8-Bit Mega Man: Good or Bad Idea?

In a bizarre move, Capcom is going to be publishing Mega Man 9 in 8-bits this September. Is it a problem, or is it genius shrouded in mystery? Are they out to prove something to someone? Who knows. But this feature explores the bold move, and discusses what good could come out of creating an 8-bit game in a time when high fidelity graphics are seemingly the "right" way of making a game. I don't really care about the 8-Bit style, I think it's pretty cool, but the MegaMan 7&Bass/8 look would have done it for me as well.
What I really dislike is that they took out sliding and charging...

they should have just gave it a graphical upgrade like the did with the new Bionic Commando <XBLA game>. I am still a fan, but hopefully its not to overly difficult.

Neither. It's an awesome idea. Leave it to Capcom to go against the grain and create something new (in this day and age) w/ some major oldschool flair.

I dont want to see garbage on my HUGE TV. I grew up with the Coleco Vision, We've MOVED PAST THAT. I Enjoy 2D but atleast do High-Res 2D art. This game will not see my coin. (The Megaman X Collection (ps2) ) is far better then this.

I think im the only one when i say this, but the moment i have my new big LCD TV i cant wait to play all those pixalated games.
To me pixelated games have something awesome, just something awesome XD cant explain it.

I'm sorry, but I have to agree with liquified. When I bought my HDTV last year, I wasn't sitting there telling myself: Wow, I can't wait to play Super Mario 2 all over again. I mean, everyone can have their own opinion, but I think it's a cop out to be honest. It's so easy to make 8-bit games compared to what can be done today, and I think it was just a way to make money without spending any.

Do something else. Do something innovative. Going back to 8-bit isn't it though. Not that I would have personally bought a Mega Man anyway, but even if I did, this wouldn't be seeing my dollar. I'd like to consider myself a progressive gamer. Point and chastise me if you wish, but I like to play today's games. I played yesterday's games. And they were fun. But they're still yesterday's games, and I have no desire to relive yesterday. Out with the old, in with the new.

its understandable you want something back when you buy a HD tv but ruling these things out is pointless.

This game is going to feel like if they had this back then for the Nes with leaderboards and such XD.

I love it, the simplified visuals have a strong charm.

True they are remaking Bionic Commando but they are updating the graphics so not quite the same. Still going to be great once out.

Why when Megaman X looks so superior would we move back to the nes days. Doesn't make any sense. I may not be one of the few who would of wanted HD megaman game, when I see games like SF2 HD and others that look amazing.

I'd think the reason to go back would be pretty obvious, to tie up loose story ends between the original and X arc.

I am personally looking forward to it. Mega Man has been pretty much garbage since they abandonded the original series, so yea, I can't wait to visit the original Mega Man again.

I went through pretty much the same process as the author in regards to going from "what the hell, why?" to "actually this could be pretty awesome." I think it's fan service done right, and few series can pull it off and be praised for "returning to the roots" like Mega Man can. Plus, as the article said, this visual look matches the gameplay of the Mega Man series.
