioned it and some of it's specs. Thinking about it, I really didn't care much for Microsoft's presentation. I'm a big fan of the Gears Of War and Dead Rising series, but neither of those games looked like too big of an upgrade to be the first "true" games of those series on this generation of consoles; especially this far into this generation. The play on Xbox One and/or Windows 10 thing was nice, which tells me Microsoft is serious about grabbing hold of you PC gamers - I don't think it's going to work out too great for Microsoft. You PC gamers are loyal to your preference. But what I mostly saw out of Microsoft was them saying "spend money... and a LOT of it." They want us to buy new controllers (that we can design the look of - a gimmick), they want us to upgrade our consoles, and then upgrade them again in the near future. Based on the early rumors, I was interested in getting the "Slim", but now I'm thinking hold off and see what "Scorpio" is all about. Then again, maybe I would be better off just switching to PC altogether? Some are speculating that since Sony isn't going to say anything about it's "Neo" system, that Microsoft has already won E3 - I think that's B.S. If anything, Microsoft just told Sony what it's plans are for Scorpio, giving Sony the opportunity to match it or do better.

It is a significantly more powerful system than the PS4 and games will be built around that and scaled down for PS4...The same thing has been done on pc's for years and no one complains. A non issue. They won't look awful at all. The Scorpio is a successor, but since it will also play the same games as X1 it is also an upgrade. I do not think the X1 will hold back the Scorpio at all. Right now the games on X1 are huge and very attractive...adding higher res and frame-rates along with insane lighting and particle effects will be what takes those same games to the next level. Some won't care all that much and the X1 will be the better option. Those that do want a bit more sparkle will now have the option to purchase it.

Xbox multi buy/multi play will allow one purchase for pc and Xbox so you can play co-op with a friend without split screen, from what I understand. The xbox is still relevant for that alone. I'm guessing in a few more years when the "next gen"comes out the games will be compatible with Scorpio in addition to the new flagship console. I'm guessing the same with Neo. The improved specs of Scorpio and Neo will probably play games adequately however the flagship systems will obviously provide higher resolutions and frames. I believe this will be the future of consoles, or possibly replaceable processors

It's not difficult to understand. Team xbox are offering options to best suit your budget. The slim is basically a smaller xb1 that can play 4k blu rays. It's cheap. The scorpio will be more expensive, and be aimed at seasoned gamers and the VR crowd. They both play the same quality games, and offer good experiences. I think some indecision arises from not knowing the pricepoint. Do you get the slim at a fantastic $299, or do you wait for Scorpio price announcement to figure out if you'd be better saving up the difference ?

I have the Xbox One. Xbox Original to 360 - 4 years. Sega Saturn to Dreamcast (in US) - 4 and a half years. This is not completely unheard of. But they aren't calling it the subsequent machine because they tell us, like Sony is expecting to, we get forward and backward compatibility. Enough of that!!

yes but the hardware has to be decided at a certain point in time. Sure a card that is just released today that is top of the line will do more. But remember that console GPU's are a lot more streamlined and optimized whereas your PC card is unoptimized..

I agree that just throwing out 6 TFLOPS doesn't mean much, but still.. if the Neo is reported to only have like 2x the GPU power of the PS4 then it looks like the Scorpio could have some serious muscle over it..

Don't expect people to understand the numbers that are actually important to the performance of a system. TFlops only indicates the overall amount of data that can be processed at one time, not the kind of data that can be processed at certain thresholds. TF in general, is really just a good way to get a general view of how it will perform, but speaks nothing on the efficiency of the system itself. That's why it's not really a marketed term in GPU sales, and can even be quite hard to research, because it's kind of a useless number when making performance comparisons.

That being said, it's likely going to be pretty decent if it can do what MS is claiming.

For Oculus Rift and HTC Vive to work "ok", you need over 90fps at 2160x1200 sustained. And that is in 2016, with Oculus 1.0.
Will 6TFLOPs be enough for 3840×2160 at 90fps with hiQ graphics? Maybe, Microsoft will modify specs like they did with Xbox One when it was going to be 10% raw clock slower. It is madness to say 6TFLOPS 18 months before launch. It is a non sense. It is nothing.

I think that I will still buy an Xbox One S mainly because of the 4K Streaming and 4K Blu Ray disk drive, since we will still have over a year and quarter to go, before Scorpio is released after the release of Xbox One S. It will go nicely with my 65" LG 4K led TV., The Xbox One S will still upscale games to 4K. Another thing to remember here is that a stand alone 4K Blu ray player will cost much more than the Xbox One S(which has a 4K Blu Ray Drive) and a stand alone 4K Blu Ray player doesn't allow me to play games like the Xbox One S will, so, it's still a great deal if you look at it that way. I have been waiting for a 4K player to add to my home theatre set up so I can watch 4K Blu ray movies and stream 4K from Netflix etc, so this will fit in nicely until the Scorpio comes out, then the Xbox One S will go into a bedroom and the Scorpio into the lounge.

For example, if i made a game with thousands of zombies in a open world that is taking advantage of scorpio´s power. How can that game run on the original xbox one?? If Sony is releasing soon, then they will already have their specs set for the most part. They could maybe increase the specs some, but going from 4TF to 6TF would require a bit more than just a clock boost, but likely an entirely new chip, which requires design time.

I doubt Sony would make a major overhaul to the system if they have confirmed it's existence. If they never confirmed anything though it's possible they could adjust. Whether they can or not depends on what their plans are for the system.

Kind of silly for people to claim Sony is adjusting one unknown spec for another when neither spec is known for sure to begin with. Then of course, Sony has to consider just what kind of impact the Scorpio will have on PS4 sales...which may not be that much given that Scorpio is at least 1-1/2 years out.
