I Don’t Regret My Wii U Purchase… At All

“If Nintendo releases the NX so soon after the Wii U I will lose complete trust in them! I feel cheated that they moved on so quick; we did not get a full console cycle!”

I have heard the above cry repeated on message boards across the internet. For some reason, because the Wii U’s lifespan will be shorter than that of other Nintendo consoles, and the fact that it has had less first-party titles in total, the console is not worth owning entirely?

How entitled can you be?

Same I love mine. Even though everyone has been slagging it off like never before, to me it still seems brilliant!

The Wii U had backward compatibility with Wii software and hardware, and it offered free online play (which people seem to take for granted nowadays). The console also had games, but it did miss out on the sports genre which wouldn't favor any gaming platform.

Nintendo is creating the NX so that they aren't reliant on 3rd parties. I want the NX to have great support, but at least I know that Nintendo will be able to amply support the NX if 3rd parties aren't there.

'''For some reason, because the Wii U’s lifespan will be shorter than that of other Nintendo consoles, and the fact that it has had less first-party titles in total, the console is not worth owning entirely?''

no. its literally not worth owning. who would pay a whopping £250 for a console with last generation innards? its not worth £250 its as simple as that. its worth £150 tops, but nintendo slapped another £100 on top just to exploit fans. a nintendo fan tax, if you like.

people with sense know this.

and a console with a library of so few games worth owning, is worth even less. £80 is a good price considering what you get.

rjason122906d ago

@pcz who the fuck cares about specs, that's all anyone can talk about, if you care that much about specs, get a damn pc, Xbone and ps4 have been outdated for a while now.

ShaunCameron2906d ago

@ rjason.

Thank you! LOL @ Sony and Microsoft fanboys talking about specs yet are too broke and lame to get a gaming PC.

TXIDarkAvenger2906d ago (Edited 2906d ago )

"The console also had games, but it did miss out on the sports genre which wouldn't favor any gaming platform. "

And missed out on pretty much every big 3rd party game...

XisThatKid2906d ago

Of course, most Nintendo fans are ok with whatever the big N throws out without question. Over all I can imagine some people are in the boat that they haven't had a "real system" in over 10 years. I know allot of you feel different but people DO feel this way and feel like Nintendo owes them a bit for not giving them a grade A console. Plus they've been kinda stockholding key franchises that people been asking for for years and they get Ocarina of time remade again. I'm just saying at this point some believe they've suck it out for long time and want more of what they want and not what Ninty thinks they want. I'm not one of those people but I agree with them
Sorry had to repost I replied to spam by accident

Michiel19892906d ago

@pcz there is no game on any console I enjoy more than smash bros on Wii U. Just because you are a specs whore doesn't mean everyone else is. together with Bayonetta 2 and Mario kart 8 my purchase is more than justified.
Also a thing is that when Nintendo 1st party games release, you know 100% sure that it's polished and runs smooth without hickups. Can't say that about my ps4, Witcher 3 was just unplayable because of the fps lag and the unearthly slow inventory. and so far the only games I enjoyed on ps4 were Bloodborne, Disgaea 5 and Don't starve. and by the time spent on each console so far I really value my Wii U more than my Ps4 so far.

_-EDMIX-_2906d ago

Buddy if third party developers are not there for their next platform they don't need to worry about supporting it long they need to start worrying about closing up shop and turning into a third-party publisher themselves.

I'm not even sure how anyone could even think their next platform would do well coming off the wake of wii u that's just kind of insane.

If they don't develop an architecture that's easy for developers to use they could expect the exact same results they got for the last two generations in regards to support.

Nintendo only supporting Wii-U resulted in 12 million sales I'm not sure why them making a little more games would result in five times the amount of sales especially if you consider their best-selling IP's still actually released on the Wii U...

Also backwards compatibility is a bit irrelevant people are purchasing the Wii U to play the Wii U's games not last generation's games that's why even upgrade if that's even a bullet point to owning the platform?

wonderfulmonkeyman2906d ago (Edited 2906d ago )

@ Ed
"Buddy if third party developers are not there for their next platform they don't need to worry about supporting it long they need to start worrying about closing up shop and turning into a third-party publisher themselves. "

Buddy, until you can prove that non-Nintendo gamers will flock to the NX for multiplats, you've got no evidence to suggest that third party multiplats alone can carry the NX to success during its first year.
This isn't Sony and Microsoft; the same multiplats that make their sell systems aren't going to magically work for the launch of the NX just because you say it will based off of their success on platforms you care about.

You need to say something to prove that people will go to NX for multiplats, instead of just claiming that they're the end-all solution to the NX's sales chances, with no logical evidence that multiplats will pull in non-Nintendo gamers to the NX OVER the PS4 or XBone.

Here's the truth: Nintendo NEEDS to make sure that they cover their own butts with THEIR OWN GAMES FIRST, before third party multiplats will matter.
The Wii U's first year PROVES that.
No one's gonna get an NX for multiplats during launch after how that turned out for the Wii U; it's going to be the exclusives, be they first or third party, that will launch the system into early success and grant multiplats a chance later.
AFTER they've gotten that success, THEN they can expect sales from multiplats, because they'll be a spice to the main course, and there will be an install base big enough for them to actually have a chance at making multiplats profitable.
But Nintendo has to form that install base FIRST, before multiplats can do diddly squat for them.

pcz2906d ago (Edited 2906d ago )

@rjason12

are you not listening? im talking about worth, not specs. the fact the wiiu has last gen specs, means it is worth less. it shouldnt cost the same as a current gen console, when it has last gen specs. its not an argument about which is more powerful, its an argument about worth. it simply isnt worth the asking price.

they have inflated the price of the wiiu to current gen prices, when they are making massive savings by using obsolete technology. they arent passing the savings onto the consumer, instead, exploiting consumer loyalty in the brand and charging an extortionate price that it literally is not worth.

see?

pcz2906d ago

@Michiel1989

you arent listening either.

what gives a console its value, literally, its monetary, retail value? the manufacturer has to try to get back the money it spends on components, chips etc the physical make up of the console. a wiiu is obsolete technology. it has tech from last generation, practically no hard drive memory etc. so why does it cost £250 please answer me.

the ps4 and x1 cost the same amount, but wait, you get technology inside approaching something that is more modern, the processors are faster, more powerful, the hard drives have a lot more memory. the components are literally WORTH more. its not about specs, im talking about worth. you get more BANG for your buck.

so it would seem nintendo have grossly inflated the price of the wiiu to match the consoles of their current gen competitors, even though the PHYSICAL MAKE UP of the wiiu, isnt WORTH the current gen asking price.

please, if you have a sensible, logical and truth answer to this, i would be interested in your response. saying i am a fanboy, or 'spec whore' is a cheap cop-out. im clearly not arguing about the importance of specs, im talking about THEIR COST.

understand?

Michiel19892905d ago

@pcz
You say it's not worth owning because it has lower power than ps4/xb1, so u base a purchase purely over the system specs, you havent listed anything else why it shouldn't be worth owning.
A Wii U doesn't cost 250 pounds either, I bought the mk8 bundle for 230 euro(~160 pounds?) and I got Windwaker HD for free with it, now I consider that a way better purchase than 400 euros for a ps4.

If you think that only specs make the value of a console ur wrong. Imagine they bring out a ps5 for 600 bucks and the specs are better than any pc in the world, but they only make shitty 8 bit games on it, would u think the console is worth owning? right, me neither.
Value is not only determined by raw power, u buy a damn console to play games so they make up most of the value. If Wii U had no good games at all I'd agree with you, but you are dead wrong.

Same I love my Wii U It has some great games I love Mario Maker so addicted to that one. The Only console I regret buying is my Xbone mainly because my Son said I would regret it and he was right I hate it when he is right.

EddieNX 2906d ago

I also have WiiU Xbone combo. There's a lot of things I like about the xbone but also a lot of downsides.

C_Ali882906d ago (Edited 2906d ago )

Xone is the only console I avoided this gen. (in order of purchase) Had a Wii, 360 and ps3 last gen. Ps2, GC, Xbox in gen 6. Ps1, N64 and dreamcast previously. Prior to that Nes, SNES, Master system, Genesis, (no Saturn, 32x, or CD though). So my allegiance has always been to a multi console approach and quite honestly I loved them all for what they offered (The original Wii I abandoned midway). but this gen I decided to forego Microsoft early with the DRM and Kinect debacle.

hardcorehenry2906d ago

WiiU seems really solid built to me. Which means my VC collection will last for all eternity. I'm cool with that.

superchiller2906d ago

"Which means my VC collection will last for all eternity. I'm cool with that."

Until your Wii U console breaks, is lost, or stolen. If that happens, you lose all your digital purchases, because Nintendo ties your purchases to hardware, not accounts.

C_Ali882906d ago (Edited 2906d ago )

like a gameboy surviving a grenade lol..... @superchiller I don't believe that is true anymore but I could be mistaken.

hardcorehenry2906d ago (Edited 2906d ago )

lol yeah exactly... forgot bout that. or my NES somehow surviving me jumping on it.

I mean, I was less than 100 pounds, but still... not too shabby.

I don't regret te purchase, but I wouldn't miss it either if I didn't have one.

It's sad how Nintendo has fallen. There are moments in which they got the attention for a while (MK8 and Sm4sh), but then mostly they just fall flat into irrelevance with Sony and MS as competition.

Back in my days, I would hold Sony and Nintendo equal in terms of games and entertainment, but ever since the Wii Nintendo has completely lost me

dotwithshoes2906d ago

Don't forget Splatoon. Ever since the Wii? The Wii gave Nintendo the most attention it has had since the SNES, and gave gamers plenty of really high quality games to play.I had more fun with my Wii than I ever did with my ps3.

Aloy-Boyfriend2906d ago

I don't see the quality games honestly other than the same handful Nintendo IPs. I loved Brawl, Mario Galaxy, Zelda TP, etc. Everything else was shovelware motion games.

With their gimmicks and family approach is how they lost me, and their slow game releases. And they are still at it with Wii U....

Interesting you had more fun with the wii than PS3. PS3 not only had true 3rd party support but also more quality exclusives. I liked the PS3 more by a mile because it was s true gaming powehouse.

_-EDMIX-_2906d ago

I fully agree. They had to so many games that I held in high regard now because of them Outsourcing their games to anyone and everyone I question them their best IP's for example the new Mario RPG I worried considering it's not being done by the main team that normally does the Paper Mario games.

I'm not entirely sure what's going on at that company but they need to start building more games in house and focusing on quality and not gimmicks Star Fox Zero is not something I ever want to see repeated by this company they basically butchered it and sent it out to Die to desperately sell a gimmick.

This company is basically gun-shy at releasing and supporting new ideas we've basically been seeing them run the same Mario Party 3D Mario Zelda Smash Brothers Mario Kart combo to death for Generations in fear of starting anything new I mean damn even Microsoft bought Gears of War!

And before any of you guys bring up titles like Splatoon or Pikmin question this, have any of those games got the equal number of releases that is Smash Brothers Mario Kart or 3D Mario or Zelda have gotten? Mind you did Pikmin not skip an entire generation? Did Luigi's Mansion not only skipped 2 console Generations but platforms? Yet the generation prior to last naughty dog was making Jak and Daxter games last generation they're making Uncharted and now the last of us is there new IP along with another new IP that they currently have in development. For god sakes let these teams Start A New Concept that gets supported every generation as opposed to desperately milking the death of these games.

That isn't to say you don't see God of War or Gran Turismo from Sony that isn't to say you don't see Halo or Forza from Microsoft but that is to say at least both those damn publishers still actively release new series every generation yet Nintendo is out here gun shy to even support anything brand-new longer than one generation. Yet we got dozens of Mario games give me a break they're scared!

This is the same gun-shy company that was scared to support Little Big Planet and it went on to do Millions upon millions of units elsewhere. Yet they wonder why they're even less relevant today than other companies.

Zeldafan642906d ago (Edited 2906d ago )

New ip doesn't automatically mean new gameplay. I'm not saying it's necessarily bad to use largely the same gameplay mechanics, everyone does for the most part, but don't pretend that these new ips are somehow revolutionary when they're not. The Wii U gamepad is great for NEW GAMEPLAY MECHANICS! Watch Dogs could have been something really spectacular if Ubisoft had taken the time to use the gamepad to its full potential. Rayman Legends and The Wonderful 101 are perfect examples of adding fresh new gameplay when actually putting forth the effort.

_-EDMIX-_2905d ago

"Zeldafan64"

Um....sure bud. lol

Cy2906d ago

It's an underpowered console based around a gimmick controller that doesn't have nearly the selection and quality of games that people have come to expect from Nintendo. It's not "entitled" to be upset that a company doesn't learn anything from the complaints people had about their last console. Nintendo dropped the ball two generations (or one, since I can't really call the Wii U a current gen console) in a row now. Only blind Nintendo fanboys would think there's no reason to be annoyed at the company's decisions.

KesMonkey2906d ago (Edited 2906d ago )

" can't really call the Wii U a current gen console"

It doesn't matter how you personally feel about it, the Wii-U is a generation 8 console, as is XB1 and PS4. Generation 8 is the current gen, therefore Wii-U is a current gen console. What generation a console belongs to has absolutely nothing to do with its technical specifications.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wi...

wonderfulmonkeyman2906d ago (Edited 2906d ago )

Yeah, no.
Everything you've said is personal opinion.

And in mine:
The QUALITY of Nintendo's games has been great for 90% of their releases this gen, which is better than I can say for most other developers.
The QUANTITY of games on the system has been just fine; indies and third party exclusives have more than done their job in delivering worthwhile high quality games that have covered for the absence of the CoD's and other chav fodder multiplats.

It's POWER is basically a non-factor to me; there have been plenty of systems on the market that weren't the most powerful of their gen, that have given me fantastic gaming experiences.
The Wii U easily joins those ranks of underpowered-but-excellent systems.

Your definition of its GENERATION is the epitome of console war soldier logic; it's an 8th gen system because GENS ARE DEFINED BY SEQUENCE, NOT SPECS.
Learn logic.

And finally, as for it's gimmick...
Aside from size and shape, how is it in any way inferior to a traditional controller?
Just like a traditional pad, it's got
4 face buttons
Start and select
Two clickable sticks
A D-pad
Four shoulder buttons.

And most of its games don't even make super-heavy use of the screen on it.
Traditionalists are literally lying through their teeth by calling this controller inferior.
In form, that's debatable, because everyone has different comfort zones when holding things.
But in function, it's capable of anything a traditional controller demands of games.

So, no. I don't regret it at all.
Just like I haven't regretted my NES, SNES, Genesis, PS2, N64, Dreamcast, Gamecube, PS3, Wii or Wii U.

Only blind console war soldiers would be so entitled as to say that the Wii U had nothing worth owning it for.

LOL_WUT2906d ago

Power may not mean anything to those who like motion controls or those who are into tablet like controllers (casuals), but it sure means a lot to 3rd party developers. I mean isn't clear that people just don't like gimmicks? ;)

_-EDMIX-_2906d ago

That's nice but say that to the developers that decided to pass on the platform because it was too weak for them to fulfill their Concepts that they inevitably went on to create on PlayStation 4, PC and Xbox One.

If you release a platform that is extremely weak prepare to have it not get supported consider that is like asking for developers to continue to support PlayStation 3 in 360 at some point you have to realize it's not worth their money to keep scaling their games back because a company created a weak platform that really isn't their problem.

If their platform doesn't have enough disk space or Ram guess it's just going to be left out that's how third party sees this.

Why should I sacrifice a revolutionary open world game because the Wii U has a garbage architecture? Why should they make a separate version for a weaker platform? If we're going to suggest this once again we might as well suggest they keep making PlayStation 3 and 360 games the argument still applies.

you might have released around the same time frame but its platform is very much dated just because someone releases a platform after the PlayStation 5 and it's really low-level Tech similar to a PlayStation 3 doesn't mean that third parties are going to be scaling all their games back to release on that company's garbage platform that isn't their problem that the company was stupid enough to make it terrible system that's irrelevant to them.

Nintendo makes a weak or difficult architecture again guarantee the same results as the Wii U if not worse.

I guess you may not personally care, which it looks like this company could release a garbage can with I spray paint an N on it and you would still buy it but looking at the bigger picture the platform won't get supported if it's not powerful enough for third-party to see it as a viable source to Bringing games over to they shouldn't have to worry about bending over backwards for a weaker and lesser install base.

wonderfulmonkeyman2906d ago

Ditto.
And to be honest, it isn't even that much shorter; it'll be leaving us after 4 years on the market, same as the Gamecube.

RosweeSon2906d ago (Edited 2906d ago )

Yeah this isn't new for Nintendo the fact there hardware isn't always top end tech means they are going to need to upgrade every 4-6 years they are not in this 10 year console cycle game.

C_Ali882906d ago

I'll still own one for all the Wii U games that I will continue to enjoy... So leave us?? lol Nah it just will become exclusive to those who purchased one.

LOL_WUT2906d ago

4 years is still 4 years regardless of how you want to spin that. No company in their right mind will look at this and think it was a success. ;)

Aquietguy2906d ago (Edited 2906d ago )

Did they make a profit?. They, as well as Sony and Microsft, are in business to make money. The only way they can be a failure is to not make a profit. Nintendo made a profit with the Wii U. That's all that matters. I had mine day 1 and no regrets here.

Dunban672906d ago

Aquietguy- the Wii U did not make a profit- so if that is how you judge success or failure then the wiiu was a failure by your definition as well as others-
You won t find any Nintendo exec, pr person, IR person, annual reports etc that says wii u made a profit- but Iwata did say The wii u cost more to make than they could sell it for

Aquietguy2906d ago

Dunban67- I saw reports saying at launch that a Wii U was profitable after the purchase of one game. The only way they didn't make a profit is for people to buy a console with no first party games.

That's always the definition of success. Again, please point out one for profit company that's not in it to make money.

Mega_Volnutt2906d ago

The Gamecube was on the market 5 full years you delusional Nintendo fanboy.

_-EDMIX-_2906d ago

Microsoft’s Surface and Xbox hardware revenues take a big hit in Q3

Microsoft just posted the third quarter of its 2024 fiscal financial results. The software maker made $61.9 billion in revenue and a net income of $21.9 billion during Q3. Revenue is up 17 percent, and net income has increased by 20 percent.

Xbox content + services up 62% while hardware down 31%... seems about right with the way they tout you don't need the hardware to play. People can play on their phones or smart tv or other means. I don't hardly play on my consoles directly since getting devices like the logitech g-cloud and ps portal. Which is to also say I have been playing more digital than physical because of these devices.

solideagle2h ago

you should apply in MS PR team buddy, I think you will do a great job in my humble opinion :)

Cacabunga1h ago

I can tell people like you are an absolute minority..

If service is up means their fans and fanboys accepted this model and subscribed to it. The near future you will see a big decline because the service is saturated.

shinoff21831h ago

But that's been ms for years. When things aren't going their way they try to change the way things are said. For instance console sales are down, they stop telling how many sold instead telling us how many hours spent in halo or headshots. So it makes sense console sales down just say people are playing on more devices then previous. What they won't say is how many xbox players jumped ship to ps5.

"Despite some early successes for Xbox games on rival platforms, Xbox hardware is down by a massive 31 percent this quarter."
"Without Activision Blizzard, Microsoft’s overall gaming revenue would have actually declined this quarter."
"Xbox content and services would have only been up a single percent without Activision Blizzard..."
"It looks like next quarter is going to be a similar story for gaming at Microsoft, too."

That is crazy... so A/B/K is carrying the whole Xbox gaming.

Sony Patents To Prevent You From In-Game Harassment By Reading Your Emotions

A new patent recently published by Sony wants to gather biometric data of gamers to track whether one is being harassed using AI tools.

Profchaos1d 4h ago (Edited 1d 4h ago )

I hope this is one of those patents that never comes to fruition.

I already dislike the fact you can pay a significant amount for a online service buy associated games and content on said service and get banned from that service over potentially a misunderstanding the bans are already handed out for flimsy reasons

I'd rather see money invested in a ban that simply removes the offensive players ability to communicate with unknown players allow them to continue party chats with friends but not with Joe blow on cod.
